Mental models are frameworks and structures that help us understand the world. They shape how we think and how we make decisions.
Today we're focusing on 10 mental models that help us: 1) simplify complexities, and 2) reveal counterintuitive insights.
Here are the 10 mental models:
▪️ Simplify complexities
1/ 80 20 rule
2/ Theory of constraints
3/ First principles
4/ Occam's razor
5/ Hock principle
▪️ Reveal counterintuitive insights
6/ Interest-based counting
7/ Via negativa
8/ Inversion
9/ Relativity
10/ Velocity vs speed

My favorite is via negativa, so interesting, kind of like minimalism which I'm trying to practice with my material belongs but it's so true subtraction in the mind can help us see a different perspective. Loved this video, can't wait for part 2!

That IS a great model! Good tool to start implementing. I also found "Occam's Razor" / Einstein's levels of cognitive prowess intriguing!

Hi Vicky, I found most of your examples either hypothetical, of references in fields that the outsiders wouldn't easily imagine or circulating around your professional work. It'd be more practically helpful if you can try explaining each of these models with at least one of your real-daily life experiences. I usually find sharing personal experiences of applying a theory in daily life as one of the most effective ways of explaining, and that explanation is usually simple (not simplified), easy to understand and apply for others who listen to that explanation.

Thanks for the vlog on this. A few that I use all the time that I didn't see mentioned: 1. SIPOC - use this to model most business systems. Very important for Theory of constraints. 2. People, Process & Tools - use this model to examine systems again. Is the problem where you think it is? 3. Time, Cost, Quality, Scope - trade offs, and important for understanding when "agile" vs "waterfall" is appropriate. 4. Understand the cost of rework and complexity (this ties into a discussion about leverage). 5. Read the book "Drawing on the right side of the brain" You cover some of its points, but if you can take the models here and apply to problem solving, I think you'll be surprised by the results. There are a heap more, but these should be useful in a professional context.

Wow. Wow. Never thought of the differentiation between speed and velocity. Like I said: EXCELLENT content. And well explained. Thanks for this, Vicky. You had me stopping, rewinding, and taking notes. That's the mark of a content-rich video.

You are contemplating a serious idea---a proposition. The first thing an idealized thinker does is create the opposite of that proposition. Given thesis, think anti-thesis----given anti-thesis, think thesis. Next you are gathering or thinking of evidence for and against each position. Lastly, your decision is based upon which position has the most disaffirming evidence---the truth being the opposite of that position. Calling this ampliative truth.

Questions to ask about the ten models. 'Which one or two models do you already know about and use or see others use? Which one or two models do think are the least relevant or the most difficult to understand? Which one or two models do you think you would like to remember and incorporate into your life?'

I like the Interest-based counting and Relativity Mental models. Because whenever I get stucked in an argument with my friends or family members, I always ask myself: What is their interest? What they want to achieve? And in reverse, I also ask myself the same question, What is my interest? By doing so, It helps me to show if I'm being biased or I'm just misunderstanding these people or the situation. The Relativity mental Model kinda help me to be empathetic or not be judgemental with other people. If someone criticized me with out knowing the whole story, it kinda demonstrate the Relativity framework: Because that person is judging me my system where he's not part of in the first place. So he kinda never relate to what I've been going through. This works vice versa so it kinda help me to pause and know where this person coming from before I make any judgement. Great mental Models tips by the way❤️ Occam Razor and First Priciple thinking helps me in descion making and Problem solving. 80/ 20 rule helps me with my productivity ❤️

The last model hooked me. Physics was my 2nd favorite subject after Mathematics. I remember the difference between speed (a scalar quantity meaning it has magnitude but no direction) and velocity (a vector quantity with both magnitude & direction). I need to dig more on how to apply this to my life. I have a few experiences that illustrate no 10). For example, as a marketer in a bank some years ago, I needed access to an organization. To meet the staff etc. But I just couldn't get in. Fast forward to years later after leaving the bank. My sport, volleyball that I do just because I love it, not for money or suits. And my writing skills got me in there! I was sure my banking position would do the trick. But it wasn't the key. Thanks a bunch Vicky!

