0.999... is super tricky. Another piece of evidence for it is 4/9 is 0.4444, 7/9 is 0.77777, yet 9/9 is 1. That's how it works. Weird right? Not so weird if you think of it in terms of number systems. 9 is the last digit of base 10, so it causes what you're expressing to repeat, as it is always shy of that whole place value of 10. You know, long division, where if you can't divide it at least one time, you go to the next place value. This just repeats infinitely with n/9. In octal, 7 is the last digit. So 4/7 is 0.444... Makes you wonder if there's another way of expressing numbers that's better. First it was tally marks, then advanced tally marks (aka Babylonian numerals) then Roman numerals, and now Arabic numerals in decimal because of our ten fingers.

Einstein was horrible at finding work, after failing to get a fellowship with pretty much every physics professor in germany he basically gave up looking for work and only got the patent job through a friend. His father thought he was an utter disgrace for not making something of himself. He would still be unknown even after writing his special theory of relativity if a famous scientist (I can't remember who at the moment) read his work by mere luck and proclaimed to the scientific community how smart Einstein was. So remember, don't be mean to people who are out of work or working a sucky job, they could be the next einstein.

Mike D Generally, when this question comes up, people are asking about it in the real number system. In the real number system, there are no infinitesimals. This means that if the difference between two real numbers is smaller than any positive real number, then it is actually 0. This is a strange truth for many people, but it is actually the truth of the real number system.

Does anyone who reads this comment know how to pronounce Albert Einstein's name right? I think the most of you will not, because the right pronounciation is 'Albert Einshtein'. Why? Because he is German and when in the German language the 's' and the 't' are combined, the 's' is not pronounced like 's', but like 'sh'. Jeder Deutsche der das liest, kann sich ja mal in den Kommentaren melden. Funny fact: The name Einstein literally means in German 'Onestone'
@cyanmanta
@cyanmanta 10 лет назад
That's not a mispronunciation so much as it is a quirk of the English language, not unlike how, when confronted with a word beginning with an S followed by another consonant, Spanish-speakers involuntarily attach a short E sound to the beginning of the word. Or like how a Japanese person will involuntarily add the sound of U to the end of an English word that ends with the sound of a K. Because that sound is not present in the speaker's native tongue, it needs to be approximated.
@pifci

Actually 0.9999999999999999 is "smaller" than 1 The problem is the decimal system is flawed for showing fractions so we have no accurate way to write it. And the difference between the numbers is too small to bother with, the point of the matter is, mathmatically it's smaller, but the real misconception is with how people do math. I personally just cut the middle-man and round. so 2/3 or .6666666666 to me is just 0.667 Yay weird american mathmatics..? I'm not trying to be rude with this by the way, I just want to point out the misconception is with the students misunderstanding how fraction to decimal conversion works, *not* that the misconception is with peoples ability to read a decimal vs a whole number.

TrueWOPR you are right about that is is smaller than 1 ...when you do little more advanced math you see the reason clearer..there is something called the limit of a function..that is (simplified) what function is limited by or simply leaning to.. lim(0.999999...) with n number of 9 when n is leaning to infinity is 1..but 0.9999... is not 1..math is strict..you can not write same number using the same base (10 for decimal..2 for binary) in two different ways (even if you put ... as symbol for infinity of 9-s).. 0.9999... is infinitly smaller than 1 ..but not 1...as there is no number infinity, but there is representation of a number leaning towards it..and "limited by it"..this is not as simple as it looks, math is not a proximation without specifically (limit) saying so...give math more credit then that ;) respect it for what it is.. PS: Fancy93pants same thing applies..you can not make that calculation without specifying that it is a limit..( I learned that same trick in school when I was young, but it is not really right way to do it..I remember having it as a question when I was younger on my city's math competition, with some other questions like proving 1+2+3...+n=n*(n+1)/2 , where correct proof needed is not what they where asking, it really is proven with mathematical induction which I learned later in life..)..so they might teach you in school "incorrect" math proofs as they do with many other classes..but for simplfication purposes only ofc..

