Two things I have found really helpful to stash on the bike somewhere: Alcohol wet wipes and a stuff sack backpack. I used to carry big alcohol wipes to clear bug guts from my visor in a pinch. A 10-pack is thin and fits in an inner pocket of a jacket or under a seat but can be a day-saver on a ride on backroads when you find a swarm of bugs at 60mph. I also kept a backpack under my seat for use in a pinch. Something like my Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Day pack. It packs down to about half the size of your fist but expands out to a 22L drybag. I've used it to pick up groceries after a ride, pack out trash I found on the road, or carry in a lunch and then stash the bag for the rest of the ride.

That ride out to the Old Sinclair here in Utah will definitely get your visor covered in bugs during the summer. I think it's the lake that attracts them all. And alcohol wipes would be a life saver!

I got myself a Helite H-Moov backpack. It has a lot of great features (integrated helmet net etc) and best of all, it’s an airbag! In it, I usually carry a freezer bag with a bit of water and a micro fibre cloth for the bugs on the visor.

The biggest "got to have it" motorcycle accessory for me comes from one of your previous videos. MOUNTAIN BIKES! I started mountain biking because of your channel and I'll always have a mountain bike now. My track riding and racing improved a lot because I became less afraid when the tires start to shimmy around, because it's ALWAYS happening on the MTB. I also saw huge gains in my cardio endurance and fitness so I dont get so exhausted from a 20 minute track session. Finally, I found ANOTHER discipline and hobby that I absolutely love.

Picking up a basic abba stand is worth it.. on a budget without the extra supports you can do the front end by weighting the rear seat with some bags of cement or something. Once the front wheel is out it will sit fine. With this stand you can do front and back with just one stand, and it supports at the suspension pivot and doesn't get in the way much so for any big jobs A handy tool to have. Having a small jumpstart kit is pretty handy if you can stowe it under a seat for those times when a battery is dead. Some come with a light built in which is handy for roadside crap at night. Also. Essential really.. if you dont have a center stand on your bike Always have a flat piece of something solid enough to take your bikes weight through the sidestand with a footprint like your hand or bigger. Because.. on anything less than solid tarmac or concrete your bike might not stay upright that long.

@@kramsc1 Inner sun visor helmets have lower safety ratings because you are sacraficing a lot of padding in the helmet where we are most likely to have an impact. Modular helmets also suffer from this. That notwithstanding, my personal experience with the inner sun visors, is the seam of the edge of the inner visor is always in my eye line creating distortion. So despite giving them tries on multiple occasions, they just don't work for me.

Regarding changing wheels at home, do you know of a single reference or online database with torque settings for all the relevant bits - pinch bolts, axle nuts etc, - across different manufacturers? What does a tire shop have available to refer to, for example?
@CanyonChasers
@CanyonChasers 5 месяцев назад
Most times torque is based on bolt size. Many shops when they are doing tire changes, they tighten things down by "feel" - The end result is as varied as you would expect. The good shops look it up and use a torque wrench.

going to mention again about wanting that video on how to pick tire pressure for canyon riding - air up on the way there, air down when you get there? Am I aiming for the tires to be at a happy temperature and using pressure for that, or aiming for a certain pressure window and temp is a byproduct of that and as long as you're in the window its ok? Should my tires be in a heat cycle while highway riding?
@CanyonChasers
@CanyonChasers 5 месяцев назад
I mean... It all depends. How far away is your canyon riding? An hour? Twenty minutes? I'm likely to set the pressure for the day, maybe a few psi lower for a canyon day vs a freeway day. The key point is to pay attention to your pressure. Ideal pressure, even at a track day, is nuanced and may range as much as 10% from one rider to another on the same bike on the same day.

@@CanyonChasers I'm just hazarding a guess, but I think when you're not hearing every single rattle, mechanical sound or little bit of air movement, your mind has less input that will cause a reaction. Even if we're good at staying calm and without undue tension, stopping the aural barrage really helps. Speaking of which, I'll need to try that sample pack. I've long used earbuds and got some custom ones recently, but the custom ones really started hurting on my trip across Australia, and I think the seal broke and let noise in anyway. The trauma caused tinnitus and an infection I've just gotten over. A friend lent me some decent quality foam plugs - the comfort and noise suppression was unparalleled. I love the idea of reusable ones like Pinlock and NoNoise plugs, but for me they just don't compare to good quality foam plugs (and my right ear is very weirdly shaped). Also, 90 degree valve stems for the tyres, especially as I have spoked rims. And not plastic ones; my mechanic informed me they're prone to leaking and hears constant complaints about them on track days. Get metal ones.
@CanyonChasers
@CanyonChasers 5 месяцев назад
I had some very expensive custom molded ones, but apparently, as your weight fluctuates so does the seal in your ear. I gave up and now just use the most quiet foam ones I can find.

