Well, I have a bunch of air plants and they were looking a bit sad. On watering day I happened to notice a container of fresh rain water outside...brought it in and put the air plants in it....Wow! It was like they went to a spa! Will do that again... It’s always glad to hear from you
You should get a Chlorophytum Green Orange! I keep recommending them to pet owners cause it seems like not many people know they even exist. They're non-toxic and so pretty yet so easy to take care of :)
@@lilianaevans6376 i just looked up an image on that plant and you're right- its so pretty!😁 is this plant a 'high' light plant tho? I have a feeling it wouldn't do well in low/lower light?🤔
@@sanik1939 Brighter light helps them grow faster but they do well in places with lower light, too ☺️ I have 2 of these in my house, one is standing near the north-facing window. The second one lives in the corner of my bedroom, far away from a small south-facing window. Both seem to be almost equally happy, the only difference is that the plant in my bedroom is a bit smaller.
@@lilianaevans6376 aww, thank you so much for responding back! I really appreciate the lighting examples you gave from your experience as well ☺. That helps! I just added this plant to my wishlist now 😄
String of hearts may be pet friendly, but pets aren't friendly to it. My cat doesn't chew on any of my plants but thinks the ends of the vines are cat toys 🤦
I love that you always add how long it took you to grow your plants to a certain point! I just recently bought a string of hearts and was a bit disheartened, pun not intended, to find that it was rather small and barely strings down its pot. Seeing that yours grew so much in so little time is giving me hope!
So ironic that you do this video, I just had a major scare in my house when 2 of my zebra finches decided my peperomia plant looked like salad! Thank goodness the plant is non toxic to animals. I am now however much more careful of what plants are in my room that I let the birds out to exercise in. Love your videos. Thanks for more ideas of what I can use in that room. ❤
something that i think is worth mentioning is that you don't necessarily have to say goodbye to toxic plants if you have pets! i have two cats and many plants that are considered toxic or even straight up poisonous to cats, and that's because my babies aren't the type to eat things they shouldn't be eating nor are they climbers or jumpers, so there's not a concern for them consuming the foliage or hopping up somewhere to reach at a plant they aren't supposed to reach. i placed out some non toxic plants on the floor in areas they typically spend most of their time in and then watched how they reacted to them. they sniffed at them like cats usually do and then immediately lost interest. make sure to keep the plants there for a couple of nights so you can examine the foliage for little nicks and scrapes from kitty teeth. if you have missing leaves or considerable leaf damage on the plant then it's best to stay away from toxic plant babies. if there's minimal damage or none at all, then it's probably safe to keep a toxic plant but out of reach just to start. my cat honey bee enjoys chewing a leaf of some of the plants i bring home but i'm not worried because she would need to actually consume parts of the plant to be affected by it, and even then the worst that would happen with her habits is an upset tummy or a runny poop. i've had toxic plants around my home for a few months now and both my fur and plant babies are happy and healthy!
I don't have an orbifolia, but I have fallen in love with calatheas as a cat-friendly home.. I'd be in trouble if I lived in a more arid climate, but I currently have four varieties that are doing beautifully and would happily bring in more. My largest is a calathea medallion in an 8 inch pot, and it's stunning. Definitely the best substitute I've found for those larger floor plants.
I just bought my string of hearts. It does not exist in any garden centers here and I don't live anywhere near any specialized nurseries or plant shops, so I ordered it online through amazon and I am so relieved that it came in in wonderful condition. The packaging was amazing and while it was quite expensive for tiny two inch pot I am gonna make sure she pays off. I'll definitely be propagating her and eventually selling/giving away some rooted cuttings locally so that way more people in my area will have them.
Yes, I have been waiting for someone to make a video like this!! Thank you so much for these amazing suggestions. I know you mentioned it’s hard to come by pet-safe large plants, but I wondered if you might know of any at all? I’m so envious of everyone who gets to keep giant monstera or bird of paradise, but my kitty is such a leaf-nibbler!
Yes!! Thank you, I have two cats and I do my best to keep them from eating my plants but they're little devils so I'm always looking non-toxic plants. 😇💚
Little devils. I came home after being gone less than 36 hours and they threw litter all over the floor and toppled over my biggish monstera, string of dolphins, and a bunch of propagations. My house is a mess, but dang it they’re cute.
“Vegan antlers “ made me giggle. Loved this! I’m not in my element when it comes to indoor gardening but I want to master it! I just moved to an urban area with my fur babies so this gave me the direction I needed !
Hi Nick. I’m new to plant hoarding lol but I’m soooo addicted. I’ve been binge watching RU-vid videos and I found you and I’m so glad I did. You are quite the intellectual and I’m fascinated by the way you spit out the actual names of these plants. I have a few plant cutting that I’m unsure of what they are and I just NEED to know. Can I send them to you? TIA
Thank you Nick, mystery solved. I now now my dischidia ovata is not a peperomia as labelled when I got it from IKEA 2 years ago. My stick insects got out and gobbled up quite a few chunks from the older leaves. Neither plant nor escapee insect suffered any ill effects. Currently both are enjoying bright morning light from a north east facing window. Love your content and depth of knowledge.
