Castlevania is one of those rare games that infuriates you to rage quitting and makes you want to rethink what you do with your free time.....but then 30 minutes later, you're back at it again. It walks that fine line between challenging and frustrating
A hallmark of a good game that is difficult that makes you rage quit, is the desire to return to it, the thought process of how you will attack it when you're holding the controller again.
If you know the patterns and the weapons to use you can beat it in less than 30 minutes. Every year I take a trip to Castlevania to beat my favorite game. 😁
I never got my hands on a copy of 1942, but sure put hours and hours into 1943 on the NES. I love it still. I’ll suggest Wizards & Warriors 2: Iron Sword.
1942 is a gem !! Thanks for recommending Abido !!! Never tried it, didn't know it honestly. Even though i disagree, i still see the quality of your videos and will be fair with your takes when i agree
The obvious ones are Zelda, Zelda II, Super Mario Bros 1-3, etc. However, I'll give an answer to the question while leaving off those games. Mike Tyson's Punchout is head and shoulders above most games, today or otherwise. Dragon Warrior is an awesome first attempt from Enix. Contra is pure adrenaline and awesome good fun. Turtles II the Arcade game is a truly awesome and unique game. One to be played with a friend, over and over. Wizards and Warriors is an underrated gem. Metroid was a game seemingly ahead of its time. Kung Fu is fun personified. Final Fantasy also knocked a home run out of the park with the first game. R.C. Pro-am is high octane to the nth degree. Golf is a HIGHLY overlooked gem that can motivate people to slice off just one more stroke, even more so than other games. A few more gems... Super Spike V'Ball Tiger-Heli is a very well done shooter with the only disadvantage is not having an end. Rygar Guerilla War Rad Racer Ninja Gaiden II Karate Kid (yes... Karate Kid) Operation Wolf Adventure of Lolo Jackal and so many more. I've played and finished (if the game let you) over 500 NES games. I own over 650 and absolutely love the NES.
SID MEIER'S PIRATES - Never heard of or played it. METAL GEAR - Surprisingly, never played it. BIONIC COMMANDO - Never played this one either. MEGA MAN - Played it; never beat it as a kid. MEGA MAN 2 - Played this one as well. Liked it more. 1942 - Heard of it; never played it. Was never a fan of that genre. CASTLEVANIA - Rented it, never owned it. It was hard as a kid. SCREW THOSE STAIRS! SECTION Z - Never heard of or played it. GRADIUS - Played the arcade version, but never the NES version. ABADOX - Never heard of or played it.
Blaster Master? I'm not the greatest at metroidvanias, I get easily overwhelmed by what I can't remember, and drawing maps is tough. I do enjoy the music though.
I miss Shatterhand and Metalstorm in the List I never really understood Sector Z and Pirates i know this both games but i never realy figure out how they work And i like Paridous much more than Gradius
@Fortefyre I tried it veey often but it is this kind of game where I didn't know what to do where I have to go what I do mixed up with lots of stuff to read and anouing sword duells it never had realy catch me up
@Fortefyre I don't have xbox or PlayStation or such things I have atari with a big collection of moduls Nes with a big collection Snes with round about 150 games And my newiest is the Evercade Handheld with 15 moduls he has some PlayStation titels like duke nukem and worms
Good video, however, you said that Mega Man 2 is more difficult than 1 which I highly disagree with. MM2 didn’t take very much time to master, and I don’t think I would’ve ever beaten MM1 without the pause glitch.
1942 was garbage on the NES. Capcom didn’t develop the NES port. It was farmed out to a company called Micronics. Look them up. You’ll be going down a rabbit hole of incredible programming incompetence. Fun fact. The Princess that you rescue in the last stage of Abadox is completely nude in the Japanese version.
I don't personally find that many different aspects, the nes version is more of a fetchquest between the buildings but the MSX version just looks better.
People ought to know, playu on thetrue console... dont play roms... edvery single game i bought and played for real on a CRT is just better and as good as back in the 1990s . and 1980s... people today are too superfiocial and bette rlearn HOW they were limited technologically to code the games and what prowess EVERYTHING after Mario bros 1 is a miracle on NES !!!
I'll give a mention to Mega Man 3 and Kirby's Adventure The former for managing to be good just like with Mega Man 2, introducing sliding, giving us Rush and his jet form, and incorporating Proto Man. Also a rare case of an incomplete game still managing to be a worthwhile experience. As for Kirby's Adventure, thanks to it being designed for beginners it has aged better than multiple other NES titles. The soundtrack is generally nice for NES standards, one of the graphically best looking NES games, it introduced enemy absorbed abilities for this series, and getting a game over lets you resume from the level HUB the level resides in. Besides, it's an overall improvement over Kirby's Dream Land.