@@CanyonChasers would it be because our ears are also responsible for giving us a sense of balance, since noise causes vibrations in our ears, our whole body would feel the vibrations, now if we were to cut off those vibrations, mainly caused by noise, our body would feel much more relaxed and would feel much stable.

@@thomasolson8417 I believe that if you hit a tree directly enough, and hard enough, to break the shell of the facebar, your neck will be broken. I also believe the shell material is constant between a full face and modular helmet from the same manufacturer. The full face's facebar is capped with compression foam, so it "looks" more substantial (I assume you are using the chinstrap and you will not hit against the inside of the facebar). I agree, I thought modulars looked goofy. I bought one, anyway. A month later, I vowed to never wear a full face, again. However, the only time I ride with the facebar up is when entering a gas station. When lifted, it looks like big lever to snap my neck, if I were to slide on the tarmac.
@thomasolson8417

@@bobirwin1028 good points. I don't feel I need a modular, but then, I haven't tried one. Maybe if I did, I would overlook the goofiness of it, as you have. 👍 As for sun protection, my Shoei is awesome in the sun or at night because it has a shield that goes super dark during the day and is clear at night. I wish that tech was more prevalent, and not just a couple of companies offering it, because internal shields add bulk, cost, and potential failure points because of more moving parts. This video doesn't even address it. 😭

What are you smoking man ? You need a $2,245 fancy "table" to change oil ? 🤣 Not to mention, you need a concrete floor, & at least a 100 psi air compressor ! It might make sense if you run a motorcycle shop or you're an "influencer" who gets offered free stuff all the time, but for the rest of us regular Joe motorcyclists - the floor it is (sometimes, just the driveway, or the street). Stop with this click-bait, ad-in-the-form-of-advice thing, reminds of why I unsubscribed in the first place !

Pledge wipes and a blue shop paper towel for cleaning bugs from the visor when it's dry. Rain-X for plastic and a blue shop paper towel for keeping the visor clear when it's wet

Not essential, but I always carry a good luck charm, usually a kitschy thing from a road stand stop. So far, all my crashes have been without one:) You probably can’t respond to all these comments, but wondering how you mounted to GPS the way you do. I have a 2017 Multistrada, and I’m mounting the exact GPS mount, and haven’t seen a way to do it the way you do, which I prefer. Can you let me know?

A little surprised that heated gear wasn’t mentioned. I keep mine with the rain gear so I’m never without it. Up high in the mountains it can be below freezing almost anytime. I use the Quad Lock for my V1. I’ve seen YT vids about dramatically extending headset range with Bluetooth enabled GMRS radios; although I’m not doing that yet. I’ve been a GPS junkie for years and love following my meticulously planned routes through the southeast with Garmin BaseCamp on my Zumo XT. It would be great to see how you plan your adventures. Your content is awesome! Thank you!

A small can of lemon pledge (the real stuff not no name), a few microfiber cloths in a ziplock bag, tire pressure gauge, a few zip ties and spare fuses were all items that stayed on my bike. On longer rides I might toss in a plug kit with a couple of spare CO2 cartridges and maybe a laminated map. If you get lost just take out the map and look confused, I've met some of the most interesting people that way.

I think I'd put my Held gloves on that list. They have the visor wipe on the left index finger and it has helped me when caught in the rain in stop and go traffic during my commute. I never need it when motoring along though, just turn my head for a second and the wind takes it all away, but when too slow to do that, that visor wiper is convenient

Your last point regarding tinted visors seems backwards to me. I prefer a clear visor with an inner sun visor. No need to carry anything extra (sun glasses) and if you wear prescription glasses, then it also makes more sense this way. Otherwise, love your videos and have found them very supportive to my riding skill development.
@CanyonChasers
@CanyonChasers 5 месяцев назад
Inner sun visor helmets have lower safety ratings because you are sacraficing a lot of padding in the helmet where we are most likely to have an impact. Modular helmets also suffer from this. That notwithstanding, my personal experience with the inner sun visors, is the seam of the edge of the inner visor is always in my eye line creating distortion. So despite giving them tries on multiple occasions, they just don't work for me.
@MarmiteTheDog
@MarmiteTheDog 5 месяцев назад
@@CanyonChasers Like you I have had poor experiences with visors in the past, but a couple of years ago I got a Nexx Villjord Carbon helmet. Aside from being a highly rated modular helmet (I live in the tropics and need to flip at lights & junctions), the visor actually goes low enough to not interrupt my vision. I absolutely love this helmet!

I do 99% of my riding in the sun, so I'm going to optimize for that condition and have a clear pair of glasses for that 1% of times I'm caught out after dark. If I rode mostly at night, it would be the other way around.