What John said for .9...=1 is not the real proof because what he said still leaves him to prove that .3...=1/3. The real proof: Let .9...=n x10. x10 9.9...=10n -n -n 9=9n divide both sides by 9 1=n and .9... also=n 1= .9... .9...=1
@lydiaw5832
@lydiaw5832 8 лет назад
I disagree with .999... = 1. when you do .333... + .333... + .333..., you get .999.... but when you subtract .999... from 1, you get a .000...1 difference the original calculation of .333... + .333... + .333... is missing that extra .000...1 (vi hart made a video on this that explains it better than I can because I wasn't trained in math or anything so)
@hector-m-carrillo
@hector-m-carrillo 8 лет назад
.000...1 is an invalid concept, because that implies infinity has an end let's do this in base 12 1/3=.4 base 10 1/3=.333... base 12 3*1/3=3*.4=1 base 10 3*1/3=3*.33333=1

"(vi hart made a video on this that explains it better than I can because I wasn't trained in math or anything so)" The video you are referring to is an April Fool's joke video. Notice the date it was uploaded and how she basically says "April Fools" at the end.

@MuffinsAPlenty
@MuffinsAPlenty 8 лет назад
Lydia W I know a few people who have had that interpretation of the ending of the video. However, there were several videos she put out after that one (mainly her videos on infinities), where she brings up 0.999... = 1 again, even though it's only tangentially related. Also, the arguments in her 0.999... not equal to 1 video are all flawed (for example when she says you need to put a "2" on both sides). If you pay attention to her tone, you can probably pick up that she thinks most of the things she's saying in the April Fool's video are ridiculous.

The .999 repeating is still being debated by mathematicians. Some say that .333 repeating is infinitesimally smaller than 1/3. I agree and say .999 repeating is infinitesimally smaller than one
@MuffinsAPlenty
@MuffinsAPlenty 10 лет назад
What mathematicians say that .333... is infinitesimally smaller than 1/3? 0.333... is exactly equal to 1/3 in the real number system. That is an indisputable fact. It has been proven. It is true. Done. If you want to go to another number system where repeating decimals are defined differently than they are in the real number system, then you could get a situation in which 0.333... is less than 1/3. But generally, that's not what we're referring to.
@XPimKossibleX
@XPimKossibleX 10 лет назад
MuffinsAPlenty actually .3333 is just what we use to say 1/3. In reality it is infinitesimally smaller. Look up vi hart's video about .999 repeating (the sosond one) \
@MuffinsAPlenty
@MuffinsAPlenty 10 лет назад
michael benzur Vi Hart's second video is an April Fool's joke. Listen to the last 5 seconds. Moreover, her second video is intentionally riddled with mathematical errors. Despite seeing proof, a lot of people refuse to believe that 0.999... = 1. Many of them even come up with "reasons" why the proofs don't work. Of course, the reasons are incorrect since the proofs _do_ work. Basically, Vi Hart's second video is pretty much poking fun of the arguments that people come up with to say that 0.999... isn't 1 by showcasing them in that video. Listen to the tone of her voice. You can tell that she is completely baffled by the "logic" in what she's saying.

No explanations as to the "no edge" thing made it to the front page, so I'll try my hand at it. It's generally accepted by physicists that everywhere in the universe looks pretty much the same. It all has matter in it. You can't just go beyond the matter. It also doesn't get to a point where space itself ends, because that would just be weird. There are a few reasons why this could be the case: First, the obvious one: the universe just goes on forever. You can go in a straight line in any direction and you'll just keep finding new universe. The universe could have zero average curvature in which case parallel lines work how they should, at least as long as they don't get too close to a black hole or something, or it could have negative average curvature in which case everything spreads out as you travel and it all looks like an Escher drawing. Specifically, this one: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circle_Limit_III Second, the universe may have positive curvature. It all curves into itself like the surface of the Earth, except that instead of being a surface embedded in a higher-dimensional geometry, it's just like that. Third, the universe loops around like a game of asteroids. If you keep going in one direction, you'll loop around and come back.

