DC have so many good materials to work with, arguably even more than marvel. The execution of the DCEU movies are just too terrible. The first avengers movie had a mediocre story at best but it was still well received. Because of the whole build up. The execution was perfect unlike justice league movie which just felt rushed and all over the place.
+Kilthan2050 That is one badly mangled version of the story you have there. It was supposed to be Moore playing with the Charlton characters originally, sure, but it's pretty fucking weird that you think that anything DC ever offered to Moore involved him "essentially killing of a majority of the DCU". That's not how the business works, kid.
@@MegaZeta "but DC was unhappy with the idea of him essentially killing of a majority of the DCU" "pretty fucking weird that you think that anything DC ever offered to Moore involved him "essentially killing of a majority of the DCU".". Seems like you should have read that comment again before you posted yours.
Nick Turncoat I think he's been underutilized in that show though. Anytime shit gets real, they find a way to conveniently take him out of commission just so Supergirl can save the world on her own.
@@MegaZeta Never say never my dude. I never expected Amazo, the Doom Patrol, Black Lightning, or the Nuclear Family to ever make a live action appearance.
Not superheroes, but DC's biggest potential payday would be Sandman/The Endless. HBO, who has the same owner as DC, should have been developing this as a replacement for GoT when that ends.
I wonder if Fox has any hold on Vertigo stuff because of Lucifer? They haven't included any of the Sandman characters in the TV series, but it's still a Vertigo show.
Emerje I don't think so. "Constantine" has been on NBC and CW, "I Zombie" is on CW and "Preacher" is on AMC. It looks like deals are made separately for each title. I wonder what DC is going to put on their streaming service with "Teen Titans" and "Young Justice." Maybe the previous seasons of all their TV series.
Hoping the webseries, City of Demons, does well enough that they consider it. Same for Vixen. The reason there's no love for Constantine from the execs at DC: they don't sell enough Constantine toys ;)
I want his tv show to come back. In the one season we got, there was a character that seemed to be momentarily possessed by Deadman (possibly), the appearance of Jim Corrigan and a premonition of him becoming the Spectre, and Dr. Fate's helmet ("Put that down before it puts you down.")
I don't know how they'd do it, but I think that if they were able to develop multiple characters in movies like Marvel did with Guardians they could adapt with some slight alterations the series where Booster Gold and several iterations of the Beetle saved Ted Kord from dying. That way you can have Jaime AND Ted, and you could have Booster in a supporting role, which is where I think he really shines.
The Creeper, the original version... fantastic, apparently lost & forgotten Also, as mentioned by others... Dr. Fate Zatanna (if handled properly) Kudos for... The Spectre Deadman
anyone else remember how Static Shock was the most popular DC cartoon, and had huge hype for the comic, then did all in their power to ruin it and make sure no one remembers it? pretty weird.
adeadfreelancer I believe it may be down to the character rights being split between DC and the original publication Static was created by (who I can’t recall the name of right now). I used to watch his cartoon as a kid. He’s a fun character - very much like DC’s answer to Spider-Man. Sucks that he’s getting no love and is stuck in comic-limbo, for whatever the reason may be.
Naw Lang7 DC already owned Milestone comics by then. In fact Soul Power exists because DC wouldn't let them use Black Lightning as a mentor for Static because DC didn't want to pay royalties for his use to Tony Isabella.
adeadfreelancer pretty sure that show got topped by Batman TAS, Batman Beyond, Superman TAS, Justice league and Justice league unlimited, but Static Shock was pretty alright for what it was, despite the dated nature of the show.
DC doesn't and has never owned Milestone. Static is still the property of Milestone. Also can we stop trying to force Black Lightning as his mentor. Static is inspired by Spider-Man that's why he doesn't have a mentor.
The Question is SO underrated. One of the best characters of JLU, a show that did nearly every character SO right. Also, he's the main inspiration for Rorschach. Nuff said.
Master Oshawott Better known than most of the people on this list, I’ll give you that, but still not well known by any means. It’s a shame because they’re all fantastic characters, with more depth and potential than some names here - certainly more than the likes of Etrigan or the Spectre.
Lang7 another thing I really want movies for the characters u named But i think it would be extremely hard to make a good solo martian Manhunter film and plastic man film But firestorm would without a doubt be as good as Wonder Woman
John Constantine has made a live-action appearance, hence why he doesn't make this list. He's a more famous than most people on this list and anyone who knows him knows how much of an interesting character he is. The question is very different, almost nobody knows him and his comics aresn't nearly as successful and Constantine, he hasn't even made a live action appearance yet. Super underrated.
