That ending monologue though. With this being a horror channel, I never would have guessed it would be so wholesome and profound like that. It's a great thing for people to do that instead of just simply saying "If you're going through something, here's some numbers." Or something along those lines. I appreciate you. Thank you for actually getting it right, for when people say "There's a bright side to the dark side." It's not accomplished quite right, but these people know.
actually, The Happening is based on an actual phenomenon. its been proven that plants can warn each other of attacks and some have produced "defensive measures" like becoming more toxic to drive off predators. yeah they went to extremes with The Happening, but i think tweaking it a bit would make it terrifying.
I personally feel that the concept of the Happening per se is very much terrifying. It is a threat no one can defeat or overcome; at best you can hide or run away for a while. Just because the movie was poorly executed doesn`t make the idea bad.
Had a similar issue happen during "I know what you did last summer" when they open a trunk stuffed full of crustaceans. Someone yelled out "OH MY GOD SHES GOT CRABS!" The next 20 minutes of the film was unwatchable, as rolling sputtering of laughing kept happening in the movie.
The Omen scene I think is a pretty unfair choice. The decapitation effects may look dated now, but it was a pretty shocking scene back in the 70s. You have to watch this stuff within the context of when they were made and what was available to film makers at that time.
I agree. That scene was a big deal when the movie first came out. When I saw the movie waaaay back, I remember thinking 'geez he shows that decapitation from a lot of angles' but I never noticed the poor quality of the fake head ... until this video.
The octopus scene reminds of that episode of That's So Raven when Raven ruins Corey's birthday party when they turn on the lights and realize the snake that she's "wrestling" is a stuffed animal lmao
To me it's like an episode of the X-Files called Teso Dos Bichos which featured a scene where Scully is attached by feral cats. But because Gillian Anderson is allergic to cats, she had to pretend to fight with a fake cat, which resulted in a silly-looking scene.
the amount of strength you'd need to stab someone with corn, it would be easier just to punch a fist through them. The corn woud be mush before the guy took any serious injury.
Yeah and could they maybe have found something more stabbie like a knife? Or a fork, or spoon? Or broken a glass over his dead then stabbed him with the remaining shards.
Absolutely. It was done much better in Demon Knight where the bloke with evil powers smashes his fist through the head of a poor cop. To add to your statement, I remember someone doing a slow-mo test with a super potatogun, and while bone-cracking and possibly lethal, the veg is no match to human body.
The beheading scene from The Omen was considered a great special effect for it's time. (I know others have pointed this out, but it's the 3rd time I have seen it on a list like this.)
I mean, you can't really deny that even if the effects were great for the time, EVERYTHING becomes absurd after more than, like, one or two instant replays.
To be honest it's a quite descent scene. Considering the time it was shot. But still theres something funy about the fake head going for a backflip or something.
That part at the beginning when he stabbed that guy on the bed several times the blade was going through. And than folded it up, with him still on it was pathetic
Although it wasn't a death, my favorite scene was "got yer nose". Even better is the story behind it. It wasn't Robert Englund in that scene, it was his stand in. Apparently Englund was filming some of Camp Crystal Lake scene at the time. When it came to the part where he sticks the blades up her nose the stand in, because he was afraid he would hurt Rowland, kept messing it up. So a stage hand grabbed the glove and did that part for him.
You guys are right about those cheesy kills. But it was awesome to see Freddy and Jason go head to head. I would love to see more horror crossovers. Candyman vs pinhead cenobites would be cool.
Isn’t the evil entity in Children of the Corn called “He Who Walks BEHIND the Rows”? Not AMONG? The Dresden files named one of the important villains after it even.
I love Jules' words of wisdom at the end of his videos. It really helps me believe I'm really not alone having these mental and life issues in general, and helps me keep my head up when things aren't going so well.
Jeepers Creepers had that fatal flaw of having a pedophole invent the franchise. You know, the franchise about a killer who kills mostly teens and keeps all the good parts of them for himself. Not sure what went wrong.