So for number 1 the quantity of virgins received by a Martyr (you are correct) comes from the Hadith. However not only are the Hadith trusted Muslim sources and the Source of both the Shahadah and the order to pray 5 times a day but the Qur'an constantly mentions that Martyrs will get Virgins in heaven (See Qur'an 44:51-54, 52:20, 55:54-56, 55:70-74, 56:22-24, 56:35-38, 78:31-34).

@zuha9541 6 лет назад
acenog123 Not all Ahadeeth (the plural of Hadith) are, well, 'created equal'. Ahadeeth were compiled into books a while after the prophet's death, so sourcing them was a real issue. You needed *impeccable* sources to make sure your Hadith was credible. (Also it needed to make sense, but this isn't really relevant here). So, naturally, different Ahadith are ascribed different levels of credibility. So, things like praying 5 times a day are indisputable, because they are very well sourced. 72 virgins, on the other hand, is.... Iffy, to say the least. What John says is right, the sourcing was terrible and the standards for this sourcing were very high. I don't think that Hadith even made it to a more credible book of Ahadith. .999..... =/= 1 y=1/x approaches 1 but never equals 1; it can equal .999... though.
@MuffinsAPlenty
@MuffinsAPlenty 9 лет назад
+Brent Kramer: For what value of x is y = 0.999...? Edit: Also, your example isn't quite right. You have y = 1/x. This function takes on the value of 1 at x = 1. Maybe you're referring to the fact that as x is allowed to get arbitrarily large, y tends toward 0. But this doesn't seem to be the point you're trying to make.
@sportsfreak33393
@sportsfreak33393 9 лет назад
Which discrete value of 0.999... are you looking for?(I did misspeak slightly here) irt the edit: Yes, I was paying more attention to it's limit to 0, I was groggy when I made the comment. y=-(1/x)+1 with a domain of 0 < X < ∞ would be a better example.
@MuffinsAPlenty
@MuffinsAPlenty 9 лет назад
Brent Kramer 0.999... has only one value. There is only one 0.999... For a function like y = -(1/x)+1, I claim that there is no value of x for which y = 0.999...
@sportsfreak33393
@sportsfreak33393 9 лет назад
If you approach it from a mathematical perspective and think there is only one value for 0.999... then x=infinity for the equation I corrected. If you approach it from a scientific/real world perspective then your approximation for 0.999 is limited by your precision and can be a real number.
@blacksnow7106
@blacksnow7106 9 лет назад
+Brent Kramer Let's say x = 0.9999999..... 100x = 99.999999........ 99x = 100x - x = 99.99999...... - 0.999999....... = 99 x = 99/99 = 1 you might argue that the number is missing 2 "last" number 9, but that's the thing, infinite has no "last" btw, look it up on wikipedia i think i saw the article some years ago

First of all: The thing about Washington's dentures reminded me of Key & Peele Secondly: Speaking of misconceptions, though Michael Jordan was cut from the varsity team as a sophomore, it wasn't that he wasn't good enough. It was because he wasn't considered tall enough. At 5'11", his coach didn't think he was tall enough to play varsity. Semi-related side note: Harvest Leroy Smith, who was 6'7", was the sophomore who made the varsity team. Smith had a career in Japan, the UK, France, Germany, and an American minor league...and Jordan would use Smith's middle and last name as an alias to check into hotels.

Rigorous proof: Two real numbers q and p are equal if for all positive epsilon |q-p|=epsilon However, by another theorem we know that between any two real numbers k and L there is another real number. So, if you can find AN epsilon such that the above works, then you can find an uncountabley infinite number of them between 0 and the original epsilon. Additionally, the set of all these numbers will contain the difference between 0.99... and 1. Epsilon is an supremum (least upper bound) of the interval of real numbers that contains all of the real numbers between 0 and epsilon (and excluding them) . We also know that if a set has two or more supremae, then we know the supremae are equal (another theorem). However, 0.99... is as close as possible to 1 without equally 1. thus, epsilon is also an infimum (greatest lower bound) to the same set. Thus, the supremum and infimnum are equal. This is not possible unless 1 and 0.99... equal each other. Therefore, the real numbers 0.99... and 1 must be equal. If you want to argue that there is a non-real number B that is infinitesimally close to 1 but not equal to 1, you don't have to; you just made it! It's just not a real number. It's probably not imaginary either since imaginary numbers are just linear multiplication of reals with i. Maybe it's a Hyper-real? Idk, that's starting to get into really abstract number theory, right there.

