I'm German and lived in the UK for 6 years and I was really surprised at the small selection of different teas. Don't get me work Brits, you are the best when it comes to black tea but every other flavour you are sadly lacking.
Gluehfix, Hanuta, Ebbelwoi, Haendlmaier suesser Senf (sweet mustard), Duesseldorfer Loewensenf (hot mustard), Jacobs Kroenung (coffee), NIvea shaving cream in the tube (3 times more expensive in the US), and what I miss sooo much but is impossible to bring: Fischbroetchen.
Brät (raw pork meat) to be spread on yummy Laugen Brötchen (bread rolls), Weißer Riese (I know this is sad, but this is washing powder - it smells devine), Currywurst (much better when eating from a fast food stand). OMG my mouth is watering
@@sabinelandau2330 ,Agree about the currywurst, our local Lidl sometimes have it in - 2 or 3 times a year - and I always stock up. Might be ready made but it's delicious. Just wish we could get it all year round.
@@brittariedel3446 Ooch, Do not be so cruel to Karin Sommer alias Xenia Katzenstein. Und nee, nee. Die Kroening ist und bleibt mein Lieblingskaffee. In meiner Familie gab es jahrelang Tchibo, an der Uni musste ich Dallmayr Prodomo "geniessen". Final thought: Who ever complains about German coffee should come to the US and try any of the brews around here. Way too coarse right out of the can (yep, can), Folgers, Maxwell House, Chock full o'Nuts, all horrible footwash; the only drinkable brand being Melitta and guess where it comes from...
[06:18] - 12 eggs for 10$ is way above _Demeter_ quality (highest bio dynamic standard) in Germany. I buy direct from a farmer for 40cent per egg and that is already a hightened price.
Okay I get that it might be weird to not use an applicator with the tampon when you grew up using it but as someone that never used an applicator it just angers me that it's so much single use plastic :o tampons and pads are unfortunately already so bad on the environment but adding THAT much plastic to every single tampon is insane to me🙈
You can buy tampons with applicators here in Ireland but they are made from cardboard which is recyclable. I can't imagine using plastic ones, makes me wonder what's in the tampons themselves then.
Actually, pea soup is highly nutritious. Wherever you go into the Alps on a "Alm" cottage, be it for skiing, hiking or biking, you can get pea soup with Würstel (sausage) and 2 slices of black bread. After that meal you are ready to hit the mountain slopes again.😉
@@sabineschroter1012 Maggi soups are very nutritious. But not healthy, because of "empty calories". Most of Maggi soups is just starch, a bit of vacuum-frozen veggies, salt and articial flavor. Makes you fat, but not healthy. But good for a day of sports on the ski slopes.
Imodium 😅, Oropax😅, ,Erbsensuppe 😅, Popcorn - Birkenstock. So funny and interesting. I always miss Sauerkirschen im Glas. something which is also typical German. About tampons: Many young women are using menstruations cups - my daughters included. I must say that I envy the young generation for them. They are environment-friendly, reliable, handy and cheap. I would have liked to use them. Do you have them in the USA? It is interesting that you are importing German tampons into the USA - and tea. Did you know that Ostfriesland in Northern Germany is the largest consumer of black tea in the world? People there are drinking more tea than Indians, Chinese, English or Irish people. Thank you for your video. Always interesting to see Germany through your eyes.
The pea soup is a nice basis for experiments in the kitchen. I like to spice it with summer savory and nutmeg. You can also try it with garlic, ginger or fresh parsley. Also you can grate a fresh carrot and/or celery into it before or when it starts boiling. I like to cook it with sausages - usually Wienerle, Bockwurst, Göttinger or Krakauer - or with small pieces of smoked bacon.
The tampon thing is so weird. Just goes to show how company decisions and standards in production can determine what we think of as normal and abnormal. 😄 Interesting!
@@jutjub3297 We have those applicators in Germany, too, but theyre reusable. But you can find them, if you think inserting the tampon with your finger is disgusting or something :)
Ohropax are THE BEST(!) tried and tested on many fligths to the US and I used seba med as a teenager but have later found Dr. Hauschka 🧡🧡🧡 and there is no turning back for me. LOVE the colour of your Birkenstocks!
