Te Reo Māori is not important to most Kiwis as its not their heritage, can you speak Dutch my heritage?. None of this really matter as we are all human beings, NZ was never a "country" before Europeans it was various lands occupied by often waring Maori tribes. Hell even the Treaty of Waitangi was not actually signed by all tribes, at some point we need to celebrate the past but move on.
It is a genuine pleasure to hear someone talking about what is great about Aotearoa (New Zealand). Thank you from the very center of my very Kiwi heart.
As a Kiwi born in Nelson I prefer to use the internationally recognised name "New Zealand," as I have a Dutch father I guess I still prefer "New Zealand". go figure!. How do we say New Zealand in English?
Thank you so much for talking about our beautiful country I'm a Kiwi Maori and I live in Brisbane Queensland Australia it was so great to see your post here talking about our beautiful New Zealand Aotearoa. Everything you have said is so true and I miss home very Much I miss those fish and chips going to our beaches miss my family too but most of all I enjoy the loving carefree I way we live and enjoy living here in Brisbane is not the same. Although we do keep to our own Family group's by doing our Kapa Haka singing with group's that are interested in joining with us. Like fishing and Sports Rugby Netball NZRL we also now have Kiwi teachers here teaching so thats a bonus . We as Kiwi have certainly move on in life and home NZ i
I'm a Kiwi. Thank you for the kind words. Hopefully we can hold onto our culture for a little while yet. I think our friendliness and our willingness to see the humanity in everyone is one of our strongest suits. I'm reminded of a story where a wife in a small family talked about how they cried when they got to New Zealand because when the customs official asked them how long they intended to stay in NZ for. And the wife said nervously that they were actually emigrating to country. The customs official smiled up at them and said "Oh! Welcome home." I think about that and how it must give so many nervous expats so much hope that they're going to be ok here, once they blend into our way of life and see how we operate.
Kyle, I absolutely agree with you. I lived in Auckland for about 22 years before moving to Australia 2 years ago. OMG, I can't tell you how much I miss NZ, I miss kiwi food, my kiwi mates, my kiwi neighborhood & I miss breathtaking stunning views, I miss everything 😢😢 Here, in OZ, people are quite standoffish, they keep it to themselves, here neighborhood is like graveyard, nobody talks to one another where as in NZ, even a stranger smiles at you & you can just strike up a conversation with a stranger & you feel like you know them for very long time. I miss it so much. 😢😢
What an excellent start to your channel! It's great hearing what people from other counties think of NZ, and as others have said, you're a natural in front of the camera. Looking forward to your Whittaker's video, I use it as currency when visiting my Canadian relatives 😄
Thank you Chevron Lily!! That's really kind of you to say, I massively appreciate that sort of encouragement in these early stages! You're right about Whittaker's... if my salary could be paid in creamy milk I'd be happy!
We have our problems, but I wish NZ born Kiwi's would appreciate what we have here as much as our new immigrants do, we really are lucky to have this place to live in, it could be a lot worse
An awful lot of us do, and that's why we don't like imports advertising it to all and sundry as if it out-Disneys Disneyland. It's the world's best kept secret and I, for one, would prefer if it stayed that way. If I found a never ending pot-of-gold paradise I wouldn't tell anybody.
Wow mate, couldn't tell these were your first videos at all, you're a natural! I just spent 7 months travelling around the North Island, here were the most memorable fish and chips in case you end up in these towns: Ngawi, not too far from Wellington but a bit off the beaten track, had a caravan called the Captain's Table. Very unique part of NZ, amazing fish and chips! The Wharf Cafe in Thames was sensational, and as a bonus has battered mussels scallops and oysters.. unbelievable. Special mention, though these aren't fish and chips, to the Hook Inn fish and chips shop in Kamo, north of Whangarei, which along with good fish and chips has a brilliant mussel fritter burger; Cafe 35 in Tokomaru Bay, East Coast with the incredible Paua Pie (check before you go as to whether they'll be open that day!); and the Wellington waterfront stall Food for the People that serves a mind blowing oyster fritter in bread. Those were the most memorable seafood meals I had. Enjoy 😂
That's such a lovely thing to say, thanks a lot mate I genuinely appreciate that! Thank you for those recommendations, I can tell you now I've had the exact oyster fritter in bread you're referring to and I think your use of the term mind blowing is exactly correct. The concept of a Paua Pie sounds absolutely superb, I will be making sure I get that down me at some point! Your 7 months must've been amazing, particularly around the far north which is somewhere I'm desperate to see! Cheers mate
Loved your perspective but the average kiwi will admit "we sure ain't perfect!" With such a small population we certainly punch above our weight in many fields such as sport, tech and science yet we tend not to crow about it. Cursed a little by that thing called "tall poppy syndrome." You've earned my sub so keep 'em coming!👍🏻😄🇳🇿
Thanks mate that's really awesome to hear that! You're totally right, like any country there are definitely some drawbacks. Tall poppy syndrome is an interesting one over here for sure!
