OKIDOKI GUYS! I have been getting lots of comments from people thinking I am against snail keeping. But if you watch the video then you'll see that that isn't the case. At all! I do encourage snails as pets but I also think its good to give the cons about pets. I plan on having a con video for every pet I own. I dont think that nobody should keep them. Obviously I keep them and I have care guides for them so you can learn yourself. I upload these so people can be even more informed and its not all painted up to have no flaws. I love snails and I love that you guys love snails 🐌💕
It's because your title sucks and makes snails seem like bad pets, and you don't really seem to know a lot about snails. 7 of 10 not to get snails are not even real issues. The gnats and mold are rough though for real, so that is one good warning
@@pajamapantsmonday6893 i also said in the video that these arent all my points and I dont see a lot of them as cons. But everyone is different. I asked groups and ended up with people saying their own cons. I added up the most common ones. Your experience isnt the same as everyone else's. Mine isnt either. I hate culling. But decided that the pros outweigh that for me. But i dont see mold or gnats as a problem but you do. Its not a list designed for specifically one person.
@@pajamapantsmonday6893 maybe this isn’t for you, but it’s good basic info that is important to know,, definitely with little kids who might just try to keep a snail in a jar
@@Cameronfelt you can literally keep a snail in a jar fine and they will be happy with regular food and misting. Just because this person has snails doesn't mean they know even the basics about snails
Be careful not to get one of these german, berlin club snails. They play their techno music all night long, never stop to party and not just on the weekends!
Btw important note about snails laying eggs: even if you have one snail the snail can and will lay eggs. Snails are hermaphrodites, and they can self-fertilize.
@@wackyantman5893 "Like other Pulmonata, the individuals of the species Cornu aspersum (Helix Aspersa) are hermaphrodites, producing both male and female gametes. Reproduction is usually sexual, although self-fertilisation sometimes occurs." Source: Wikipedia. I guess they can
I got kind of scared watching the video cause I thought I wouldn't be able to deal with the cons and would have to give up on keeping snails for now but I can definitely deal with these, thank you so much for the information tho! It helps a lot :)
I was quite hesitate to watch this video thinking I might not be able to have a garden snail from my garden but after I finished watching it (already knowing loads of this) I was quite grateful for this video and happy I watched it! Tysm for the informal video.
I'm glad you're only speaking facts and you aren't actually villainizing this nails I've seen a lot of people make the snails seem like really really bad animals just because they are biologically pests so thank you for providing facts that we can think on and instead of just shaming the snails basically you're also helping snails because you're making sure that snail owners don't get them impulsively and then just put them in their garden which could be bad for the garden and for the snail depending on the time and type of snail
Thank you! It is my number one goal to make sure people are happy with pets I tend to promote 😊 I think that snails are wonderful pets. But they definitely aren't for everyone ❤
Thank you so much! I've been thinking of having a snail terrarium for awhile but I didn't know anything about how to care for them until I stumble upon your channel, a true blessing!
I’m so glad i watched this video before i was about to get snails and start the set up. I had no idea what i was getting myself into. I decided this is not the journey for me. Thank you for saving me from my poor impulse control 🤦🏼♀️
I want to get pet snails in the future (not anytime soon) and im greatful that people like you are sharing info for people aspiring to keep snails as pets and seeing if it's really for them and what to do💕
huge respect for the video, 99% people just see the bright side of a pet and cherish the thought of owning a pet but the reality is way different, thanks for showing the reality
in the video you mentioned snails being social, this is actually a common myth! there isn’t anything proving snails require other snails. they cannot get lonely (they aren’t “advanced” enough to feel emotions) and the only thing i see is that they have more enrichment when it comes to getting food- but that’s it, and there are no negative impacts we have seen to keeping a snail on its own!
I watched this video 3 weeks ago when I found a snail and wanted to take care of them. I did understand why I had to kill the hunts and eggs if I didn’t want them to hatch. It was hard understanding because I felt like you were too “cold” because of the way you talked about it (the vibe you could say). Now I feel like I’m ready. I have 11 snails, and today, one of them had babies, and I think I’m ready to hatch them. I have everything I need, and I really really thank you for this video, and for making me ready to start all this. Thank you.
Im glad I was able to help ☺ I totally understand that I sounded cold and too nonchalant about it. It is an incredibly sad topic and I don't do well with death or sad things, its a part of my emotional regulation problems. Thank you for understanding though! It means a lot and congrats of your snail babies!!! 🐌💕
@@ExploringExotics I totally understand. And it also comes down to being responsible and fast about things. A lot of people simply don’t want to hear or understand. It’s really amazing that you talked about it even if you knew there was people who could still be against it and send hate. Thank you! They’ll grow up being healthy babies!
