I had always had large dogs. However, when I lived in Japan, my landlord would only allow me to have a small one. When I went to the pet store, they only had miniature schnauzer puppies, so I bought one. Since then, I’ve only had schnauzers. Loyalty, intelligence, personality - the schnauzer has it all and then some.
Finally! The Shih Tzus are mentioned! We’ve had them for over 30 years! Don’t know why they are “newly discovered” They are absolutely adorable, love children, great companions…love our fur babies!
From your experience, I'd love to get some advise from you (if you don't mind). I'm 73 and am about to be a first pet owner and am interested on Shih Tzu. I live in an apartment and would love you to give me some advise on smell, shed, pi/po, barking, follow directions and rules, bathing, how often must they eat, Is It true that they are sick very often? Anothrr things, I've often thought I'd very mucho appreciate your advise. Thank you.
Correct, but I think the author was trying to suggest these dogs “no shed” characteristics is newly discovered and understood versus stating that the dog types/breed are just now being discovered. The title is misleading and of course confusing.
Lhasa Apso was discovered 1000 years ago, ShihTzu 400 years ago and you will get shot in Germany for calling miniature schnauzer a new breed ,they were breed around 13th century.
I have a Lhasa Apso so before you post an informative video you may want to spell topics correctly. Then when you were showing your audience what the Lhasa Apso looks like you were showing Yorkies. Yorkshire Terriers. I have one of those as well.
@@janettecarrell I commented on the Lhasa Apso and the Yorkies because I've had one of each. I commented because her video was not showing the correct image for the 2 breeds I mentioned. I've never had a Bichon Frise... I'm sure they are lovely.. but I do not know what they look like. My comment was to let her know when talking about a specific breed she should have the correct image for that breed.
Yes. We had a little shih poo and she lived almost ten years. She died from congestive heart failure last week. She was so sweet, gentle and smart!! I groomed her and she was so easy to take care of. No shedding at all. We're probably going to get another one because she was just perfect for us. Miss her tremendously!!
I just got a Shih Tzu puppy 4.5 months ago. He is the love of my life and so comical the things he does and the looks I get when we're playing are hilarious
We just put our Cairn down. 🥺 When we are use to not having him, I would love to get a Shih Tzu girl. But right now my heart belongs to my shaggy little Smokey Joe.
I have had three Lhasa Apso dogs over different time periods of my life. All three had beautiful coats and no shedding. Great personalities. I now have a cross of Shih Tzus and poodle. A small male and weighs 10 pounds. A great personality. Does not stink or shed.

I did too!!! We had our Maxie for 14 years. He was the sweetest baby!! We had him his whole life till he passed away in Feb. 🥺🥺 Miss him. He was an awesome fur baby!
I don't itch or anything. I just touch a dog and my hand smells like a dog. I had a black cocker bred with poodles to get the black coat, named Bozo. His fur was softer than a poodle, he was highly intelligent like a poodle, without being "high strung". His fur was like a little black lamb. Not all black cockers are intelligent, but man, was I lucky to have such a pooch. He was wonderful. He put up with baths, and stayed clean. He lived to be 17. I miss him to this day.
I have a Westie and he is my bestie! Probably the biggest Westie around. Got him at 10 weeks from a couple who bred Westies. Both parents were large for the breed. Mr. Toby is 32 pounds now. He is now over 16 years old and has no joint problems. His eye sight and hearing is poor now. These problems have only cropped up in the last 18 months. He is a very suspicious and independent guy, but very loyal and intelligent. He and I are very connected, he responds well to signs and my mannerisms. He is a great dog and I would recommend a Westie to anyone who is looking for a loyal companion.
I have a Westie and I’m allergic to him, love him just the same. Westie’s have a great personality. I’m also allergic to Cairn Terriers too but not as much as other dogs. Just in case anyone actually thinks you get a hypoallergenic dog, it’s not all about their coat, you can also be allergic to their saliva and skin.
I had a miniature schnauzer I named him Teddy because he looked like president Teddy Roosevelt. So intelligent he looked like a British gentleman with his beard in salt and pepper color. I died 24 years ago age 15 and I miss him so much to this day may he rest in peace love 💕😘 you Teddy.
I had two Yorkies and they were both non shedders. So playful and great companions. You showed them but didn’t mention them, perhaps because they’re not newly discovered.