Just found the channel and its pretty good. Im a kiwi and I can say everything you've said is true as kiwis its just kind of normal to help your neighbor out.
Another great thing is that no matter what part you live in, most things are just a drive away. Stunning beaches, rivers, city’s, mountains to tramp or ski on, vast farmland, huge malls. And alot of other things so whatever you like to do is just a drive away. Love my country ❤ 🇳🇿
Yeahh New Zealand! Imma kiwi, and love you gassing us up like this haha 😄 Fish and chips are a go to all year round, a few places are below the standard, but we definitely have a standard. The "she'll be right mate" attitude, nothing is that big of an issue for you to pull ya hair out over, I mean, we still have a few Karen's here and there but mostly we're laid back people, when things get tricky we can always fall back on our ingenuity. Definitely is a beautiful country. I love living in Tauranga and get beautiful views of the beach and the port from up in the hills. Gorgeous place. Kiwi ingenuity, true, we can at to do anything with almost anything else. If it can be fixed with duct tape then it ain't broke. And if ya neighbour or someone needs a hand you lend it to em, true we're all pretty keen to just get stuck in. It's kind of a point of pride that we have as to what skills or connections we have that we can offer someone. And the roads are pretty cool, i love driving through Paeroa its one of those lovely little towns that's world famous in New Zealand since ages ago. The most pollution we get is a cow drops a dump in the creek, its genuinely an issue sometimes, and there's a general demonisation of anyone who litters. Having Christmas in summer is a thing we do really make our own, it's not an uncommon tradition to go to the beach and get some fish and chips for Christmas. The Coca-Cola santa wears jandals / flip flops and a bathing suit on all the Coca-Cola marketing adds in summer. Gotta try a peanut slab by whittakers, a classic kiwi snak, it certainly is quality chocolate. Te Reo or The language in English. Te Reo and the whole Maori culture is truly a gem in New Zealand. Its a great shame what the colonisation effort did to the Maori people and all the flow on effects since then. The young New Zealand Europeans are really waking up to the injustice of the past and recognising the value of the Maori people and their culture. Just my 2 cents on each of your points bro. Glad you're enjoying you time in New Zealand, we're happy to have ya. It's a bit of an essay but I'm just excited whenever i see New Zealand out here on the Internet
Kapai kapai Isn't it amazing how the Maori language has gone through such a reinvigoration after nearly being wiped out. Multiculturalism benefits everyone. And this is coming from a grumpy 60 year old male pakeha. Excellent video mate, keep up the good work. 😀👍
It's interesting to hear a Brit confirming our standard of Fish n chips mate, I had the argument with a couple of workmates when living in London on an OE that laughed when I suggested they were much better at home. My argument was you may have invented them, but we perfected it! 😅
Thank you Jo! You're absolutely right, we definitely have some lovely scenery in the UK too, but some stark differences. Mountains here being one of the main points of difference for sure!
I'm glad you've had a good NZ experience and have clearly been around some nice people. It makes me wish those blanket statements are true around NZders not feeling or showing stress, always being helpful, people being genuinely committed to environmental sustainability.. however it is really quite a mixed bag in reality.