This actually kept me from letting my adhd take over and trying to keep a pet I couldn’t care for! I struggle with this involving insects and small animals from time to time, but you’ve saved the snails a lot of trouble and me a lot of guilt, so I do really appreciate it. I will be releasing my babies back into their proper place outside (they came from the outside)
My snail loves being held if he sees me near his tank he’ll come over to the glass close to me when I take him out he moves all up and down my arm normally just chilling there after a while
Thank you! There are things you mentioned that I wouldn't have thought of. I'm glad I didn't just jump into it without checking first, that would have been awful. A pet going to the spca or having to rehome because of me not taking the time to do my homework. It happens to a lot of animals, especially around Christmas and Easter.
My snails laid eggs about 5-4 months ago and I kept half of the eggs, I'm SO thankful that all the baby snails are growing healthy and big and I don't need to cull any 😅 🐌
Thanks so much for this! I was worried about keeping a pet snail cause i might of accidentally killed it and now i understand more so thanks so much!!! :)
probolly because the vet would not know what to do they arnt really trained to handle small insects and stuff like that its outside of there knowledge its not like you can give medicine to a snail so its hard to do anything about there illnesses
Though this was a hard video to make, thank you for doing it! I am a snail admirer, but I probably will never own snails because of the reasons you've laid out. Its better to know this info up front rather than only seeing super positive content. You're appreciated!
I've been considering getting some snails some day, but wanted to see the downsides to help me decide if and when, and how it could affect my home. Thank you so much!!!
I totally raise snails as a food source for my salamanders, the snails co-habitate with my worms. I use the eggs for protein loving isopod, baby salamanders, and dwarf clawed frogs eat them too.
Thank you so so so much for this video!! I was planning on making a terrarium and I thought it would be cool to put snails in it - after learning about the culling and more concerningly the fruit flies, I've realized it isn't a good idea for me! (also my boyfriend vetoed it when he heard about the flies lol). I'm so grateful I saw this or I probably would've got them and then had a major problem with overpopulation, fruit flies, etc. Thank you so much!! :). For now I will be content with my plants and cats
I just accidentally rescued a bunch of tiny baby disc snails. I was gifted an indoor plant and there must have been some from the garden centre. After a couple weeks i noticed teeny snails. I cant keep this soil. But the ones ive seen i cant not rescue they were on the plant i couldnt just leave them there id have to kill them and couldnt do that with what seems like healthy babies. I have been re searching all day and just got them the best i can for the night. This was actually very helpful. So much more info then on alllll of google.
@@ExploringExotics found more and more before i got rid of the soil. went through culling and learning so much. Feel like a professional snail owner now 😂 one of the adults did pass but i feel it got a much longer life then it would have got in the dry plant. Now after culling down to 4 babies . 1 adult. and have now also rescued two grove snails. unfortunately one was so severely retracted and breathing hole covered in slime always. ended up having to euthanize but one is going strong. :D
I was doing volunteer work (picking up littered garbage) yesterday with my sister and I found so, so so many Garden snails among the trash like Paper chip bags and styrofoam :( I wonder why is that, but as someone who had an interest in snails when I was younger it was great to see them again ☺️ Also great informative video!
@@abbyssnails4663 take out the lettuce and put different food they will get hungry and as they will have nothing else to eat they will eat it 😊 Don’t give them any lettuce for a while keep the food in the tank/box until it had gotten moldy or rotten I had to do that with my Snails 😅
I've got a terrarium from amazon, and I just picked up six garden snails in order to raise. I have pill bugs in the terrarium, I figured the pill bugs will eat the eggs and also eat the poop, so I've got that taken care of. I have a lot of earthworms down in the substrate layer, I hope that's okay. I'm not planning on doing a ton of maintenance, I figured they can just chill
I saw that snails loved to eat strawberries and my snails did not touch it, mine get fed lettuce, peppers, apples, cucumber, and I use eggshells for calcium.
My little sisters friend Got snail and she told her she didn't want them bc they were much work. And wonder if I could take them. I told my sister to tell her I could, but also tell her you shouldn't get that many animals in one go, it shouldn't be a habit to re home them just bc you got bored. except if you are running out of space or/and moving. She has many animals herself from what I know, I don't know what animals tho. But I understand, she is young and probably want an animal to hold more often. But it's never too young to take accountability for small animals.