The mechanical arm in Bionic Commando was a cool way to make the game different than the other 999 side scrolling action platformers on the NES. Kabuki: Quantum Fighter is another such NES game with a cool gimmick that I recommend.
If you're trying to make your dream game... then think of the Mario sprites. They always help with writer's block and creative issues. Like I think about the amp and the spark in SMB 2, and they're just cool. like add them to Sim City power lines or something? Have them travel on them?
I had been toting NESticle 95 with almost 1000 games around for over 20 years, first on a few floppy disks, then on a zipdisk then on a burned CD rom and then a 5 gb thumb drive until entropy got the best of it about 5 years ago and it stopped working.
This is on point for what you were going for. Your mic is great, your voice cadence nice. The editing is good. Honestly if you did this with other subjects you'd have a solid shot at making it big.
The MSX2 version of Metal Gear is better. While I like the original Mega Man better than 4 and 5, however, it's rough around the corners. Especially since Mega Man will slide around on all surfaces, the rooms right before the boss have enemies, you need the Magnet Beam to be able to traverse through the first Wily Fortress area, and there's no E Tanks. Castlevania 3 is the best out of the three. It's actually Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest that's the worst.
The one that took my heart was 1943 Almost identical on NES, but with killer soundtracks and some other overall slight upgrades Tiger heli was another one I enjoyed, but not nearly to the same extent
Some excellent games but you brought up some I haven’t heard of so I’ll have to check them out! I’m considering of doing some responses to your lists and bring up some games myself. Thoughts on that?
I've heard great things about both of them! Well, Karnov I've heard mixed things about, but Heavy Barrel is one that I hear consistently good marks for!
My top list The Gaurdian Legend: all around great schmup/open world if you like Section Z Airfortress: also similar to Section Z BreakThru: quick game Fire and Ice: Fantastic Puzzle game Solomon key sequel Shatter Hand: Underrated Beatm up Mach Rider: ok racer had way more fun creating board in level editor Rygar: Its Rygar Pinball nes: The thrill of getting to special board and seeing mario Kiwi Kraze: Cant explain Lunar pool: cool underated pool game with interresting mechanics one of a kind Kirby Adventure with the original final boss nightmare. I always thought King Dede was lame, NIghtmare sould have been franchise boss.
Hmm...my own suggestions to a young person who maybe didn't grow up with NES. 1. SMB3, 2. Final Fantasy III with a translation patch, 3. Legend of Zelda but use a guide, the original game came with a guide, 4. Baseball Stars and build your own team, 5. Metroid but again use a guide, 6. Castlevania 3 but play the easier Japanese rom, 7. Dragon Warrior 4, 8. Dragon Warrior 3, 9. Super Mario Brothers 2, 10. Punch Out
I played all the way through Bionic Commando in the arcade. It's a real quarter muncher in the later stages. A few years later I stumbled across the NES version over at a friends house. I didn't know there was a home port of the game. Initially I didn't care for it because it was so different from the arcade, but after a few hours I fell it love with it - and it's one of my favs on the NES. Pirates is one of my favorite games of all times (I've played it along with Pirates Gold and the newest one with the dancing) but I've never played it on the NES. I'll check it out... the sword fighting on the NES looked better than the button mashing mess on other platforms. Does it have the sun sighting mechanic to calculate your longitude?
It does have the sextant method with the sun, but I never tended to use it personally. I kind of cheated, by the time I was old enough to enjoy it, someone had already made a fairly detailed map that layed out what settlements were available on Gamefaqs! But that being said, the only big difference between Pirates! on the NES and Pirates! Gold is a major graphical overhaul. I did do a series slayer about all of the games if you want to check it out! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-02qJ9hAY7WU.html
I had Metal Gear for NES for some years ago. Now I have it on Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection on Switch. And I can told you that Metal Gear for NES is much harder than the original version for MSX. I have finished the original version a lot of times but I can’t finish the tank in NES version. It is so much harder.
On your comments about Castlevania 3. What you just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I've ever heard. Also, you forgot the 3 NES games that should absolutely be played by anyone: Final Fantasy, The Legend of Zelda, and Super Mario Bros. 3
Mega Man 2 harder than MM1? That's a take I've never heard. MM2 is much more accessible and beatable IMO, and the best game in the franchise. Still, you made a great video. As a child of the 80's/90's, it brings back so many solid memories.
I have a video about top 10 educational games on the NES, but I would make a series dedicated to collections for kids or games that are good introductions. I'll put it on the list.