So good man pronunciation of te reo words is good as so glad you enjoy hearing day to day not like some of the so called kiwis that think they’re trying to get rid of the English language 😂😂😂😂
The best thing about sliding down the hill on cardboard is, when the grass got too worn away, you laid a hose down at the top & you got yourself a water slide (sans cardboard, of course)
@@itscurlsbaby When I was a kid (long time ago) we'd rub candle wax on the underside of the cardboard for extra slip. The downside was it made stopping harder so occasionally we'd end up tangled in a fence. Totally worth it. I've seen both your videos and, as others have commented, I had no idea you've only just started doing these. You're a natural mate.
Ooo, to get an even better waterslide, chuck a tarp on that worn grass and add some dishwashing liquid before putting the hose on. 10 out of 10 waterslide, just be careful not to injure a finger like I did 🤣
So happy I discovered your channel. You just reminded me myself being a kiwi living abroad for sometime now, of all our kiwi slang. Halarious and well done you for your Te Reo pronounciation.
To me, one of the best things about being a NZer is having our Aussie mates just "across the ditch"! We tease each other with the banter but that's what good mates do!
Love your korero about NZ your making me home sick your take on the kiwi humor made me laugh out loud I so miss the best fish n chips in my home town I'm looking forward to your take on whittaker's chocolate you won't be disappointed I'm so glad we can buy it in Australia . Thanks you cheered me up .
Love your viideos. Want to say how most people used to a white Christmas do not rate summer Christmas but growing up here it has always been my favourite thing. Xmas cards with Santa in a a singlet, bbq Christmas along with a ham or turkey, going to the beach after opening presents for a swim ... it is absolutely incredible. Also love that you mentioned whittakers i love it sooooo much.
Thank you Tania that's so cool to hear! I'm on the fence with Christmas because there's definitely an appeal to both, love getting all cosy in winter at Christmas still with summer to look forward to, but then exactly as you say how can people not absolutely adore presents beach and swim in the same morning?! It's amazing!
its my dream to visit and explore new zeland since the first time i saw its landscapes i absolutley fall in love with it in my opinion the most beautiful country in the world. hopefully i get the working holiday visa this year
I watched your previous video & came back for more. Kiwi's love hearing people talk New Zealand (Aotearoa) up. Thank you. I love that Maori is now being incorporated into our lifestyle as is rightly should. I originally came from the South Island & miss the scenery down there, so have to make trips back there when I can. On pollution, one of the things that is helping in Auckland is later model cars are cleaning running & we have a very low pollution index. We are now experiencing congestion, but this is slowly being planned for. There are more cyclists out there now, and don't forget dog walkers. I am excited that we have created a very family oriented culture, that loves overseas cultures. The church I am in has got many Filipinos, South Americans, Pacific Islanders, Europeans, Africans and any more. This is so great for learning more about other cultures & understanding how they think. We now have a fantastic array of cuisines (like walking along a street smorgasbord), and agreed the fish & chips are to die for. The Seafood Collective in Mt Eden is where I go & is rated the best. Thank you for reminding us just how lucky & blessed we are in this very green country. Beaches, bays, mountains & scenic drives are so close. The scenic walks in the Waitakere Ranges are amazing for bird life & waterfalls. Even the highways are interesting. Whittaker's Bundaberg Ginger-Caramel Chocolate is one of the best treats I have ever tasted & I hope they bring it back. This was a collaboration with Bundaberg Brewing in Australia. Looking forward to your next video, & have subscribed Curls, thank you.
Excellent and btw I've visited the UK three times, in August, so yeah got the best but WOW!!! I love your neck of the woods too bro! Our mob arrived here in 1850 from your place so I guess there was some subconscious magnetic cognition going on eh! Good on ya!!!
So good to hear the positives. Sometimes we forget the good things. And as for the "never stress", you will soon learn the language like sweet as, no worries, mint as (means something that should have gone on the bin ages ago but nah, mint as! 🤣)
Well done you!!! Love your Maori pronunciation. My parents immigrated nearly 70 years ago. The changes even over that time have been phenomenal. I am here by Treaty, not right, and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. In trying to learn te reo I have had nothing but encouragement. We have three national languages, Maori, English and Sign Language.
This is why I actually love my country! Given I have never traveled abroad to make comparisons, but seeing people such as yourself point out the beauty that is here in New Zealand really brings it home for me. Thankyou I hope you continue to enjoy this beautiful land I call home. We do still have underlying issues no doubt, but all in all it's a pretty fabulous country to be in.
