But rest assured, despite Europe’s popularity as a summer holiday destination, there are still plenty of hidden gems to be discovered. These are not "overrated" places. It's mass tourism that ruins everything. People find a wonderful place. They tell other people how beautiful it is and everyone goes there. At that point, the place is not wonderful anymore

Wanted to add my 2c about the Algarve and the Azores as have traveled both extensively. Did both off-season (April) and.....Algarve was actually fantastic off peak. Great food, relaxed vibe and not too touristy. Azores off season was pissing with rain, sideways, the whole time. It was very cool nonetheless, but it is not comparable to white sandy beaches. The Azores is a more adventurous destination. It is not for a relaxing beach holiday - the beaches are black sand and the Atlantic can get very angry. Can highly recommend staying at the Azores Wine Company in Pico - one of the most uniquely wonderful off-track hotel's I've ever been to. Also just want to mention there are definitely a few Madeira clips in that Azores section - they are not the same place!

People don't do enough research! You have to visit the very popular and obvious places ONCE like Venice, Paris, Rome and the like but then you should venture out to the less known places like Bergamo (Wonderful), Trieste, Abruzzo , Ravenna - those sort of places. You have to do your research first!

I'm going to take issue with the choice of words. None of these places are overrated. They are highly rated and that is what has made them overcrowded, at least for parts of the year. Each of them deserves to be visited but, as you say, at different times of the year. Still, I like all of your alternatives, too. Each of them are excellent in their own right and people will not be disappointed.

Always like that you give people new places and ideas that are relatively unheard of. Unfortunately in the north west of England, these places aren't easy to get to. Yes easier from London and that is unfortunately why the overcrowded is where we will end up

The Algarve is a NIGHTMARE in summer. Very expensive, difficult to park, supermarket queues and packed beaches. This year we're seeing fewer tourists as people wake up to the fact that other places are much better value and more welcoming (Greece, for example). In the Algarve the locals celebratewhen the tourists leave...they put up with them (as they bring money) but there is an undercurrent of resentment. BIG housing problems too for the locals. Noisy, crowded, expensive (except for cheap wine) #avoid

Although the Azores is Amazing, it is not really comparable with Algarve, because they are totally different types of holidays. I would suggest instead to go to "Costa Vicentina" in Alentejo and visit Porto Covo and the crystal clear waters there, or go to "Arrabida" in Setubal and Troia which are amazing as well with emerald crystal clear waters. If you want just the beach and relax, you can go to Porto Santo island in Madeira. It is basically 9km of empty turquoise waters. The reason the beach is mostly empty is because of the lack of accomodation there. So yeah, if you want to go to Porto Santo, you need to book in advance. Last year I spent a whole week in Porto Santo, and it was amazing. No crowds, and in the best beach of Portugal.

I won't tell you guys where, but as someone that has been to over 40 countries and most of Europe, there are A LOT of amazing places in Europe that most tourists never see. That's the sweet spot, if you're willing to put in a bit of extra effort. Amalfi coast is the most disappointing place I've ever visited. Positano was AWFUL. Worth visiting once to see Pompeii, Herculaneum and Mount Vesuvius - and possibly Napoli if you're brave.

What makes you say visit Napoli if you're feeling brave?🤔 I just ask as I went years ago (when I was 8); i remember it being busy and quite rough round the edges, but I honestly don't remember too much (It was 20 years ago after all...). I'd be interested to hear what your experience of Napoli was like if you don't mind sharing 😊 and what made it difficult!
@CaptCanuck4444
@CaptCanuck4444 Месяц назад
@@sleepybubbi9638 There is a lot of organized crime in Napoli, and a lot of petty crime as well. People generally can be very aggressive for trivial reasons, inconsiderate and rude, dirty (like throwing garbage everywhere) and will take the opportunity to cheat you if they can. Southern Italy has lots of beauty but unfortunately it's quite poor and many people will take advantage of other people if given the opportunity. Case in point, a taxi driver dropped off my mother in law and raced away with her luggage as soon as she set foot outside the taxi - with the door still open and her screaming. We only got the bags back (with no apology) by waving down another taxi and forcing him to radio the original driver with the threat that we'd call police and had photos of them both (a bluff).
