You’re referring to what some people call the “scale colour” effect. I’m not convinced that’s really a thing… I have plans to do a video to explore the idea.

You‘re absolutely right. The effect you are hinting at is called Aerial Perspective. Authentic RAL 7021 is perfect for repainting the Lamborghini in your garage, but it would be insane to paint a small scale model of an early-war German Panzer in that colour. Authentic RAL 7021 needs to be tinted prior to painting a scale model. How much you need to tint, depends on the scale of the model. The trouble with most hobby paints is that we cannot know if they are authentic RAL 7021 (like Revell No. 9 is), or if they are pre-tinted convenience versions of RAL 7021 that already account for aerial perspective. Revell 87 "Panzer Grey" may just be such a pre-tinted convenience product. However, the trouble with pre-tinted versions of RAL 7021 is that manufacturers do not let us know if they tinted their paint for 1:35 scale or 1:72 scale models. While it may be tempting to assume that Tamiya tints their paints with 1:35 scale in mind, being a 1:35 scale model manufacturer, we cannot be sure of that. www.miniatures.de/aerial-perspective.html

Color scale is not a thing.

You're right, there is no such thing as colour scale. The effect is known as Aerial Perspective.

I do have a book from the 90s about how real paints look too dark and toy like for scale models sizes. I’ll have to dig it out and read

Thanks James. Yes, AK has been fiddling with their colours. In some cases it’s been for the best (like their 8012 Rotbraun primer colour), in other cases not so much (like their Elfenbein interior colour, which is now too dark).

Let me know how the IJN greys work out. For a custom mix try black with just a little bit of Field Grey and Medium Blue.

I haven’t noticed a lot of lightening with AK Real Colors… their 7021 is a bit too light, but their 8000, 7027, and 7021 are all pretty close to real samples. Is scale colour a thing? Over very long distances colours become lighter, less saturated and shift towards blue due to moisture and dust particles in the atmosphere, but that only works over long distances… longer than would be the case at distances replicating scales we use in modelling.

Yeah... I know what you mean. We repainted our M151a2s when I was in Germany. Even though we used the official green, black, brown , and tan ( I don't remember the official names.) our squad looked different compared to the other squads in our Platoon. .. and each was different.. We could tell which section by the vehicle colors and pattern. Regulations were that the patterns were to be the same. Many years ago they tried to maintain that but everyone got lazy about folowing the regulation pattern. I remember my CO in a Mech company didn't care if we followed the Reg Pattern but wanted all vehicules to be painted close in color and pattern.

I’m sorry, H416 slipped through the cracks in my two testing videos, so I can’t say how accurate it is. Does your local store have any other brands?

@@brucethemodelnoob they have Vallejo Mecha, Tamiya (but no XF-63) and Mr Color (but I don't use lacquers).

@@miken8875 here’s a possibility… try Tamiya XF-1 Flat Black with a few drops of XF-65 Field Grey and a very very very tiny bit of XF-50 Field Blue.

@@brucethemodelnoob unfortunately, they're out of stock of all three of those. I do have Aqueous H32 Field Gray, Aqueous H12 Flat black, Aqueous H42 Blue Gray, and Tamiya XF-18 Intermediate Blue. I was wondering if I could incorporate a blue with any of those mixes or even H416, since Panzermeister36 used a 3 part mixture of XF-63, XF-18, and XF-1(? I think it was white) in his German Grey video.

Coming back to this to say that H416 looks very similar to H401... But I ended up covering it almost completely because of how I was painting my Tiger. Either way, I'll definitely use it for another panzer grey project.

Tamiya RLM Grey? It’s much too light, but you could use it to lighten a better matching (darker) paint if you needed a highlight colour for colour modulation. I use XF65 for that.

Of course it is. And, if you are a German soldiers tasked with cleaning your tank, the quickest (and now punishable) way of doing that is called "abdieseln" or dieseling down. Just add diesel or gasoline to the water/detergent mix in your bucket and use a hand broom to scrub the vehicle down with that. The tank will look perfect for inspection, but dieseling down is hell on the paint. Abdieseln may have been known by another name in World-War Two, but it was recommended practise then, escpecially for removing winter camouflage or multi-colour Tarnanstrich camouflage patterns done with dark yellow, olive green, and chocolate brown camo pastes over the vehicle base colour. Imagine what frequent Abdieseln will do to the authentic RAL 7021 Dunkelgrau paint job on your vehicle.

@@mark32092 Apart from the smell, the finish should be quite effective. Of course, the downside of the diesel-cleanser solution is that the vehicle collects a lot more dust than other vehicles which have been washed with just water and detergent.
