I have had two shibas now, and absolutely adore this breed. Yes, they can be stubborn, but the loyalty and love they give you makes up for it 1000 fold. Without hyperbolizing or sounding melodramatic, I would absolutely, positively, unequivocally take a bullet for my Shiba’s, because the idea of loosing them just shatters my heart - when I lost the first one, the mental pain, anguish, and overwhelming sorrow was so unbelievably great - that is how much they have imprinted on my heart. Even when I am most irritated and frustrated with my little guy, I can’t stay angry with him long. I become very sad and even cry when I’m away from him too long. His presence in my life so invaluable and adds so much joy and light into my life. To me, my Shiba is truly a priceless gift from god.
Absolutely. Same story here! My first was so independent. He Did get out in the dead of winter. I thought for sure he was a gonner. Apparently he couldn't find his way back to me and ended up 9 miles away at -25° 3 days later at his Mommy's house. Unfortunately on his last excursion he was hit by a car, survived, but had fractured his hips at 11 months old. We'd had pets before but I never cried so hard as the day I had to make That decision. Now my 2nd Shiba is 10 years old, does Not cross the threshold without a leash and still acts like a puppy. 😁👍
The best introduction of Shiba I have encountered so far. My 2 years boy black Mameshiba is now quietly wondering through our house from my son’s room to my bedside to my wife’s couch at dawn and being settled at foot of my wife. I don’t train him, he trained me. He rarely barks. He stares when I eat. He sticks his nose out from small space down below the security wall of balcony to look around all day. He loves to be petted by my right foot on his back. We walk twice a day come rain or come storm or snow. He is my everything.
I had mine for 15 years, she was eventually a good dog but an incredibly difficult puppy/ younger dog. I would definitely not recommend them to anyone who isn't extremely patient and already has experience with hyper dogs... and they can legit dig a hole under your fence in a minute or two and get out. Mine never ran off but she definitely dug out quite a few times
Mine is thankfully not interested in digging his way off the property, but I would never trust him off leash on a walk. And yes, this breed is not for first-time owners. I see more and more of them offered up for adoption and it's heartbreaking. People get them because they "look cute" and don't bother to research the breed. I knew what I was getting into when I got mine as a puppy and still, the first year with him were hell. Even with all the training he got it's still tough even now. I love my dog dearly, but probably wouldn't get a Shiba again tbh.
My Sheba’s have such unique personalities, they are just like my kids. I love them more than I ever thought I would. I’m so happy to have them and can’t imagine being without them.
Great video! Living in Japan for 30+ years I learned that Japanese don't refer to their dog's breed "Shiba-inu". Inu means "dog" in Japanese so it sounds strange to say dog after the breed name. So Japanese will call them just "Shiba" or "Shiba--Ken". Inu can also be read as "ken" in the kanji writing. But it seems that it is not a problem to say Shiba-inu in other countries.
Many Japanese people say Shinba-Ken. But it is not good. because Shiba is Kun-read and Ken is On-read. So Shiba-inu, Kai-ken and Nihon-ken is right reading.
The past decade I only have had Shiba Inu’s, they sure do know how to train their owners! Play time is limited, so we take advantage each play time. I am crazy about them
I found out all of these issues the hardway. My Shiba Inu's name is Harold & he is now 4 years old and still as energetic as ever. We went thru a really rough patch of him running away several times, scarying the crap out of our family, but we are far more careful now and never allow him off leash outside. Excellent video pointing out all of the big issues you have to deal with this great breed. My other dog is a South African Boerboel and weighs 130 pounds of muscle?! They make a hysterical couple.
@@dawnangiulli2695 I tell everyone he pays extreme attention to words and where your eyes go! They really do understand far more than we ever will be able to prove.
I have a three year old male Shiba Inu. He’s the best ever. We got him when he was only eight weeks old and in one week, he was house trained, no accidents! He can be stubborn but personally, Shibas are the best!
