I "only" speak 3 languages but disagree about children who speak a language natively being less fluent. I would trade 1000 words of vocabulary for being able to speak like a native 12 year old any day. It's not always about quantity, but being able to use what you already know at the appropriate times and children are often experts at that.

I guess when I was referring to a young child, I had in mind more like a 4 year old child. I suppose I was thinking about my own son, who often has a hard time speaking certain ideas because he just doesn't know the words for certain things. Although, you're right that he is an expert at using as much of what he knows to try to communicate, still there are times where he has tantrums because of the lack of words to communicate things like his feelings which he just can't even identify and express in words. This ends up in frustration for everyone. A 12 year old would probably know around 10,000 words already, and yes, I agree with you is fluent already.

Hi Matthew, I recently discovered your channel and I am gaining so much value already. I speak English as my second language and I am trying to learn Dutch. It’s very expensive to have a tutor and I was of the impression that I could actually learn the language without any tutor. You have proven it doable! The tips you’ve shared on your channel so far are coming in handy for me as I do not work in a formal setup where I would interact with Dutch native speakers on a regular basis. So, I’m doing it at home as a full time mom. Hopefully I will come back to this comment in the near future with proof that your methods indeed worked for me and I have learned at least one 1000 words in Dutch 😊. Thank you for your realistic tips! Please keep them coming.

Thank you for sharing your story. I also have kids and have been learning languages even with kids. You can even practice with your kids by watching cartoons in the language or speaking to them, if they are learning it too. I look forward to your updates.

I am a keen linguaphile and I've learned many languages over the years. I fully agree with absolutely everything you said. I have tried so many different methods and I have figured out what works for me but everyone has to find their OWN method. One big change I made a few years ago that transformed my learning for the better was to stop being so harsh on myself. I used to spend ages learning vocabulary and never considered it learnt until I knew it actively. If I only recognised it passively I didn't let myself believe I knew it. There are two disadvantages with this. First, that it takes so long. If you're pushing for active memorisation your vocabulary will grow at less than half the speed of learning for passive recognition. So I switched and stopped pushing myself so much only memorising words I felt were essential. This allowed me to build up more quickly a big enough vocabulary to use authentic materials early on and immerse myself. I was taken aback at how quickly passive words became active just due to frequent exposure. And of course your vocab will be more useful because by definition the words you hear the most are the ones used the most. Also I took on board that forgetting words is an essential process of learning and stopped feeling frustrated about it. Your brain actually needs to learn and then forget several times before it nestles in your brain so don't worry about it.

All of those methods are great, but only Anki addresses the problem of rare words. Frequent words stick in your head well because you see them used a lot, but what to do with rare words? And I personally don't like Anki because it's very boring to do it, and boredom prevents the brain from memorizing the words well.
@barrysteven5964
@barrysteven5964 20 дней назад
Personally, I would ask yourself to what extent 'rare' words are useful. Do you wish to actively use these rare words? Is that likely on a practical level? Or do you just wish to recognise them if you saw them or heard them? And how often is it likely you would come across them? So I would personally not worry about them. If you keep coming across them in real texts you read they will eventually stick. If you only ever see them on an Anki card is learning them a productive use of time?
@MatthewAlberto
@MatthewAlberto 18 дней назад
You might also try to increase the time on your input where you're likely to encounter those rare words you want to learn. That's another option without having to use Anki.
@thisismycoolnickname
@thisismycoolnickname 18 дней назад
@@barrysteven5964 Because if I have a goal to master the language, I'm supposed to know at least 5k words. Increasing input is not very realistic because it would require many years of doing so to actually reach that level, and I can't afford spending so much time on it.
@thisismycoolnickname
@thisismycoolnickname 18 дней назад
I do have my methods where i can learn, say, 2k rare words in about 2 months, not through input. And then input can help a lot of those words stick in your head a bit better.

"Empalagoso" in spanish means "so sweet that it's disgusting" it applies to food, but you can apply it for other things, the main difference is that it means "sappy". For example "Esas peliculas me empalagan" could refer to overly romantic and sentimental movies. Just wanted to correct that, the rest of the video is great!
@MatthewAlberto
@MatthewAlberto 18 дней назад
Thanks for clarifying. Really appreciate it. So empalagar can mean to disgust but in a sappy way, right? I'm not sure if we have a 1-word verb in English that is exactly the same as empalagar in that sense. I like finding differences in languages where there are words in some languages but no direct equivalent in the other.

If you know these words, your English is excellent!
