Should have showed the Grammy's from the year after, when Metallica DID win, and Lars Ulrich started their acceptance speech with "We'd like to thank Jethro Tull for not putting out an album this year..."
That's why the Tull guys weren't there. They figured Metallica would win. It was just kind of a general assumption in the whole music scene. Nobody took into account that stodgy old people made up most of the voting panel on the grammy board. And old people back then absolutely HATED Metallica. I guess one of the many reasons I loved them so much.
I saw Jethro Tull in concert after that and they had fun with it, the dressed up 20 guys in trench coat who all played cut out guitars. Unfortunately the Prog Rock community normally has incredible skills than never gets them any credit, just like jazz.
The funny thing is I've always been a fan of both groups. I just didn't see the twisted logic or justification in that grammy incident. It was like comparing apples to shoes.
100% agree with you, I think that they wanted to piss off Metallica in the worst way possible with a band that has a lead flautist. And wanted to acknowledge Tull but didn't know exactly what category to put them in.
@@etangbose4755 Wayne’s world was actually what brought some of queens songs to be big such as bohemian rhapsody, that song wasn’t popular until Wayne’s world came out
3:36 Steve Severin and Siouxsie Sioux ( the blonde) there behind!, they formed a band a couple months later called "Siouxsie and The Banshees", Post Punk pioneers and founders of the Goth Rock movement/style along with "The Cure" and "Bauhaus" in the 79' - early 80's.
One you forgot: Jim Morrison and the Doors singing the correct lyrics to light my fire. Also, as runner up, Slash cursing on live tv not once, but twice during an acceptance speech.
Every incident from #10 to #5 I saw happen live on TV, and the rest I've seen countless times as archival footage. There could have been no other fitting candidate for Number One on this list. And having Fear's appearance on SNL - the night that turned me on to punk rock forever - kick thungs off? Priceless.
I got goosebumps on the Queen part.. I want more than anything to be on a stage, head banging as hard as I can to some deathcore in front of a huge, moshing crowd 😅
It would have gotten bigger because the fight would have been more rebellious, even though Dee Snider was cool. I guess he really helped in keeping the records coming out without mass censorship. The bootleg market would have been out of this world if it had gone the other way but it would have never stopped rock and roll. Btw, they still don't play glam rock the 80's rock and metal on the radio even though that's what most people listened to back then and still do now. The numbers talk, the concerts everything. Like them or hate them Motley Crue helped define that and broke into it without any help from mainstream at all and got so big they couldn't ignore them any longer but the sure the hell didn't want to sign glam bands and the industry pulled the plug on it when grunge came along. So people went from good looking, getting laid, being decadent (sex, drugs and rock and roll) , to wearing grandpa's clothes and lumber jackets to (heroin and grunge) and for women children's dresses, minnie mouse shoes and red and black shoulder length hair with bangs mostly (blah!) .
I was thirteen when The Beatles were on The Ed Sullivan show,I was glued to our television, about two feet away,on my knees ,bawling like a two year old ,while my brothers laughed their asses off,I was convinced I would one day Marty George Harrison I’m now 71 and I vividly remember every second of that night,it’s still hard to believe John and George are gone,I recently watched an interview here on RU-vid with Ringo,he was asked how he could keep the brat of the drums with all the intense screaming going on,he said he would look at John’s ass… LMFAO
The Manson state of the union one is legendary. I would've taped it on a VHS in the 90s. But now, I would upload both the censored and uncensored version on RU-vid. #MarilynMansonNewAlbum
The people who are actually trying to say the Beatles don't deserve to be on here because they're not rock.....what are you smoking? Even IF you didn't consider them rock they've influenced many many many rock groups as well as metal, pop and even some country. The fact of the matter is the Beatles were honestly much more than just a rock band as they explored many different genres in their tenure as a group.
I think a lot of people feel though that people such as Elvis, and their first appearances on TV, were more important to rock. Although The Beatles are amazing, Elvis and other early artists really worked hard to bring rock to TV and to try to get people to accept it, which lead to rock eventually being accepted. Him and other classic rock artists really helped start the mere existence of rock on TV. At least, that's what I imagine.
I always wished Marilyn Manson had his "Dee Snider" moment in front of Congress or the FCC. He's such an intelligent and articulate guy that it would have been even better than Snider's testimony
They should’ve added the moment where Corey Taylor from slipknot says jump the fuck up and everyone jumps the fuck up that was definitely a time in metal history
Jim Morrison promising not to sing the word “Higher” in Light my fire on the Sullivan show than doing it anyway, resulting in the Doors being banned from the show, should be on the list. Though I’m not sure which one I would remove to make room.
Manson told the truth. The nowadays society is a bitch! They judge you only by your race or beauty, instead of judjing you by your intelligence or now polite you are.
For me this list is a little bit backwards. FEAR on SNL was amazing, especially considering the conservative times and Belushi pulling the wool over the producers eyes saying he'd only come back and host if FEAR could play, telling the producers they were just a normal rock band, lmao. I'd also swap the Nirvana video on this list (or heck even keep it and just make 2 nirvana videos) was when Kurt and Krist refused to lipsync proper or play their instruments live on Top of the Pops and he just stops playing his guitar entirely and in baritone voice starts Teen Spirit with "Load Up on Drugs, Kill Your Friends"...first time seeing that I died laughing so hard and it never gets old to this day. The Rage moment was great too. Marilyn Manson could take a hike...he was cool for a year or two but then became a narcissistic weirdo. Never been a big Beatles fan, but respect them so that moment gotta be on the list. The Sex Pistols one is great too considering the times over there when it was said, along with Steve Jones (by far the coolest member, Sid be damned) with his casual accented "Dirty bahstid...you dirty fuckah. What a fucking rotter." 🤣 🤣 🤣 Great video!
Where's the WHOLE Marilyn Manson #7 clip; when you see all these rappers in the audience reactions? They paid him a visit backstage afterward and he wasn't running his mouth. He later said it was part of his act on the David Letterman show.
Since I've been sober (9yrs) I can be even MORE rude, crude and socially unacceptable than ever before !!! Remember kids ... it's a long way to the top if ya wanna rock 'n' roll !!!
Instead of the Beatles it should have been Elvis on the Milton Berle show. He had the entire adult population clutching their pearls, deejays refused to play him for being vulgar, he was filmed only from the waist up by Ed Sullivan, schools forbade boys to have haircuts like him because he was seen as a bad influence. He changed the entire landscape and opened up the floodgates for all that came after him. He broke racial barriers by not being afraid to perform songs by black artists which was considered taboo by many at that time.
How does No. 3 fit into the 10 Greatest Rock Moments in Live TV History? They sure earned a spot on Top 10 Douchebaggiest Rock Moments, but on this list they are hilariously out of place.
if only in the 80s they had Slayer or Venom on stage on mainstream TV lol this was shocking only for the mainstream audience because metal always had a ton of imagery and themes that can shock
