Happy Monday and thank you for watching! 😍
This is Part 6 of our series, 10 (COMMA!) OUT OF TEN, where we rate 10 games on a 10 point scale from our two unique perspectives. We hope this helps you get a better sense for our game preferences, and remember.....
1) ratings are subjective, based on our own individual enjoyment of the game, they're not a judgment on game quality or the likelihood you would feel the same,
2) our game preferences are ever evolving and these may change,
3) we respect and would love to hear your differences of ratings in the comments... that's what makes gaming so fascinating and full of joy. There is something for everyone! 💜
Have a great week ahead,
A&M xx

Thanks for stopping by! We're Amy & Maggie aka ThinkerThemer. We're an Australian couple with two very different perspectives of what makes a great board game - Amy (Thinker) is all about the mechanics and enjoys tight, competitive games, and Maggie (Themer) is all about the storytelling and the theme of the game, and the 'world' that the designer is trying to create. Subscribe to our channel to hear us talk about these two elements of a game, and how well integrated we feel these are in delivering a cohesive and wonderful game experience.

Absolute favorite part of this video was Maggie just popping off on Sleeping Gods while Amy is just sitting there like 😐. I love this series so much!

Coimbra, yes!!! This is one of my favorites, and I hardly ever hear anyone talking about it. It's so good! Also, I love this series. I enjoy seeing your collection, your explanation of the games, and the rating system. Thank you for doing this! ☺️

Such a great series - and with so many new games being published, it'll never ever end. 😉Re Cat Lady & Dog Lover: if you decide to pass them on, make sure they go to a loving home that you visit on occasion. 🐶🐱

Yeah Canvas didn't do well with my game group. Certain people were trying to make the best art pieces, but ended up with bad point scoring, those that played for point scoring ended up with bad art pieces. Left everyone at the table feeling unfulfilled, even those that won. Even played with the Reflections expansion, which added flip cards, more goal cards, and even a secound row. We had the same problem even with all the extra stuff.

I played Sleeping Gods with my young adult daughter who likes cooperative games and D&D type stuff. We had a great time on the first campaign and I’m hoping during the holidays there will be time to do another campaign. I would not be as excited to play it solo, but it’s a great way to spend time with her.

Great set of games. I love Canvas. Even backed the 3. part. I think the Expansions make this a bit crunchier. I am glad I passed on Wonderful Kingdom but am intrigued about the World-campaign stuff. Azul, I think Stained Glass of Sintra is best. On Sleeping Gods: I understand 100% everything you both say, rate and feel about it! Love this one as Maggie, but it will never leave my collection. Can't wait for the new one!

I feel the exact same way with Sleeping Gods. I appreciated my time spent with it, but the thought of getting back into it is exhausting, so I'm going to donate it when I get a chance. Libertalia looks right up my alley, but every review so far seems to be kind of middling so I think I will hold off on that. Thanks for another great video!

I feel completely the same way about Cat Lady. I love having it on my shelf (and mine is the deluxe tin in the shape of a cat!), but it is really light and I don't play it often at all, yet I can't imagine getting rid of it either. What to do? Coimbra is one I haven't tried yet, but I'll really have to find a copy to play so I can compare notes with you Amy. Watching more and more of these is making me feel that while I'm still in between the two of you for tastes, after this episode, I'm definitely leaning more towards Amy as a thinker. Hearing your taste on Sleeping Gods (while I've never played it) aligned so much with how I feel about story driven games. Thinking back to My Father's Work (which has a goal to try to reach-YES!) the narrative is again where the game lost me. I think the only narrative game that has given me what I wanted out of it was Forgotten Waters. There's not a ton of gaming in it, but I had the most fun with that one.

I just played Ahoy with a hardcore gamer buddy, along with two other very casual gamers. The casual gamers played as the two smugglers, and they enjoyed that because playing the smugglers is much simpler and more focused, and they didn't have to worry about the area control elements. In fact, one of the smugglers won the game. So while I don't disagree that the smugglers are kind of doing their own thing and not as involved, I think that can be a feature, not a bug, depending on the preferences and experience of your group members.

Coimbra is wonderful so it's great to see such strong comments and scores from you both. For ...Wonderful Kingdom, your non-positives were exactly why I skipped backing the game: despite my wife loving ...Wonderful World she really dislikes games where the engine she builds get directly hurt by other players. Sleeping Gods looks great, but I'm so far behind in my other major games that it would just sit on the shelf unplayed. Look forward to the next episode in this series.

Like both of you, I prefer heavier games, so I tend to cull most of my lighter ones. The lighter games I tend to keep either have sentimental value, or are easy to introduce to younger players. I also really like It's a Wonderful World and try to introduce it to people as often as possible. It's light, easy to teach, fun, and relatively short.

Another few gems in here! With Ahoy - I realized I have a Leder Games problem: Vast, Fort, Root, Ahoy in all honesty you can keep one of these and frankly it is always going to be Root. Sleeping Gods is a masterpiece for multiple different reasons, I will hold on to is until my son gets old enough to play, then my grandkids etc.

