As a lover of pinball and a lover of TechDweeb videos, I couldn't be happier to see this one pop up on my RU-vid feed! I even get to be here early for once! Thank you for yet another great video.
My favorite is 'Revenge of the Gator' on gameboy. The physics are perfect and I played that cartridge to death as a kid. Next best is Metroid Pinball on DS.
Pinball Quest for the NES is my all time favorite Pinball game. It's got a rough start but after a bit of learning you really start to get into the adventure of it all. Plus it has other tables outside of the Main Quest just for fun. I'd call this an underrated masterpiece.
I loved to play many pinball games. 😀 My favorite pinball video game is Crue Ball, which I tried out in my childhood at one of my closest friends. That game had many memorable tunes, more than 3 tables and a bonus round where I could control a ship with pinball rackets. I usually load and play that Sega Genesis game on any device with Retroarch. 🙂
Pinball Dreams/Fantasies are best on Amiga. There's a 3rd game in that series, Illusions that's good too...and Slam/Tilt on Amiga is awesome too Pinball Dreams has a mindblowing modern homebrew port on Amstrad CPC, an 8-bit UK micro Odama on Gamecube is worth a shout, feudal Japan war game...killing armies with a giant rock manipulated using flippers Yoku's Express on Switch is great too...pinball-based adventure platformer
Great list! 6 of these aren't in my collection yet, so I'll have to get on that! The pinball game I have the most nostalgia for is Sierra's 3-D Ultra Pinball. It's a bit tricky to play today, as it was an early Windows (pre-Win95) game, but it is part of the eXoWin3x archive, so you can play it pretty easily through that! There are also some psx pinball games that I don't know if you've mentioned before, like True Pinball and Kyuutenkai. So maybe give those a try on your retro handheld of choice!
Please make another video in this series. This one was great and had me looking thru roms to see if I had these games. Devils Crush looks great. I really wanted a TG16 back in the day. They sent these traveling demo trailers around the US to promote the system where you could play them and try it out. It was a tractor trailer set up with lots of systems and games.
As a big pinball fan, I love this video. One of my favorite Game Boy games of all times is missing badly though: Revenge of the Gator. Iconic music and super fun table! And physics are incredible for the device. Just played for an hour again. Also, tell me you‘re not from Europe without telling me you‘re not from Europe: the Pinball Dreams / Fantasies / Illusions is originally an Amiga creation :) Will now get some of the games mentioned that I haven‘t heard of before, thanks! EDIT: Played NES Pinball Quest a few minutes ago. Another absolutely brilliant and unique gem.
Forgot: my current favorite digital pinball is Pinball Deluxe Reloaded on mobile, with more than a decade of refinement under its hood, this game is pure brilliance. Super creative tables, fantastic physics. My daily go-to pinball game.
Dude SNES and Sega in particular has a ton of good pinball games. Surprised virtual pinball didn't make the list. You could build your own machine and it was pretty involved. I haven't tried to run it yet but I'm pretty sure it's on the rg35xx I just got.
When I saw your thumbnail, I had to go finish Technology Connection's video about mechanical pinball machines. He goes into more detail than anyone ever wants to know about how they work, and it's wonderous. I'm terrible at pinball but can't help myself playing sometimes anyway.
I've always wanted to play with pinball machine but never found one here in brazil, my first contact with pinball was with that one game from windows XP, i forgot the name, oh such good old times... wish i could have them back
That is so sad! Taito do Brasil made pinball tables in the 1970s and 1980s, and they're some of my favorite tables to play in Visual Pinball X. Classic tables like Rally or Shark are soooo much fun!
Awesome list. I have been playing Kirbys Pinball, Revenge of the Gator Gold rom hack and Pokemon Pinball on my Analogue Pocket lately. I suck at pinball but always loved playing them in arcades back in the day and video pinball can be just as cool and even do unique stuff only games can do.
The last pinball machine I played was at a punk show, it was a Halloween (the movie) table. I took a picture with the POW-KITTY!!! on it. It was pretty cool, had the music from the movie playing in the background.
