At the end, Hiccup says that none of this would have happened if he had not shot down Toothless in the first place. Toothless doesn’t seem so fazed by this, indicating that he did in fact know that Hiccup was the one to shoot him down.

Toothless understands every word Hiccup says. Each of his reactions to what Hiccup talks about proves that. And even, after Hiccup told his mother about how he is the one who shot Toothless down, his immidiate reaction was like "I don't care bout that anymore OuO" not a know nothing face

I can completely Unconfirm the "Hiccup in a coma/Dream" theory, in one of the episodes and Dragons race to the edge [Which is cannon] hiccup mentions 'Tornado' [Stoicks old dragon] to stoick and in How to Train Your Dragon 2 we can see skullcrusher [Or bone crusher I can't remember the name] was introduced in that movie and in the third movie 2 another reference to race to the edge, in one of the episodes where the Skrill comes back Hiccup and the Gang try to trap it the same way they did in Riders of Berk [or Defenders of Berk] but the Skrill remembers that trap instead traps Hiccup and Toothless in the ice cave So I'm pretty sure Hiccup wasn't in a dream or a coma during Riders/Defenders of Berk

I have a really good argument against the Hiccup's dream theory. When Eret tells the riders about Grimmel in the third movie, he describes him as a villain that likes to get into the mind of his prey and control its choices and that everything is a game to him. That he is a very smart dragon hunter. Hiccup then says "we've dealt with his kind before". If nothing from the shows is canon, then who is Hiccup talking about? Drago? It can't be because Drago is the complete opposite kind of person to what Eret describes Grimmel to be. But Viggo Grimborn from Race to the Edge matches every single one of the things Eret describes about Grimmel and is much closer to being of Grimmel's "kind" than Drago, who is the only person Hiccup could possibly be talking about if only the movies were canon. Hiccup's single line about dealing with a cunning, manipulative dragon hunter in the past singlehandedly makes the shows canon, because Viggo Grimborn is the only hunter Hiccup could possibly be talking about that matches Eret's description of Grimmel's "kind". And if Viggo is canon, so is Race to the Edge, and if Race to the Edge is canon, so is Riders and Defenders because Race to the Edge is kickstarted by Dagur escaping from prison after being captured at the end of Defenders. (Plus, this is a little bit of personal headcanon, but in Hiccup's closing narration in the second movie, he mentions how their enemies have armies and armadas, which I take as a reference to Riders and Defenders since Alvin had an army of Outcasts, and Dagur was notorious for his enormous armada). (Not to mention, the third movie also confirms Gift of the Night Fury is canon because Astrid tells Hiccup when he's making Toothless' new tail, "you tried it once before. He didn't want it." I absolutely love that they snuck these obscure, one-liner references to the shows in that only the more dedicated fans are going to catch.) And to be fair about Hiccup not seeming bothered that he lost his leg, he's a Viking and most of the village seems to be missing at least one limb, so it doesn't seem to be all that uncommon and occurence that you might actually be expecting to happen at some point in your life if you were born in this universe

Imma bout to destroy the "toothless can fly theory". Seen in the first film, toothless can fly, he just can't coordinate. Which was why he was trapped in the coven. He would beat his wings a few times to get himself hovering, but he couldn't dive up, as seen in literally every series and movie's. When a dragon flies, it launches itself up then proceeds in any direction. Without coordination, they cannot go in any direction. Hence, they can fly, but can't hover.

I think that Toothless’s tail fins are actually just vital for steering. So when he flew straight up, he didn’t need much steering, and so he was able to fly straight up

Toothless knew Hiccup shot him down. Hiccup said so when he found Tothless all tangeled in his net. He also said " I Did this, I did this." After deciding Not to kill Toothless. So Hiccup cut Toothless free, expecting him to fly away. This was before they made friends. Also a good reason why Toothless screamed in Hiccup's face, he was letting Hiccup know just how mad he was - short of killing him. I believe Toothless forgave Hiccup, because Hiccup did everything withing his ability to "fix" Toothless's tail and helped him fly again.. When Gobber said " A Downed dragon is a dead dragon" in the first movie, Hiccup stayed up all night making Toothless a new tail fin. And then was thrilled that it worked. Hiccup was still learning his smithing trade, he built what he could at the time. The older Hiccup got, the more improvements he made.

