Pure white noise is a high-pitched noise with a constant power of a signal in the frequency band. What sounds complicated can also be easily explained: It sounds similar to a waterfall, or as if no station is tuned on a radio. So it helps the brain to ignore the unpleasant frequencies, i.e. background noise. Therefore, the noise is said to have a calming effect and to relieve headaches and migraines. White noise is also used very specifically in psychoacoustics to treat tinnitus but also to reduce stress and increase concentration.