My absolute favourite thing about your channel is all the kiwis in the comments cheering you on, that kinda sums us up as a nation we don't ever sweat the small stuff but we have so much love and support for each other!
I read a book once, set in New Zealand, about this guy who had a boat whose name translated to Happy Canoe. Can't remember the original Maori name but it was a proper boat - with sails and an engine and a place below deck to live and sleep in - and it was called 'The Happy Canoe'. That tickled me pink.
Xmas BBQ at the beach is great!! haha would love if you also did your X number of favourite things from where you live? Loving the videos, keep em up :)
Lorraine's legs 😂🤣😂🤣 too funny, subbed mate,do a video of our meat pies sometime,I also love curry sauce ,I used to get mine from a shop on the Nth Shore in Auckland,so good,British Curry sauce too.
Kia ora ehoa. It’s up to each of us to make this country great and you are an open minded, welcome addition to Aotearoa NZ. Enjoy fish & chips over Labour Weekend😊
I love your humour and can't wait to see more content from you 😊 honestly as someone from New Zealand i can really tell you are trying your best P. S my Nana has lived here basically her whole life and pronounces Maori words worse than you do!
That means a lot to hear that Sarah, thank you so much!! Definitely more to come. Still some words that trip me up without doubt, but hopefully I'll keep progressing! Enjoy your day!
Good old Fush n Chups. 🤣🤣🤣 another Goldie is go to the beach on Sunday. Order some hot chups, go to the dairy and pick up a fresh loaf of bread and some butter, go back pick up your chups and head on down to hang out on the beach with some mates. 😋😄
and commence doing battle with the seagulls lol. If they don't get the left overs (which is written in their contract) they will mark you and your vehicle with the white mark of shame so all the other gulls know you are in breach of contract and are not worth their time and effort.
That's true I now my neighbors lawns for free every second week cause she's an old lady and her kids and that lives in the city so she sometimes cooks my nice dinner and lunch 🥰💯
These videos are classic. I'm an Aussie and have lived in NZ for over a decade. It's a fookin' brilliant little country. So fookin' grateful to he able to live here peacefully with mostly kind people. Yes it's true. Kiwis are really good-willed 99% of the time. They are a community-minded bunch. The police here are fantastic and do great community work too. It's so chill 😎 So very fortunate and thank you Kiwis for being a bunch of Kool Katz 😻 Churrrr🤙
Cheers mate . But when I went to England i was mind blown by the historical history and buildings. And one thing you have over us is not your pies not your fish n chips not your roads not your weather not your beer not your food. But your PUBS ! Your bubs are a amazing 👏 the atmosphere is so heart warming and relaxing they are the best watering holes in the world !
I'd say Kiwis aren't overtly stressed, but keep things bottled in. Our culture is very much "she'll be right, and get on with it". We have some some of the highest youth suicide rates in the developed world. Overall I agree we are chill but thought I'd point that cultural difference out.
Nau mai haere mai ki Aotearoa, welcome to New Zealand, we’re new subscribers from Auckland. Just wanted to commend you regarding your pronunciation of the indigenous language “ka pai”. To many of us, we expect mistakes but, we appreciate someone at least trying rather than “can’t be bothered, it’s not my language or, it’s not important”. Obviously, with Google it’s easier to research however, don’t be afraid to ask any questions, I’m sure one of your knowledgeable followers will assist, mauriora
Kia ora, firstly thank you so much for subscribing, secondly thank you for such beautiful words. You're absolutely right, it only takes a small amount of effort to show respect or at least attempt to get things right. I've got heaps more to learn but I'm very glad to be starting that journey. Genuinely appreciate you taking the time out to say this, hopefully you enjoy my future videos! Thanks once again. Curls
@@itscurlsbaby Kia ora has several meanings depending on tone and delivery. It can be used to show gratitude (thank you) or when agreeing with a point being voiced by another orator (supportive). We hope you enjoy the great outdoors. Be safe always, summer is almost here “Slip, Slop & Slap”… A te wa Curtis (until next time).
