My collection has finally gotten big enough to require dividers. I went to Goodwill and bought a bunch of junk LPs (damaged, worthless,ect) and pulled the record out of the sleeve about 2 inches then glued them to the sleeve. Some white adhesive letters make it easy to read each division.

I have a few turntables, but the ones that are in use right now are a Technics SL-1350 (essentially a fully automatic SL-1200 with a stacking spindle option) and a JVC QL-A75. The Technics has a Pickering XV-15 / 625E (same as yours, but without the Jico stylus). The JVC has a Denon cartridge (I forget the model number - I don't think it's a 103 or a 110 - if it is, it's an older version of it). Both of these cartridges came from thrift store tables which were resold later. Great Video. The IKEA Expedit was replaced with the Kallax. The Kallax is still available in various colors. This is not an IKEA commercial. Cheers!

I can't imagine purging a single record. I have too much emotional attachment to them. I'm sure my wife wishes on every star she sees that I had your attitude towards vinyl collecting. I used Jico for a discontinued Shure stylus I had. Good people.

The purging is never easy, and certainly not for everyone. Thanks for the comment!
@gringogreen4719
@gringogreen4719 3 года назад
What I would recommend is that if a record was a disappointment or you forgot that you had it, those are good to get rid of. If an album is a must have, keep it. If you are not sure, keep it to be safe. Purging a collection should have a positive feeling once you are done. That's because you cleared out the stuff that is dead weight. For the most part if you sold something and regretted it, buy a better quality copy. Its very rare to not be able to reacquire an album. Most of what I purge pretty much falls into the camps of: I don't listen to it anymore. It fell short of my expectations. I no longer listen to that band or genre. I bought it and its not what I am into. Forgot I owned it. It's cool but I never listen to it. Someone I know will enjoy this far more than I do. Those albums I don't really miss. Also use the funds to help you acquire either new albums you want or new stereo equipment. That way there is a positive association linked to that purge or you end up getting what you really want without having to spend either anything or very little.
@offthebeatentracks4515
@offthebeatentracks4515 3 года назад
@@gringogreen4719 That's a very sensible approach. I had a major move about 2 years ago and I sold and gave away about 25,000 CDs (after digitizing them all). I couldn't sell a single record. Yes, I have 6 copies of a couple of albums and I've doubled up on copies hundreds of times. I also have albums that are truly awful. But, when when I buy a record or I'm given one, it becomes a member of my family. I don't defend it - it's simply how I've been since I started collecting 48 years ago.
@gringogreen4719
@gringogreen4719 3 года назад
@@offthebeatentracks4515 I get it. I try to keep my collection to a certain size so that's just under 1500 CDs and about 400 LPs. I probably have that many 7 inches too. Again, I get rid of the stuff I won't miss and hang on to the maybes until the next purge.

I second the JICO stylus. I have purchased from them for my vintage Audio Technica AT15-SA cartridge as the original ATN-15SS stylus is unavailable. And, yes, $185 might seem a lot to spend, but JICO does excellent work and seemingly makes styli to order. As far as those record shelves, Walmart has a variation with the Better Homes and Gardens cube organizer(s). Additionally they often offer free shipping as the larger units can be quite cumbersome to simply bring home in the car.

I kind of went nuts about 4-5 years ago and bought a Rega P3 with an Ortofon 2M Bronze cartridge that had some reviews saying it was a good cart for mono records. I very happy with it, but I wound up spending more on the turntable package than I spent on my integrated amp and CD player combined. I've got about 2500 records. Other turntables in the house are a rehabbed Dual 1229 (bought new in 74), B&O Beogram RX2 (also bought new), Goldring GR2 (a Rega budget knockoff with a surprisingly nice tonearm), and an Onkyo CP 1500F direct drive from my parent's stereo. Thanks for featuring my Eddie Haskell-ish question. I asked because my listening room is littered with hi-fi junk. I need to learn how to edit my stuff.

Hey Frank, you've made the most of your 10 x 10 foot room with a nice touch of pizazz and coziness to boot. You've got twice the number of albums as I have and I got to say that the way yours are stored looks way better than what I have so kudos there, as well. As far as the organizing of the Alice Cooper records, I've followed suit with you and put mine under C. Regarding the TT cartridge, I'm just using the stock moving magnet cartridge in my Rega RP1 table called the Carbon. A solid allrounder it is but the plan when I get back to work is to make a wholesale upgrade to maybe a Clearaudio table or a Project X series table with a moving coil cartridge after I can save up my pennies. Cheers !

Since all the VM-95 series share the same body, I also have a AT-VM95SP so I can play 78s. While I only have a few really old 78s, it really makes the difference to have a 3.0 mil conical stylus.

Nice video, Frank. Re: organizing your music, remember that the purpose of it is so you can find it. So, if putting Alice Cooper under “A” makes sense and you know that’s where you’ll look, do it! For me, the problem is classical music. It’s normally filed under the composer’s name, but especially if you’ve got CDs (and I’ve got 6,200+ of them) it’s very usual to have two works by two different composers on one CD. You can file it under the better-known of the two composers, but you’ll have little chance of ever finding the disc if you want to listen to the second composer.

