@@rKAL-EL so true. I think Brad is super underrated too. He, like Tim, is sort of minimalist with his playing, at least at first listen. Tim Commerford is dope at creating a kind of suspense in his playing. The minimalism is perfect because it sounds so big and powerful. Aside from that, the way he arranges notes, chords, percussive rhythm, chimes, etc. is brilliant. This dude is a mastermind. Huge, HUGE influence on my sound, for sure. @mrbouncelol
@mrbouncelol 3 года назад
@@johnmartinez7440 Hmm well you will notice they use live performances. That means they need to fight against the lyrics and music (I think in your country it will be Songwriters Guild of America), and then they will need to fight against whomever recorded this particular show (??). If you use straight radio recordings you can have a serious problem because record companies, to put it mildly, are fuckwits. Enormous power. Actually they are additionally stupid, because no one is listening to a 10 second fragment in an analytical internet video like this and thinking I WILL NOT buy that, I liked that, but I'm done! Absurd. But I'm no dinosaur. If anything, people see content like this which stimulates them to enjoy music they've never heard of, and buy it legitimately. But again, I'm no record exec.

@@gingerbearddrift781 I do, mostly. He took the original Marshal GuVnor Mark 1 and used that circuit! So you could get one off ebay/Reverb, then put it in an effects loop to effect only everything above 80hz, run that through an SVT-2, or SVT-VR with the preamp on 10 and the master volume turned down, and the Ampeg 8x10(the older the better as it's all about the speaker's too! The older one's used different speakers so that's a huge factor into his studio tone!) and you'll get close! Or if you can find a Vintage SVT use that! Anything from the 70's will work, even early 80's!

As much as I love, and obsess over, techniques and complicated melodies... Tim was the bassist that made me dial back and focus on my sound, and what I want to add to the mix. Noting that Mic Check, and other simple basslines, had such an impact, I started building my pedalboard. Now, its like doing interpretive dance to control all my gear while shooting notes at the rig like raw material to filter. LOL! Rearranged my entire approach to music! At least from a performance perspective. I still have my wacky slap licks to showboat, my pretty chording on my sixer to sound pretty, and my double tap compositions with harmonics to show off... BUT TO DESIGN EXACTLY THE SOUND THAT SITS IN THE MIX AND ABSOLUTELY NAILS IT: I play simple, yet expressive, and add the expression my pedals can do. WITH OUR POWERS COMBINED, WE ARE CAPTAIN BASSLINE!

Tim Commerforf inspired me to learn, play and enjoy the bass. I probably was 10 or 11 when I heard it for the first time, and the sound his powerful basslines and effects really changed the way I percived the music reality. He really was, is, will be one of the Best!!!

30 years later, it is amazing to analyse music from the 1990-1995 period in the context of everything before and after - it was an epic period.

I learned playing bass with their first record, it changed my mind about all i knew about bass. 1996, no tutorials or tabs, just listening. Tim taught me so much

Learned the entire debut album about 2 months into playing. Took me a good more 6 months to nail and get tight but it's got to be one of THE albums for bass players to learn their chops. Stands the test of time.

Yeah. Rock and goddamn roll, no need (or room) to overplay. Tim’s wall o’ funk is one of the reasons I chose to learn bass (along with Flea and Geddy), thanks! Awesome vid. I never would’ve thought to stack dirt on either side of a wah, I learned something cool today.

My first bass, a cheapo but much beloved Yamaha 4-string, became a beast when I filed out the nut and strung it BEAD. All thanks to a comment someone dropped saying that's what Tim Commerford did. I have no idea if he actually did that, but my old Yamaha became my main bass again, even at my church gig. It was like doing a Stage 2 kit on a Harley. It came alive!

Very nice content ! Just missing two things to have it really amazing : 1- Having on the screen the effects that are on (easier than following the camera to go to Ian's feet) 2- with Rage, the interaction with the kick is a key to understanding how awesome Tim is playing (especially when playing really simple lines with very few notes)

I love Ian's videos, he brings such an energy and enthusiasm to the channel! Personally, I don't follow bassist so much as play bass, but the one bassist that inspired me in my youth was Cliff Burton...I still play Anaesthesia & Orion with some degree of regularity
@buckemptier
@buckemptier 2 года назад
I loved cliff Burton, he is the reason I started playing bass. But when I heard Jaco, it put Cliff into perspective. Jaco was doing Cliff before Cliff was doing Cliff. Not that they are exactly the same, but just that Jaco was an obvious influence on Cliff, and was even better at it. Still love cliff though, I finally bought a Jetglo a rickenbacker about a month ago, which I've wanted ever since I heard Cliff playing one. What sucks is that Cliff was in a band where the Bass was not doing much beside following the guitar, and he was turned down so low in the mix you can hardly hear him in most songs. That always pissed me off about Metallica.

Great bass lines choices. I love each one of these songs. But as you said, only ten songs wasn't enough. You should do next time: Freedom, Revolver, Wake Up, Tire Me, Ashes in The FAll... There are a lot of good ones to play along.

A video on Les Claypool’s Bass Techniques, that’s a definite winner, amongst other, Rex Brown from Pantera, Richard Lewis - Skunk Anansie, Cliff Burton/Jason Newsted - Metallica, Chris Wolstenholme - Muse, John Paul Jones - Led Zeppelin, Nick Oliveri/Michael Shuman - Queens Of The Stone Age, Peter (Hooky) Hook - New Order, James Jamerson - Motown Records, Larry Graham - Sly and the Family Stone, Bootie Collins, Carol Kaye, Geddy Lee - Rush, Flea - Red Hot Chill Peppers, Billy Gould - Faith No More, Dusty Hill - ZZ Top, Mike Kerr - Royal Blood, Mark King - Level 42, Justin Chancellor - Tool, Paul McCartney - The Beatles, Bruce Foxton - The Jam, John Entwistle - The Who, Roger Glover - Deep Purple, Geezer Butler - Black Sabbath, John Deacon - Queen, Jaco Pastorius and I’m sure there’s more. Soz, this might be over kill or just a good starting point 😎

Everything off of King Animal and half of DOTU. Seriously Ben dominates that album, he really came into his own with his doomy sound. Check out the mid section and ending to Bones of Birds and his groove on Applebite. And who can forget the righteous groove of Rowing.
