My grandmother's beauty book 'How To Attain and Retain Beauty' makes it's triumphant return! This time I thought I'd share a selection of some of the more outdated ideas I've stumbled across whilst reading this beauty bible of 1930s Australia.

Even though it was condescendingly written, the part about alcohol holds up pretty well from a medical standpoint. I'm in school for it and they really hammer in the drawbacks of alcohol in the long run. I now rarely drink hard liquor.

It’s definitely full of sound advice. A lot of it is also really helpful and unheard of today. Its just delivered with a side of “oh and btw you’re weak and inferior and not pretty enough naturally” 😂
@ConstantCompanion

I didn't think it was condescending. It's true. Women who drink are less than well? Healthy? I'm more fond of red wine than white, white gives me headaches. But yeah. Drinking really ruins your looks and your demeanor.

I enjoyed your take on the tips and tricks. One thing to bear in mind is that young women ninety years from now will passing amused judgement on many of the ideas and practices that we consider cutting edge today. Also, I think maybe the advice regarding the breasts is in large part to help prepare a young mother for breast feeding. Babies are not particularly gentle when they are hungry. ♥♥

I’m sure you’re right! Things change so quickly these days I’m sure even in a decade ideas will have shifted greatly. The book definitely has some great advice. Unfortunately the entire context is basically that a woman’s primary role is to be pretty for men, which is what feels extremely outdated.

17:05 in this time period women who had just given birth were seen as an invalid, and were given the same care and attention, so that is why the lighter diet was recommended. Those foods are very easily digestible and also when you think about it it does seem like a diet for someone recovering from an illness. Also many were worried about meat having harmful effects, just like women today are afraid of eating seafood!

I look forward to doing the opposite video. The book comes from a good place and has some very interesting advice. The rhetoric of the time just results in a delivery that seems extremely sexist to the modern reader!

As far as the diet- many women seem to have (still) trouble with constipation after childbirth. Mild laxatives are actually often recommended. Think about it- your digestive system had to share the room with a tiny human. Now things need to be rearranged and re-sized! Oh, and (delicate souls stop here, please) then there are episiotomies. Makes going #2 even scarier. I had to have c-sections, that wasn't so fun either. So a light diet and having one's stomach wrapped sounds like common sense, really. AND... The agony columns of women's magazines are full of cases where marriages hit rocky ground after baby was born. So it's not always wrong to keep an eye on that front, too. (Communication is a golden tool for your relationships...)

Haha! "Thank you" that was the best response to that boss, the audacity! I would have been way too angry to pull that off, but I'm sure it works better than yelling and screaming or doing nothing. I've also had a man telling me to smile once when I was in the lowest of low moments in my life, and unfortunately I was too young to consider what this actually is, so I felt like I had done something wrong by "forgetting to smile in public" and smiled at him. Thankfully I've grown out of that and now know just how unbelievable it is that someone thinks they have the right to demand an emotion of you like that.
@MissBeeTownsend
@MissBeeTownsend 2 года назад
That’s probably the only time I felt I had a good response and wouldn’t change it if I could do it over. And I was only 21! I usually react like you did to the smiling incident. I feel sometimes it’s a self preservation thing because you’re not sure sure how someone will react to you standing up for yourself.
@larkfly9273
@larkfly9273 2 года назад
@@MissBeeTownsend Definetely, that was an awesome response no matter what age, but impressive for 21. Yes, maybe that's the case with something like the smiling incident, but also you get so baffled you don't know what to do or have the time to think of a response. By the way, on a different note - I know it has some years on its back now, but I have only recently watched it in Denmark - are you familar with the series "A place to call home"? It's Australian and takes place in the 1950's, and I'm asking because it has some spectacular vintage looks, real candy for the eyes? :)

I actually agree with many of the tips. They come from many generations of women and the wisdom they shared building successful families which involved teaching women how to be wives. As far as exercise goes the advice to get a health check has always been for men and women regardless. You an have an underlying health issue which may not be obvious but could kill. The other point is that women rarely needed to exercise because housework was more physical and diets were better. Its not a secret that people have gotten bigger over the years, the aveage 1930s women weighed 130 pounds versus todays average of 170 pounds. As for the goal of most women wanting kids and a family life I dont think thats changed either for the majority of the women in the world. Its just that in the West shows like SATC and mags like Cosmo which sold girls the idea that careers were more important than family life, in order to sell magazine advertising space for the items they wanted women to have careers in order to affoard. See Sue Ellen Browders book Subverted. Basically it turned feminism into consumerism, more choices of what too buy? Sure but that also comes at a price as many have discovered.

Outdated, yes of course but... at the core men still desire a woman that knows how to enhance her beauty and women still desire a man with power. I’m no longer a young man but some of the recommendations from this book could apply to men today. Could they make us more attractive to women?
@MissBeeTownsend

I guess I question how much of that dynamic is innate and how much is socially conditioned.

I’m glad there are men out there who find intelligence attractive! I guess the thing is that not everyone finds the same thing attractive, which makes writing a catch-all instruction manual on being attractive rather difficult. Plus, who wants to pretend to be something and then have to maintain that for the rest of their life 🤷🏻‍♀️

@@MissBeeTownsendDon’t get me wrong. As an artist I’ve been pursuing beauty my entire career. I’ve made a reputation of empowering women and expressing very difficult subjects by making them not only intelligent but beautiful. I use beauty to get away with saying things and delving into the dark corners of our humanity. I take this responsibility very seriously. I will not deny that I very much appreciate a woman that is attractive and well put together. If she is smarter than me... even better

12:50 if you’re single, keeping him SLIGHTLY guessing can be a good thing i feel that a man is supposed to chase the woman not the other way around but you have to be careful bc there is a fine line between keeping him interested and appearing unattainable lol also i firmly believe that the woman is the power behind her man… but i also believe in traditional roles in relationships lol that’s just me lol im not saying that the opposite is wrong its just wrong for me lol

They didn't say any of that very well. There's nothing wrong with not needing to dominate conversations and to be polite and cordial. The more you let the other speak, the more control you have actually. So I do see the use in a lot of this, but it's not place stupid. I can take the back seat to let them show what they have, but don't play stupid. That's just not good. It's not outdated. It's just poorly conveyed. Body language matters. How you treat other people matters. They're just using a bad filter is all. And the diet? Though maybe a tad severe, that's true. Your body's been through a lot. Going back gently isn't a bad idea. You haven't had a baby have you. You come out the other and completely different than when you went in. You're being very harsh with this book. There's a lot of good advice here.