Also, Toothless understands exactly what Hiccup means and knows that Hiccup shot him down, but didn't eat his leg as both Gobber and Stoic react like it was burnt off in the fall rather than ripped away, which would immediately arouse suspicion

I think the bone knapper and the armorwing are the exact same dragon species, they just use different materials for their armour.

I always assumed Toothless accidentally bit his leg off as he was trying to save him. He dives straight down and Hiccup’s legs were up and his head was down so Toothless reached for the closest thing, he caught him but the damage was bad enough that he lost the leg.

Infact, Toothless actually knows. It is in one episode, Hiccup said, “I will never regret shooting you down bud, i- you know what i mean.” So ya!

The dream theory is strongly disproven. The entire Race To The Edge series aligns perfectly with the movies. it gives you a lot of back story to things in the other movies that you probably wouldn't know where they came from if you haven't seen it; like Hiccup's wingsuit or Zippleback sword, or his flaming sword period, or the scar on Toothless's leg, etc. At the end of the series, it shows you how Hiccup's mom got her bewilderbeast: it was the egg that Hiccup saved! Also in the last episode, Drago is even shown! it ties in so beautifully I was shocked.

I think Toothless knew but didn’t care, for Hiccup tried to help him after. Sure that is a old dragon hunter trick but, dragon hunters NEVER repaired the injury. So, Toothless was ok with Hiccup even though he tore his tail. But when Toothless tried to save Hiccup from the fire he couldn’t reach him in time and grabbed the closest thing to him, Hiccups leg. And when Toothless yanked Hiccup’s leg so he could protect him it snapped off. But, the force Toothless had used to pull Hiccup’s leg to save him had thrown Hiccup up into his wings.

Toothless does know that’s why hiccup jokes about his leg and how toothless got him back

I think this theory is better: Toothless did not deliberately eat hiccups leg for a snack, that would not make sense. When hiccup fell in the fire, toothless needed some way to grab onto hiccup so that he could wrap his wings. Therefore, toothless bit off his friend’s leg accidentally in the process

I’m pretty much down with all the theories except the “it was all a dream” theory. And also, the “toothless doesn’t know what he’s saying”. That makes no sense to me, Toothless has been seen reacting as if he understands human conversation perfectly, so why would “I’m the one who shot him down” be the exception?

The thing is, if toothless bit off hiccups leg he would've burned right away in the fire.

If anyone remembers in the 1st how to train your dragon film hiccup is falling straight into the fire and toothless could only grab his leg to save him because of the way he was falling. So I don't really think that toothless ate hiccups leg it was probably amputated.

The one about there being more Night Furies might actually be confirmed by something Grimmel says in the third film. When he explains to the thug chiefs where the Berkians might be moving to, he mentions "Night Furies can't survive in the cold, so they can't have gone north." Contradictory to what we see in most of the movies, Berk is always described as snowy and cold. Berkians are based on Vikings, who lived in Scandinavia, in the northern part of the world (Sidenote, Johann the trader from the series mentions plenty of real life places, so I can safely assume this takes place in the same or a parallel world as earth). As we know, Grimmel hunted most Night Furies down to near extinction. He knows where to find them and where they can't survive. His knowledge is legit. He never looked near the Barbaric archipelago because he believed no Night Fury could live in such circumstances.

I mean later in the other movie when Toothless meets the light Fury, all dragons bow down to him. So, he is the King of dragons.

