I was a Lexus Service Consultant at one of the largest and busiest dealerships in the U.S. for over 15 years, and the Lexus GX460 was consistently one of the most trouble-free vehicles produced. In a world where every customer involuntarily say”I love my Lexus “
@@gabrieldegomez2271 They do not have transfer case leak issues. If you look it up, you will find some people complaining about it but it’s extremely rare. Toyota transfer cases and differentials just do not leak. And the brakes work great.
@@andybub45 I own a GX, my transfer case has a leak. The mechanic says this is normal for the GX and the 4runner. Do an online search and you will see people complaining about the issue. The brakes work yes but the pedal and the feel of the brakes are the worst of any vehicle I have ever driven. At stop lights, the vehicle will creep forward unless you apply a lot of pressure. Look that up as well.
Needs a input shaft seal. Big deal. I have a 21 and tow 5k boat/trailer with no brakes on it. The brakes are strong, trust me. Panic braking is actually scary sensitive due to PCS.
This review was the most concise and easy to follow videos I’ve ever seen. No annoying music in the background, great editing, and all valid points 1 through 10 were made. Job well done, sir!!
Just bought a 2022 GX460 about a month and I love it so far. I don’t drive it much but when I do, it does feel good to be behind the wheel. I’m not a truck/SUV guy but I love the GX thus far.
My wife and I are in our early 60’s and purchased two ‘21 models last year. We plan to keep them for the rest of our driving lives. We have always had at least one Lexus since 1994.
May I offer congratulations for your sound judgment. In my neighbourhood the best we can do is a husband and wife with a pair of Hyundai Elantra Tourings and another couple with a set of VW Golf wagons. 🙁
@@rightlanehog3151 - In the long run, a Lexus is the less expensive choice. 320K miles out of my first LX and sold the second LX with 280K. The only thing I did for repairs was the driver seat cushion foam replacement on the first and a fuel pump on the second. Otherwise, oil / filter changes, transmission and transaxle fluid changes and tires.
My partner just purchased one of these to upgrade from her 2013 RX350 after wanting on for a very long time and I never really understood why she lusted after it so much. But in the past month of her owning it, I totally get it. What a solidly built vehicle. I have no doubt that it's going to be with us for a decades!
The most well-educated review I’ve seen on the Lexus GX 460. A friend of mine had a chance to work with Lexus engineers back in 2017, and they said the same things about the GX even back then.
Totally agreed. I own 2010 GX460 and 2014 Land Cruiser. Both black in color. The GX is 4 years older but the quality is much better the LC. The ride quality ,paint , body structure. So easy to dent my LC, but not as much as for GX.
I finally pulled the trigger and purchased a '13 a few months ago. I absolutely love it (even with gas prices right now)! At 160k, it had more miles than I wanted, but it still looks and drives like new. Amazing build quality (and it was obviously well cared for).
@@jamo_montana1628 Drives great! Slow compared to my other cars, but super smooth on the highway. Also remarkable offroad. It's at around 171k now. I did have to replace the radiator a few months ago, and did the waterpump, thermostat, idler pully, and tensioner while I was in there.
The swing out rear door and the oversized front grill are negatives for sure - however, I took the plunge and bought one anyway and I can say that I’m very glad I did - solidly built; quiet, luxurious interior; smooth powertrain - no turbos or other nonsense; new infotainment stack (something we never got with in the 200 series Land Cruiser before it was discontinued); and reasonable price. Like many Toyota product purchases, initially you need to make compromises but that purchase decision looks better and better as the years pass. I traded in a 4Runner to buy this - had the 4Runner for 3 years and it had zero problems - and I mean absolutely zero, both inside and out. Quality indeed….
@@rightlanehog3151 understood, and that works great if you want to spend the additional cash to have a spare tire mount attached to the rear door and the spare fuel tank added underneath the vehicle. I would absolutely do this IF Toyota offered this package here in the US - as they don’t I have to go aftermarket and a lot of folks won’t do that.
@@rightlanehog3151 Couple that with a V8 that is not as thirsty as the Land Cruiser 200 series as you have an offroad rig that can go far from the beaten path.
Hi David! This is probably one of the best videos I’ve seen you do and I’ve been waiting for this patiently and as usual you exceed everybody’s expectations; I definitely am going to purchase a 2022 but I have to see at the end of the year if the 2023 is going to have the same properties…same engine etc. etc. again, I thank you so much for your passion and your relentless pursuit of perfection, you truly are the best, of the best, of the best… Stay well and hope to meet you sometime in 2022 or 2023 in Florida with Kirk… Respectfully Submitted, Jimmy USAF🇺🇸✈️😇👍✝️🙏💜🇨🇦🇯🇵🇨🇮
Don’t wait too long with delays etc , if you see it I’d grab it . My 2017 has been a great purchase the suspension etc is amazing .With the tech upgrades I’d love the 2022. Pretty sure it’ll be the v6 in 2023 ,that’s in the new tundra ( turbo) .And it may be a long wait. Yes better gas mileage but reliable? And if one pushes a turbo there goes the gas mileage . PS Toyotas production lines are going very slow now. Who knows with future pricing also .
