10 natural and free fertilizers to better feed your soil!
When you don't want to spend money on synthetic fertilizers, you can easily find or make free products.
So here are 10 natural products and their benefits.
1 - COMPOST: It's the most complete fertilizer. The star of natural fertilizers. It's made with all the organic waste: vegetable peelings, grass cutting, tree pruning, weeds, dead leaves etc.
Nitrogen category: 5 products
2 - Manure are the stars for nitrogen.
Cow, horse, hen, worms (vermiculture) manures, but be careful, all manures are not equal and don't always contain nitrogen. Some also have a bit of phosphorus and potassium. Don't use them fresh as they would be too strong.
Too bad if you don't have hens because their manure is the richest and the most complete.
Correction: Hens manure contains 5 to 35g of nitrogen per kilo and not 100g like I said in the video.
And if you pluck your hens, be aware that the feathers are 80% nitrogen! So put the feathers in the compost.
3- Unfortunately, not everyone has free manure. If you live in the countryside, you can easily find a cattle producer to sell you manure for a low price et here's a tip: equestrian centers are usually happy to get rid of manure because they have too much. Otherwise, we all produce manure every day. The 1 to 2 liters of urine that a human produce contain 2% of urea, that's 1% of nitrogen, but also phosphorus and potassium and a lot of micronutrients. The "piss in the water can" technique is an old gardener technique. For female gardeners, it's more complicated so I let you think about it! Only inconvenient: salt.
About urine used as manure, I recommend this great reference document: mediamanager.sei.org/document...
Now, for the most motivated gardeners, there's also the dry toilets solution but it's more complicated to manage than the pee pee in the water can.
4 - Another nitrogen star: nettle manure or alternatively grass cutting manure for a quick action. They mainly contain nitrogen but also a bit of phosphorus, potassium and a lot of micronutrients.
They can also be used to mulch for a slow action.
5 - Another nitrogen star: blood and fish waste. 2 kg fish wast fertilizer for 10 liters of water, then 10 cL in the water can.
6- Grass cutting and green manure (clover, mustard, lucerne). All leguminous bring nitrogen to the soil and strengthen its structure thanks to their roots.
- Phosphorus category
7- You'll find a great amount of calcium phosphate in crushed raw bones from the meat you eat (beef, chicken etc). Put your BBQ bones in the compost or crush them with a hammer. And if you have a friend who is a butcher, give him a call!
Potassium category - 3 products
8 - Banana peels
9 - Comfrey manure
10 - Ashes: Calcium and potassium. It's a great organic fertilizer for tomatoes and potatoes (among other)
Supplies
What about coffee grounds? I didn't put it in the list because it can have bad effects if you use it directly. You should only use it in the compost. Or, as horse manure, to grow mushrooms.
Mineral or organic fertilizer?
Mineral fertilizer, the one in bottle, in pellets or in powder, feed directly the plant, so it could grow in a dead soil like rock wool of tomato factories. If you pick a universal fertilizer, you will only have NPK and nothing else!
Organic fertilizer, manure, mulch etc, feed the soil of in fact, the soil fauna, that is to say the animals that live in your soil (springtails, myriapods, worms). They eat organic fertilizers and their droppings will feed the plant with NPK of course but also a lot of other nutrients. There's no need to say which fertilizer I prefer!
3/ When should you give fertilizers to your plants?
During all the growing period, so in continental France, 3 to 4 times per month from April to September. Give more nitrogen from the end of August.
