With advancements in battery technology, handheld dive lights become smaller and more usable. Here are my 10 reasons for a handheld dive light in 2020 - Will I switch? Find out if I really dump my canister light and switch to a handheld dive light, in this case the new Halcyon Flare EXP. I talk about handheld divelight in general, but this is more a 10 reasons to buy the Flare EXP, since there are numerous handheld dive lights out there and the Flare EXP was the one I checked out in this video.
Spoiler Alert: I was really amazed what this light is capable of!

So... what’s your opinion on handheld lights?
@touchdowndiver
@touchdowndiver 3 года назад

You confused me with the title, because you appear to be suggesting a hand-held light to replace a hand-held light. I think you mean getting a self-contained battery light to replace a canister battery light. That aside, excellent points.

@@DoktorBEN I would be interested hear your thoughts on undersuits and layering. Right now I am thinking whether to go for an electric heating vest solution, or simply add more layers like the fourth element x-core for extreme conditions. Thanks!

I used handheld primary lights almost exclusively for the last 6 years. Never lost it 😅 Started with the Halcyon Explorer Mini, later the Original Flare Handheld. Love it. I „modified“ the handle to eliminate the entrapment Risk. I run a bungee over the lighthead from the top of the handle to the Open end. This way, I even have a makeshift thumb loop.

Hi. This is a good and balanced review. Keep up the good work. I have a few questions: What are the main differences between the Flare EXP and the standard Flare 2.6aH Handheld? The price of the Standard Flare is way more expensive than the Flare EXP. However, The Technical specs seems to be the same for both in terms of light output and battery life. So, what are the differences?
@DoktorBEN
@DoktorBEN 3 года назад
The standard is larger while the specs are more or less the same.

Thanks for the video DoktorBen! I have been thinking about upgrading my primary technical diving light; in your opinion would this make a good primary or would you only recommend it as a backup? I use a BigBlue tl 4800 right now but the light isnt as hot in the middle and so isnt as good for signaling as the halcyon (it seems).
@DoktorBEN

Well... what kind of dives do you plan to do with it?
@michaellambert2976
@michaellambert2976 3 года назад
I think your point is that as long as the burn time for the light is more than my anticipated dive time, this light would be a good primary light choice, correct? I am a wreck diver; most of my dives wouldnt exceed 2-3 hours.
@DoktorBEN
@DoktorBEN 3 года назад
Yes... maybe plus an appropriate reserve. If you dive wrecks you might use the high setting more likely than in a cave. In that case, the burn time might be too short.
@ronsnijders3636

Thanks for this video, Ben! Since I've only started diving a few months ago, but have been looking at tec as something to pursue when I'm a bit further in my journey, I've been wondering for a bit how relevant canister lights still are. And wondering if I should get one or not :-) I currently use a Metalsub XRE-1250R on a goodman handle, and it appears to have many of the pros of this light. The burn time is similar (at least the advertised burn time, but with a 37Wh battery I guess it should be in the ball park in actual use, I haven't pushed it yet...) It's a bit bigger and a little heavier, but on the goodman it's balanced under water. One big pro is that, even though it charges in the same way as the Halcyon, you can replace the battery if you want to, and Metalsub offers spares. It also comes with a 12V car charger, so you can top it off during a surface interval. One of my favorite things about it is that it comes in at just over one third of the price of the Halcyon. Adding the aftermarket goodman still keeps it under half. Have you had a chance to look at that one by any chance? In all honesty, mine had to go back for warranty after three dives (bad battery). But I guess a dud can happen with any brand, and many people I know are quite happy with their Metalsubs.
@DoktorBEN
@DoktorBEN 3 года назад
No, unfortunately I haven't had a peek on this one. A changeable battery is a pro. I talked with Mark Messersmith (Halcyon COO) about this some month ago. He told me that Halcyon is working on this feature and had some prototypes already. However their philosophy is that they don't release it, if it does not work perfectly and will stick to the non-changeable version until then. But anyways, if it has the same features and comparable burntime, it should be fine. You can run a burn test on it to see, how long it really lasts. Would love to read your results!