Most shiba videos on youtube feel automated, This video captures the soul of the breed. I have a 4 year old shiba and there's not one thing i would disagree about in this video. They truly aren't like any other dog you've owned. If you ever get a chance to get one, do it! You' won't regret it. My shiba (Mia) has brought joy back into our household. My son found a best friend and her personality fits in perfectly with us. She's no lapdog, but we get tons of what we call "Mia love" which we appreciate more.
We have 2, 4 month old Sheebs. OH MY GOD, are my hands full. Talk about stubborn, and training is going so slow, but they are so smart. They learned the word"come" in 15 minutes. Next we try a bath. should be lots of fun. I may just hire a groomer. That scream is not for the faint hearted. I bet the neighbors think we are beating them, or something. We love them so much. they are half brother and sister.
Gosh my shiba can shed enough hair to make another shiba even if I comb her every day. When I asked her where did she get all her hair come from, she just rolled her eyes, turned around so I could comb the other side.
My friend and my Aunt & Uncle both have a Shiba. They've never met but they both do the weirdest behavior. Throughout the day, they beg to be let outside the front door and sit on the porch. They both just stare at people going by. Anybody else Shiba do this?
As the owner of a shiba-inu I confirm, this is all true I would also add that they very rarely bark. Aside from shiba-scream sometimes, they mostly whine if they are annoyed and want something you don't provide them with, like on the walks or when you temporarily restrict the room where they allowed to be
I have the challenging task of watching my daughter’s Shiba Inu for a week while she goes on vacation with her boyfriend at the end of October I will do a follow up
Mine is a cat-dog too 😅 He runs after butterflies or moths, when it’s fall time he chases autumn leaves 🍂 lol. He almost never barks but makes some funny noises like a fox 🦊 Love him so much
3:38 Keep in mind that they are not only curious but have a very strong hunting instinct! If they once spot an animal nearby it's impossible to regain their attention. They are extremly fast and they will kill small animals.
I have two shibas, one from puppyhood and one I adopted from someone else. They are as different as people in their personalities. Zoomies are most certainly a thing, especially at nighttime! I doubt I'll ever want a different breed.
Yep, yep, and, yep. Ours is a Shiba/Shep mix but he does display many of the things mentioned herein. He does have the language you need to learn. If you want your Shiba to do something,it has to be his idea and when he’s ready to do it. He has this special stare too. Maybe it’s something you asthe owner forgot to do? He can def give sass. He’s good groomer. Sometimes does the zoomies. I like how he sounds his horn, or tuba? Sometimes it can be very deep in tone. He usually does that after he comes back into bedroom to wake me up with a lick. Sometimes he’ll pick up his brother’s chew bone or he’ll walk a few steps, drop the bone and expect my husband to pick it up.
Ahahah it's scary how my (white/cream) shiba is unlike the classic Shiba. He grew up going to a dog park everyday and is now the most sociable dog ever, cheering other dogs and people as well as asking them scratchies lol. That said, outside the sociability/affection aspect, he is pretty much how described in this video hahah
My Maya was an amazing Shiba. I trained her to be off leash and she listened without any treats. Understood to not cross streets even when chasing squirrels, and was super curious. She made walks interesting everyday.
I have 2, nothing like cats. Nothing like cats at all. One of mine thinks he's the joker, trickster, the gotcha man! I know he's up to no good because his eyes are sparkling thinking about how he's shocked me. I know. The breeder said always keep them on a leash unless they are in a paddock or your secure garden. This is true. They are the naughtiest kids in the school, but you can enjoy their mischief, as you don't have to worry about them growing up and getting a job! One groomer barred one of mine, because she screamed throughout the entire groom and people were going into her shop to see what she was doing to the dogs. She was not happy, the groomer that is.
