Thanks for debunking the myth that crochet is not for men. When I retired, and was alone after losing my wife, I learned to crochet for a way to handle my grief, and as an outlet for my creativity. That was in 2010, and I have never looked back. Over 500 projects later and now at age 78, I'm still crocheting. Hats for charity and baby blankets for our church's ministry are my " thing" now. Unfortunately, arthritis has slowed down my productivity, but I still get in a few rows every day. ( You've taught me all about amigurumi and I am loving it, too. Just have to work slower and fewer rows at a time! Thank you!)

Are you kidding?!? I LOVE hearing about men that crochet! Especially since I'm the only one in my family or circle of friends that crochets. It's great to find other people to talk to about projects, issues, and what not that truly understand what crocheting is all about! And I also understand not being able to do as much as you used to. I don't have arthritis, I have carpal tunnel, in both wrists, and my fingers tend to cramp up or go numb if I do too much at once. I will crochet for 30mins to an hour, then set aside my project to do something different.

Hello from Montreal ... So nice to read your lines .... well in the 70's I was almost of legal age, when I have learned to crochet, from my now late, Auntie Rose, she taught me the basics of crochet, it's been 53 years, no regrets but joy, calm... Now that I'm retired, I have all the time I need to crochet, and include this art, in volunteering with people in oncology care... because I myself, am a cancer survivor... and the strange look, of others in the waiting rooms, does not affect me at all.. it belongs to them.. so @jimflack9462 Bravo to you! Have a wonderful day ... :-)

I remember hearing many years ago that Rosie Greer (the famous athlete) did needle point, I thought it was strange at the time but never saw any thing wrong with it. I actually thought that it was brave of him to share his skill with the world and make it OK for other men.

Not sure if it would be helpful enough for your arthritis or not, but if you haven’t already, you might consider trying an odyssey hook. I struggle with hand pain as well, and I’m able to crochet longer with the odyssey hooks (and my hands don’t hurt a lot afterward like before.) It took me a minute to get to them (I hold them from the middle/top area, rather than from the end of the hook, which helped me adjust to them.) Thought I’d mention in case you haven’t tried them. (If you sign up for emails from furls, they’ll let you know when they’re in stock, if interested.) =)

This particular male veteran crochets. I was curious, so watched a youtube tutorial. I spent under £10 on a set of hooks and some yarn and went right at it. I struggled so badly getting my tension completely wrong, so I asked a relative (who loves to crochet) for some advice. She invited me around and i sat in front of her and literally mirrored her actions. From that moment, I had it. I'm still a little bit messy, but I'm happy to be messy because its so mindful and I'm making *something* and that is what counts for me.

My mom taught me to crochet when I was 4. A few (ok, several 🙄) decades have passed since then. I've made things from countless afghans, stuffed animals (long before they had their own name), a sweater, doilies, to some fancy glass covers (for tea parties, to keep bugs out of your glass) for my stepmom. Unfortunately I haven't crocheted in over 11 years. I was struck with some serious medical problems that kept me from being able to hold a hook. I'm now diving back in and my mind is blown 🤯. I never thought I'd see so many people involved in this craft. It's a great thing to see - people that are not glued to Facebook, etc. but instead have a crochet hook in their hand! Love it

I learned to crochet in fourth grade, during a very rainy week. A classmate brought in a crochet project she'd been working on, and the entire class was fascinated. We all wound up acquiring crochet hooks and some yarn, and crocheted little projects when we couldn't go outside for recess. I crochet only sporadically, but have made assorted hats, afghans, a tiny pink outfit for my granddaughter, and a snood for part of a medieval Halloween costume (a snood is kind of like a hair net, but usually decorative). Right now, I'm crocheting a ripple afghan for my brother's birthday. I don't crochet very fast, but put in four hours a day, 5-6 days a week, because his birthday is rearing up in a few weeks. With any luck, I'll get it finished in time.