Agreed, that scene was classic and when it came out, there were no home video players to pause and see the flaws in the effects. The same could be said for a few of the entries here.
Yes, that one I don't get. At least not for the reason mentioned (killer plants). To me that's an interesting premise. There are plants that have hallucinogenic properties and other plants that will straight up kill you if consumed. What's to say evolution won't someday allow said plants to use said properties offensively as opposed to just defensively?
Jules, I can't tell you how many times that ending to your video has touched my spirit and made my day so much better. I struggle with depression and PTSD and movies help me cope with both. Your lists, though, those have helped me cope with life in 2020! Thank you!!!
The BBQ death at the end of Final Destination made me crack up. I don't know why. It felt so tacked on and lame for the final sting of a movie that still makes me wary about driving behind a logging truck.
Idk bro I thought it was funny. And I thought the movie wasn’t even scary. I’m not trolling, just saying my opinion. I guess “what’s scary” truly is subjective. And I saw the movie when I was 13 in the theaters.
Actually, Ed Wood stole the Octopus on a Warner Bros set but forgot to still the motor that made it move. Therefore, the actors had to make it move themselves
I want to thank you for the conversation at the end of the video. I'm not at my worst, currently, but it still touched me that you had the compassion to maybe be the voice someone needed to hear to avoid self harm.
I first watched Halloween 4 with my older brother and his friends around that age. The shotgun impalement is an odd choice for this list, though the scene of Myers crushing Brady’s head/face with his bare hands freaked me out lol
I love when horror movies break the spell by doing something unexpectedly funny. There's only so much tension I can take before feeling ill. The Final Destination series is hilarious - I love the Rube Goldberg-esque manner death orchestrates his revenge kills.
Jules. I really appreciate you sending the message of positivity. You really helped me in tough times. I appreciate you. You are loved. You have value. These messages in the videos you put in, are just some bit of light in the dark for some. They were for me. I hope others can take some compassion from them. Love, One Canadian fan.
Jules, you're a class act! Thanks for the mention about mental struggle, an issue many people have to deal with and suffer in silence either by choice or lack of it.
"This film has literally everything; vampiric incest, demons transforming into babies, killer cats [...]" did anyone else hear this in stefon's voice lol
I still think those suicide scenes in the Happening are haunting. There’s something eerie about their slow movements, like in an instance they are no longer in control. And you don’t know when that instance happened, it just happens.... the idea of a zookeeper just standing and staring while a tiger eats him is scary. No screaming or resistance, just complete compliance. In contrast, I found the death where the woman ran out the window in Birdbox to be ridiculous.
@@gaaralvr4695 Oh absolutely, I agree with you. The slow, quiet compliance got to me more as well. I meant more like how the energy is similar in both movies, but they were received very differently by the viewers.
@@gaaralvr4695 THANK YOU! I watched The Happening as a kid with my parents and was absolutely aghast with what I was seeing. And this is coming from someone who watched Alien when he was 7 and loves watching horror movies. Something about the suicides in The Happening is so absolutely brilliantly done. Its a lot more direct at you. It feels a lot more out of your control. The feeling of helplessness is a lot bigger. That first shot of the girl stabbing her neck while the other person watches, it still haunts me. The little girl saying calculus over and over. The movie deserves more credit especially after Bird Box
I don’t understand how M. Knight keeps getting such big stars to be in his movies when they have to know that the chances the movie will be terrible and astronomical! And he also must have blackmail information on movie executives.
I don't see what's so goofy about plants emitting a toxin that makes people kill themselves. Plants do that. They emit chemicals that influence behavior. It's a thing. The Happening isn't a good movie, but that doesn't make the premise any less plausible.
yea, except for the fact that the movie says that every single plant life has simultaneously evolved to emit the same toxin, a concept that is genuinely hilarious
yeah, that thing of "hating Shyamalan is cool" as lasted too long. (And ok, i´m not saying that the movie is great, but the topic is death been silly, and this moviehas some pretty good ones)
Shyamalans whole thing in his nature movies is nature always wins. We've been cutting down forests and jungles since day one. Nature can't win. So plausible.......