I love grooming my lhasa apso...he is so good when it comes to grooming...my baby is adorable..so obedient...love him..the most well behaved but high energy...nd ya he doesnt shed❤️
I have a Coton de Tulear and keep him in a puppy cut. He goes to the groomer every 5 weeks and I brush in between. He's worth it! What a personality. :)
I'm picking up my first Coton puppy next week. I have had 4 wonderful cocker spaniels over the last 30 years but now looking for a smaller companion to accompany me. I think the grooming will be very different but a great way of bonding early on.
It is Lhasa Apso, not Lapsa Apso. We had one who died at 12 1/2 years old from cancer. He was the best, most wonderful dog. He had a very easy coat to care for and rarely got knots in his coat. He did not need brushing daily, more like once a week brushing that was not difficult or time consuming. We kept his coat cut in a shorter cut, but even a bit longer for winter the coat was still not difficult to care for.
Where and how did he get cancer...i m extremetely anxious when it comes to his health..my life he is..can u please elaborate...sorry for asking...but i m lil fanatic when it comes to his health
I have a 12 yo Bolonka Swetna, he doesn't shed. He's very intelligente, fast, he's a great compenion little dog. I love him so much ! I had an old femeal Lhasa Apso before, they are very tender e quiet. I would love to have a York Shire or maybe another Bolonka. Greetings to all dog lovers.
I have had Lhasa apso’s my whole life. It depends on the hair your dog gets. My current baby has hair that is as fine as spiderwebs and she sheds a lot. My one before her, her hair was like cotton candy and did jot shed much, the one before that had the “ right” kind of hair and did not shed. It is impossible to tell when they are pups what coat you are going to get. At 6 months of age the puppy coat needs to be stripped out and then you will know what coat you are going to get. . You need to know how to care for this hair. It is a lot of work! You need to train them from 8 weeks old on grooming. If you do not want to put the time and effort in this is not the breed for you. Myself this is the only breed I will own. Great guard dog, funny and only barks to alert for danger. Very loyal and low key. Shiz tzu are 1/2 lhasa, 1/2 pekingese.
I love my 16 yo Shih tzu. She is very loving and affectionate and hardly barks. I groom her myself (learned over time) for the convenience of never needing to make an appointment and the money savings. In my opinion Shih tzus are the cutest in appearance and personality and are the perfect companion dog.
40 years in the pet care industry. ALL dogs shed, just like all people lose hair daily. Why show the yorkie when discussing Lhasas. None of these breeds is newly discovered.
All dogs have dander and that's one thing that makes people allergic. So make sure to test your choice of dog to see if it makes your allergy act up. Just a tip. I have a Papillon mix and he unfortunately sheds a lot especially when he rolls around on my bed. He especially loves to get under the covers, bat at them with his feet and barks, sometimes he just gets under the covers and barks. I call him my bad little critter when he does it and laugh. Happy trails to you and God bless.
Glad you added the Havanese! And what you said is so true. They are smart, funny and loyal and I wouldn’t have any other breed now that I’ve owned the perfect dog!!
My havanese is 15 he was my service dog . He was just diagnosed with a brain tumor & I’m devastated. I don’t know what I’m going to do but we are doing a bucket list for now
I haven't seen Shorkies mentioned, I can't stand pet hair so no shedding is a must. My little Shorkie is the best dog I've ever had! He's playful and great with kids too.
Another dog that is similar to the Carin but largely unknown is the Austrian Terrier. Great dogs small yet rugged. My two sons picked an Aussie as my oldest had very bad allergies. She was great with them small but able to stand up to two rough boys. They need to be brushed and combed once or twice a week to keep the knots down, bathed once a month or more if they start to smell. The Aussies is not as well known as other small terriers but IMHO they are the best small terrier.
I did like the two videos alot about being small and not shed much. Wonder why you didn't critique the American Eskimo or otherwise known as the German Spitz. I have adored my 2 "eskies". Their not American and not Eskimo types. They have small paws and are not sled dogs. Perfect for anyone with allergies. There are Toy, Miniatures and Standard. One was perfect one had very mild seizures as he grew older. These dogs are trainable very smart, loyal and affectionate. Their fur is more like hair than fur. Fresh cut grass the Eskie will be all green. 2 minutes later all clean. No dander. Owners have to be the Alpha.