Kia ora, you always crack me up, yr a dag, another great thing about our beautiful country is all the moaning kiwis leave... love that...they're someone else's problem now although. They seem to still moan about nz on most social media posts but hey...glad you love our ataahua country 😉
We do have stress. We just squash it all down inside. Which is why we have such a high suicide rate. At my kids school they had a support group for kids who had lost a parent to depression. Because there were that many of them who qualified.
Thank you Teri! I've only left New Zealand once during my time here and I can tell you now I definitely felt homesick too! Hahaha brilliant example of kiwi ingenuity, might have to include that one in a video soon!
Whenever I go back home to Europe with my family they can never understand how I can stay so cool under pressure when I was anxiety riddled before. NZ has calmed me so much and gave me a better meaning of life.
Hey dude, my sister is the night manager of whittikars if you want a personal tour of the factory it can be arranged. Hit me up next time your in Wellington.
Well done cuzzy you are becoming a local if not already 1 by now, thats the beautiful thing about this land every one is welcome and when we have people like you who show respect and love to all things can only get better,Yea there is some shady things about this country and people and not all will show respect to us Maori people but 1 thing i can tell you i have the upmost respect for Europeans and pretty much any race that walks this land i would glady share what i have with any of them from hunting to fishing to a hangi right down to showing them some of the best diving spots for sea food, so keep up the great mahi (work) cuzzy your video and honest replies encouraged me to share the love with you and those wanting to recieve it, stay well and stay safe !!!!!!! 977 subs not far to 1k , Arohanui (Big Love)
Kia ora! What a lovely thing to say, that's made me smile and genuinely made my day. I totally agree that nowhere on this earth is perfect, but Aotearoa comes pretty close. You've captured the Kiwi spirit perfectly there and you're absolutely bang on the money when you say about sharing - whether that's food or showing somebody around or even helping someone settle in, that's what I've found this country to be all about. Genuinely appreciate you taking the time out to comment mate, that's honestly given me such a boost. Hugely, hugely grateful. Arohanui ❤
HOLY SHAMOLY CURLS..... you have certainly grown a fair bit in 2 weeks haven't ya........ 👍👍 wont be long before you've SMASHED 1K....... Just want to say I absolutely loved this video bro 🤜🏽🤛🏽 KIA KAHA KIA TOA Gonna share this out on the old community tab 👍👍
Kia ora Taniwha!! What a legend you are mate. Honestly from the bottom of my heart it means a lot to read that, it’s exactly why I started to make these videos in the first place. Thanks for your support and hope you’re enjoying the long weekend!
Aw chur bro. Great video and, as others have said, you're a natural. Once you've done Whittakers you should do a pie road trip. Start with (or at least go to) the Fairlie Bakehouse in Fairlie in the South lsland. Their Salmon and Bacon pies are worth any amount of kilometres. Also, mention pies, and half of Aotearoa will jump into the comments to recommend their favourites.
New Zealand is a great country for many reasons, but, Fish and Chips, nothing is as good as English Cod and Chips, sorry there’s nothing, accept maybe a mixed doner kebab late at night.
Believe me mate I grappled with this in my brain for a long time! UK fish and chips is absolutely superb, but I've had some not so great ones in my time! Late night doner kebab though, now you're speaking my language...
3:50 is also partly due to geography. We're located right at the "roaring forties" - a latitude with a strong prevailing westerly wind - and there's a huge expanse of ocean all around. The result is that any pollution we do make gets blown away immediately, and there's virtually nothing to blow dust onto NZ (with the occasional exception of an Australian wildfire). I totally agree with what you said, but I figured I'd acknowledge that we have a bit of an unfair advantage.
I've watched a few of these sort of about people saying what they like and don't like about NZ, its the first time I've heard any1 say we're kinda unflappable as a people. Had to think about that one...fingers crossed it's true, that's a great quality to have in the crazy world we live in.
yes, yes, yes!!! Whittakers chocolate is the best chocolate in the world! you should've also mentioned that Whittakers released a te reo maori brand of chocolate, basically translating milk and cream chocolate into 'miraka kirimi'...otherwise you're spot on mate...you be an honorary kiwi in no time, or are you already??? lol arohanui bro!