Hi! This may be a stupid question but what do you mean by mental collapse and why does it happen? I assume it's old age but I'm just checking to be sure lol
No stupid questions here ☺ Mantle collapse is a condition where the snail starts to come out of the shell. There is no cure as far as I know. I believe old age can be a factor but the biggest reason it happens is people picking them up by the shell. When you pick up a snail, you need to touch their foot and let them release suction before lifting
I have a 20 gallon tank I own 7 big snails aiming for 10 I have the isopods in there with them and they keep the tanks super clean I check it daily every morning and evening I keep it sprayed with a spray bottle both times i check on them feed them well different varieties of fruits and vegetables…there living there best life lol
Hello Ollie, I would love to get a pet snail but as for actually squishing eggs part, I’m not sure I would have the heart to do so. Would temperatures work for rendering them infertile, such as putting the eggs in the freezer? Thank you!
Hi! you can absolutely freeze the eggs. I would just pop them in the freezer for 24-48 hours and it will cull anything inside. I just would not recommend doing this with already hatched snails
I want to keep snails for a few reasons, they are cool, they can eat some left over vegetables that and that kind of stuff and also I have some animals that can eat snails so I could feed them as treats when they breed.
usually that is fine If you live in the US. I can't speak for other countries. but here they are of least concern. easiest way to find them is to find local gardeners and just ask to come take a look for snails. they don't want them in their gardens so most of the time they will let you :)
@@ExploringExotics I live in the us so I should be fine then I think lol, would I have to worry about any like diseases or any kind of germs that could hurt me?
@@yourbunnygirltay1421 not really just make sure to wash your hands after handling and you should be good. If you want to deworm you can do that just in case. Ofcourse remember that wild caught snails can always have an underlying health problem and can be older than expected
Another point to make - wild captured snails and slugs may carry rat lung worms, and you don't really to be infected... Always remember to handle them with gloves and to wash your hands with hot water, never ever bring their slime near your mouth, let alone eat them.
Its up to people if they wanted to pet any types of animal as long as its not harmless to other people, ofcourse having pet some uncommon animals or other types of species comes for a risk but let us say that people are already well aware of those risk and consequences that might happen..
Yes. People are allowed to have whatever pet they want (if its legal of course lol) I disagree that people already know the cons however. I have kids on my channel and I usually make content promoting these pets and their care. So I feel lile it is important to also provide why they might not be good pets for everyone. Not every pet would vibe well with every person. And it is good to acknowledge that some people like pet snails in theory. But in practice, they would not enjoy their pet
I found a wild snail on the road to school, I put it in a small jar for 6 hours, then put him in a plastic box with a piece of carrot and lettuce, I tamed him so he wasn’t afraid of touch, then released him :)
My neighbor has ducks and lets just say that I never have too many snails... It feels a lot better then like smashing them or throwing them in the trash.
About the culling, couldn’t the mutated ones stay in separate tanks so they don’t mate?(if that’s why people cull so there is not more genetically mutated snails) 😊 And about the eggs could you set the eggs in the wild to hatch outside naturally? 😊
I've had 22 pet snails as a kid and they never laid eggs. Once I found something that looked like eggs but it wasn't. Maybe it was because of their species. I had so many different ones but since they can reproduce on their own idk why they never did xD
I’ve kept garden snails since I was 5 and I’m 14 right now. They are right about the euthanasia when snails get sick. The most painless way to kill a snail is to place it on the ground outside and slam down a big rock. It’s difficult and emotional but u gotta do what you gotta do.
can you please make a video on how to find helix aspera maxima eggs?i love snails but i cant take care of more then ten,im planning on buying 2 but i really dont want to deal with inbreeding so i dont want to not check it and the POOF i have 82 snails
@@ExploringExotics it’s an absolute necessity, I totally understand that! It can’t be helped! I’m looking at some giant African land snails at the moment (albino) only thing making me say no now is the fruit flies you mention too, I’d be sold if it wasn’t for that
@@ExploringExotics what was it in the video you said about fruit flies? What seems to get rid of them? I’ve googled but don’t know if we have it in the Uk
@@James-yf2nj a katchy. I know its some on amazon but i don't know how else to get one. On time bright side they shouldnt be too bad if you keep up with the food
Well most people do handle theor snails and my snails dont seem to mind it. I wash my hands thoroughly before to remove everything and then keep them wet.
