Speaking of skin of color, Dr Alexis Stephens, a black derm uses prescription azelaic acid. She also has eczema. Her tip for trying to help with the stinging is to place the azelaic acid in the refrigerator and apply cold.
azelaic acid was a game changer for my skin. healed my extremely broken / damaged / purple colored skin (from benzoyl peroxide usage that was too much for my sensitive skin apparently) and evened out my skin tone and some of my textured acne scars, not just the red marks im talking about actual scars with depressions in the skin. azelaic acid made them smoother. it's a holy grail i will keep using.
I am 25 and started having more acne (currently dealing with lots of stress from work, school, and wedding planning). I switched temporarily from differen gel to The Ordinary 10% azelaic acid. I am on my 3rd week and honestly see a difference in my post-acne marks and prevent further acne.
Ceve Re soap... I use the bar on my face. Use a washcloth and enjoy the bubbles . No idea for moisturizing... I have used Noxema since high school (almost 64) and that works for me. what about diet??
At about 25 a lot of women go through this. It happened to me too. I had to carry a list of comedogenic ingredients and thoroughly scan any products I used. It will get better.
experiencing the worst acne 2 months before my wedding, stressed about the wedding planning, work and the acne itself. Azelaic acid has not worked much for me.
I started dealing with hormonal acne after going off of birth control at 25. I never had acne in my teens, so I did all kinds of research. I tried salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, adapalene, topical antibiotics, etc. and the acne persisted. A few months ago I saw one of Dr. Dray's videos about azelaic acid. My real life dermatologist never mentioned this as a recommended treatment, but I was desperate for clear skin, so I purchased The Ordinary's OTC azelaic acid cream and it has literally changed my life. I went from having new breakouts every single day to not having a single blemish for 3 months straight. If you are struggling with what you believe is hormonal acne, you MUST try this stuff. It's super affordable as well.
Thank you so much for commenting! I'm on theh same boat having tried salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, and tretinoin so far with no success. Did you apply azelaic acid daily?
We love azaleic acid in my household. I’m using it for my rosacea and breakouts (45), my 15yo daughter for rough skin and acne and 17yo son for deeper acne. We’re all experiencing great results and now, after adding AA to his morning and evening routine, my son has the best looking skin in his class (took him 4 months to get there) with practically no acne at all, ever. Using 20% Skinoren available here in Europe over the counter
I swear Dr. Dray lives inside my head. I find myself curious about an ingredient like hydroquinone, and a few days ago, azelaic acid. And the next few days she has new videos talking about the ingredients. 😂❤
I've been using Azelaic acid and Tretenoin alternately every night for 6 months, following my derms advice and my skin is even better before I had this terrible breakout. I look younger than my actual age also thanks to Tretenoin :)
@@Sanatani_hindu__07 Usually Azelaic first. I cleanse my face, apply toner, niacinamide serum then apply Azelaic acid and after 20 mins, Tretonoin, followed by a Hydra[Hyaluronic acid] moisturizer. [Only at night, twice a week(Tretinoin)]
god, i don’t know what i would do without this channel. i have such intense anxiety over switching products for my acne. i was on differin and it has been working well, but my dermatologist wants me to lessen my use and go to this. i just wanted to know more information due to the fear of my skin getting worse again. this has helped my worries so much!
Your latest videos have been so on point as to what I’m looking for! My dermatologist recommended tretinion, /etc, and to follow up with azeleic acid. And your latest videos have been exactly the information I need, I’m trying to keep my skincare simple nowadays and your shopping videos are godsend, and now this update on azelaic acid is just 👏👏👏👏👏 on point Doc!
@@asimweruganyoisa9483 Did my comment disappear, or is it just for me? :/ i wrote a lot explaining everything and now I don't see it. Tell me if I have to write it again... No worries, just listen to your skin! There is something you need to change in your routine and it will be fine ;)
I was diagnosed with Rosacea this year and have been using the RX azelaic acid faithfully for six months.. that is until my insurance decided I no longer need it and won’t cover it! It’s definitely made a HUGE improvement for my intense flairs, and made my redness less noticeable.. can’t tell you how many times I’ve been asked “wow are you sunburned?” Or “I can see you’ve got some sun”.. meanwhile I literally am indoors 75% of my life lol. Great video, thanks Dr Dray! You answered my questions about using it with other actives!!