Definitely buy this year, as the other commenter says they're moving to a turbo v6 in 2023. I have a buddy who works at the Lexus manufacturing plant and he confirmed it. Gas mileage won't be much better than the v8 and turbo engines don't last nearly as long as naturally aspirated ones. The current engine can last for 300k easily, 500k or more with good maintenance. Anything with this engine including Land Cruisers are basically this eras "old volvo that lasts for a million miles". Heck if you want you'll be able to pass this rig down to your kids 20-30 years after you buy it.
I’m not sure which part of Florida you are in but I’m a sales consultant at a Lexus dealer in Jacksonville Florida, we have some available if you were interested!
We love our 22 GX. It’s fairly smooth and quiet vehicle. Not as smooth as the LX, but still great. Our 4 year old daughter wants to drive it when she’s older.
This! I own a 15 LX and it’s silky smooth! Test driven multiple GXs along with 5th Gen 4runners for my wife but nothing comes close to the LX. In the end, we ended up with a 4runner for my wife mainly because of cost, cost to maintain, and cost to keep it running(regular vs premium gas). However, our next car later down the road will be the last LX V8.
I have an 03 GX470 and absolutely love it bulletproof 4.7 V8 actually is a good time to get one because of gas prices. Not as overpriced as it was due to the overlanding tax.
@@genieofdalamp because ppl are either selling there rides for fuel efficient cars right now even brand new suv’s are the only areas right now you can buy below msrp
Hello David, your videos on the GX (along with AMD @ The car care Nut) have been very helpful. For all of the reasons you spell out, I have a deposit on a 2022. Can’t wait to get it. Keep up the excellent work!
It's really amazing that Lexus sells 25,000 GX 460 in the US every year considering the MSRP and the fact that the vehicle is so reliable. It's such a constant vehicle.
I have a 2004 GX 470 and I absolutely love it. From the paint to the powertrain, it has withstood the test of time. Reliable and smooth. I plan to pick up the current Gen GX when the opportunity presents itself.
I have a 2008 GX470. It only has 148,000 miles on it. That’s nothing for a Lexus. We definitely want to buy a new one this year, but I’m torn between the GX460 (I feel like it’s just a little smaller inside) and the 2023 Toyota Sequoia. Decisions, decisions..or do I put new tires, fix the back up camera and the radio on our GX470 and keep it another 5-7 years? Tough choice!
@@tomgarifalos866 I just wish they made the Sequoia in Japan 🤬. I’m in the exact same situation. I need that extra space, but that GX is just built so well.
@@Dacoldest23 if you need the space the GX 460 will disappoint. Don’t get me wrong I love mine, but we don’t travel much anymore, our son is all grown up and doesn’t live with us, my husband has an rv for his adventures, and if I go somewhere it’s just my son and I on a snowboard trip or bike trip. It really is a4 person vehicle. I’m thinking that even going on a beach trip to Florida this year it will be a problem. Four adults , one dog and everything we need for a beach trip will also require a car top carrier. My Escalade could handle all that, but it had mechanical issues. So I guess the gist of it is, if you need the space the GX will be lacking. Third row is useless, that’s my personal opinion I never have it up.
Currently own a ‘22 GX460 in nori green and it’s a dream. Drove it from NC to CA with zero issues. Totally acknowledge the gas consumption but not once did I worry about a singe mechanical or electrical failure throughout the 2800 mile trip. There is something to be said about the reliability of a Toyota/ Lexus product. We also own a 100 series LC which we drove across country as well with zero issues or worries. Just smooth miles. If you’re looking for a vehicle that you don’t want to worry about for anything and also ride in comfort the ‘22 GX460 is an easy choice. Really just depends on what you want and if you truly believe in a product. Would buy a GX460 or 470 in a heartbeat.
Thank you David. I just bought a 2023 GX 460 because of your reviews. I don’t like driving that much but with the GX, I find myself looking forward to my next drive. This thing is so fun to drive.
Traded in my 2020 Lexus RX350 F-Sport for brand new 2023 GX Premium. 3,200 miles on it & its the best vehicle I have ever owned! Absolutely love this behemoth of a vehicle!
couldn't agree with you more. This has hands down been one of my favorite SUV's. I just bought a 2022 model a few months back and I absolutely love it. I thought about going with the new LX, but for most of the reasons you listed here was the reason I went with the GX. No regrets here.
I have an ‘18 and a ‘21 GX. I’m in my 50’s and have owned dozens of vehicles. The GX is my favorites so far. It’s a super reliable tank on wheels. Only downside is gas mileage but for a truck it’s not bad. I get 21-22 mpg on the highway. I’ve heard some GX owners say the gas cost is “reliability tax.” Haha.