@@FollowerOFtheNAZARENE that can work just fine :) They just aren't sure handleable especially for kids. I handle mine sometimes with rinsed hands or gloves
Snails are safe to handle, but there are a few things you should do to make sure you don't cause them any harm: Before picking up your snail, wash your hands with soap and water. This will help to remove any potentially harmful lotions, oils, and natural elements that a snail may absorb off of your skin.
The mold and fruit fly thing is my biggest concern. I live in an apartment so they'd be either in the main space near the kitchen or in a bedroom. Is either area sanitary then? I don't wanna put em in the laundry room, the poor babes don't need all that thumping and detergent smells around em
Either is okay :) the mold needs removed as seen. You can also look onto sprintails. I have some in all of my damp enclosures and they take care of mold of me. As far as fruit flies go, you can keep out a trap next to the enclosure or get a katchy off amazon. Theyre a tad pricey but totally worth it! I keep mine in my livingroom currently but they have been in my bedroom before :)
@@ExploringExotics perfect!! Thanks for all the info. I know you covered the fly traps and springtails in your vid. But now I have more faith in how affective those are! My snail garden dreams will come true lol You're my hero! thanks
Okay if i didnt saw this vid, a snail would prob die rn. I was thinking of getting snails🐌 i dont know if i should do it or not, cause we have a lot of snails in our garden, but they don't survive out there and to me thats so sad. What can i do the best? Lovee, s
One good thing to remember is that snails have so many babys so that they have a higher survival rate. They arent all supposes to live, which is really sad. If you decide to take some in just be prepared for culling or anything like that. The snails outside may not have the best luck if there are pesticides in your garden. You can try relocating them as well :)
@@ExploringExotics ok, thank you. I was thinking since they'd be native to the area I wouldn't need to kill the babies. But I guess it would make too many snails?
I have 3 snails 🐌 and tysm about the information it helped me a lot but one on my snails had eggs 🥚 but only had 10 and I crushed them I got really sad after doing this but I know I had to do it!
Interestingly this video just made snails seem cuter to me, haha 😂 I'm still not going to keep them as pet though, i know I don't have the structure :/
Also, if you are crushing the babies, do you freeze them before hand? And would that make them dead/unconscious like meal worms or crickets before you cook or in this case crush them so that they don't feel pain? I think that's something I might try if I ever am over burdened and my decollates can't keep up
So studies are showing that snails do not really feel pain like we do but they do feel stress. freezing living snails is extremely stressful and is considered inhumane. Eggs would not feel it which is why it is acceptable but live snails at any age should be crushed. it is easy to crush the smaller ones since they dont have very strong shells however if you do want to sedate them or you have a larger snail that needs euthanized, then you can give them a beer bath before hand. ofcourse if you crush try to make it a solid and quick one and done crush to avoid them experiencing the stress or potential pain
Why is it that releasing the eggs outside is unethical? You mentioned later in the video that snails can be pretty devastating to ecosystems. Does it have anything to do with that? Thanks for putting this video together, I came from tiktok thinking sails looked like a fun short term pet and you gave me a 360 perspective.
Absolutely! You also dont want to risk giving anything harmful that they be able to pass from captivity. Plus there are tons of legal things atleast here in the US. A lot of snails are invasive, just impossible to get rid of at this point. So you could be potentially allowing more of the invasive species go in the wild. Where I live its illegal in general to release captive bred anything unless you have permission from the DNR. For example. If I found turtle eggs while doing construction, in my state I can incubate the eggs if I have a fishing license and can release them only if theyre incubated away frim any other captive animals in the home :) its all very complicated with snails in the US
Hi so I have a question is there male and female snails? Because I know some animals there isn't male and female but they still can have eggs and if there is female and male could you keep two females or two males and not have a problem?
Do snails have parasites? Can I get sick from touching them or cleaning the enclosure? I always wash hands, but I've read a few things saying you can get worms and other parasites from taking a snail from your garden and making it a pet.
Hiya! They can have parasites. But shouldnt transfer anything to you as long as you WA ah your hands after handling and dont eat them :) I have a video about parasites and I have one about snail keeping myths and talk about it there as well ❤
Heya! Snails are not social! They don’t have the ability to feel lonely! The only reason they’d be more active with otehr snails is because they have competition! And that’s the reason! Snails ARE NOT social!
Also! Some species of snails like amber snails kinda need to be kept in colonies because their lives are so short! And they’ll die quickly unless they breed a lot!
Yes! Since I made this i found out that them being social is a myth. When I started to keep i heard about them being social a ton and only recently found out that it isnt true
