Bernth, I’m reviewing your patreon options and I would like to join. Additionally, is it possible to hire you as a consultant? I’m not looking to take a lot of time from you, I just would like to get a few sessions of consultation on setting up my home studio, nothing major, but I keep having minor issues with recording levels from guitar input, pedals, interface, kemper to Daw, for example. Thanks for all your great teaching content, it’s gold! 🤘Technik😎
31 years of playing now! (And not ons za Grampspaz guitars guys! ) It's amazing! I've never altered my pick grip before tonight. And I've always had open hand for palm muting. So I tried your grip. Did a few drills with the new grip and holy shit All of the sudden I started landing simple runs at 125bpm 130bpm. I'm impressed man! Thanks! What I would have given fire RU-vid when I was a kid learning guitar. Back then it was, 'wait for the monthly issue of Guitar World magazine, buy books from local music stores, and trade info with friends. Crazy change compared to now.
Duuuuuude.... after 21 years of learning the guitar, finally, you are the one who is able to teach me! Your lessons are nothing but awesome and I'm making more progress with them in the last few months than I have made in the last 10 years without them. I applaud you and thank you from the bottom of my heart!
I taught myself how to play in high school and have been playing for about 15 years now. I got far with no real strong technical foundation or lessons, but I've always been capped by speed. I just assumed I didn't have it in me to shred. I stumbled upon the BERNTH's picking technique video and had an AH-HA moment. I had weak technique and I was holding the pick wrong! I feel like I finally have a path to playing stuff I've always wanted to play, and I'm now taking building a technical foundation seriously. I probably thought that was boring before, but what you gain from it is so worth it. Playing with consistency, confidence, and without strain makes playing so much more enjoyable. I'm taking it slow, but things are finally making sense.
I was at my local guitar shop, testing out a pedal, when the shop owner was mindblown by the technik tips I picked up from this video. We talked and he ended up giving me the keys to his shop! Thanks to this video, no doubt! Watch till the end, you might end up with a free guitar shop...
switching to .007s and .008s made me focus on having a lighter touch. That made a world of difference in my playing. I think a scalloped fretboard also forces you to have a light touch as well.
Snapping motion tip about string transition is very helpful for me. (Ending with an up stroke on the lower string and then having to play a down stroke on the higher string.) That kind of string transition has been the most difficult thing for me for many years. Thanks to your advice, now I know what to focus on when practicing. I'll Pick up my guitar and practice right now. Thank you BERNTH.🤟
One of the most difficult things in my guitar routine, is actually building an effective one. It would be awesome if you could share tips on how to create an effective routine (I know you already shared content about how frequently to practice exercises, but still I'm struggling with building a programme).
Hey Bernth, you are awesome, both as a guitar player and a teacher. I learn sooo much from your videos. Am glad that after decades of playing and hitting the wall there is someone who can finally break things down clearly and provide the analysis and tradeoffs that can help other be better guitarists. Very grateful!
I've only very recently found your channel and I have to say it is awesome. I come from a pop/rock background and I want to get into shredding and this video is great. Everything you need to know in one video. Even if I don't succeed in shredding I feel that a lot of these techniques will help my guitar playing in general. Thanks for the great content.
Thank you, Bernth! Your videos show me, how degenerated my technique has become. I´ve started 25+ years ago and was quite fast. As the years went by, I became absolutely sloppy and "fake". Now, I start again with the basics! Especially playing with the metronome, keeping a steady alternate picking and most important: having a good left hand grip and therefore putting the guitar way higher on the belt. Looks way more uncool, but feels amazingly more natural! THX, Bernth!!!👍
This is epic man, u always have the most easy to digest lessons of some of the most important techniques. Keep up the videos man! Been playing 13 years and I’ve seen a lot of progression in my playing since I discovered ur channel 🤘
that small lick you played at 8:01 sounds like the last part of horizons by thedooo. and also this is an awesome video Tip 3 being especially useful as i also always ran into that problem
Great Lesson as always. At some point you should do and the 'How to Mix Major and Minor Scales for Impro'. It will be really interesting. Bernth, do you know that Adam Jones from Tool posted a short clip of your Dopamine video to his insta story with a comment 'This guy!'? You should pay a tribute to him with a riff or lick lesson. Cheers mate.
Great tips! And more exercises to work into my daily routine. I can't thank you enough! One other consideration for using a 'light' touch with the fretting hand is the notes are less likely to go sharp. I really suffered from 'gorilla gripping' my guitar neck for a long time (and still struggle with it), and I always wondered why I sounded so 'out of tune'. Most guitars suffer from being a little sharp with the first few frets, and pressing hard on the strings *really* bends it sharp. A light touch Technik is SO important!
