Here are 3 ways I got an internship during my college life : 1. Cold Emailing (IIM Ahmedabad) 2. Internship Websites (Urban Company) 3. Personal Network (E&Y) And yes cold emailing works. I sent nearly 60 cold emails. Got 5 responses, all NO. I sent 55 follow up emails. Got only one response, a YES! And that's how I landed an internship at IIMA during my final year :D

I can surely support the alumni point. I run a small Finacial consultancy business and around 90 percent of interns that I have employed are from my own college. It is a weak point where we think let's Gove smthng back to the institute that gave us so much

In internshala , many internship only focus on earning money by help of intern. They only care about how you could collect funds for them. I don't think internship means collecting funds for them . We are newbies and learners not any employee who will generate lead or something for those internship.