I learned crochet from a class one of my classmates taught (we have special classes we take which includes student led classes each trimester) and I was struggling lol. But I got the hang of it and started crocheting more in the summer. I got to visit my great aunts who are skilled crocheted and happily gave me yarn, hooks, and some of their projects. I even got to visit one of my great aunts sewing shop and pick different colors of yarn I wanted. (My grandparents and family live overseas and my great aunts and uncles live in the villages which is a 2 hour drive from the city my grandparents live in. Let's just say...I had a load of bags when we came back home!) I'm trying to learn more knitting sitiches for now, but I am very happy I get have clusters of yarn and hook in my house now :)

I'm a man who has been crocheting for over 40 years. My grandmother used to crochet. The only things I ever saw her crochet were doilies, baby booties, and chevron/zig-zag pattern blankets. She never taught me to crochet, but I used to be fascinated watching her crochet. Years after she passed, I was in a store (I think it was a Woolworth's) and saw a little booklet teaching beginning crochet. I think it cost about 50 cents. I decided to buy it and try to learn to crochet like my grandmother. I have been crocheting ever since. The first major project I ever finished was a blanket using the Tunisian crochet technique. I still have that blanket over an easy chair in my den.

By chance, about 15 years ago, I saw a pattern in a magazine for a crochet cardigan, what a revelation! I gave up knitting, made myself that crochet cardigan and I've not stopped crocheting ever since 😁 Have you ever tried Tunisian crochet? I took that up, thanks to RU-vid, early last year after I was made redundant at 60, it saved my sanity until I was fortunate enough to find another job, and now I crochet normally and the Tunisian way in equal measure. Amigurumi is something I have not tried yet, but it's on my bucket list! I love your videos, thank you for the great content 👍

I've been crocheting for over sixty years and I learn new things every week! Ive made toboggan hats for homeless people for thirty years and just passed fifty thousand! Started a charity with "projects" all over the world. We've sent hats to Pakistan, Ukraine and have groups working in all fifty states and eleven countries! I've made doilies just to prove that I can, but my favorite things to make are snowflakes! I made five hundred in a summer for an eccentric relative who didn't like them once she got them. I then packed them up and sent them to a friend in Ohio. She sold every one of them! I got a lot of money for my trouble and made more!

I went into a yarn store and picked out lots of beautiful yarn. The lady that worked there asked was I was knitting. I told her I crochet and she said ‘you can’t crochet with this yarn’. I laughed before I realized she was serious. She said they only sell knitting yarn 🙄 So I thanked her and told her I’d never been in there and thought I’d check it out. Then I asked why she thought that. She said most yarn is only good for knitting. I was dumbfounded. So I left it all there and told her I’d spread the word to other crocheters not to shop there since they don’t think crochet is worthy. I was plssed

Thanks for debunking that Crochet is just for older women. Both my kids learned in their teens. My son is ALWAYS crocheting. When he graduated from college his professors gave him a book about the history of crochet as he always has yarn and a hook with him. Also, it's so true that good hooks will last a LONG time. I have crochet hooks that I inherited from both grandmothers while I don't know how old they are they're stamped in the metal that the cost is 10, 15, 20 cents.

I did hear “ Only old women crochet” and “ Men don’t crochet”. My grandmother taught me how to crochet a chain, and sc when I was 6. My next door neighbor who was 84, taught me dc, trc, and how to do so in the round. I taught my self the rest from books. I am now 48, and a grandmother. Both of my daughters crochet they are 26 and 28. My grandson is 3 and taking an interest in my craft. My father and little brother crochet. It is a family thing that no matter where we are, when Football season starts, we break out our crochet. I crochet year round now, but do switch my materials to fit the weather, so winter and fall I crochet fall and winter things and spring and summer I do the same. I am glad you did this video. The one myth I found about about just in the last year. I had only ever done doilies and afghans and dish scrubbies. But recently I got back into crochet and I wanted to use up my yarn. I had to investigate what else I could do with it because you can only have so many afghans. I’ve branched out into Amigurumi, sweaters and washcloths. One myth I thought was true was you weren’t to use knots in your work other than maybe the slip knit at the beginning. With Amigurumi I knot everything I can and even in other works now I’ll knot to join yarn.