One of the Bahlsen factory outlets in and around Hanover would surely be your dreamland: Tons of Kipferl, Pick up cookies and NicNacs as cheap as it gets! :-) As Lorenz also is a Bahlsen brand, they have both there. Bahlsen should hire you as the most nice and attractive employee they ever had!
No Nic Nacs in the United States?!?😲 Hailey, when you come back to Germany you have to search for a 'Bahlsen Fabrikverkauf' for your Vanille Kipferl and Pick up in your neighborhood! We have one and you can buy Pick up 'Bruch' (broken 'Riegel', but still tastes as good as the perfect ones!) in a whole 1Liter container box!🤭😂 Enjoy your tea & cookies! Ps: the US tampon shocked me to be honest😳 can't fathom to use those,bc to me the 'o.b. mini' or 'Super' ones here in Germany already seemed huge, but this... omg 😱 Have a good time!
The US tampons have an applicator - mainly plastic .. they think it is more hygienic when you do not have to insert the tampon by hand. I don't know about the US-ladies - but I am quite prone to wipe my fingers from blood stains in the booth and then go to the sink and wash my hands thoroughly afterwards. So this whole applicator thing passed me by (not bleeding anymore, as I am too old). But to each their own.
But as North German (Hannover) in Austrian exile I have to add that Bahlsen is German as German can be, while Vanillekipferl are Austrian, maybe Bavarian too. :-))
@@olafkunert3714 greetings from nearby Munich in Bavaria, yes Vanillekipferl are very common for Christmas here. I personally don't like them, but everyone else here does. 😉
@@HayleyAlexis I totally get that! This is Art Deco weekend in Miami Beach, and since it's mainly an outdoor event, I am looking forward to wearing long pants and a windbreaker! Enjoy the refreshing air.
Just do´nt tell anyone from Great Britain or Friesland that you call this stuff tea ;) But I have to admit that I really missed fennel, pepermint and nettel "teas" when I lived abroad..
Loved this video. I have 2 products I loved in Germany that I brought back to the US. One is the powder aspirin. We do have powder Tylenol here but to bothers my throat. The Germany product is Superior in my opinion. Two is Eucerin bar soap the German version smells amazing. The US Eucerin soap does not have the same scent. Lastly I agree about the German tea it’s wonderful. Have fun visiting Florida ❤
I grew up with Erbsen suppe as a kid when I visited family in Germany but we never had it out of a packet! My Grandmother made it on the range with bits of schinken in it - YUM! We would sometimes put some Maggi on it to add a bit of savoury
There used to be something called "Erbswurst" which was basically pea powder pressed into a sausage shape. You added water and got a pea soup with sort of a smoky flavor. Haven't seen that for quite some time now.
Ohh i had the same problem once. Couldn't eat soldid food. My grandma used to make egg string soup in this case. She just heated broth (doesn't matter wich one) and scrambled two raw eggs (per plate) with some salt and pepper and then add it into the hot broth under stiring. The strings wasn't even a mm thick so basicaly not solid food but about 12-14 g of protein per serving. Always helped my condition very quick and i still prepare it for myself 😊 Ok i use instant veg broth now because i'm lazy when i'm sick 😅 maybe some chives on top
so laughing when you talking about Birkenstock. Here in France Germans are often called Birkenstock. Also my Exwife said this... until she found that Birkenstock do not have only the white shoes. Then she loved it... It is crazy to see the different between countries about food or for example tampons. Same here in France, you do not find soups, as in Germany. But may other things, like food in cans in the variation you find in Germany... But also the variation of cheese, as in France, you do not find in Germany. So very often, I have to fill up my car with stuff family and frinds asking for, when I drive in both directions...
When I fly home from a European vacation, I stuff my suitcase (or two when I'm lucky enough to get a premium, business or first class upgrade) with Mozartkugeln, Manner wafers & Julius Meinl coffee. 2.5 months till a make use of my passports!