Recommending mega man is weird flex. It’s too hard and will likely put new players off. I hard agree with Mega Man 2. They hit the balance perfectly on that one. I think 1 is much much harder
Metal Gear was the first NES game I ever played, and I sank a lot of hours into that game. It's funny considering Kojima hates the NES version of the game.
I needed 30 years to finally beat Mega Man 1 (still used the pause trick to beat the Yellow Devil). It's not the most difficult NES game I've beaten, but it is the one I'm most proud of. While Mega Man 3 is objectively superior (more moves, more variety, more stages, bosses, etc., etc., like Castlevania III is a lot more advanced than Castlevania)... I just like MM2 more. I'll play it and original Castlevania several times more than the 3rd entry. I think you can objectively look at game x and say it's better than game y, but still prefer game y any day of the week.
Come on men, you really suck then, 30 years to beat Mega Man, I would understand if it was Battleroads, but Mega Man. As for Castlevania, I totally agree with you, original Castlevania has nothing on 3.
Captain Skyhawk is another game you never really hear about that's actually challenging but not so much that it isn't fun. It's also dirt cheap, even a CIB copy of the game is cheap. Definitely one of my NES favorites.
I was in a foul mood when I first played it, but I do want to give it another shake lol. I feel I went into it angry and by proxy it affected my opinion of it.
@@Fortefyre it is frustrating at first, but once you start to memorize enemy placements and get the janky hitboxes on the level geometry figured out it becomes better to play. I managed to beat it as a kid. Took some practice, and patience but I eventually did it!
Subbed! You can play both MGS games on your Xbox One, Xbox One X, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, PS4, PSPRO, and PS5 right now through the Meta Gear collection.
@@Fortefyre That it is! I have it on the Xbox 360 still. I have it on the Series X as well. My fiancee bought it for me because she knew I was a huge MGS fan. What she didn't know was...how badly Konami did Snake in the new port. I merely mentioned it here because I believe it is the cheapest way to experience the first two games of the series.
@@Fortefyre The only thing the Seal of Quality meant was that the publisher paid the licensing fee to Nintendo and the game didn't contain boobs, religion, or the ability to microwave a hamster. (In the early print run of Maniac Mansion cartridges you actually could microwave a hamster. Nintendo was not amused).
Did you just state that Mega Man 2 is harder than Mega Man 1? That is incorrect. Mega man 2 is probably the easiest Mega man game. Mega Man 1 is probably the hardest. Mega man 1 has no saves or passcodes. You have to beat it in 1 sitting if you play the Nes version. Mega man 2 & moving fwd in the series have passcodes for every level you beat.
@@Fortefyre ok cool. When you played Mega man 2 cuz you stated it was harder, did you play it in 1 sitting each time or did you use passcodes when you game overed?
AFter playing the arcade game, I picked it up, preparing to be disapointed by a NES port. They actually did a really good job porting, what should be a 16 bit game, to a 8 bit system.
I read some lore the developers wrote about mega man. They said initially they were meant to work aroubd the house or whatever and its name was Rock. They said that they had to reeprogram him to use weapons because if dr wily and they changed his name to megman. I guess that the lore.
Yeah, I've played it some, but since I had 1943 as one of my first NES games, the nostalgia factor still gives it the edge for me. Also, I think I have a pic of me and a friend playing that Joint Strike when I got my XBox 360. @@Fortefyre
My first NES games that I had played and beat were the Megaman games on a anniversary collection for the gamecube during the early Wii era, had lots of fun with it, felt glorious playing the NES games, was kinda sad thinking that the series was canceled during that point. I had a few NES physical games after that and do have Metal Gear and find it to be very hard.
@@Nintendude. I hope you can as well! If you want to see them all, feel free to check out my Ready Go Gaming Show entry all about Mega Man! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ReckyR33cHE.html
I didn't like Blaster Master, and I think it's because I simply don't like metroidvania map systems. I did enjoy the inside areas, and it did have some satisfying moments, but I didn't like it.
This is a good list. I will definitely check out the shooters i havent tried yet as those are usually fun. One game i always suggest for the NES is The Guardian Legend. It is a fun hybrid vertical shooter/ action game with some very lite rpg elements.
Guardian Legend is absolutely awesome. For anyone who hasn't played it yet, it's one of the best suggestions you'll get. Few games of the era are as interesting.
I'm actually scripting a video ALL about this right now. The 10 videos have kind of taken priority for me. The easy solution, is to buy an AV to HDMI converter. For my streaming purposes, I use a Retrotink5X, which is phenomenal, but it's definitely an investment.
I'm working on a video called "system shock" that covers how to hook it up to common TVs now, I'm expecting to have it out next week. Keep a look out for it!