You got to do what you got to do... but. Loose the desk (you don’t want ANYTHING between the speakers) and move these speakers 4 ft away from the wall and your sound will be light years over your set up now. I have always liked Audio Technica cartridges. They are work horses and they have suited me well over the last 30 years. My current turntable has a AT-VM95 cartridge with a 2.7 x 0.26 mil Shibata stylus (AT-VM95SH). I have been very pleased with the performance over the last 2 years I have had it. I had a Uturn Orbit but I sold it because I continued to have problems with the belts stretching out. My current turntable is a Pro-Ject Essential III that I love though I am just starting to have humming problems on the left channel. I think its the wires on the back of the cartridge (which I changed out). I plan to take it apart and hopefully fix that this weekend. Hi Frank, thanks for the video - great use of your 10x10 space, and nicely organized listening room! I believed you mentioned of the "modern" tables (Project, Rega, RT 85 etc.)-you prefer the Project Debut DC. I agree the carbon fiber tonearm is better than the RT85 - yet it's the combo of all components that create the end result. If your Project has the 2M Red, and RT85 Blue, you still like the overall sound better w ProJect? PS I have a small late 60's-80's LP collection (120) Classic Rock, Progressive Jazz, Pop, R&B, not much in Heavy Metal. Also do you plan on doing a Project Debut Evo video? Seems there are some significant upgrades. In the US EVO comes with Suniko Ranier. For me it's probably down to the 2 (RT85 or Project Evo). EVO: Better Tone arm VS RT 85; potentially better cart 2M Blue and removable headshell.... Thoughts? Thanks again!
@Channel33RPM
@Channel33RPM 3 года назад
I do like the RT85 but I have had issues with it holding a consistent speed. I changed the belt, but that didn't help. I finally tried a power conditioner, and that improved the issue to a large degree; however, the ProJect DC still gives me a better wow and flutter reading, and has been rock solid for years. Otherwise, both loaded with Blues - they sound very similar. The RT85 definitely offers the best bang for your buck, in terms of features right out of the box. It always has a removable headshell, which is a major bonus.

I use a Rega P10 with a Rega Apheta 3 cartridge. The super light chassis and cartridge provide fantastique dynamics and details from the albums. I am calming the analytical side a little bit via the phonostage which is a little bit on the warmer side. I would love to use various tone arms and cartridges for various applications/genres but that is not possible with this turntable. I may switch to one of the bigger, more flexible players like Transrotor in the future for that reason.

Speaking of organizing music collections: have you ever seen the film "Diner"? One of the characters has a major argument with his fairly new wife about putting his records back in the proper place. The organization system is way too complex for her to understand and she just wants to listen to music :) She annoys him even further when she states that she simply doesn't care what is on the flipside of any of his hit 45's!

I, like you Frank file records that are the name of a person, I.E Alice Cooper under C. otherwise I use the first letter of the band name. For example Molly Hatchett is under M, not H. Since I got back into Vinyl I've gone through several Tables. I started with a Denon DP300. Was not pleased with that table so I Got a Pioneer PL530 at a garage sale and had it refurbished. When the 530 lost it's left channel I bought a Technics SL1600. Love that table but it started having issues to. so I bit the bullet and bought an EAT B Sharp that I'm currently using. I upgraded the cart to a Dynavector 10X5 and am LOVING it.

I had an Ortofon 2M blue, but now I use a SoundSmith Zephyr MIMC* cartridge. It is a low output, so rather MC (really moving iron) rather than MM style. Different price point at ~$2K. Cleaner sound, more detailed. Very neutral, uncolored. Also just upgraded to Sibelius SG speakers, very neutral and detailed., lacks the low mids bloat.

Any with $160,000 burning a hole in their pockets should get the ELP turntable that doesn't require a needle but records have to be really clean or they will sound rough but the records will not wear out and last forever if they are played on the ELP Turntable or what about DS Audio's DS002+ the DS Audio power interface and will give the same output as a ceramic cartridge.

Thank you for the video. I am a new vinyl collector. I probably have a little more than 100 LP's at this point. Have you ever had issues with receiving brand new records, only to find that the outer album jacket has creases in them already? I don't know why this bothers me so much. Perhaps since new vinyl can be expensive, I feel that the retailers should practice better quality control with their merchandise before shipping it out to customers. I just wanted to know what your thoughts were about that. Thank you kindly. Blessings!

I would put Alice Cooper under C as would most Record Shops. When Andy's Records was running in the 90's and 00's, they had Bruce Springsteen under B, Elvis Presley under E etc etc. It took a while, but we got used to it. It's fine buying the Ortofon Blue, but the replacement stylus is twice the price of a MP110. Wow $500.00 for a Project DC. Is that Canadian or US dollars. If US, that's expensive. The DC here in the UK is £349.00 and the DC Evo is £499.00 but is an an improvement on just the DC.