Definitely a funny collection of things you brought over from Germany! :D One thing I'd bring the other way if I ever got to the US again (first and only time I went there was in 1993 when we spent our summer vacation in FL) would be Wintergreen TicTacs! Fell in love with those as that 10 year old kid and later on bought some more from an importer, still trying to never run out of them... Once offered one to my friend and her first reaction was "Die Dinger schmecken wie ein Klostein!!!" XD As for the tampons, it's still kinda unbelievable how expensive they are in the US! I remember watching a documentary here on YT about homeless women in NYC and their struggles during that time of the month when they have to choose whether to spend the little money they scrounged up on hygiene products or food, be it tampons or pads. I was like WTF, how on earth can these products be so pricy over there in the US?! o.O
It might be worth looking in a Polish store- the one in my small UK town has a huge variety of fruit and herbal teas, and a lot of Maggi and Knorr packet soups..
Dear Hayley ! You told me when you have a sore throat that you drink a lot of tea , which is really good. But freshly cooked chicken soup also helps with colds and sore throats . The important thing is you take a soup chicken and fresh soup vegetables and cook them in broth. It really helps.I wish you a lot of fun in your old home.😍
Hallo Hayley, and again a very nice video. You made my day again. But the Imodium is for after the Erbsensuppe ;-) . This soup is very common and famous in The Netherlands too.. "erwtensoep" or "snert" it is called. Even the weather has a name of this soup. When it is cold and rainy winter weather we say, this is "snertweer" with the meaning the weather is so bad the only way to feel well again is by eating "snert".
Erbsensuppe is very popular in Germany because it was widely cooked in the Imperial German army, it worked well with the field kitchens. You get even today dried versions in wurst shape. Check "Erbswurst", cheaper than the Maggi stuff.
My favorite tea flavour is honey by Pickwick. Unfortunately you cannot buy it in german groceries and supermarkets. So I always have to bring it from the netherlands, when I visit my brother.
Pea soup 😁🤣 Jeez, you definitly got germanized. Up until the people born in the 1970s, hardly any Germans went on vacation without their "Knorr Erbswurst". The Erbswurst is the same as the packet soup, only pressed into a large round tablet rolled in aluminum. Multiple servings in a large sausage-style wrapper. You could cook the Erbswurst on a camping stove if you were tired of pizza and paella on holiday. Unfortunately, the production of Erbswurst was discontinued. On Ebay, they offer the last Erbswürste in three-digit range. This stuff has a shelf life until Armageddon.
I own 2 pairs of Birkenstocks now. One pair I bought at Marshall's, the other on the Birkenstock website. I have also found them at Nordstrom Rack, outdoor retailers and others. You can totally buy them here. Often they are deeply discounted, if you are not deadset on a particular color.
I bought Birkenstocks sandals in Tennessee at a discount shoe store. They were $10 each and yes they are real. Tennesseeans didn't go for the Birkenstocks sandals. They say they are ugly. I have to agree with them, but they are comfortable house shoes.
This stuff is probably almost the same, just the powdered version, maybe some spices added for more flavour. Erbswurst was something that dates back to WWII. Easy to use, nutritious, will last for years and does not spoil.
This is great. Some things I bring back from Switzerland and Germany (some things are cheaper in Germany than Switzerland and my MIL lives 5 minutes from the German boarder) is Weleda Hustenelixier, chocolate from Switzerland, Kirsch Stengli, Swiss wine, Swiss beer (Feldschlosschen and Ueli Bier), Kirsch for Fondue, Wieso Weshalb Warum books (my kids speak Swiss German and go to German school in the US), Nusstorte, cheese for the Fondue, and some tonie's for the toniebox. I swear we aren't alcoholics 🤣🤣🤣. My brother and husband likes the beer and my mom and I like the wine. Also Kirsch is sweeter in the US. Kirsch Wasser (this is what we call it) is difficult to find and it's super expensive when we do find it. One-time we needed Kirsch for Fondue and the salesman said he didn't have it, but he has cherry vodka. I said it wasn't the same. One is a schnapps and the other is vodka. One is 90 proof and the other is 70 proof.
