As a Disco 1 owner that hits the AZ rocks HARD and beats it up good, I have to say they're quite a capable vehicle offroad even old and stock. I just installed a 2" lift more so because it was sagging the 'Gansta Rover lean' to the right. Oddly new terriforma kit is still 20mm leaning to the right. Anyhow HATS off to you man! Super awesome build and LOTS of inspiration here! Quality work on a Rover!

Lol It sounds like we have similar taste. I can really relate to folks like you that aren't necessarily brand loyal but Instead appreciated something unique. These days I just see these projects by what parts they have not the brand that build the original chassis. I'm sure you would love to see all these parts on a 4 runner or land cruiser but I'm happy to see you can appreciate it even when it's on a land rover lol 🙌

Wish we were neighbors. I've had neighbor friends like you, and got the biggest amount of fab work and custom work done together. Without them, my inspiration is none. That's where I'm at now. XJ sitting on 31's with a 3" rough country cheapo lift. It's begging for 33's or 35's and a nice lift with all the goodies. No inspiration. No motivation. Too bad you don't do house visits like Stacey David did for awhile. Kind of like an emergency make over visit. LOL. Luv watching, hope some day I can go on the trips you and Trail Recon go on. Maybe get the whole fab youtube crew together for a trip? You, Trail Recon, Lite Brite, Fab Rats, Matt's offroad, Bleepin Jeep, etc. That would be epic. Hell, that would motivate me to finish the XJ!

Incredible, I watch your Disco videos over and over. I purchased a '97 Discovery 4 years ago for $3k CDN... Haven't done anything other than a few oil changes.. Although I’ve watched every video as they came out it wasn’t until this 10 minute retrospective that I realized how much TIG ( which you claim not to be good at) went into the build. That and the amazing number of fabrication specific tools you’ve amassed and mastered are a tribute to your “get it done” attitude. Years older, and years behind in fab skills, I aspire to build something like you do in my retirement years.

I hope you enjoy the video!!! Budget of course means different things to different people. All said and done this is about 25k worth of parts and material including the cost of the rover. For an off-road rig that is triple locked with 1 ton axles, a roof top tent, custom suspension, one of a kind bumpers, sliders, gull wing windows, a full air system, dual batteries and a full size fridge... this price is rock bottom. The capabilities of a 1 ton Land Rover on 37s is extremely high for the money you spend. For comparison my stock as a rock Toyota Tacoma cost me 43k and its still on 30" highway tires lol. That same Tacoma with all these specs would be a 70k dollar build easy. This Land Rover Discovery 2 took thousand of hours and lots of carful planning but I absolutely love the way it turned out. It still does 70 on the hwy and it floats over obstacles on the trail. If you want to learn more check out the series of videos I did on this Discovery. It is very detailed and you can see all that is involved in making this truly one of a kind Off-road monster!
@tysonj3910
@tysonj3910 2 года назад
Thanks for sharing the cost. I agree that you definitely got a lot of bang for your buck. I'm not sure how you don't get overwhelmed having so many rigs though. How do you even pick which one to drive let alone which one gets new parts!?

@@tysonj3910 lol it's a little overwelming but but I manage it fine. I ran the plumbing side of new construction for many projects over the years so I'm use to having many irons in the fire. Nate I am so impressed with your many talents. My son-in-law & I also each have a 2003 Land Rover Discovery SE7. We also love these vehicles & have taken them on numerous off road adventures in the last two years. However, one problem that continues to plague us is overheating. We live in the Phoenix area so we have excessive ambient air temp. in the summer of 105-115 degree for many months. We have both installed Ultra Gauges to monitor our coolant temp. During summer months our coolant temp. run about 195-203 at speeds of 40-45 mph. At stop lights or stop & go traffic we can hit 205-208 degrees. What is the max. temp. of the 4.6 V-8 engine in these vehicle before we can expect damage? Have you had any heating problems with your D2 or have you done anything to address overheating? Your 1,000 mile summer trip is absolutely amazing to us!

As we discussed, I have been working on Rovers for about 20 years and I have never seen anyone document a build as comprehensively as you have with this Discovery. It’s really hard to find this level of detail on a Rover project. You will help a lot of people who are interested in this very unique vehicle. By the way, what was the name of that additive you were putting in the vehicle to stop the “alleged” slipped cylinder sleeve problem (I may have the same problem…)?

Hey Nate, love the build. I think I've watched the entire build series, including the section about the whole air system. However, I was hoping you could provide some more detail on the rear air-bag setup. I have a long-arm WJ that I tow a small off-road camping trailer with. The WJ is setup soft and flexy, so even with the minimal tongue weight of my trailer it sags a bit more than I'd like with the trailer. A weight-distribution hitch isn't really an option with the Max Coupler. I'd like to just add air bags, but I don't want to have to limit my travel/articulation to do it. Any advice or suggestions? Thanks, TJ

I never saw the cook top/table on the door before. How did I miss that?! I've often thought of making my own stove that folded out. I've got a coleman, but I dislike how close together the burners are. I can barely put two decent sized pans on there (like when cooking eggs and bacon/hash browns). Now I'm thinking I'll get one of those old stoves, rip it apart and build my own. Just need a little more width that how they come from the store. BTW - you probably know this, but you can get a hose that has one end that matches the tread of the 1lb propane cylinders and the other end matches the threads to the 5lb cylinders (like for your grill). I dislike using those little ones due to the waste. And yes, I know you can refill them.
