The first two notes are supposed to be an octave up though! I've tried to emulate that myself before and even with those notes an octave up, I never quite nail the sound exactly. This is what makes Depeche Mode so great. They do just enough tweaking on their sounds that most of us can't quite figure out the tricks they used, even when we're seasoned musicians and synth sound designers.

I like the early stuff, but it was also a practical choice as I was working on drum sounds from that period in my studio. I do have "World in my eyes" included here, as a bonus, but if you don't saw the video through to the end, you missed it. ;-)

@@Lamster66 really good synth. Spent many hours making patches. The 1000 was a bit restricted with no velocity or aftertouch, but it was built down to a price.

@@random007nadir They were meant to be an attempt at a Digital Synth technology to take on the DX series FM synthesis. Phase Distortion is actually quite Clever really for the time. Yes, it was Cheap and plasticy mainly beause thats how casio made keyboards in general . At the time very few keyboards had velocity or aftertouch Certainly Roland weren't at that point with the Juno 106 JX3 and Korg with the Poly800 and the DW6000 and 8000. The DX7 was but the DX9 wasn't. so it wasn't so much a price constraint as such, rather a function that few others had even thought of doing. Funny enough My AX73 is Velocity sensitive which is pretty rare for an analogue synth. I think Yamaha's hit to the Synth market, left the competition reeling. They hadn't seen it coming and when it did they took quite a while to work out what had just hit them! .I think at the time Casio underestimated how good the FM technology was from Yamaha. and thought a Digital rival would take sales away from Yamaha? It didn't and was branded a Fail but there again so was the JX3 JX8 Dw6000 DW8000 and we know how the prices of those are going now? TBH comparing the CZ now to other stuff of the day its a pretty unique and very usable piece of kit! I should do more with my CZ3000

Yeah. I feel like they hire a bunch of “professionals” to do everything for them and they just show up to do as they say. I think they burned themselves out after SOFAD. Losing Alan is like taking the main ingredient out of a recipe…. It’s not the same dish anymore.

Five of eleven intros in this video are from the time before Alan Wilder. Even though he is extremely talented and surely had huge impact to the sound of Depeche Mode, there were several songs with great intros after his time.

and most of them composed by Martin Gore :))) I am really sick of this ignorance regarding Martin's work, without him we wouldn't have heard of Depeche Mode beside Speak & Spell... Beside the mood he set for DM that was the first reason we all got in love he did also a lot of the synth lines coming directly from the demos, a lot of those are in this video ;) Regarding his latest work, yes true, but it is impossible to be genius 40 years in the row...

Thanks! Making "chords" by using monophonic synths and lines in the early days is very effective and transparent. Very clever. It's also interesting that they often, at least post VC, their synth solo lines often came in (ended) one semitone under what they started. Very unusual in chart pop. ;-)

Back in the day we couldn't afford an Emax or a Fairlight, but now we have the technology so when you are by yourself you wanna re-create those songs cause you have the gear and the tech. I'm still decoding the keyboard parts of Rio and Seven and the Ragged Tiger.

It's the same harmonic language as most film composers over the last half a century. Look at the chord progression of say, "Enjoy the Silence", then look at a Tonnetz diagram. ;-)