This was really great review. Actually other topics on this channel are nice and very informative with nice approach. I'm just wondering about specs of this torch. There is LUX units mentioned on Halcyon site and most of other torches are specced with Lumens. I'm sidemount diver and I wan't to get rid if canister light. Cable IS really annoying and as I will add cable for heating vest - everything become one big mess. I'm trying to compare BigBlue TL8000p light with this Halcyon in video. Price range IS quite similar for these two but impossible to compare lumens with lux without physical torch in hands.. What do you think? Would Halcyon flare exp work in green murky and dark Baltic sea waters?
@DoktorBEN
@DoktorBEN 3 года назад
Lux is more practicable for real world applications. There are smartphone apps that can measure the illuminance. You can just measure the BigBlue and compare to the EXP. Still I have no doubt it‘ll work well in the baltic!

Hey Ben, nice video. Got a quick question, I’ve heard that Halcyon lights are not made for salt water in mind. My instructor told me that the magnetic switch failed super fast when using the light in salt water, and they did contact Halcyon and Halcyon told them that the lights are not tested in salt waters. Did you use the light in salt water at all and notice any of this? Thanks.

Dropping the light is my #1 fear. I don’t have a can light, but can definitely appreciate what the cord brings to the game as far as functionality dispute the complication of donating air. What about varying the light on your left hand so you have your right hand available to donate? Wouldn’t that solve the issue of entanglement?

@janinacooper4199
@janinacooper4199 3 года назад
I’d be terrified to drop it for the price, at least with a cable it won’t be lost. :-) That is my main reason for the canister light. Not having to manage the light cord would be handy but... Mainly the argument for getting the handheld light would be not having the failure point of a light cord. Nice video, I have heard about divers losing their handheld light while clipping it off or due to the breaking caveline as you mentioned. It just happened to my friend when they had a buoyancy issue and she had to help her fairly new dive buddy, not to shoot to the surface. That was about 6 weeks ago but if the light had been found, it was not returned.
@DoktorBEN

Yeah that’s my main concern, too. That’s why I would put it in my pocket instead of clipping it off permanently.

Kerwin just remember GUE and Halcyon have the same President/CEO. I suggest you do your research using the Flare EXP as a baseline. @DoktorBEN
@DoktorBEN 3 года назад
Yeah that’s true especially when you look at Mares/SSI. When it comes to Halcyon/GUE I always had the impression they honestly try to keep it separately, what I personally think is a very good idea - maybe not in regards to marketing but certainly when it comes to credibility.

@@DoktorBEN Thanks for your openness I am an SSI Instructor and that’s why I will not review any Mares product in my channel as I feel it could be taken as a conflict of interest
@DoktorBEN
@DoktorBEN 3 года назад
Yeah but there’s still a difference, cause Mares and SSI are both part of Head and act together on the market. That’s not the case for Halcyon and GUE that are kept separately. I understand your point but since I do not only review Halcyon, I say also negative things about Halcyon AND other manufacturers seem not be really interested in their products being reviewed, I don’t feel being in a conflict. Btw. I’m also CMAS instructor which has no ties to anyone like BSAC. Does this make me more credible than I am? Most likely not because still, Light Monkey (or whoever) could secretly pay me to something good about their stuff or negative about other manufacturers products.

I understand your point. However, I personally don’t have any ties to Halcyon or any other manufacturer except teaching for the same agency. I know that often people claim GUE instructors just like Halcyon, which is not true, at least in my case. I never experienced any pressure from Halcyon, Jarrod or Mark when it comes to advocate for Halcyon as a GUE instructor. They separate it very well. Still, GUE is not the only agency I teach for. Any other manufacturer is welcome to send me things to review. For me personally and as instructor, it’s very important to be independent and just tell my honest opinion.