Vile Nightmare but even in the movie it didn’t wipe everyone out, it simply effected a large area. We have also seen that while we do destroy nature, it’s going to try and take as many of us as it can.
There's a fungus that emits spores that turn ants into zombies whenever too many ants invade its territory. This inspired the background story of the "The Last Of Us" video game.
Yes I was looking for this comment I watched that film over and over again when I was a kid. It really got under my skin after awhile. I guess it really depends on if you can believe that plants could evolve to defend themselves from us.
Have you seen the alt ending when Frost turns himself into a blood monster or maybe he summoned it (been a while)? Looked like Blade was fighting jelly. I'm not surprised it wasn't used.
Sometimes there is a comic element to gore. When we were younger my cousin tried to show off chopping wood with an axe, the log bounced up and hit him in the face. His knees buckled like a cartoon and it was hilarious. He had to have stitches, there was a lot of blood and I had to leave the room at the doctors office because I was still giggling. It’s part nervous reaction, part dark humour.
"The *Albeeno*--" Me: What--? "The Albeeno spider--" Me: Y-you mean Albino?? "......Anyways, the Albeeno-" Edit: Guys it was a joke, don't come at me ;-; Edit Edit: Wow, people really can't take a joke, jesus-

Thank you for explaining Dreamcatcher. I read the book and hated it with a passion. Forced myself to finish it because I did want to know what happened. But it was painful. I guess I repressed it because I couldn't remember what happened lol
I feel compelled to mention that King has a thing for corn fields, and rightfully so. They have a strangely sinister overtone and come off as vaguely mysterious. It's actually kind of a neat thing to pick up on.
Okay. I don't really get how "The Happening" was that torn apart. I remember when I watched that movie the first time. The scene when the cascade of people jumps of the building like lemmings got me unexpected and left a deep impression. That was so far the most disturbing scene I've witnessed in a movie and I've seen "Nightmare On Elm's Street" and "IT" back when I was 6-7 years old (okay, they had me pretty fucked up as well)... But that scene was so surreal but seemingly possible that it freaked me the fuck out... Also the background with plants releasing toxins that would supress the self-preservation in a human (make better research next time, will ya) makes total sense, because that's what plants do... When they face a threat they evolve to release stuff or contain stuff, that prevents their enemies to eat/destroy them... That plants would evolve to release a toxin targeted towards humans makes evolutionary sense... The reason why that one bombed so hard is because people thought that would be a ridiculous explanation, because seemingly it's still up for discussion that to some degree plants are living, adapting things and because people don't know shit about evolutionary biology... But it was actually scientifically accurate. That's how plants deal with threats... At least that's one way and perhaps the most effective to be displayed in a movie...
That scene was also burned into my mind. I was kinda young at the time, so to see suicide was very shocking. The opening scene of the American Grudge also mentally scarred me for the same reason, and I was even younger lol
The Happening was a pretty good premise, personally I feel like it would have been better executed if it was specific types plants doing it instead of just all plants. Having a scene focused on the characters researching the situation would have been cool.
There is a scene similar to the one from "Jeepers creepers" on this list, in "Deadly friend". An old crone gets a basketball thrown at her head which explodes and the headless corpse flails about before collapsing. Don't know if it was meant to be funny, but it made ME laugh.
That reminds me of the death of one of the witches in The Mystery of the Star: basically the same thing, but the weapon of murder was magic, mystical green fire was coming out of the stump, the flailing was faster... and I guess that she only fell after *run straight into a wall*
Jules your little inspirational message at the end is said with so much sincerity it really warms my heart. I'm currently going through a really terrible and painful moment in my life right now and that little bit of encouragement is very helpful and needed. Thank you ❤️
Jack Torrance in The Shining? That very last scene at the end where you see him sitting frozen in the snow with that goofy face makes me giggle every time.