I was going to be so mad if pokemon pinball R&S was not on this list. This game came with my GBA when I was a kid and it's one of the games I keep coming back to, always emulating it whenever I can.
I've been a fan of video pinball since, well, Video Pinball on the 2600. Some of my favorites you did NOT cover: Video Pinball (2600) Night Mission Pinball (Apple II) Extreme Pinball (DOS) Pro Pinball: The Web (DOS - all four games in the series, really, but the first one especially. The Saturn got a great conversion of it.) Crystal Caliburn (Windows) Eight Ball Deluxe (DOS) And many, many, many more.
I’m real pinball guy and go to my local BeerCade a couple times of month to play. There’s so many real world pinball machines it’s hard to pick a favorite. Each decade had there great machines. I do enjoy the console video game pinball and have dabbled in Virtual Pinball on PC with FX3, Visual Pinball, Future Pinball, etc. So have you attempted VP yet? You certainly have the PC specs. Would love to see a series on VP.
DOS or AMIGA Pinball Fantasies is my favorite. I have a soft spot for Pinball Quest on the NES even though the physics suck.Demon's Tilt on Steam is a nice spiritual successor to Devils Crush but the physics are actually goood. I had the Tales From the Crypt and Earthshaker. I was pretty good at those. favorite real table is still Medieval madness because ot the ramps and quotes though. "I'm lord Howard Hurts, who the F**k are you" or "I'm the duke of Bourbon IT"S HAPPY HOUR!" or "they've stolen our shrubberys!"
Other examples of good retro 2D pinball games is Epic Pinball (Another MS-DOS pinball game), Balls of Steel (A 3D Realms pinball game, which is getting a remaster by Atari), Full Tilt Pinball (which is where the popular Space Cadet Pinball originated) and while it's not retro, Pinball Deluxe Reloaded for PC and mobile is a pretty good example of a modern 2D retro pinball game. With 2D pinball games with an adventure theme, they don't get much better than Yoku's Island Express. Sure it's not retro either, but I still want to give it an honourable mention, because it's the best adventure pinball I've played, and it's 2D as well.
I don't like pinball. I have no desire to play any of these pinball games. But man... I just enjoying listening to you fawn over them with love. I'm glad you made this video because you gave me a taste of some really great pixel art that I otherwise would have missed out on. Thanks for making the video. Ok fine... I'm going to check out Devil's Crush, it's not the first time you've mentioned it.
There is a pinball arcade and bar near me that has I think all the real machines you showed here. I like playing the Star Trek TNG, Pinbot, Bride of Pinbot machines.
No Space Cadet? It deserves at least an honorable mention, as the most famous virtual pinball ever. As for me, now I must try Pro-pinball Big race USA. It was such a long time ago, but I remember it as being amazing.
Mr Dweeb, although not retro, have you played Yoku's Island Express? I think it would be your jam... a great metroidvania with the controls of a puzzle filled pinball machine
Love the retro pinball games, this is one of those genres that i kinda knew was a thing and i enjoy pinball but im glad to have some suggestions to play and hunt down! like i dont have any TG-16 games but im going to research it and get some now. love it! More of these please! Would love to try ninja turtles pinball if i could find one! I really loved ghost busters and the south park one they had at my local bar-cade which they dont have anymore. i was actually good at that one! Adams family is really fun as well.
Hey Tech Dweeb 😊 I have a suggestion to throw by you. Go to Las Vegas BC Vegas has a pinball hall of fame right on the strip with hundreds of classic pinball machines u can play 😮 HAPPY GAMING
My favorite pin is Creature From the Black Lagoon. So much so that my bathroom is all decked out with CFTBL memorabilia including a framed Flyer from the original table. Please tell me you know about Virtual Pinball, specifically Visual Pinball X. As a fellow pinball enthusiast and retro gaming enthusiast, my modified AtGames Legends Pinball machine that I use for VPX is my all time favorite thing to play. It's like 90% the joy of playing a real table, but the variety of video pinball and an absolute fraction the cost.