I have a Westie and she sheds a lot. But a wonderful dog. And has a lot of skin issues. Which can be smelly until the vet gives her mediation. I also had a Brussels griffin best dog ever.

We have a Havanese that we adopted and he was over vaccinated which led to a grain allergy that caused so many skin problems. We are very careful with his diet and all problems disappear, if he gets any grains the skin problems start up.
No comments about the Brussels Griffon. I got two littermates from a rescue and they are half Brussels Griffon and half Yorkie. A really cute mix. Not much shedding and easily trained. The male has a Brussels red rough coat and the female has more of a Yorkie coat and coloring. I have never swept up any of the female's coat, but more of the male's. They are groomed monthly and brushed a few times during the week.
Thanks for getting back to my and letting me know about this video. Love my schnauzer. There is a schnauzer rescue in 7 Southern US states. Great dogs!
They still do smell. At certain time, when fresh bath which bring strong fragrances from body for couple of days and when it’s time for bath again that dirty smell they absorb for a while after bath. Their mouth do smell. Their ears do smell. Their paws smell from walking all over dirty area. Wet from rain or swim they smell Same thing with cat, litter is killer for me and allergy to their hair. They do smell too. I have very high hyper sensitive smells All do smell. :( missed my last dog 10 years ago I knew I couldn’t have one again. They are best friends you will ever have. And fun to be with. Dogs is love of my life… ❤️
@@trixiesmom5066 always clean their ears, still odor, vet said it was healthy, no sign of infection. You aware dog food do smell strong. No matter if clean mouth or brush. Also someone test put their dog on my bed while I was gone and when I return I could smell dog was around, until I sniff my blanket, I was correct, had to change my bed. :( You have no idea how super sensitive my olfactory nose is… when I comment, I comment the truth nothing else.
@@madhugmk no you don’t have my super hyper sensitive smell. All dogs smell period. Limit access to animals altogether not just dogs alone. If I had partner who have dog. I would ask not share in same bed. Furniture leather no cloth furniture. Toxicant induced loss of tolerance is ZERO tolerance of anything, allergy to life. Nobody should have this diagnosis period unfortunately I have this and that what hurts my access to anything on this earth.
@@Who_hack_here Yup it sucks to have TILT but you are being misinformed about how it works. Its not the smell that's retriggering your Abdiction (opposite of addiction) but the chemicals which are left over by just a drop of drool, dander or sweat from a dog that is causing the issue. The only course of treatment is avoidance as your doctors might have suggested. Smell plays no part, the nose might if chemical is spread through vapor like pesticides, perfumes etc. You don't have a hyper sensitive smell but your body has hyper reaction to chemicals which you are misreading as smell sensitivity.
A dog that doesn't smell, she'd, bark and doesn't need anything? When do we change the society to only intellectual, intelligent, caring, honest, open minded humans?!
Hairless or Powderpuff? I have one puff left of the two I had. I prefer a dog with hair. I would have to put sunscreen on the hairless since they can get sunburned especially here in Florida. I lost the older one a year ago in September. He was so sweet. He would fall asleep in my arms and put his head on my shoulder. Since he died I have dreamt of him doing that and I wake up and remember he is gone. I have a second Puff who has his 13th birthday on New Years Day. I also have two littermates who are half Brussels Griffon and half Yorkie. They are precious and will be 13 in March. The male sheds a little because he has the red rough coat of the Griffon. The female has the silkier coat of the Yorkie. They were rescues I got at 6 months and they have been so easy to live with. I hope you find a Crestie or Crusted as my groomer calls hers.
I have a Mi-Ki. It is a hybred mix of Maltese, Papillion, and Japanese Chin. They have been around since the 70's and everyone thinks he is a Shih Tzu. They average 5-7 lbs.
I need a very small dog as i have a small house , that will get all the love and will get what he - she deserves ,,, one that that comes out in the car and meets all the canine friends or not. Beautiful home that will get so much love In other words Spoiled rotten
To be honest, for now I don't need to adopt a dog because I already have two. But if supposedly I could adopt one, it would DEFINITELY be the Shih Tzu. My own dogs are a mix between Shih Tzu and Poodle.