I'm actually going through the worst flares of rosacea. I use Azelaic acid from Paula's Choice because I can't go to the doctor and get prescription strength. What else do you use for rosacea? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
@@goldenheart2667 oh I’m sorry to hear that! It’s rough I know, but the two things I’ve tried recently that really help alleviate the redness are the Cetaphil “Redness Relieving” night moisturizer and La Roche-Posay’s “Toleriane Dermallergo” ultra soothing repair moisturizer.. I use them together at night and am amazed at how good that combo is! Hope this helps🤍
I've been using Dermalogica azelaic acid along with tretinoin & my results are phenomenal. I only use tretinoin every other night, but azelaic acid I use every night along with my purito ceramide moisturiser & spf 50 in morning 😊
@Andreasplace hmm yeah when I started using for 1st time it felt bit tingly n my skin did go bit red but once my skin got accustomed to it everything was fine, just start using it once or twice a week 1st then bump it up slowly 🙌
@MariosPOS yes but u have to slowly work it in so your skin can tolerate it, like tretinoin I used it once a week for 6 weeks n slowly I increased it 🙌 slow way is the fast way 🫡
I used to use Skinoren, which I tolerated without any problem. Unfortunately it is not available in our country at the moment so I switched to Finacea. I tried it as I used Skinoren, after moisturizing my skin. My skin was stinging and burning, both ways, tried to apply it immediately also wait until my skin is completely dry. None of them worked. Finally managed to make it work. I use it after cleansing to fully dried skin, then apply a moisturizer. This is my experience. Hope it helps someone.
I use prescription azelaic acid (20%) for over 3 years, I have really bad rosacea and melasma and this is literally saving my life on the daily basis. Nothing came even close before and trust me I tried everything. Thank you for this video it is really helpful as I was worried sometimes if it is ok to use long term but every time I tried to stop, all my symptoms come back
I use the Cream at 15% because the Gel was to drying for Me! But I have used it for Year's! So yes you can use it forever! I also use prescription Tretinoin Cream at the highest strength at 0.01%, you should have your Dermatologist give you Tretinoin Cream as well, together they are a POWER HOUSE! I'm also going on Hydroquinone in December as well! I got that Glass Skin Girl 😉 You CAN TOO!!! We are Lucky because we actually have a Dermatologist, instead of buying over-the-counter crap that doesn't work!
Can you give some insight regarding your experience, I have been wondering if azelaic acid would cause facial hair growth? Has that been the case during those 3 year? I have been meaning to try it but some online claims about facial hair made me think otherwise
My dermo has me using both azelaic acid cream and metronidazole cream .75%, I also use Retin A at night and my 66 year old skin is almost line free and my mild rosacea is under control. I wish some of my capillaries were gone but I can have a laser treatment, just haven't done so yet. Great video!
Red light ( I have Lightstim device) helps capillaries on the sides of my nose disappear, BUT I have to hold this device longer than 30 min each side. I’ve tried lasers, but my capillaries quickly reappear, I would say few days after laser treatment.
I'm really glad the vehicle of azelaic acid was mentioned. I've been doing a lot of research and reading reviews on the 3 different vehicles. Most of the folks that have rosacea and use azelaic acid on forums I have read claim the foam is more gentle than the gel in their experience. 😁
Thank you Dr. Dray!! I love Azelaic Acid in my routine, as I have rosacea and melasma. I appreciate all your knowledge, recommendations and your willingness to share. I also appreciate your honesty, and your humor. You make me laugh in almost every video. I am so happy I found your channel, you are a bright spot in my day and I am so grateful. Many blessings!💖💖💖
How was your rosacea in the beginning with azelaic Acid? Did it first become worse ( initial abgravation/ worsening). Would appreciate if you could share your experience. Thank you ❤
Hey I also have rosacea and melasma , what other products do you use? Have you noticed a different in your melasma? I just noticed it above my upper lip :(
I use Prescription 15% Cream and I love it! My redness has just gone! I use it twice a Day, along with Prescription Tretinoin Cream 0.01%! I'm also going to have My Dermatologist give Me Hydroquinone next in December! I really do have that Glass Skin People are trying to get! I LOVE MY DERMATOLOGIST ❤
I have been using Fincea Gel (Azelaic acid) and minocycline for 9 days now. So far so good, keeps my acne at bay. Noticed my pimples and acne have improved.