Feedback: The frame is beautifully set with whole color plate. there is nature there is abstractness (picture) there is messy order not perfectly stacked books that doesn’t seek attention cuz if it’s clinicly presicely stack or layed out it’s Attention grabing. the same with your sitting position which is not right in front of the edge of your room. the whole setting is nice bright therefore i thought it would be interesting for you to wear something a little bit darker so you contrast the „background“ even more with your head that keeps the focus a little to much in the middle of the screen. the frame could be a lil wider cuz your hand movement (which you use nicely as a tool to lay focus and dynamics) are kinda cut of. Personally i really like the lack of editing cuz this way you keeps the flow going and i am not distracte. for the things like boos or videos you blend in would be nice if they have a commentspot on the screen with the same format and size. the way you speak is very pleasant, shows your own interest in the topic and is attention grabing like the pacing. experimenting with how loud you speak could be interesting to stir a bit in the flow of your spreech to make it even more colorfull. i am aware that this videos purpose lies in summariesing the models and not to explain it in depth. You say a few times for example but then u follow up with a type of situation not the actual example it self like you did in the system thinking one with the farm and animals etc. make the example as simple as possible cuz if you truly understand the core principle your talking about. Analogy is in my eyes the goat way to explain stuff and you can find them in every breath you take cuz they are every where and make it more relatable the „if u have a to do list...“ that’s on the to do list? 1 min set up a story and it’s relatable let’s the listener think. this is the second video (many more to come) that i watched and it’s over a year old so things might have changed and my feedback might be irrelevant to this point but please know that there are always ppl who appreciate the details (like the eye contact). this feedback serves as a mirror tainted with my own ideas. now i’m interested how you have grown in the last year. maybe you can take something from a random youtube comment on the internet with you. thx for reading!!! feedback for my feedback would be very nice cuz we always learn and strive and improve

This is great! A lot of these are tools I've developed on the job while consulting but being able to give them names and keep them in a 'toolbox' make them so much more accessible. Also, I'm not sure if you're ever going to talk about the "Blue Sky" strategy for identifying a new target markets but Cirque de Soleil was one of the case studies used to explain the strategy during my EMBA from Quantic.

@VickyZhaoBEEAMP You know what I realized about everything, in regards to learning? I realized that I don't NEED to know EVERYTHING when it comes to doing something --- like starting a business --- or solving a problem within the business.. What I mean is that there are SO MANY USELESS INFORMATION out there --- that LITERALLY has no connection to the very things that YOU MUST DO.. The best example I can give is this.. Say that you were a regular contractor.. and you were assigned a project.. a project that ONLY requires a HAMMER to fulfill the task.. THAT'S ALL YOU NEED!! Now, what do I mean by this??? All you gotta do is GRAB the HAMMER.. and START HAMMERING. Right? Just GRAB IT.. and just start SWINGIN.. You dont need to know what type of steel it is.. who manufactured the steel.. where the steel was sourced.. you dont need to know how the handle was designed.. who it was designed by.. you dont need to know the type of rubber.. YOU DONT NEED TO KNOW THESE USELESS INFORMATION!!! Yeah, it may be interesting to KNOW, but it has little to no EFFECTS to you FULFILLING the job.. So many people go to school and just learn all these CONCEPTS and IDEAS and THEORIES.. and of course these things sounds so good on paper.. but if tested and practiced and applied.. the RESULTS may be something that is completely different as to the findings that were initially established on paper.. So here it is.. There are 2 types of information that exists.. and here are some different ways to know them by.. CONCEPTUAL EDUCATION VS. TRAINING EDUCATION CONCEPTUAL KNOWLEDGE VS PRACTICAL KNOWLEDGE IDEAS, CONCEPTS, AND THEORIES VS. EMPIRICAL INFORMATION KNOWLEDGE VS WISDOM These all basically have the same UNDERLYING MEANING behind each words.. WISDOM is what BUILDS a house.. and the KNOWLEDGE is there to REFINE and REFURNISH the already established home.. WISDOM makes you STRONGER than a STRONG MAN.. And KNOWLEDGE is what makes you even STRONGER. There is FOUNDATIONAL KNOWLEDGE.. and there is the SUPPLEMENTAL KNOWLEDGE.. You cannot BUILD A BUILDING without having a FOUNDATION FIRST.. especially a very STRONG and LEVELED FOUNDATION.. Just think about that.. what if your FOUNDATIONAL KNOWLEDGE has cracks, and has many weaknesses?? If you try to BUILD A HOUSE on top of that FAULTY FOUNDATION.. then the INTEGRITY of the home will be GREATLY AFFECTED!!! If the FOUNDATION IS NOT LEVELED then the HOUSE will not be LEVELED.. If the FOUNDATION is weak then the HOUSE will be WEAK.. Only by FOCUSING ON WISDOM --- Which is the MATERIALS that are USED to BUILD and to ESTABLISH.. you can then ADD KNOWLEDGE to SHARPEN and REFINE the BUILDING MATERIALS and the BUILDING TECHNIQUES... WISDOM BUILDS.. KNOWLEDGE REFINES WHAT'S BUILT!!! WISDOM is PRACTICAL and TANGIBLE and CONCRETE.. and KNOWLEDGE is INTANGIBLE and IMMATERIAL, which are very much like IDEAS.. just nice IDEAS --- until it is SUPPLEMENTED on top of what is already ESTABLISHED --- the WISDOM... WISDOM is the HAMMER.. Just GRAB IT the HAMMER.. and just START HAMMERING..
