Progress was very slow for me, there's so much to experiment with in terms of mediums and technique until you find a process that you love. It's also important to know that most artists will face rejection countless times whether it's from galleries or whatever, but not to let that hinder your creativity, progress, or sense of self worth. The reason for rejection isn't necessarily contingent on the quality of your work, it might just be that the subject matter doesn't resonate with a gallery or something trivial. I heard from Tim Packer, a Canadian artist, that there are art festivals/events that you can pay a few grand to go to and if the public loves your art and you have a reasonable supply, you could make 10-20k in a weekend, possibly even a sell-out show. Obviously the art would have to be "very good" and you could gauge this by reactions at smaller events before investing in a bigger art show/festival. It would be daunting to do one of those art festivals as an introvert, have you ever considered doing something like that? That's something I'm personally working towards.

Interesting…You are right, I started off with a BFA degree in Printmaking but completed MD and several other medical degrees. Now I am back in the art world (mostly painting). Some catching up but also some better directions and focus than when I was younger. I couldn’t run away for ever.

Could you do a video on how to self direct your art practice in university? like where to start etc

Would a video just on simply developing a self-directed art practice be helpful? Or specifically within the context of university? (Factoring in maybe your cohort, uni resources such as workshops, tutors etc.)

Akhh the last sentence is so true! In my heart deep down I’m an artist and I always was, I went a different direction, working in the labs in biotech companies and every single day I’m like, what the fuck am I doing here!!! So difficult to find the balance and find my artistic path! But I’m glad that no matter what, art doesn’t leave my life and the older I get the more it embraces me.

Sometimes jumping straight into it is just as stressful and scary when there's no stability to go on, but yes finding the balance is the way to go!

Remember always that there's an internal environment as well as the external! The internal always makes the external more interesting 👍

It's funny you say "How far you are from where you want to be" yet me, like so many dream of just being at your level. You're doing good. About the introvert part. Yes, getting out of the comfort zone is not as easy as extroverts make it sound. it is for sure a struggle.

Hi, Tomas! I've been watching your videos since the start of the pandemic and found out you applied to RCA. Did you consider applying to the Glasgow School of Art? Thank you and all the best to you!

Appreciate the support 👊 No if I do a masters I'll probably only look at 1 year courses, but right now I'm content with the postgraduate year I'm doing at the Royal Drawing school, it's been a fantastic year!

Glasgow School of Art? I've had a couple classmates do a BA there and they seemed to enjoy it, but I have no idea since pandemic years because post pandemic all I've heard is students complain about universities 😆

It's difficult, my advice would be not to rush big decisions and get as much information as possible from previous/current STUDENTS on courses before making a choice! Then you'll have a good idea of what you're walking into.
