When you have your lovely machine, your mat, rulers rotary cutters and all, I feel my old pointy tweezers is the tool I cannot be without. I use it for picking out stitches after I've cut them with the seam ripper, and to lift little pieces of thread off my sewing.

Great ideas, thank you for sharing, I guess my favorite quilters tool is my sewing machine. It's 23 years old, still works like a champ. I also like self-adhesive sandpaper tabs for the bottoms of my rulers. I really enjoyed your tutorial. Thank you.

Always looking for tips and tricks! What's funny here is I have every single item you have except for the pink clamps mine are black from the dollar store years ago. Great minds think alike. Cluck cluck sew sells the tape on her website of the same name. The newer rolls of blue tape are letting me down and not sticking at all I don't know if it's because of the starch so I'm going to give that other tape you mentioned a try. Thank you for the video you're very good at it.

I call that big honkin bevel the "Devil Bevel" ! I cover mine with a machine mat, but tape works great, too. My Juki Kirei has this, my other machines do not. I prefer to piece on my other machine for that reason. Even covered, the hump is a pain (for me).

My favorite quilting tool is probably my longarm machine. I just wish I could churn out quilts faster than I do now but I tend to go for more complicated and large projects. But there really are a ton of wonderful notions that we are spoiled with now! So many to choose from. I’d say my second is likely my seam ripper😖🤣. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you for the tips. I also enjoy reading the comments from viewers. I also have a problem not holding my ruler well enough so it has slipped when using the rotary cutter. I purchased the sticky circles and that really helped. Now I’m wondering about the rulers another viewer mentioned that don’t slide…have you used them yourself? I am getting up in years and she said the numbers were easier to read. Would love a review on rulers (maybe you’ve done that already?). New to your channel and will search. Thank you.

Hi Susa! I have not used the other rulers. Great idea to do a review on rulers! I’ll put that on my list. I have used medical tape on the back of one of my rulers to help keep it from slipping. I have also use the sticky circles and those help as well. What helps me the most is to put a 5 pound hand weight on the far end of my ruler when cutting. You could pick up a hand weight at a thrift store for a nominal cost or you could use a large heavy canned good just as well. The hand weight was recommended by Donna Jordan of Jordan fabrics on RU-vid. Thank you for commenting!

I use painters tape, and draw lines on it with pens, no need to buy special tape. I use sticky tape loops, sticky outside, to non-slip my rulers. Easy to remove if in the way and cheap to replace.

The best mat is the Martelli Mat. Amazing quality and they have consistent markings from the top, the middle and the bottom Also their nonslip rulers are so much better than those cheap plastic rulers that you were using. You don’t need to be carrying a dumbbell to hold the ruler down when you’re using the Martelli ruler. And their rotary cutters are far more superior and a much better angle for your wrist Nancy’s notions makes a fabric guide that you can stick onto your machine so that you can sew 1/4 inch or a half inch or 5/8 of an inch instead of constantly purchasing masking tape or painters tape

I’m in the market for a new 2 1/2” x 18” ruler so I’ll check Martelli out for sure. I’m definitely interested in the fabric guide as well. Missouri star quilt company carries Nancy’s notions so I’ll check out their website. Thank you for all your wonderful recommendations!

I noticed you use 3M tape. That firm has a plant on the River Schelde near Antwerp that has just been convicted by the Belgian state for polluting the water there no end. We here in Europe (I live in Holland) therefore look at 3M with some reserve. All this not your fault, of course! Nice tips!👍