Literally the only way to respect the John Constantine character is to retire it forever so that DC can't drag it through the pile of shit it's going through right now
I expected you to say the Atom. I would have love to see a movie based on the run in Adventure Comics just before Flashpoint. Atom as a Scientist investigating weird science based mysteries using his abilities to stay alive. Think a cross between Antman, Reed Richard and CSI.
_Doom Patrol_ was probably DC's only chance to turn their shit around at the movies, demonstrate exactly what their brand brings to the table that's fun and weird and fresh... and they made it into a TV show. Waa waa
Dr Fate. Can’t believe he wasn’t in this list. It was refreshing to see Shazam do so well. I know this video was posted long before that movie came out. But, still. Anyway....yeah...Dr Fate is definitely one I’d have put on this list. He’s different enough from Dr Strange, that I believe he could do well. He’s got everything it takes.
He's in the Legends of Tomorrow tv show and it was handled well from what I've seen of it. I agree he could be cool to seen a big screen version though.
He used to be in the Flash and Legends of Tomorrow, but now that both Ronnie and Martin have died the character is basically done for. Especially now that Jefferson is stable on his own without a Fission-partner
I feel like some honorable mentions would be Ice, Fire, Red Tornado, Huntress, Power Girl, and maybe some other characters from the Legion of Justice would be cool to adapt. My favorite is Red Tornado
have been willing... the reason the MCU was built on the back of Ironman and Thor and Not Wolverine and Spidey (arguably the best analogs to Bats and Supey) was because they didn't have the film rights... Now that they have Spidey Back... and Disney has access to the X men with the Fox Purchase how long do you think that will last...
Tim Janssen Come on now. Especially when they have Top Tier heroes as Hulk, Captain Marvel, Thor and Captain America used they still gaving others less tier ex: Falcon, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist their own to shine.
Tim Janssen There even bringing in Cloak and Dagger and possibly Blade and even went on record stating they had plenty of material for the next 20 years after Infinity War wayyyy before the marvel/fox deal came into talks. Marvel gives A or D tier characters shine with or without thier money makers characters.
Yes, they had these plans in the pipe 'Before' the Fox Deal... Projects far enough along will be completed, but will they keep pushing 'the D-List' now that they have all of their A Listers... but also note how Agents of Shield has only given us token interaction (Lady Sif and an Obvious 2nd unit scene with Fury)... the Inhumans was 'demoted' to a 8 episode series, which did not appear to be connected to anything... the Netflix shows are alleged to be in the same Universe as all of this yet we've seen Nothing except one liners (the incident, Magic Hammers and Green Monsters) showing they crossover with anything but each other (FFS the Punisher's scenes of the the NYC Skyline somehow lack the MCU's Stark Tower)
Oh, so like the weirdest most inaccessible B- and C-list characters. Good luck, because _Suicide Squad_ was too shitty to make that seem like a good idea to Time Warner
There is a Swamp Thing movie and a sequel but I have no idea if it resembles the comic book version or not. And there was a TV show - but it didn't last long.
Considering how well Black Panther was received by audiences, another black character like Static would be very successful Not to mention he’s just a badass lol
DC just do each character for Justice League Dark in solo movies then lead up to a Justice League Dark team up movie not skip it and then just jump into the team up movie without character build-up if they did Constantine, Dead Man, Etrigan The Demon and then Zatana movies then lead up to a Justice League Dark movie it would make them millions just saying
The entire idea of "Justice League Dark" is DC taking a bunch of interesting characters, stripping away everything interesting about them, slapping the "Justice League" logo on them and trotting them out like street-walking whores to spend their last days blowing fans in the gutter
You don’t necessarily have to go to either extreme. They could do a couple of solo movies, and maybe a few groupings would work (some of the characters have interesting backstories with each other), and then maybe a fill out JLD. But you could also stick with the smaller group and solo focus.
True, but only Constantine and Zatana would get good ratings I believe. Etrigan might, but Dead Man... there isn't much the ghost can do. I see Dead Man as more of a supporting character than main protagonist.
DC needs to stop their group up shit. What they need to do is introduce interesting characters in movies that are meant to be good movies that tell a good story and, even if they lead nowhere, they are still their own good movies. They need to stop thinking "compete with Marvel" and think "I just want to make a great movie and tell a good story." If they later have a story to tell that includes team ups, that's fine. But they need to put the story before BOTH the character and future movies. If you don't have a good story to tell, a character, even an amazing one, is gonna drown.