I loved this video, it made me laugh because everything said is so true. We were fortunate enough to have our last Shiba Inu for fourteen years before her passing. We are now on our second Shiba Inu and they definitely are not a pet for people that crave that cuddling, snuggling dog they almost have that they can take you or leave you personality. That being said you know that they love and would protect you with their life. They are the perfect addition to any family that understand their personality. You're not going to change their personality so if you can't understand or adapt to this breed PLEASE don't adopt or buy one because if you decide you no longer want your Shiba that's heart breaking for them and cruel.
Ive been lucky enough to be owned by shibas since 2007. I currently have a 2 year old sassy female named Kimiko and this video is 10/10 in describing her.
I will have to also throw in there something that was said isn't 100% true. While they'll cuddle for a short time... They don't tend to cuddle for a super long time. They will sleep with you but not right up on you. I have to agree my Angel is super independent but then again she was a rescue and didn't have the best beginning in her life but you can rest assure she is very spoiled at a very young 12 years old... I've had her since she was 2.
same i got mine from a shelter. it was literally meant to be. i found the breed online and said i wanted 1. just so happened a few weeks later the local humane society got one in. i instantly went up there and picked her up. she is my best friend. when my mother was diagnosed with cancer, my foxes knew something was wrong, she never left her side.
They like to climb chain link fences. They are fox like. Hence the faces. Yes, there are different colors, but the preferred color in Japan is the fox like colors.
The black Shiba Inu is more stubborn and cautious than the brown, and is not recommended for first-time dog owners. The other two colors are hard to come by because the chances of being born in the first place are so low.
I'm watching this as my own shiba lays next to me and this definitely describes her, we got her a year ago from her previous owner that own a pitbull that bullied her so at first we thought cause of that she was depressed and always look sad but we learn that how they all seem to act like, she is in a better place now with my two cats, except sometimes one of my cats try to act tough and slap my dog Serra but she just took it and walked away, it's kinda funny😅
Great content, as always! A bit off-topic, but I wanted to ask: I have a SafePal wallet with USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (behave today finger ski upon boy assault summer exhaust beauty stereo over). What's the best way to send them to Binance?
They Hate Dogs with Bad manners who run at them and some can say they are aggressive it is Not they Just react telling the other dog to Keep away ,Most male shiba Dont Like other Dogs ,Also the Side Eye they give as a sign of disgust to put there Humans in there place ,If you want a dog that goes Potty in the Garden this is Not the dog for you they dont Potty on their own territory its Out even at 11pm and its got to be the right place also Love the wind up there Bum and Please dont look at me while I go Potty its private ,
Mine will pee when I walk him. He won't poop for me. My husband has to be walking him for him to poop. They like to pee on the neighbour's property, not their own. Mine would poop occasionally in his fenced in yard, but never, ever pee there.
I've a Sheltie, and he also has a discriminating taste in other dogs, rarely is one to rush to the dog park gate when a new dog arrives. But most females he's happy with.
Actually this vid and entire comment section are the best honest description of what Shiba is. I agree with almost all of them strongly. And my Shiba is my first, my last, and my everything.
It’s also Very important if someone else watches them to use a harness & leash. As this video states they will lose their heads & will dart the moment u think it’s ok to weed for a few minutes because they’re relaxed & loose in the yard. They’re are crazy fast. Thankfully mine ran to some children & they asked if I wanted them to grab his collar. “YES” as they saw me running fullvtilt around the corner in my bare feet & Ivwas still fast at 30!
In our case for several hours is fine. But initially he barked a bit. After he was convinced that we come back, he was ok. But we don’t want to do it so often, mostly when we eat out at night. We set his dinner or snacks without fail before we go.
I have a ship love her to bits very very loyale gets very upset if she thinks u r leaving her behind im sure screams she made as we where moving was her shiba scream i knew dtraight awsy why she was doing becoude i have 5 big dogs i was neat her put others in big cages to move them she w aas last to load gt soo xcited couldnt wait t o get in cage very happy mr n her and my others love swiming sdhe even swims in winter n loves it i run 3 of my big dogs at once not all get along and yes she loves her space of her own amazing dog
