I for some time thought the pentatonic scale was a lazy guitarist’s way to sound good, or at least not sound bad. Then, I started transcribing other instrumentalist’s solos (sax, trumpet, piano) and began to realize all soloists use pentatonics in all kinds of creative ways. I then fully embraced “pentacism”.

Couldn't agree more, it's kind of the backbone of Western music. The Pentatonic is always present lurking underneath regardless of scale.

Now that I think about it, we delved into cultural Asian music back when I studied music in school. Most of them used pentatonic or septatonic scale systems. It’s really eye opening now how the pentatonic scale is so influential not just in western music but throughout the world
@abcrx32j
@abcrx32j 2 года назад
Pentatonics are only boring/lazy when the harmony is stationary or if it let's you use the same one during the whole solo and you play it up and down or with the same cliché licks

I had this EXACT same revelation, only it was when transcribing vocals.

the three note per string pattern really helps in seeing the pentatonic not just as 5 individual boxes and knowing how to move between them, but it helps tremendously in breaking out of the "box thinking". will definitely use that more in my playing. thank you so much for these insights Rotem!

Rotem, love these ideas,---thank you. I've been working on something I'd like to share,---playing the form alternating between the lower and higher notes of the 2-notes-per-string version of the pentatonic, but only playing one note per string. For example, the ascending version of the Am in the 5th fret would be, A-E-G-D-E-C; the decend A-G-C-A-D-C. I sweep pick both forms, and of course use all 5 positions of the scale. Hope everyone can make use of this idea...

Thank you so much Rotem... i play acoustic guitar, for a bit over 30 years now, but I really didn't push into growth until a few years ago. I play on our worship team at our church so I have been very encouraged to learn more about music and such. I don't know much about scales or lead but I love finding new ways to play the chords which has lead me to finding some beautiful jazzy type voicings. I want to explore scales and triads and such as part of those voices and I think I'm going to sign up for your Patreon. It may be a month or so before I do, gotta clear my table so I can concentrate but thank you for this great lesson. I look forward to learning more! As for mistakes, I love that you left that in the video. It's so encouraging to see people deal with mistakes in such a positive manner, so I'll share my recent mistake lol Sunday morning service, we were doing a song that we have done several times before. But, we changed the key several times trying to get it in a similar key to the other songs we were playing for a good continuous sound. Well, cue the mistake lol I made several note changes to my notes but didn't make the final one. The song started out with a good solid acoustic guitar progression to set the pace and rhythm of the song and I full on sold it.... in the wrong key lol the team looked at me odd, scrambled around a few seconds and I had to call it... into the mic I go lol "sorry guys, wrong key :D" sometimes you just gotta own it, laugh it off, and make the correction lol live audience AND live stream *head in hands* lol

An interesting clip to check out here on YT is Bobby Darin performing Bridge Over Trouble Water live in the 70s just a few months before his untimely death. Darin was able to play several instruments but this performance featured him playing a harmonica solo over the bridge while the back up singers sang the part. Darin accidentally picks up the wrong harp and tries to make it work but then just shrugs his shoulders walks back over to the piano and grabs the right one and continues on without missing a beat. He of course knew that he would pass away as a young person, and for him there didn't seem to be such a thing as a mistake. Pretty awesome. Thanks for all your videos and Happy New Year Cheers

LOL - I disrespected and judged all Blues players for using and overusing the pentatonic... *until I heard Plini...* his brilliant phrasing to intersperse Pentatonic lines into his extended chord progression blows my mind. I realized, it's not a failing of other musicians, nor the scale itself (being simple) it's how it's being used or misused that offends me most.

9:39 you could say it's a mistake or you could say it's jazz 😅 For real though, pentatonic is best when you mix in all the extra notes to make things more interesting. Switching between major/minor 3rds, flat 5ths etc. Also enjoy trying to connect shapes 3 notes per string as well as just the standard box shapes.