The variety of instant soups ("Packerlsuppen") is amazing. I always have some at home in case I get sick and can't get fresh groceries. It's the highlight of every paid sick leave. You want to check the ingredient list however. Some manufacturers (like Maggi) add MSG, preservatives and other agents, while others strictly abstain from such practices. Some people are sensitive to such ingredients.
The addition of MSG is a very sensitive topic on a global basis. From my own experience, as long as MSG is not part of the list of ingredients, it is not added as such. However, MSG is a naturally occurring chemical compound as part of the seasoning (hydrolizate) (see Maggi or Knorr seasoning liquid). MSG was also a hot topic in India in Maggi Instant Noodles, but was later determined that MSG is NOT added as a separate compound.
@@floridacargocat the whole msg topic is a myth and got debunked years if not decades ago. It was a sarcastic paper Published in a science magazine that is basically just humorous posts
One mistake a lot of people make when it comes to New Year's resolutions is neglecting to consider the _time_ they will take up. Like, for example, they resolve to _read_ more. That's laudable, but reading takes _time._ It's not _enough_ to resolve read more. You have to devote more _time_ to it, which means you have to take time away from something _else._ If you don't have a clear picture of what you're going to take time away from, you can't really expect to get more reading _done._
No, it’s not dangerous. I recommend waiting unless you truly need to (travel) for 1-2 days because otherwise whatever gave you the runners will stay inside and it really needs to go. But I always say stop when your thing starts to get formed because if you overdo it you will get a horrible constipation (or even a blockage). There are no other inherent dangers to it and sometimes people with Chron’s will use it for long periods and it helps them a lot. Just discuss it with your doctor.
It works the other way around, too: I lived in a shared apartment for a year with a German-American 12 years ago. I got a drilling headache one day and refused ibuprofen because it gives me a stomachache. Since I couldn't find anything else, I endured it. My roommate went into the bathroom, opened his side of the mirror cabinet and pulled out a rather large bottle of small aspirin tablets from the US. I told him that aspirin was even more harmful to the stomach, but these had a special coating that was supposed to be gentler on the stomach and after some convincing I took one and after half an hour my head was fine and my stomach wasn't grumbling either. And when I had sinus problems, he gave me something special from Tylenol, took it before bed and was able to sleep through it and the next morning I felt better. I haven't found anything comparable here yet. 😊
A lot of the medicine sold in the USA is amazing and has to go through rigorous testing BUT the issue is that it shouldn't be so easily purchased/consumed by purchasers.
Mein Koffer ist leer wenn ich nach Deutschland fliege. Nur mein Carry on hat ein paar Kleidungsstücke. Aber frage nicht wenn es zurück in die USA geht...holy smokes!!
Just love your videos. U do such great work in terms of explaining a lot of stuff to all your viewers. keep up the great work. you rock. respect and love out to ya
Man, this is fun .... watching videos of american people talking about all the stuff from germany they will take back to the US .... 🙂 I have heard about americans taking all sorts of german cookies back to the US, but this is the first time I hear about Ohropax ...... 🙂 And you are absolutely right, they are the only ones that really work .... 🙂
i work at ingles in Georgia and we sell those cookies the vanilla Kiperl or something very similar you might want to check there website if there is one in florida
Hayley, have you tried the "Wellnoise" earplugs from the German pharmacy? I like them best and have tried many, just like you. They are made from silicone and you can find them online, too.
Each time my wife and I come back we stuff our suitcases with lots of bottles of Augustiner beer. Everything else has to fit around them. 😂🍻 Oh, and Lebkuchen (“gingerbread”)! You can get it in the US, even German brands, but they can’t hold a candle to fresh ones or a great brand like Schmidt. Drool!
You don't have to tell anyone that you're in the States, anyone can see that from the bloody life-threatening NEMA socket in the background, where you can touch live parts when the plug is in.
that tea looks like it's also good to drink cold. pro tip: when you brew up a jug of fruit tea to get cold, switch one bag out for a bag of peppermint tea.
In der Apotheke kannst du auch 20er Packungen Ohropax bekommen, und ja, ich liebe und brauche sie auch und nur diese! Nicht diese Schaumstoffdinger. Die 20er Packung besteht auch nur aus Pappe, kein Plastik.