Nick, your videos always brighten my day! This video was a great one as my cat is plant-curious. Thanks so much for your knowledge and insight. Jo Massey(New Zealand) Our country has very little variety of house plants, so I slightly whimper when you hold up a dischidia and say they're so easy to find.
Good on you for making a video and informing people what they can own with pets. I'm very careful of knowing about the plants that enter my home after my dog died from ingesting a mysterious weed. It's a weird mulberry sapling looking-plant that grew in our garden. My mom thought it looked nice and brought it in. I asked a bunch of people on Reddit what it was because I can't find anything when I did my desk research. They berated me for calling it a weed, told me all plants need love and won't answer my question. My dog got to it soon after. Our region was in full lockdown due to COVID-19 so she died by the time we were able to bring her to the vet. I still don't know what that plant was but my mom threw it away out of grief afterwards and I left Reddit because I was so pissed at the people there. Lesson learned, know what plants you're bringing into your home, and if you know someone who has a question about a plant that you know the answer to, just answer it. I don't want another pet dying from snowflake plant parents.
Hi Nick! You picked some beautiful plants to showcase! The only ones I have are Hoyas and Staghorn Ferns that you showed. I do want to try some of the other ones you've shown. I haven't had really good luck with African violets. Are the Asian Violets easier to grow? They're so pretty! Years ago I tried Tillandsia several times and obviously did not care for them properly. I think I'll try them again. I love the look of the Tillandsia tectorum! Thank you so much for sharing! As always, it's great seeing you again!
Good to know. I have 5 cats, 3 of whom love chowing down on greenery. I've had to come up with some pretty creative ways to display my plants while making them inaccessible to the kittehs, sacrificing aesthetics for safety. I shall definitely try and purchase some of these. Thanks!
I feel you. I have two young kitties and but also a plant fervor. My girl can’t resist plants. There are bite marks everywhere. My poor money tree. I’ve been growing my own wheat grass for them and she loves it. Once I move to a larger space I can create better harmony between the plants and my loving kiddos
NICK hi great videos, I'm a bit sceptical about the body odour one! Would you consider a video about putting houseplants outside in the Summer? I'm concerned about doing this because I don't want insects in my home when I bring them back in : )
@@erikabeca852 i also know people whos cats have bitten hoyas and had awful reactions. even betsy begonia did a video on it so you cant trust the list 100%
I have quite a few toxic plants but out of the way of my cats. Only one out of 4 of my cats likes to chew plants but she likes grass like plants so I bought some cat grass and she loves it! I highly reccomend getting some if you have cats because it's her new favourite thing and its deterd her off all my other plants. I have non toxic plants on the floor I never put anything within the cats reach that might harm them it's just the safest way to do things.
Just bought a peperomia and the taco test is so useful as I don't think I can test the soil with my finger without damaging some leaves. Please make a video on other plants where the taco test comes into play.
Thank you, Nick. Thus video is informative. I killed a beautiful Jade plant in 1978 - overwatering! No one told me about Succulents! I WILL use all of this information! Ps, I subscribed. wink, wink.
I'm so glad I was able to so easily train my cat not to eat my plants!! She doesn't even have interest in new plants I bring in, thank goodness. I have a diffenbachia on the floor pretty close to one of her favorite spots so!!
I just got a dischidia ovata and a peperomia milano (which is basically a napoli nights but with teenier leaves) and they are both soooooo gorgeous! I love peperomias and plump succulent leaves!
@@bernadettelopez7225 yes, mine is in soil. I keep all my dischidias and hoyas in very chunky mix, which is mostly orchid bark, perlite, leca and like 30% cactus soil. It is pretty dry, so it's important that when you water, you water thoroughly.
I recently went to Pepper’s Greenhouse on your recommendation from another video. And it was the best!!! I love your videos! Thank you for all the great info! 💚🌿
Great Video! First time commenting. Sorry this is off topic but, I'm dying for the plant on the trellis in back of you! What is the name? If not you answering this, could someone please tell me what it is?
What potting mix do you use for your Dischidia Ovata? Some say they don’t grow well in soil. I just bought mine and it is in soil. I’m not sure if I should repot it in an orchid mix.
My visiting cat i have staying with me for awhile found a plant being water propagated. Kitty likes that water more than water from ta fortunately we've had loads of rain so in the morning ill fill her bowl with rain water.
I acquired a quite large birds nest fern and I don't want to mount it because of the size. Do you think it will work in a hanging basket or would it be better as a floor plant?
I really need your help! I have a plant I'm trying to revive so bad. It looks like ivy but the leaves are much smaller and they have tiny tiny needles on the edge. Could you maybe guess what it is? Do you need more details? It liked the average indirect sun and watering like ivy.
One of my birds got into a P. Selloum a few years ago. He chewed quite a lot of it before I caught him. 100% my fault and I have to live with the fact that I killed my little Asa. I usually don't let any plants near my birds, but I have the C. Woodii hanging near them and the damned thing keeps vining toward their cage. I just chop it because I can't find any definitive proof that it won't hurt Boo and Ami. As for the cat, she doesn't chew any of them or play with them, but she does like to rub against the cacti, especially those with the two inch spines. It gives me fits. She doesn't hurt herself, but it takes time off my life.