Thank you Bernth! Thank you so much! Thank you for these little details lesson. It helps a lot! Thank you. I can imagine myself shredding with happy tears in the future. Lol
The closed hand technique makes a big difference even just trying it for 10 minutes! Do you find that you still use open hand at all or do you use closed hand more for fast speeds? I can really see how closed hand can be helpful in speed runs but maybe not as much in just mid tempo riffing?
i've been trying to work on relaxing my fretting hand when playing, i already play with a relaxed picking hand but whenever theres a fast part , my fretting hand tenses up so much , that's one thing i want to improve as soon as possible
It's so true that this video is a life changer, THANKYOU SO MUCH FOR THIS SIR!.... I just discover that my guitar picking hand is wrong now it is better for me to play when my hand is close...I'm struggling finding the right channel to improve my skills then i find yours.
Hi, At the start for muting string noise you said "after picking notes on one string we should pick notes on second string in a way that it touches the first", I get that. But after that you've playing without touching them and you also said to use thick part of our finger for fast plays, I mean can you clarify that...
Hey Bernth, firstly I'm very thankful for your comprehensive videos which helped to extremely improve my technique. Now I have a question, I normally play with a closed hand while picking, but as soon as it gets to hybrid picking I have my hand like half open half closed, because either closing or opening it fully wouldn't be economic, do you have any advice regarding hand position during hybrid picking?
great vid with all that info and sometimes merch why havent you mad a jazz 3 pick with the b logo on it yet , like the one in your profile pic. Just a sugestion I would buy em
Trick #6 is giving me a bit of a hard time. I use Jazz IIIs as well, but that angle is causing a lot of inconsistency in volume and I find myself having a hard time with how “bouncy” the movement feels from the strings. I’m sure it’s an issue with experience, but any advice would be appreciated~! 😅
I always play with my fingers open and I feel like I get the best results that way. I learned early on that I play much better when I use a hybrid picking technique. What would you suggest I do if I feel uncomfortable with closing my hand? I also always sit the guitar on my left leg (kinda in between my legs) when I play and am wondering if that is the proper position I should be holding it as a right handed player. I always have the neck raised pretty high too as it seems like the only comfortable way for me to play.
It's been almost 10 years I've been playing guitar, I'm not sure if i should or CAN change my right hand technique... I'm used to holding the pick with three fingers :/
sometimes i wonder if my fingers actually work like other humans, how do you get your thumb behind your hand while being able to put any pressure on the string, have any kind of control and not touch about 3 other strings at the same time? fingers just dont bend like that, atleast mine dont.
@@Bernthguitar No worries! I'm committed to the journey 🤘 Your videos are a great help btw, they're the first place I look when I feel like improving any aspect of my playing
I click SUBSCRIBE yeah ! Now I m unsubscribed... :( thank you Bernth... Well i guess i ll have another chance to click subscribe in your next video :p More seriously thank for your dedication and time to give us these classes, we are fortunate to have you.
something ill never understand is how you people can get your thumb to not stick out. i have long asf fingers and whatever i do it always sticks out like a sore thumb
you've got to be ignorant to put him in the same category as Gilbert. malmsteen I get it, he is a very binary player that does that one thing (harmonic minor) very well, better than anybody but still binary. meanwhile Gilbert is a fuckin wizard and always has been. you can totally disagree with me, but this is one of those things where if you know you know
@@kevinbazarek - “if you know, you know.” Right. And I disagree. Bernth’s videos are very much in line with what Gilbert teaches in his videos. I’m saying Bernth is getting to be on the same techinical level - and a review of his picking technique confirms what I’m saying. I’ve played for a long time and done over 3,000 shows, hired and fired Berklee grads.... i know talent. Bernth is next level.
Just started learning to play. I’m 62 and I’ve always wanted to learn how to play. The biggest challenge for me is fingering the fret board. I just can’t seem to angle my fingers right, especially when I’m practicing the spider crawl. Going to practice some of these techniques and hope it’ll help me or maybe I’m just too old 😊
I don't know if anyone has suggested this to you, but boading balls helped my fretting. You can also do exercises with one where you hold it in your palm and touch every finger to it when you're watching tv or whatever. Making sure your wrist is relatively straight instead of cocked toward yourself is also important.
If you sit while you practice (and you’re right handed) hold your guitar on your left leg, not the right one. It will bring your left hand to a much more comfortable place as you try to keep your left thumb as close to the center of the neck as possible (on top of the skunk stripe if you play a strat), not over the top of the neck.
