You want both nuts on the keeper side of the bolt you are shortening. After cutting to length, undo the nuts and it will correct the threads at the cutting point.

That one with the magnetizing of the Phillip's Head bit would be pretty handy. Personally I wouldn't need that with my drill, but having a magnet on a few of my hand screwdrivers would be great.

Thanks, the bolts protect the threads. Don't turn a wet paintbrush upside down. The paint will slip into the ferrule and leak onto the handle; or dry and ruin the bristles. Needle-nosed pliers hold small nails well, too! Keep the hacks and tips coming . . .

Don't use the first one EVER! Reason being if the sawblade grabs it can shatter and cause you some serious injuries. Even 'bi-metal' blades can do this. It's up to you but, for the few extra minutes it takes to cut it conventionally I wouldn't risk it.
@martossssss
@martossssss 8 лет назад
And if you value the saw blade more than your life, still don't do it, because you'll be using the saw blade at one position only, which will make it wear at this position faster and shorten its life
@RomrotMechanikos

Yeah, for that one I'd rather use my lathe.

@donfoster5576
@donfoster5576 7 лет назад
And no matter how you cut the bolt, it's a good idea to thread a nut (or chaser or die) up past the cut location BEFORE cutting. Then, when you unscrew it down over the fresh cut, it re-forms and cleans the bunged-up threads.

1. There's no point measuring the depth of the drywall anchor, as the drywall is at most 1/2" in your house, and tour drilling farther than that. 2. if you hit your hands with a hammer you need to practice banging nails because you just suck at it. 3. screws, that's what predrilling is for 4. don't trust a guy that uses a mason's hammer to drive nails
@syclone3040

You hit the nail on the head on that one! I like how he shows you how not to hold nails with your hands......and then holds nails with his hands.

@AsiAzzy
@AsiAzzy 7 лет назад
No point in measuring the anchor? I have all the sizes of anchors around and I usually have concrete in my house. Other popular choice for walls is AAC blocks, cement blocks, masonry blocks with holes or without... so why not measure? Drywall panel are so thin that it does not matter as the anchor will go trough it and the hole is a trough hole.. while concrete is solid and requires a blind hole. As for measuring.. you have to measure the screw as well (and the bracket you are fixing)
@psyience3213
@psyience3213 7 лет назад
AsiAzzy concrete is a different story. He's talking about drywall. In concrete it's important to measure the depth of the drill, then again you want the drill to go a little deeper than the screw. And for that matter, i'd just use a concrete screw e.g. tapcon

If the screw is tight going into wood then use a pilot hole.
@scorchedearth1451
@scorchedearth1451 8 лет назад
When drilling a hole in the wall, you should take the lengt of the screw, not of the plug. The screw could be going through the plug, and the hole is not deep enough then.
@scorchedearth1451
@scorchedearth1451 8 лет назад
Dario de nero You're right. My mistake. But the screw _could_ come out of the bottom of the plug (stronger that way, because you're sure to use the whole length of it), and then the hole is not deep enough.

He has a cheap drill 😂😂 that's why it can't go all the way in it looks like he bought it in Walmart or in target he need too get a Dewalt or Milwaukee no one will wait 2 hours too cut tile wtf 😂😂
@johndough9187
@johndough9187 7 лет назад
If the screw perforates the plug, they don't match each other.
@scorchedearth1451
@scorchedearth1451 7 лет назад
John Dough The length of the screw is what matters. Not the length of the plug. To make sure you use the total length of the plug, the screw should go through.
@johndough9187

Thanks for the info on this video. I was able to cut a screw using your drill & hacksaw method in about half the time. The real benefit was the clean cut on the screw. It was a nice even cut that took only a few licks with a file to finish. Thanks again for your time & effort.

@ 00:45, no hand drill is meant for the chuck to be forced sideways, but to be forced in line with its central axis. It may look convenient but it does not pay in the long run.

Having cut many bolts over the years, I would recommend placing another nut up near the bolt head. After the bolt is cut(whether using the drill or manually) the thread is probably messed up a bit at the cut site. Removing the nut over the cut will help restore the thread, making it easier to then start a nut on the shortened bolt when you put the bolt to use.

Rather than soap , drag your screw threads across a candle, when you drive them the friction will melt the candle wax making a much more efficient lubricant, (It also coats the screw adding more rust protection)
@StrangerInAStrange
@StrangerInAStrange 8 лет назад
Run the nuts onto the OTHER side of the line (onto the half you are going to keep, with the head) before cutting. This way, when the nuts are spun off, they may clean up rough edges, making it easier to thread nuts back on.

I have an issue with your first hack, the screw cutting with hacksaw. It is guaranteed to bur the end of the screw, creating some difficulty starting the nut. You must put the two locked nuts on the side of the screw that you wish to use. After cutting you remove the nuts and in the process remove burs assuring the nut will start easily.

Not bad, coole ideas. When Cut the screw to make but the nuts better on the side of the thread that is needed later. So you can simultaneously when unscrewing the nuts immediately recut the possibly when sawing damaged threads back or repair when the nuts are removed. So better on the other side of the nuts screwed the screw saw off. Sorry for my bad english something, my last lesson here is about 30 years ago in Germany ;-)