I have some Birkenstocks to satisfy the hippie in me but because I also need to keep my inner punk happy I have a pair of their boots with steel toecaps. Didn't know Birkenstock made anything like that until I saw them in a sale with 50% off!
Hi everybody, I'm from (and actually in) Germany. This video made me smile, another one made me laugh. I appreciate your fresh and somehow innocent look on us!
Hi Hayley :) Enjoying a video from you since a long time :) About the ear plugs I just want to tell you one thing. I know what you are talking about, I like the Soft ones more but love them too. but I only use them if I really have to. Don't get too used to it, because I mentioned problems with my nebenhöhlen :) when you feel dizzy sometimes and little headache, it could be that. also I got ill faster and my eye had something. I think it all had to do with it. it was always wet in there and if something comes in there, it has perfect conditions to chill there. since I don't use them anymore and got used to sounds at sleep again I feel a lot better. I think its a natural ventilating system in your ears that can't work then, cause the wetness can't be regulated when you block the doors always. and over a longer period of time it's not good anymore, it gets bad.
Meßmer tea is awesome but Bünting tea is the original (bit more pricey) so try that out ! (They are sister companys, could be kinda hard to get, idk if they sell it outside of Niedersachsen/Lower Saxony)
hi Hayley, if u like pea-soup i think u like Erwtensoep from the Netherlands. not from a package or can but fresh made, uy can find a recept on the internet. greetings 😁
For me I found a really nice little sausage in a vacuum pack of 20 plus sausages, it had good seasoning and was one of very few we could find that could be fried and cheap.! Also some really nice Ice Creams on a stick with sorbet inside that I have never seen done as nicely
We have some of the products here in the US but they are relatively expensive... ordering from the Sebamed website- it would cost $100 for the fragrance free lotion, face wash, and face cream :/
@@HayleyAlexis Ooph. What a markup :O. The stuff is definitely on the cheaper side when in comes to care products for sensitive skin here in Europe. The lotion is like 2.95€.
Tampons 😅 You are so right! As weired as it sounds, I miss my German Tampons! 🙊 I also don't like to by American Tampons as they come with so much plastic 😬
Tolles video,🔝👍✅️ Do u have Trader Joe's and Aldi down Florida? Up here in Connecticut & Neu York we do. Trader Joe's canned split pea soup is worth trying. It used to come in the small boxes. Pea soup is totally lecker. Aldi may have their version of it too. Also love it that you're into celebrating Christmas for a long time too. Frohe und besinnliche Weihnachtszeit 🌲 🌟🕯
I'll have to try those candies when I visit my bf again lol. I also bring candy back to the US like Kinder Bueno, Knoppers, Hanuta, Nussini, and Milka chocolate bars. Your friend who needs the immodium tho.... lol i hope they've seen a doctor if it's something they need all the time.
Geeze. You're getting more air miles than most pilots! Yeah, Clearwater may be nice, but the temps are always better down where you are. Still, 26C makes good beach days anywhere on the SE coast. Packing the pup and heading to the water!
I think that any sweets/meats are fan favorites (as long as no one is a diabetic). I usually bring special vacuum sausages that I purchase from butchers in Bayern and those go SO QUICK!
Heyy. About the tea. So, I don't wanna sound pretencious, but I'm gonna, but bear with me. Meßmer is not really good tea. I work at a tea store in Göttingen, a reaaaally old one and the owner, this really nice old man, still mixes all of the flavored teas himself and then we sell them loose. Let me tell you, those are some good teas. He really knows his craft. And they're even cheaper than Meßmer if you can believe that, since we have a really small profit margin. Compared to our tea, Meßmer, Teekanne and all those are like the rests at the bottom of the mixing barrel which we don't even sell anymore. 😬 Maybe give it a try if you're ever in Göttingen (which is a really nice city btw).
I use BILSOM 303S instead of Oropax. Though I use my scissor to add a skewed cut to the big end so it fits better to my ear. Works wonders! I even use them for long car rides to keep my tinnitus in check.