9:27 Another reason of the stinging I've heard from my pharmacist friend is the challenging formulation. It's very difficult to dissolve azelaic acid properly. So in some not well formulated products there's partial extra high concentration which can lead to irritation. I personally use the 15% one from Isispharma and never have problems due to their patented formula. The Ordinary 10% and Facetheory 15% sting like hell.
That was a very helpful video! I have Finacea, but was afraid to use it because I’m using Tazorac. This really helps to alleviate my concerns. Thank you, Dr. Dray!
I've wondered about the benefits of azalaic acid. This is right on time because because Retinol doesn't seem to be helping the hyperpigmentation in spots that I have. Thanks for covering so much ground here and I will check out your other vid on this ingredient. Happy Tuesday 🌞🌷
Can you give us an update if you’ve tried it? Im also on tretinoin but I’m struggling with hyperpigmentation after my pimples heal so I’m wondering if i should give it a try
@@mehh1h I haven't tried it yet, because I don't have a serious problem with dark spots, but from glancing over some of the comments it seems to help a lot of people.
For me anti-biotics should only be used if it is more likely to affect your overall health, but in most cases of skin issues like acne, you just need skin turn over to discourage bacteria to propagate in your skin. In a way, it's a natural process that would be beneficial to your skin in the long run.
Dr. Dray- I just adore all of your videos. I was diagnosed with mild rosacea last year, and I found azelaic acid on my own through research. I brought it to my derm. But my insurance would not approve to cover the prescription, so she prescribed me antibiotics- but I will NOT take them for the reason you addressed in your video. I have been using an over the counter 10% Azelaic acid for a while now and LOVE IT. it’s my favorite skincare ingredient and the only thing (except sulfur- another holy grail) that really helps the redness 💗 I wish 20% azelaic acid was more accessible!!!! Amazing video, as always 💗♥️💗♥️
I’ve been using azelaic acid 20% for only 4 days now and literally all my hormonal acne is gone. I can’t believe it. I’m also using tret but it never worked for my acne, I just use it for anti-aging
Great information Dr. Dray! I definitely have melasma on my neck but I’m wondering if it’s possible to have it on your chest as well. Would azelaic acid be recommended for the chest if melasma is present and also potentially improve darkness from sun damage?
I found that benzyl peroxide worked wonders for my acne but i recently developed eczema and it irritated it so i switched to azelaic acid and i found that it worked really well for both, however when i have a really bad break down i use a benzyl peroxide gel as a spot treatment so it doesn't irritate the rest of my sensitive skin
I recently came off of birth control for no particular reason apart from me feeling not myself whilst taking it. My skin BROKE OUT very very bad. I was on treclin gel whilst on the pill but felt I had become immune to it a little. Bought IS clinical’s very very expensive cleanser and active serum, that made my face so so sensitive and made my breakouts worse. Two weeks ago i switched back to a very basic Cetaphil cleanser, simple soothing toner and simple moisturiser with azaelic acid on top and my skin is nearly completely clear again with a few dark marks remaining. If I get a new spot I dab azaelic acid on it at night and it will be flat or a white head by the morning. I will implement treclin or a tretnoin back into my skincare once my skin calms down again but right now azaelic acid is amazing
@@laurenv2003 hey! I use the skinoren 20%. I’m from the UK and I can buy it with an online private prescription for like £15. I didn’t think it was doing anything at first because it’s very gentle but 2/3 weeks later my skin is looking much better 😊
@@daniellaalexander7632 ok thank u!! Maybe I'll see if I can get a script from my Dr but hopefully it doesn't cost a fortune, lol. It's AWESOME that u guys can buy it that way there! Well thank u so much!! 🥰
I have mild Rosacea and acne. When I use Azelaic acid, my skin gets red and tingles/itches for about a minute or 2. This only happens around the nose, mouth, and btwn the brows. Then I moisturize and use tretinoin with no issues.
Thank you so much Dr. Dray! I am using Cos De BAHA Azelaic Acid for 2 months now due to my Rosacea & I am very happy with the result😊 plus . 02% Retinol(using 2x, a week) thank goodness no irritation from it.❤️.... God Bless!!!