It may be so that the events of riders of berk wasn't mentioned in HTTYD 2 or 3 but they were metioned in dragons race to the edge and that is the prequel to HTTYD 2

I'm pretty sure it was when Toothless caught Hiccup in the first film when he lost the leg. It was the closest thing he could grab as the fire was engulfing them. So in essence, accidental amputation that becomes instantly cauterized. They won't show Hiccup's left foot when Toothless rolls over because it would've been too graphic.

The last one i think its because the leg its closest to toothless so he could grab hiccup faster and recover faster so hiccup wouldn't burn as much

The video said in the 'Not So Extinct After All' section that nightfuries were the fastest and can fly the farthest but Grimole said, when he and the warlords were trying to find out where toothless and Hiccup were going, that Night Furies can't fly long distances.

as for the theory about night furies not being native to berk, i think it might tie in with the theory about drago hunting the night furies to near extinction. If he hunted them within the arcepelago and a certain extent just outside of it, they would most likely move away from the arcepelago and find new places to live. They could very well have just been scared away from the area accessible to hiccup, and they may one day migrate back when they realize its safe. When toothless leads the dragons to the hidden world, he could also be leading them to a place where the night furies have been living. To extend this theory, toothless may not be considered and alpha by the other night furies. If all night furies have his abilities and to the same extent, its possible that he could just be ordinary, and that a stronger, bigger night fury with even more advanced abilities is considered alpha. Then, you have to ask, would the two challenge each other? And would toothless have any chance of winning?

Here's my theory. Drago is one of the warlords and he used to be part of the group of warlords seen in the third movie and I say this for two reasons. One, when Grimmel is first introduced, he tells the warlords "a year since Drago's defeat and no further along with your dragon army". The phrasing of that sentence really makes it sound like the dragon army was theirs, not specifically Drago's and that he was probably one of them if he was helping to build their army. Second, in the second movie when Drago attacks Valka's sactuary, he fires explosive projectiles at the ice fortress, and to do that you need gunpowder. Gunpowder was invented by China in the 9th century, aka, Viking times. But it wasn't used by Europeans until the 13th century and the Viking age ended in the 11th century. So how could Drago have had gunpowder to fire his projectiles? Well, one of the warlords in the third movie is Chinese and if Drago was one of the warlords, that would've given him access to the gunpowder. I also like this theory because if it's true, then Hiccup and the riders slowly work their way up the ranks of dragon hunters throughout the series. First they hit low level hunters, Alvin and Dagur. Then when Dagur escapes in Race to the Edge, he leads them to Ryker and Viggo's group of hunters. We know from Krogan's frequent involvement with Viggo's dragon auctions that Viggo was probably a top supplier of dragons that Krogan would get for Drago's army. So, for most of Race to the Edge, the riders are now dealing with the supplier. By the end of the show, they're fighting Krogan, a lieutenant. Then in the second movie, they've worked they're way to Drago, one of the warlords seeking to build this enormous dragon army to take over the world. Then in the third movie, they come across Grimmel who is one of the greatest dragon hunters in the world, and he ends up leading them to the warlords at the very top of the chain. So it's cool to think that when they first encounter Viggo's hunters in Race to the Edge, the riders are at the bottom end of this chain, this organization, that leads directly to these people striving for world domination. Having pretty much all the villains being connected to the same group in some way makes the shows and movies feel even more connected, because now the whole franchise has one overarching antagonistic threat that the riders slowly begin to discover more and more of. Also, you can notice that the types of ships Drago has in the second movie are the exact same model as the ones Viggo uses in Race to the Edge, so again, it feels even more intertwined and connected because we can see that these are the same hunters. The war didn't end with the season 6 finale. The war, and the story of Race to the Edge, ends with the second movie, which acts kind of like a second series finale

Okay the last theory is partially true I think when hiccup was falling toothless grabbed onto his leg to save him and accidently bit it off.

In the second movie when hiccup is explaining to his mother all the ways Berk has changed to convert from dragon hunters to friends, he mentions that they do dentist work for dragons. This is an event in the riders of Berk series as Gobber searched for new uses for his skills in the new life style. Therefore the riders of Berk show did take place in canon, not a dream.