It should have been. The movie was presented as dead serious. If they would have given it a similar vibe as say "A Cabin in the Woods", it might have saved the entire movie.
Yep same! I didn't find the concept silly at all. There are so many weird and wonderful survival mechanisms in plants and animals. Kinda made it more creepy knowing that plants don't have brains or emotions, so was indiscriminate about who died. Just that they needed to survive their biggest threat. Well that's what I thought of the movie :)
I know what you mean. The idea was good but I can also understand why it did so poorly. What I don't get is how a movie like the happening can be hated but you have a movie like Witch, where nothing happens till the last 20 minutes of the movie can be considered a horror master piece.
I liked it, it’s all about preferences but I thought it was interesting. Kind of ominous and as you said offsetting. Some movies that are supposed to be so big and so good I think can be silly so 🤷🏼♀️
I agree, but I think it could have been executed a lot better. I like slow-burn horror that really builds a sense of dread. Looking back at it now though, Mark Wahlberg’s character is kinda dumb and detracts from the mood of the film.
I actually love The Happening and think it makes a lot of since. Humans cut down so many trees and take over so much land that mother nature fights back (protects itself). Also, when she hit her head against the glass, that scene generally terrified me as a child.
I enjoyed this video and have a question about The Happening... spoilers. Has anyone considered that, within the reality of the movie, there was no cause and that it was M. Night’s take on mass hysteria and fear? That the ‘plant’ story is just an in world justification people tell themselves.
That sounds a lot like Contagion, but, within The Happening, there's no alternative to the reasoning given. I mean, they literally say it's the plants, so why would anyone think otherwise? It's even "shown" how the plants are moved by the wind (which is when they give away the spores or whatever substance to the air).
Everything you said is right Luis but, coming from the guy who made The Village, Signs and The Sixth Sense, questioning the official story often leads to the real story. Meaning it was a snowball effect of linking dramatic and traumatic events into a single happening after which the masses could only be calmed with a crazy enough story to justify what everyone had done.
@@kohaku1992 I know. I just like speculating. Even if it wasn’t an intended meaning, it does work as an example of what it feels like to be lost in a chaotic time when no one really has a handle on things that leads to the creation of uninformed but shared stories about: “That time plants made everybody crazy and depressed.”
@@Billturby Yeah, for sure. It is a great theory, even if it doesn't meet the "canon" of the movie. But, of course, everyone is free to understand any movie as they please! There's never only one way of seeing things.
The difference between the 2 movies however is "the happening" death scenes were caused by a type chemical released by plants meanwhile "Bird box" has demons in it that caused other people's deaths.
The nanny suicide from The Omen makes me laugh my ass off every time. Lol she smiles and jumps stupidly and all these kids are watching and they scream and cry omg it’s hysterical
*"Sleep Walkers" ~* Cameo appearances by some of the biggest names in all of Hollywood.... For some bizarre reason, literally the best acting performance was turned in by Clovis.... the cat. Not even joking!
The plants talking in the Happening. Yeah. Plants actually do just that. The smell of freshly cut grass? That's a chemical warning to other plants. I knew that, a quite a bit of the biology behind it, before I saw the movie and that made it terrifying
@@paulbennett2284 at the 2:43 mark the narrator says "not only does he shoot her with the gun, he also impales her".......though he never shot the gun at all, just used it to impale.
Technically, King has done THREE movies involving death and corn. Remember the ending of Secret Window? Yup. The one where he buries the bodies and plants corn on top of them (because that's what a guy in a Maine suburb would do, right?).
I wish he would tell us why he has a fascination with corn lol. Like did he choke on some as a kid and now sees it as evil? 😂 I genuinely would like to know why.