Ok so no lie. There’s no arcades near me. But I recently went to the city for an appointment and my family and I stayed at a hotel with a mini arcade in it. I was in my glory. Being wise on wasting my tokens, I gravitated to the experiences I can’t emulate at home. Coincidentally I went with T2 the arcade game (because of the guns, they needed calibrating) and T2 the pinball game. Again, because I can’t emulate that experience at home. And I had a great time. It’s been years, and I didn’t last long (that’s what she said), but hey, great time
What's that pinball game made by Namco where instead of it having flippers it has a paddle similar to breakout? That is the weirdest pinball game I think I've ever played.
@@ilkeryoldas they re-released it on the Wii As part of this weird compilation that had a bunch of modern takes on old arcade games replacing that character with Pac-Man. I remember you use the Wii remote to move the paddle back and forth. I wish I could remember the name of that game also.

Missed opportunity to mention Microsoft 3D Pinball: Space Cadet, a certified classic that's on postmaster now. It was my first pc game, and it's still good today. Still amazing video. Pinball games need more love. 🍻
LGR has a good video on the origins of Space Cadet from a game called “Full Tilt! Pinball” that included it plus two more tables. TechDweeb has shown how to emulate DOS but is there a way to emulate earlier version of windows on these handhelds?
@@thomasmeldrum6238 You'd need a lot of power to emulate Windows XP, but if your device supports PortMaster there's a port for 3d Space Cadet Pinball (you just need to find and add the game files)
"Pinball Dreams" was awesome back on my Amiga 500. "Ignition" was decent (if a bit plain - so much empty space in the lower third of the table) and I found "Beat Box" to be annoying, but "Steel Wheel" and especially "Nightmare" were excellent fun for me. EDIT: Pinball Dreams/Fantasies/Illusions were by Digital Illusions (who later became DICE). They had nothing to do with Pyscho Pinball, which was by Codemasters (who made the Game Genie, DiRT, Lord of the Rings Online, etc.). EDIT 2: Oh, yeah, I'd forgotten that I had bought all three of them (the 'Deluxe' editions with extra tables that I've never heard of before) many, many years ago. They work perfectly out of the (DOS)box on Linux, too. Illusions was a bit meh, but Dreams & Fantasies are definitely worth the $10 US they currently cost.
There was two more after this too apparently, Pinball Dreams 2 and Pinball Mania and all of them can be found on GOG in a pack named Pinball Gold Pack.
@@Nodster Yep. Dreams 2 used to be separate, but was folded into Dreams Deluxe (replacing the basic PB Dreams). Mania hadn't been in the Gold pack originally, but was added into Fantasies Deluxe. Not sure yet what's in Illusions Deluxe, if anything. :) EDIT: It's just Pinball Illusions, no Deluxe for this one, so just 4 tables. Oh, well. :)
This is all such juicy Pinball lore in the replies! I was hooked on Nightmare since it was free on the Amiga Power coverdisk, eventually got the full game of Dreams. Have only recently discovered the GBA game Pinball Challenge Deluxe which seems to be a combined Dreams and Fantasies?
My favorite actual pinball machine is High Speed. I used to play that as a kid in the arcade at the bowling alley where my dad had his bowling leagues. The Addams Family would get an honorable mention due to playing that at the arcade in the mall when I was in high school. For digital pinball, Epic Pinball (PC) is my favorite with its 12 Tables. Honorable mentions would be Pinball Dreams/Fantasies/Illusions (PC), Space Cadet (PC), Dragon's Fury (Genesis- I didn't ve a TG-16 growing up), Pinball Construction Set (C64), and Thunderball! (Odyssey 2).
My favorite pinball game is Kirby Pinball for Gameboy. There's a really interesting recovery mechanic, where if you time correctly you can recover higher on the multistage board. And there are boss fights. It's awesome.
Pinballs Dreams, Fantasies and Illusions, all 3 were best played on the Amiga 1200. The AGA versions had the sharpest visuals and the best quality music/sounds.