The Phantom Stranger. His is a sad existence, as well as being a sympathetic chracter. You showed him in the Etrican segment. He would fit in well in a supernatural setting.
Jezareth Guzman Actually Neil Gaiman has confirmed that a sandman (I think show) is in development. He said himself the reason it took so long is he kept shutting down really awful sandman adaptations, but they finally trusted him with his own work after good omens
I want a Mr. Miracle movie to introduce the New Gods & Apokalips/Darkseid. Kind like Thor did for Asgard only Mr. Miracle isn't a godlike character. So glad you included him!
You included Deadman, but the Deadman wouldn't be complete without the Phantom Stranger. One of the most interesting and probably the most enigmatic of all.
If DC reboots it's movie universe it would be cool to see The Shadow as one of their first movies and we find out later The Shadow is a film the exist within the DC Universe the people watch, not unlike how Kill Bill is a moive people watch in the Tarantino universe. It is this film the a young Bruce Wayne grows up loving and inspires him to become a hero after his parents death. We see an early Batman not unlike in his first debut in the comics in a similar costume and using the same guns. During this Batman film we see Bruce's relationship with guns as something he finds a neccessary evil and navigating his his own truma around them and his feeling using them. The climax of the film is Batman killing Joe Chill and with Batman getting a major PTSD panic attack flashing back to his parent's death, with this anxiety he throws his weapons and spirals into a deep depression trying to reconcile how he is no better than Joe and that his revenge is not what Gotham needs. Gotham needs a hero, but a gun weilding man hung up on revenge is no hero.
There is a Black Canary with powers in Arrow, she just comes later. They basically split the comics character into 3 for the show, producing Laurel, Sara and now Dinah who is the newest one with the actual supernatural cry.
Shazam is being made and the set shots of the costume look awful. It looks like you stuffed Jay Leno into a stretched nylon Capt. Marvel costume. The lightning bolt emblem is sewn on the costume crooked and it's crinkled at the tip. It's an insult to blind sweat shops everywhere. The 70's live action TV series looks better than this dud. Hell, the black and white Capt. Marvel serial films look better than this. There may not ever be another DC film after this turkey.
Aiden Bailey+ Intelligent reply. Do you have a point to make or is name calling as far as your IQ goes? Get back to me when you can talk in some other language than trash. People like you are what causes all this toxicity in the comments.
James Ooten lets not knock it till it comes out. We all thought ant man would be crap but he now one of my fav in mcu (ik this is dc but this example explains my point best) if the acting and character development is good i can excuse a costume misjudgment. Smallville was great but dont tell me the costumes were out of this world.
SuperWildWarrior + I loved Smallville for the exact reason you stated - great character development and good acting. Plus the development was built up over time, letting us get to know and love the characters. You can't say that they didn't rush and hastily put together the whole JL franchise trying to catch up with the MCU's 18 or 19 movies over 12 years. With the underwhelming response to JL, you think they would slow down and take their time with their next project. I'll use your example: the MCU movie costumes look pretty much spot on in real life as they do in the movies, with little if any CGI needed (Iron Man excluded). Also the actors had to go on a strict diet/training regimine for 6 months prior to shooting their first MCU film. By contract, they've also had to maintain being in shape in case Marvel decides to add a last minute cameo or end credits teaser scene. My original complaint was only with the costume and the actor not being in shape. He has nearly my body build, 6'0" and 250 lbs. He pretty much looks like Fat Marvel or Uncle Marvel (actual DC characters, not made up). If you put that guy up against The Rock as Black Adam, the crowd's gonna be rooting for Black Adam. I mean, The Rock's always in his best shape. With Captain Marvel/Shazam, they're going to have to spend a ton of the budget to CGI the costume to look better, erase this guy's belly fat, and CGI the entire chest/abdomen area to look muscular/superheroish. If they're already cutting corners with rushing the movie before the actor has time to get in shape and have made a sub-par costume for the title character, then I'd guess that character development and a stellar script isn't on the list either. That is, unless Capt. Marvel/Shazam is going to be a comedy. DC writes so much better comic stories than Marvel. I just hate to see them short change their cinematic universe for the sake of competition. They started in the game too late. If this was basketball, it'd be like the opposing team showed up to the game in the middle of the 3rd quarter. They can't compete with Marvel at this point, so why not just slow down and take the time to make a great movie?