@@DKohnDesigns Oh no, I wouldn’t have any ideas… I only have ***turns around to count*** 74 … 74!!! Different quilting and crafting rulers/acrylic templates 😂😂😂😂 Yikes! Ok, yes, I’m addicted to stupid pieces of acrylic. gosh…..There’s so many types: strip/stripology rulers, square, straight lines, circle cutters, big ones, long ones, flat ones (more for paper craft), metal edge/metal rulers, strap cutters, curves, seam allowance built in or added rulers, bias cutting rulers, other “helper” rulers likes pockets, box corners, quilting/freemotion pattern rulers, pattern templates “rulers/shapes/pieces”, “glittery just because they’re glittery” rulers🤗
@DKohnDesigns
@DKohnDesigns Год назад
@@cazkiwinz4300 Wow! That’s quite a selection. Are there any brands of rulers that you suggest I review? So far, I’m thinking of the Omni brand, creative grids, and Fiskar’s. I intend to review one long ruler and one square ruler for each brand.
@cazkiwinz4300
@cazkiwinz4300 Год назад
@@DKohnDesigns That’s the thing… a ruler is a ruler is a ruler… is just a piece of acrylic in the end … I don’t think brand really makes a difference to it being a handy piece of plastic with numbers on it, except for aesthetics (all aqua or pink rulers to match their room.. or glitter rulers cos… purdy!) or brand loyalty people (tho to be fair, there’s a lot of that in our world haha or Tula Pink etc wouldn’t have the rabid fan bases they do! 😂). What IS good is the different sizes they offer.. and what they charge for it…like anything, prices have skyrocketed over the last 2-3 years and I’ve been guilty of spending $150 on a ruler I would have scoffed at the price of before… (Yes, I’m looking at you XL Stripolgy ruler! 😂). IMHO…..Once you have a 12x6, 24x6 and a smaller 4x4/5x5 or 6x6 (and/or maybe a 6x1/12x1),… buying other sizes are just luxuries … but the ones that have extra functions are the ones that are becoming more useful… like rivet placement templates, rounded corners, sized zipper boxes, cutting shapes or stitching/quilting shapes that you run your machine foot down against, etc…l think those are the ones that will grow the market. Then there’s the storage for your collection: wooden ruler holders,pinboards, hooks, over door hangers, etc… yeah, that’s another whole ballgame! (Isn’t it crazy how some people spend almost more on storage solutions for their hobby’s notions and bits and pieces…. than the actual craft itself? ***hides*** 😝😂 Sorry, I could rabbit on about these topics forever ‘cos I love it… so I’ll definitely be watching for your video! Also sorry I’m not much help in brands/styles… as I said, since a ruler is just a ruler, I’m more interested in what TYPES are out there for me to expand my collection to make things easier rather than just what straight size ruler brand to buy… most people just go and get them from the local quilt store when they first start out anyways, don’t you think? Like one of the first things they buy… so most of the people that watch you would already have at least a basic few rulers… but would like to know what ELSE they could get to level up their game? 🤔 Seeing Creative Grids 12x12 against Omni’s 12x12 isn’t going to tell you much except they’re both 12x12 squares and one is yellow and one is white and … well… yeah… nothing… and also… if they have the Fiskars 12x12.. they don’t need another 12x12…but they don’t know that there is such a thing as a Creative Grids Bias Binding Simplified ruler and getting that 21x2.5 diagonal cut ruler is going to change their (bias binding) life! IMHO anyways, as I said, but I’m here for all of it, whatever you do! Sorry for rambling 😉

Now...left-handed tips?! Lol New quilter here, but nothing too left-handed for ease of ruler cutting. Can you create a bed runner? Looking for a good one to use for the guest bedroom 😉
@DKohnDesigns
@DKohnDesigns 2 года назад
Good questions! I’ll keep left-handed Quilters in mind from now on. Jenny Doan of Missouri Star Quilt Company is left handed and gives tips in her videos for the lefties out there. If you haven’t seen her Videos, you might want to check them out. As far as a bed runner, I’ve never made one. But that’s a great suggestion! I will look into that and see if I can put together a bed runner pattern sometime this year. I will be coming out with several patterns over the next couple of months and I think some of them will be able to be modified to make a bed runner too. Thank you for watching!
@dcwatashi
@dcwatashi 2 года назад
Martelli makes a left-handed rotary cutter it just takes a little bit getting used to but it’s far superior because it is truly ergonomic. It keeps your elbow at your side which is a better way to cut. They have a lot of videos I’m probably not explaining it that well The Crafty Gemini is an excellent RU-vid channel and she will often show you examples of how to cut left-handed