If PSP can be considered retro, there is Pinball Hall of Fame: The Gottlieb Collection (same for Williams as well) They recreate real tables so well, my favourite was Whirlwind which featured spinning platforms inside when whirwind events happened, swerving the ball
Its probably my bias but i prefer the mega drive version of devils crush/dragons fury. Probably because of how the music sounds being what i had as a kid
Awesome list! I love the recommendations in the comments too. Few of my favorites (not mentioned in the video or the comments) are on Android: - Space Pinball - Pinball Deluxe Reloaded - Vector Pinball
Some of my favorite retro pinball games that weren't mentioned here are High Speed and Rollerball for NES, Time Cruise for TG-16, and Metroid Prime Pinball on DS!
Who doesn't love pinball?! I really like the Psycho Pinball for some reason... 🤔 Back in the old floppy drive computer days, we had Epic Megagames "Epic Pinball", it was the most realistic pinball game I ever played at the time! I remember liking it so much I had to get every table that was available! One Shareware table wasn't enough to satisfy my pinball cravings!
There are enough pinball video games (and good ones!) to warrant a second installment. That's crazy! Anyway, I'm a fan of HAL Labs pinball, whether it's Pokemon Pinball or Revenge of the Gator or (going way, way back) Rollerball on NES. Midnight Magic kicks booty on the Atari 2600... so much better than Video Pinball.
I really enjoy these unorthodox videos from you, Dweeb. As a child of the '90s, I have memories of going to arcades and playing pinball. Especially when the mortal Kombat and House of the Dead cabinets were taken, almost always the pinball machines were available to play. 😅
I've been playing Pokemon pinball quite a bit since I got my rg35xxsp. I've also been playing Demon's Tilt on Switch. It kinda brings ya back to the Devil's Crush days :)
He's a pinball wizard "There has got to be a twist A pinball wizard's Got such a supple wrist How do you think he does it? I don't know What makes him so good?" The Who 1969
There are some really good pinball games. One people may not know much about is Nascar Pinball which was on Windows. I like Pokemon Pinball on the GBC. I'd love to play the rare Street Fighter table.
Awesome vid! Knowing how you are with emulation and being a pinball fan, I’m surprised you haven’t gotten into virtual pinball. I got into the hobby bout two years ago and it’s great! You build a dedicated cab to emulate actual pinball machines or play originals made. One of my personal favorite is made by a popular creator JP Salas. He did an actual 3d version of space cadet. So when you play it on a cab it’s like the video game but if it were an actual pinball machine (if that makes sense.)
nice list, i've always loved gba pinball games for some reason, the graphical style tends to be very unique (pacman, pokemon, mario pinball land, muppet pinball mayhem, and even outside of cartoony artstyles like with pinball of the dead... they all have a very distinct "gba" look) i'd have a few of those on my list, with things like rollerball on the msx, revenge of the gator on the original gameboy, pinball pulse the ancients beckon on dsiware (especially that last one, it's made by the same devs as timeshock! and the whole pro pinball quadrilogy, who incidentaly also made metroid pinball on the ds, and trully feels like a lost sequel in the series, the design is *so* good), and probably wildfire's balls of steel, too (that engine was *great* ; they made variants for kiss, austin powers, dirt track racing and a whole bunch of random licences). and my favorite dos pinball is amtex's adaptation of 8 ball deluxe.
I really don't play pinball. But, these look like fun. I'm going to have to try these out. The two pinball games I know of are the Pinball built into Windows, and Mario Pinball for the GBA.
Cool video. Would love more videos dedicated to specific kinds of retro games like this in the future. I enjoyed playing pinball machines when I was a kid and would come across one but I never played them frequently enough to actually get good at them. The only pinball video games I ever played were Metroid Prime Pinball and the Space Cadet one that used to come preinstalled in Windows back in the day.
I love mario pinball land on gba. It's one of those kinda hip to hate but I love anyway style games. Also, bonus retro fun fact, back in the day I used to go into the arcade and, under the pinball machine(s), switch it off and on again for a free play on startup. Retro piracy baby! Hehehe...