Actually, the Koran does imply that the righteous will get virgins in heaven, although it doesn't specify a number. I'm not Islamophobic, I'm cool with all religions and so far I haven't found anything in the Koran that can compare with the divinely-sanctioned genocide in the old tenement (1 Samuel 15:2-3. God commands Saul to kill every Amalekite - man, woman, child, and even their livestock. We Jews try to forget this. And then there's the ending of that poem 'By the rivers of Babylon', which describes how God will wipe out the Babylonians for their crimes. But I digress.) or the antisemitism in the new testament (The entire book of Matthew), but it's important not to counter myths with myths. The truth, as John likes to say, resists simplicity.

Actually, misconception number 9 has not one, but two misconceptions in it. Firstly, the notion of five senses predates Aristotle, it can be found in the sixth and fifth century BC Hindu and Buddhist scriptures as pañcannaṃ indriyānaṃ avakanti or under ayatana, where a six sense, the mind, is added. Secondly, Aristotle taught that there were four senses, with taste being a type of touch.

Aristotle is not wrong or almost wrong about everything. Sure, he made mistakes, many, if not all of them resulting from the limitations of his time, but Aristotle was, and still is, hugely influential. To modify a quote from Whitehead: "Philosophy is a footnote on Plato and Aristotle."

The real problem with the idea that "late in the winter of your 17th year you are 17" is the use of the word "of", which allows the noun preceding it to take possession it's antecedent. (i.e. A bottle of coke) so when you say "the winter of your 17th year" I'm inclined to think the winter has the person's 17th year in possession, making them a 17 year old in like, February.

So I know this was forever ago, but I thought I would put my favorite misconception. Some people believe that introverts don't like being around people. Now some might, but the difference between an introvert and an extrovert is how they perceive the world. One has a more sensitive amygdala. To really simplify that, it means they respond to stronger to stimulus. This may surprise some, but the introvert actually responds more strongly to stimulus.

I'm pretty sure the universe has an infinite mass & no boundaries out side of space... Space is the boundary and non boundary. Imaging the universe was a ballon... What would be outside of the ballon, space..... It's not the matter that defines the space it's the space that defines the matter.

Actually, no one really knows if there is a edge to the universe. Some physicist and astronomers believe that there is one. The Big Bang says that every thing rapidly grew, and if you can grow you can't be infinite.

How old you are in your 17th year depends on how you count years. There are many cultures where you are considered to be 1 when you are born. So if you're counting the way someone in the US or France is counting, you'd be 16. But if you're counting the way someone in South Korea is counting, you'd be 17.

In China, when you're born you're "one' because they denote age by what year you are in as opposed to the rest of us who denote age by how many full years have passed.... Now, if you want to consider conception as the beginning of life, you would technically be one year old about 12 weeks after your birth if you were a full term baby.

I'm sure this has been pointed out a bazillion times in the four years since you did this video, but what Al Gore did was promote the movement to *commercialize* the Internet. Guys I have a predicament. The predicament store is selling predicaments for half off, which in its self is a predicament because even though the predicaments are half off I have no money which is therefore the predicament. Another predicament about that situation is that I don't like predicaments, so if someone gifts me a predicament that will also be a predicament.

The way I understand the universe having no edge is that it is similar to the surface of a balloon. You can travel around the entire surface and yet never encounter an "edge" because the surface is continuously connected to all surrounding points. As for the expansion of the universe, if you inflate the balloon, expansion still occurs, but the lack of an edge remains constant.
