Hello Tom. Is the meaning of "a fortnight ago" and "the week before last" the same or is there a difference? That was a very interesting lesson. I didn't know "the week before last", "the other day", "a while ago" and "back in the day". And for practising: "Last week I had a day off. But it feels as if it was ages ago." Can I say it that way?
@EatSleepDreamEnglish
@EatSleepDreamEnglish 6 лет назад
Yes, great example sentence. Well done Marisa Gallati! In regards to your question, I'd say "a fortnight ago" is quite specific whereas "the week before last" is more vague. They both mean roughly the same amount of time ago though. Hope that helps.
@marisagallati5648
@marisagallati5648 6 лет назад
Thank you for answering. Yes, it helps, but first, I had to look up "whereas" in my dictionnary :-). I imagine that a fortnight means "about forteen days ago" and the week before last means "any time in the week before last week". Greetings from Switzerland.

In Polish "the day before yesterday" it's just one word "przedwczoraj" przed (before) wczoraj (yesterday). So why English say "the day"...not just beforeyesterday it's clear that it's about the day :) It's like to say "one hour of time" it's clear that one hour it's about time.

@michaeleasler5249

"Back in the day" is a phrase I utterly detest, because it is grammatically incorrect and exposits nothing for the listener. Why not say "Back then" or "Back in those days" instead? I think it is because the speaker is uneducated and cannot accurately establish when "the day" actually was (usually a period of time, not an actual day). If they could, they might instead say, "back in the eighties" or " during the Korean War" or provide some other referential antecedence. In the USA, this has gained popularity over the last decade, especially with intellectually lazy who want to appear hip or cool. Do yourself a favor and avoid using it!

hi....me again Tom I got a inquiry to make,is all about something still confuses me is on word "would"usage so I'll give u an example... she said she wouldn't come! would that mean,,,she said she will not be coming?or she said she didn't want to come? what do I have to get it....as future in the past of will... I'll go, I'll see?or the past of want? hope u LL bring some light into this.... cheers mate
@EatSleepDreamEnglish
@EatSleepDreamEnglish 6 лет назад
Hi narcis, good question. In this example you are using reported speech and therefore we 'back shift' the tense. This means that when someone says something in the present tense we put it into the past tense to report. For example 'I am going to Italy' becomes 'She said she was going to Italy.' So in your example 'would' is the past tense of will. Does that make sense?
@narcisapostol4098
@narcisapostol4098 6 лет назад
+narcis apostol hi Tom....I thought of giving u better example...of two WILL I mean! I think it will be fine weather! reported...I thought it would be fine weather! now... I think car won't start!reported...I thought car wouldn't start... so both reported closes have the WOULD word... good! first is would of future auxiliary(will),second,is the verb (will-would-would)... now back in my sentence:he said he wouldn't come!, could be both ...the auxiliar as well as the verb.... I think which puzzles me,... thanks ones again

Good Morning ! I was wondering about these new expressions related to the past.... Many of them can be use with the simple past and past continuous and it makes me confused. You can definitely say "the other day". Example sentence "The other day I went to the beach". It is not correct to say "are ages that I don't go to the cinema". I'm not entirely sure what you're trying to say in this sentence? Maybe "It's been ages since I've been to the cinema"?