Last day my friend said that my skin texture is destroyed...So tonight I washed my face with my regular Benzoyl peroxide soap... Then put on glycerin.. on top of that I put my 10% niacinamide serum... and layered it with 0.25% Tretinoin and 20% Azelaic acid (today is my first day using this two ingredients) .. let's see what happens to my tomorrow ☠️🤞🏻
Morning Dr Dray hope u r well n 🖐Hello Every1 n Happy Tuesday😀n what a Wonderful Vid…. thanks n This is Gonna b so Insightful🔥👍n Continued Blessings to All💜….
Dr my wife has intense malasma, the local Dr prescribed her Azelaic acid 10% and glycolic acid 6%, he asked her to take both and mix them and apply in the night. She has been using it for more than 5 months, the Malasma patches just lightened a little but not fully gone. Recently I gave her Hydroquinone 4% and Tretinoin 0.025% she has been using it for just ten days (only night routine exept Sunday) and I can already see great results. My question is can she also apply Azelaic acid in her morning routine, and glycolic acid only once on Sunday evenings.
Doctor, what about potassium azeloyl deglycinate (PAD)? And is cream with 2% kojic dipalmitate + 5% PAD be effective for melasma or it is better just 10% azelaic acid serum?
Thank you for all of your videos, they have helped me establish a proper skin care routine and have seen such a huge difference. I would love to see you do a review of the brand Face Theory, specifically their moisturizers. I have used their products for a year or so now and I like them however I would LOVE to hear your feedback about whether they are actually formulated well? ❤
I'm so confused - suffering from post-retinol irritation & diluted capillaries/redness (not yet diagnosed as fully fledged rosacea) should I be using azaleic acid or should I focus on restoring the skin barrier first?
Restore the skin barrier first Whatever treatment you may be on leave that if your skin barrier is compromised Our first priority should be to make our skin barrier healthy ones it’s all healthy any treatment or concerns besides this would work much better and will give faster results
Personally i used Azelaic acid 20 % cream and loved it. It does the job clearing and evening the skin tone and i hadn't any particular peeling problem with it and in combination of course with my other skin related product aka moisturizer and sunscreen 😊❤. It did sting and had a briefly burning sensation but it was tolerable just a split of a second 😊. One thing is that "my" Azelaic acid 20% cream is the over the counter one not the prescription Azelaic aka finacea, skinoren. But it had the strength of those bad boys 😎👍. Wonderful ingredient and thanks Doctor Andrea for pinpointing these important facts about Azelaic Acid ❤✌🙏😇😄.
@@SR-kh6yq Right now my dermatologist said to take one month off but yeah everyday because my vehicle also has salicylic and hyaluronic acid calendula and other ingredients (it's also a hydrating cream apart from having high percentage azelaic acid).
Thank you for your vids and for info in this one. Helpful. I showed the hyperpigmentation on on face and My dermatologist didn't tell me as much as you have. I knew to go straight to your vid after getting it prescribed to really understand more about it 😊
How long should i use azelic acid after getting my wanted result!? Should i continue or stop it?if i stop using after getting my wanted result, will it get worse!?
Great video! I recently started 15% azelaic acid for papulopustular rosacea and hormonal acne while trying to conceive. Can you recommend a good moisturizer to deal with the skin dryness and sensitivity while using azelaic acid that are appropriate for my skin conditions? Thanks 😊
I'm not a derm, but I used Aveeno Facecreams and La Roche Posay Cicaplast Baume B5 and it helped wonders. I do have very sensitive skin and rosacea and used it for the same reason you do.
@@doaametal1935 It works wonders, doesn't it? Calmed every red patch on my skin, when it was a bit freaked out. I use 20% azelaic acid and on some days it burned a bit in the beginning.🤭
Why my melasma become more darker then before after using azelaic acid also wearing sunscreen properly. Should i quit or continue using it I heard that it's become more darker before shedding it from skin. Please help me. 😢 Do i need to worry about it.
hello doctor i need a little help i did pyruvic acid and lactic acid peel i still have 5 sessions,, AND i have hyperpigmentation is it good ? or should i ask them to change the acids ? i will be so thankful if u replayed :D
Is this safe to use if you have vitiligo? I have some PIH on my face from acne but will it trigger my vitiligo since it’s a lightening ingredient?Thank you.