And crocheters who also knitted needed to hide their second craft for some reason. I hate the comparison between knit and crochet too. They simply make DIFFERENT fabrics. Each fabric is good for it's own purposes. One isn't better than the other overall, they are different with different drape or structure. I usually tell folks who all what to start with to start with knitting because it takes more patience, but that it's also okay to start with crochet. And then I try to explain the differences between the 2 and what they should think about, keep in mind, and focus on.

I started out with crochet, but I didn't have the patience at the time, and looming was easier for me to learn. However, I'm back into crocheting again, and it is soooo much easier to unravel a mistake in crochet than on the loom. Oh, it's so annoying on loom when you don't catch it right away! It takes a long, very careful process to fix it, or your whole project is pretty much done for. I've made multiple mistakes with crochet, and it was simple to fix.

@LePetitSaintCrochet you're welcome! I do love looming, but for anyone who wishes to start out, I recommend lots of patience. Hats and scarves are easier to learn. I wanted to learn crochet though because though looming is very close to crochet without a hook, there is a lot more arm movement so if one has a bad shoulder like I do, it can be tiring after a while. And from what I've experienced thus far, yes, you can make pretty much anything on loom that you can with crochet, but I notice more variety that's easier once you have the basic stitches down in crochet.

I agree, i think crochet has gotten more popular thanks to the easy access to tutorials and patterns. Back in the day, you might not have known anyone who made anything but blankets and sweaters. You wouldnt even think of making something else, and maybe you just didnt see the appeal in that. But you see someone teaching how to crochet something you want? Something unique and rare? Hot dog sign me up! Plus the learning curve is so much lower now. It helps the beginner see the true potential and belueve they could accomplish ut if they wanted. "Older" crochet and knitting was very dau ting and confusing, and it was hard to understand how to master it. Amigurumi is on my mind. I would have assumed it was hard, but all the tutorials make it so m7ch easier to understand how each stitch works. Its great! Plus close ups on stitches! You can learn a hundred new stitches just watching short clips of people doing them! Not limited to learning from someone in person or figuring out how to read books. Its great, plus so CUSTOM. Cant be mass produced. Very appealing.

Haha, the "crochet is not for men" reminded me of a story I read somewhere A young guy decided to learn to crochet and make a scarf for his girlfriend, as a birthday present. So he bought the yarn and borrowed a hook from his grandma And he decided to use the time aboard the bus for his commute to and from work for it, so that it could be a surprise for her So once he was crocheting and struggling a bit with the yarn, and a big burly man sat next to him. And was glancing at his work from time to time. The guy was mentally prepared to be judged for his choice of hobby, but when his neighbour finally spoke, it was to say, "hey dude, try using 3mm hook, it'll be easier!" 😄

It's nice to see the whole ''It's not for men'' thing debunked like this. I'm a trans guy that taught myself how to crochet like 3 months ago, and I sure hate it when people consider it a girl hobby. My mom volunteers in a retirement home and the women there keep commenting how weird it is for a young (24) man to crochet, tho they also love the things mom showed em I made. I dont mind them, they're clearly from a generation where it is very much a woman thing, but I appreciate there being people to publicly debunk things like this so more people stop having this outdated stereotype stuck in their heads

I have to take umbrage at the limiting my WIPS. I am very ADHD, and if I don't have at least three/four WIPs going at the same time- none of them will get finished. When I get tired of one- I switch to another one. Even if it's the same types of stitches- the different colorway and project type will trick my brain into thinking it's something new and different. When I get tired of that one- I will switch to the next one (or back to the first one). This way- all my WIPs get a little love, and all will be finished... some day...