There are a few I’d like to see. 1: the Sandman. 2 : the original Blue Beetle not that new child one. 3 : Dr. Midnight. 4 : The Wildcat. 5 : Adam Strange.
Peter Hedkvist people would be more aware of him than iron man since he's in the justice league cartoon show and a regular on CW Supergirl which has quite high viewing figures
Ropsana Khanom Agreed! I meant more in a sense like: if i ask my mom of she knows iron man or MM, she’s more likely to have heard about iron man (pre2008)
I have no problem with Shaq returning. He did the best with the material he was given. But the Story and the Script was so bad that no one could have saved Steel. Not to mention the costume look dumb. I think Steel could be a fun movie. But the one we got was a disaster with almost no redeeming features.
My son loved the Steel movie. Shaq was a decent role model outside of acting and sports. We wore out 3 VCR tapes re-watching it. The budget and effects weren't up to the task, but the story was good. If you can't believe in the person portraying the character, then scripts and budget and special effects mean nothing. Take Henry Cavill, he just cannot act. Not in any movie he's ever been in, yet he gets to be Superman.
Ian Marshall I feel like it would be hard for him to carry his own movie. A character like that would need to have a movie that is 6 hours to set him up and tell a good story about him.
I feel like Stargirl could be a great moneymaker for DC if done right. She’s got a cool set of flashy powers that would look great on the big screen, plus she’s a pretty relatable character. If they went into depth on the whole “ordinary teen thrust into the superhero life” storyline, a standalone Stargirl movie could function as a really great coming of age story.
How about Jericho or his sister Ravager? They both are pretty interesting and awesome all on their own and being the kids of Deathstroke is sure to bring in some big name characters too
The New 52 Vibe storyline was honestly one of my favorites, bringing him to the big screen would be absolutely amazing and would fit in with the darkseid thing they're trying to do. Also, bring in the extended batfamily or even Batman Beyond, they would do amazing in theatres. Dr. Fate would be pretty cool to tool around with as well as Zatanna or Vixen (especially if they wanted a sort of black panther character money powerhouse).
Raging Roadhog oof hope you know it’s blasphemy to mess with anything Watchmen related since the graphic novel is perfection and doesn’t need character stand alones for character development.
Very true, sick of them living off of the Bat train and, as much as I want Superman to be made great again (no Trump reference invented) as he's the one who inspired the superhero genre in entertainment altogether, DC needs to Expand their superhero universe in order to evolve and adapt to be enjoyable.
Oh goodie! Another insecure alt-right dude that thinks sjw's and women are the downfall of society. They always have something entertaining & informative to add that has nothing to do with the conversation.
Shazam would be so good as a main character just imagine how much he would have to juggle in life it would be amazing to see him be a normal boy and a hero while still being himself
Is an Austin Power..reference. but so is your comment loot but is the wrong quote. Is "why make Trillions when you can make,... Billions," than scotty says "because trillions is more than billions, idiot."
Which is about what JL brought in after all the cookie counters got finished paying this and that. WB/DC just need to take a step back and realize they got in the game too late to compete with Marvel. 15 movies and 7 TV series all interwoven and overlapping, carefully planned out over 12 years. Then DC thinks they can create the same buzz and effect in just 2 movies, BvS and JL. They even crapped on the CW's DC Universe fans by saying that those shows weren't what DC was striving for in the movies and just weren't on the same scale as the movie. Ha! You could re-run the Flash origin arc on the big screen and pull in more fans and money than what JL made. No. They need to start from scratch and create their own comics opera, distinctly unique and apart from everything that's already been done. They need to pull away from this pissing contest of JL vs. Avengers, because they lost that battle before they ever entered it. They need to pick something obscure and offbeat and make it golden. Doom Patrol or the Teen Titans (they call us weapons, we call them tools would be such a counter-culture back at'cha to what Marvel is doing with their established heroes). Doing the Legion of Super-Heroes would put them in the 30th Century and would lessen this Marvel vs. DC bs. Or how about this, go completely away from super-heroes? Do a series of movies with a shared universe of Challengers of the Unknown, Secret Six, Checkmate, the Blackhawks, and the Sea Devils. Each movie could have an underlying plot thread that ties them into some world ending crisis. You have normal people in costumes/uniforms going up against something that only super-heroes do. Crisis drama, and plenty of time for characterization since you don't have to burn up movie time explaining powers.
