I very much miss the actual paper catalogue. I would typically hold onto them for 2-3 years to use as references. It’s true that the online version can be more dynamic...but for me just can’t take the place of a hard copy.

Ikea probably designs its furniture for standard European houses... Because here in Europe the furniture fits fine!... But our houses are 1/3rd to 1/5th the size of US houses.

Being from Denmark we tend to know what designer furniture that's been copied. Growing up with the classics from Arne Jacobsen, Hans Wegner, Montana elements, Borge Mogensen etc. makes it so that no matter how much they're copied I'd still buy the originals any day. They're super classy :-)

Upsizing accessories is a great tip for me! One of my fondest memories from childhood are my mom's ceramic figures and other beautiful objects dispayed in shelves. I find I am a magpie myself, and too many small objects creates a cluttered feel that's been bugging me. Sometimes you feel what's off, but can't see it -- now I see it!
@tommoncrieff1154

Her main issue with IKEA seems to be that everything is too small. I think this is US versus European city living - flats in Europe are usually small without great ceiling height unless they are in old buildings. This is IKEA’s market, they are size appropriate. In Europe if you want giant furniture, you go upmarket or search antique outlets and flea markets. Her solution is to buy 2 or 3 or 10 of everything, but most IKEA shoppers are very limited on budget which is why they’re shopping there in the first place. My own IKEA tip is paint. I paint many things I bring into my home so that I have the right colour values.

Buy 2 of these and 4 of these. I laughed so hard. Why not just buy the right size furniture at a different store? Would probably be cheaper that way.

Yes I agree. Only 15% of Americans live in apartments, and (other than in NYC and Miami) apartments here are mostly for the young adult crowd (18-25). IKEA in the US is very popular for young adults.

You've definitely got better flea markets and thrift stores across the pond where everything is older! My place in Vancouver (currently vying for least affordable housing on the world stage) is one of the few where I can get an IKEA piece home and it looks *bigger* than it did in the store.

I live in a tiny home. So I am intrigued with Ikeas ability to produce products that help me live comfortably as well as keeping the clutter at bay. 😀 It seems you are focusing on much larger homes. I choose to live in a smaller space with less stuff freeing up my time to pursue other interests. simply.

That was my impression, too. I could never take shelves out of the billy bookcase becasue I use them for actual books and I have a lot of them. In fact, they don't even hold all my books and I've gotten rid of a lot of them. And, my kallax cubes are perfect for my records and cd's (I'm just sorry that they stopped making the boxes for those cd's). Then again, I don't think anyone comes to my house expecting a designer home.

I used ikea curtains to cover a built in bookcase in a bedroom. It’s a whole wall so the floor to ceiling curtains cover the clutter and create a design wall. I love my 4 billy bookcases. The most affordable bookcases with glass doors to protect our books. They are on two walls of our dinning room and we get lots of positive comments

Totally agree with the lighting tip. When I remodeled my kitchen and built a home theater, I added many mini spot lights that accented where a there was major appliances and I knew I was going to feature artwork. When it was all done, that was the most dramatic effect. And that wasn't expensive, but I did have to fish a lot of wiring into the ceiling. But that was my favorite thing that brought the whole space way up.

I’ve been shopping at IKEA (sometimes with my designer friend) for years. I like the clean, simple lines that look high end if used properly.I use the Merete curtain in floor to ceiling length. I bought a large wool rug about 20 years ago that still looks great and is larger than what they sell these days and a similar tug at design store costs almost $1000! .

Absolutely, IKEA has drawn ‘inspiration’ that is a little too close to iconic pieces. Let’s take the more recent, Virgil Abloh’s MARKERAD collaboration with IKEA vs Paul McCobb’s Planner Group chair.. Or the “Meltorp’ dining chair vs Norman Foster’s 20-06 stacking chair.. Or the iconic ‘Poang’ chair vs Alvar Aalto’s 406 lounge chair. Pick your battles, I suppose. Excellent suggestion to color block shelving against the same colored wall, and removing a shelf. Certainly gives more of a gallery vibe to your treasures, whereas the uniform shelves can resemble the rows of knickknacks at a resale shop. Slay on, momma!

not filling every inch is so important. I'm a graphic designer and when I work with certain restaurants they want to fill their menus or advertisements with so much info and they always want to overcrowd the design. I keep reminding them that you need negative (empty) space so your eyes know where to focus and then flow through the artwork otherwise it's just a hodgepodge mess that you ignore and won't be effective. Homes are the same way, too much stuff looks like clutter and doesn't look good.
@garypuckettmuse
@garypuckettmuse 3 года назад
Good point and makes me wonder - why oh why are menus the ULTIMATE offender? The restaurant may not be overly dressed, the front sign may be very tasteful . . .and then they fling that two foot high twelve pages of dense writing in front of you and it all turns out to be eggs, chicken or hamburgers, haha. Stay in your business. It needs you.

That tip on removing shelves is brilliant - also putting black shelves on a black wall.

@@HouseofValentina I'm just gonna jump ahead and ask for a part 3 as well! :D I learn things from your videos that I don't see or hear from anywhere or anyone else. Maybe it's my own limitation, maybe not. I don't really care, lol. The pieces of advice you give are helpful, insightful, and it really feels like it comes from your wealth of experience. Thank you!

LOVE Ikea and love your tips. Yes to Tips, Part II and thanks in advance. Here's a tip -- when you buy a cloth item (pillow or slip covers, kitchen towels, napkins) from Ikea, Target, Home Goods, etc., check for errant threads and clip them. Loose threads peeking through seams - not good.

I really like the remove a shelf and decorate idea. I think I will use that when staging our home for sale by putting in artwork and artwork lighting into the center larger space. Great Idea! Yes, I would like to see part 2!