Since Amy loves Coimbra so much, I wonder what are her thoughts about the purple track in it. I have only played Coimbra once, and I liked it. With one play, I am no one to say the game is broken, buuuuut I felt the purple track was too powerful due to the travel bonuses. If, while moving, you only got the bonus from where you stop (like Newton), I think things would be different. We played a 4p game, and I was the only one who didn't invest in that track, because I wanted to try something different from the others - also they were not giving me much opportunity with the dice. The jump between me and the 3rd player at scoring was a bit of a joke (I was last). I liked most of the game a lot, but that gave me a bit of a bad taste at the end of the game. What do you think about it?

Hearing Amys rating and reasoning for Sleeping God's 5.5 makes me really wonder about rating games in genres (use whatever word for categorization or classification that applies) you don't like. Is that fair to others? Maybe it is indeed. I'm still getting my head wrapped around a bunch of non-wargamers all the sudden showing up on BGG and rating Advanced Squad Leader a 1 because they don't like war games. Today ASL has a 8.0 rating and manages to land in the top 400 games of all time (it sold over 1 million copies by 1997). There is a huge niche around wargaming and quite simply a ton of folk have absolutely no interest in dealing with fiddlynes of tactical war games or strategic wargames with supply line rules and so forth. Games like GMT's Twilight Struggle and Paths of Glory brought interesting mechanics that appealed to a wider audience beyond the typical war gaming fan base and many non-wargamers enjoyed them greatly (TS for years was highly rated on BGG). Anyway back to this 5.5 thing. Perhaps its just better to sequester yourself away from rating a game in a genre you have no interest playing than to give it any score. This i suppose adds an additional dimension to scoring games but perhaps one that is well deserved. What about games then in your least favorite genres that you actually did enjoy playing? Would they deserve your scoring? Good question but perhaps that particular game crossed over multiple categorizations allowing you to review it without having to sequester your vote. There are tons of games that were written to bridge multiple categories of games but when a game is clearly in a category you simply don't like is it reasonble to toss out a low score and just leave it unscored? Has the Dice Tower been suffering from this by including low scores by those who don't care for the genre of the game being reviewed as well? The clash of diverse opinions across the DT I think has often been apparent. How much of this was due to the "plane" (style of game) or the "pilot" (specific game design within the style of game)? It may well speak to having to provide 2 scores per game (a general category score to clearly show your category bias) along with an attempt to score the game anyway for the specific game design (or a simply I pass on assessing the game itself as I hate the style). Low scores based upon reasons beyond the control of the game designer in genres you simply don't like can IMHO be kept to yourself. Thanks for at least trying to verbalize your reasons behind a 5.5 but why not just refuse to offer a score that would hurt the company if its not even really based upon their hard work. This is where Rahdo would have a field day with your harsh score and say if you don't have anything good to say about a game then don't say anything at all... or something to that effect. To follow up on my comments about Rahdo, he very clearly indicates often that there are certain types of games that he and his spouse simply won't play anymore (I guess he played a few to draw those conclusions early on). While I can't recall his exact words, something about the competitive nature of certain games could lead to animosty among the players that he was simply trying to avoid - this may for example leave out reviews of entire swaths of board games such as area control games. So rather than attempt to review these games at all I think he might be steering clear of reviewing any game that he would refuse to add to his collection. The delima here then is the fact you have 2 reviewers who are often expected to reveiw the same game or perhaps bargain between each other... I'll play that game in a genre I hate if you play that game in a genre you hate.. I suggest that the player who doesn't like the genre/type/category of game simply pass on scoring. I don't trust that you can properly score a game (even if done very well) in a genre you just can't stand without the introduction of a more transparent and complicated scoring card system. Otherwise I fear you may be doing untold damage to the game designer than appreciated than the good (whatever good there is knowing you don't like a game for reasons beyond the designers control...)

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this Sidney. I don't think Sleeping Gods is too far outside of what I could like. It's true I prefer competitive games but lately we've found coops we like. Also the idea of this series is to rate every game in our collection. And I (Amy) buy everything in our collection which means there was certainly a glimmer of hope there. I will say I've since found narrative coop games I like more so perhaps it is a bit more personal to Sleeping Gods. Also in a recent episode Maggie rates some abstract games fairly high which is counter to her preferences. I also get at least one message a week asking why we rate everything so high so I guess it's good for people to see some shade in our differences but find a line that makes sense for us as a couple. Like not featuring war games which we dislike for reasons outside of the gameplay itself. I hope that helps! Thank you for watching. A&M

@ThinkerThemer Thanks for the thoughtful reply. Recently, 3 of my favorite influencers rated Flamecraft 3.5, which was fairly below their average rating for backing campaigns. I foolishly trusted their judgement and rejected backing the campaign only to find them with the KS game months later gushing about how awesome the game was...but the game hadn't really changed between their earlier pre production version and final. Lower than average scores by popular influencers do have an impact on purchasing decisions. With great power comes great responsibility.
