Hi Mitali! It really depends on how many invitations you get and this depends on how active embassies in your posting are so it's really hard to tell. Probably around 20 per year at the minimum? :)

Great and informative video! Does a diplomat's spouse necessarily have to be from the same country as the one represented by the diplomat ?

Not at all. There are actually so many foreign-born spouses. :) It just depends on the country the diplomat represents. The diplomat might just have to ask for permission from the ministry to marry a foreigner and they'll do a background check on the person.

Hi, Raghav. When it comes to parents, I guess the major challenge is that you don't get to spend time with them as often since you are living abroad for years. So we make it up to them during vacations. ☺

They will be send back to their country. The ministry of Foriegn Affairs will usually send you back to your country of origin.

I wonder how the experience differs for female vs male FSOs with spouses or partners. I feel like for female FSOs it would be more difficult because a male counterpart might be less willing to abandon career growth to follow the female FSO.

There are still more female spouses in most of the postings I’ve been to so this is pretty sound observation. But thankfully, the number of male spouses is also growing (though it’s a bit slow). 😊

How is the weekends of a diplomat is? Can you roam around a host country with your spouse or you have to follow formal code of conduct even outside? Please reply!!

Hello, Abhinav. Your weekends are generally free unless you have a big event (state visits, visiting delegations, etc). You can also be on call for certain emergencies but travel within and around your host country with your family is doable. We travel as private individuals on weekends or when my husband gets to file for short vacations.

Just curious. At least for the Philippines. Do embassadors have to have connections with powers that be or it is open positions to the average kababayan? Thanks

Hi! Not at always. There are two ways one can become an ambassador. Either you take the FSO exam (open to the average kababayan, with certain requirements like level of education etc), join the DFA, and rise up the ranks until you become a career ambassador or you get appointed by the current President. ☺️

Carol can you tell me? is it possible that a diplomates wife can do work from there mother country after marriage with her forginer husband? Actually my friend is from India and wants to marry the girl who is from Armenia and she is doctor there . So after marriage can she will be able to do work from her mother country or she have to leave the work and go with her Indian diplomat husband?? Because here in India it's a rule that if you marry to a forginer than He/ She have to take Indian citizenship... Please guide me????

Hello! I am an aspiring diplomat who's about to enter college in the Philippines and it would really be great to learn some preparation tips from an actual diplomat. With this, may I suggest a video content in an interview format with your husband asking how he prepared during his collegiate life, how he passed the CSC and FSO exams, how it's like to finally be a diplomat and others. This would really be of great help to aspiring diplomats like me. I do hope you'd consider my suggestion! Thank you! :>

Hi! :) I have a video coming up on this but I'll be interviewing another diplomat. My husband is camera shy. ;) I do have someone great lined up for this and who's been in the foreign service for a longer period so do watch out for it! If it works out well, I might turn it into a series so do watch out for it.

I'm sorry if this is a stupid question but I wanna know, can 2 diplomats marry each other? If they can, do they have to do Long distance relationship?

Hi, Jojo. Yes, it's possible for two diplomats to get married. For most junior diplomats, they can still get posted in the same country but of course, this gets more difficult as they go up the ranks. At one point, they'll have to do long distance especially if one is about to become head of a post (either Ambassador or Consul General).

Hi! I can't speak for all countries but for the Philippines, you don't. You just need to pass the FSO Exam. :)

They can, as long as they are declared as your dependents. Meaning, they are not gainfully employed. ☺️

Hi Laura! For the PH Foreign Service exam, you don't have to be extremely fluent. However, I was told that you should at least be able to comprehend the questions and answer in complete sentences (short essays). It also takes about 5% of your grade. I'd say B2 level for your foreign language is a safe bet. :)

Most of the time yes. Unless a diplomat is sent to a country where it's not advisable to bring family due to safety or other reasons.

Similar to that of the men. :) When I was covering the the Philippines' Foreign Ministry as a TV reporter, I remember that there were already more women than men in the service.

Spreading a particular belief might be a problem. Promoting it and its cultural aspects in an educational sense to help others understand your country and people better shouldn't be.:)