@@LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD Do you have any mods to your GX? I don’t have any mods. If i go 60 mph i get 22 mpg. If i go say 75 i’ll get 20.5 to 21mpg. (Highway). Use cruise control and don’t accelerate fast. It’s boring sometimes but saves money. I do redline mine once in a while to clean out the carbon. You can save that for getting on the highway to get up to speed occasionally. Tire pressure, clean air filter and don’t use less than 91 octane. Hope that helps!
@@LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD ahh ok. I will check out your channel. If you have lifted it, bigger tires, extra weight etc that will definitely take off some mpg’s. I’m sure you have fun off road though!
Thank you so much for confirmation that I have chosen the perfect and the best out there and yes I bought the 2022 GX460 and love everything you have mentioned in this video! I ♥️ my GX 460💯 no doubt!! Thank you for the perfect 10 reasons!
I just ordered my new 2022 GX 450! I was questioning my decision bc there wasn’t one to test drive. But your video has given me the reassurance I needed! Thanks!
Great review I bought a new 22 model in premium plus trim and also I think the mpg is not bad. If you use recommended fuel and drive within eco range it is fine. I got mine with captains chairs and ML , still exploring lot of the features on it
@@ethandavis204 yes not much different for eg since last refuel nearly 3 weeks back only driving in city and already covered 256 miles still fuel gauge showing slightly more than 1/4 tanks remaining
Just bought used 2019 GX with captain chairs but no ML sounds. You said keep driving it in ECO range. Does it mean to set it in ECO mode and will it feel less power? How much mpg if it helps by using this mode?
I had the 2018 GX “Premium” and it had so many of the attributes mentioned in this vid though now you get the added bonus of updated technology. I never had a single issue with it. I now have the LX570 (which has also been issue free thus far) and am glad to have gotten it before the LX600 came out - I just can’t bring myself to a V6 after 40+ years of owning V8s. I think if I had gotten the “Luxury” version of the GX I would still be driving it today. It had some nice extras and really didn’t cost much more. I agree that now is the time get one of these if you appreciate beautiful build quality and reliability, not to mention very high resale value.
Currently have a 2012 Toyota 4 Runner but I always wanted something a little more luxury! I know this is not the SUV with all the frills but LEXUS is the same as TOYOTA. They are the BEST cars to buy that will keep you OUT of the auto body shop! I only get the filters replaced, oil changed, tire rotation and new tires (WHEN Needed) and new battery (WHEN needed). My next vehicle will hopefully be the LEXUS GX 460!! This is a GREAT Review, this man knows his stuff!
You don't hear much about the GX 460 because the people that own these trucks drive them forever and love them. Best truck I ever bought, can't believe I got a 2016 fully loaded with 50k miles for 32k, I felt that was fair.
Very informative, great video! I have a 2021 and want to get the 2022 just for the updates but now watching your video I really want to update! Thank you!
I have been watching this GX for a long time and got exited when I learned about the interior refresh. I was lucky enough to get one luxury package in February. I have always like the front end of this vehicle and how aggressive it looks. I didn’t want to wait for the 2023, I wasn’t sure if they are going to change the engine and if they didn’t; getting the last version of the V8 is going to be a nightmare due to high demand. I cannot be happier with this vehicle, get it while you can, I don’t think Toyota/ Lexus are making many vehicles now days
03 GX still running. About to go for a week in the wilderness in it and another one. What's wild is that it can be repaired with relative ease with hand tools in any person's garage
This is my favorite vehicle period. I just wish 1. the back swing door would be replaced by a lift gate 2. Better comfort for tall drivers 3. Better/modern structure design for safety/crash test.
what are your challenges as a tall driver? I am thinking about purchasing... I am 6 feet tall more legs. I had a BMW X5 and the seat extender for your thigh area made a difference on long drives.
great review. I have an order in for a black executive 22 GX, I hope I get it soon. I put it in on April 10, i was going to go for an LX but the V6 TT killed it. I want my reliable V8. Current car is a 2004 Lexus GX 300,000 KM. BTW the placement of the radio controls is so you can adjust the radio easily while resting your hand on the gear shift (how most people drive)
I had a 2014 GX that I loved, and traded for 2014 LX sold by Mercedes dealer. The GX I traded was sold to out-of-state buyer sight unseen within hours of them listing it. I probably should have negotiated higher for the trade value, even the salesman was shocked. I did keep it clean and accessorized it well. I miss the glass hatch in the back but I prefer my LX now for the extra space and hydraulic suspension on all four wheels. Either way I miss that vehicle and there seem to be hundreds on the road here in FL.
Great video David. Much appreciated. I’m on the waiting list for a 2022 premium plus. I also believe this will be the last year of the V8. Thanks for solidifying my decision and pointing out all the “important” reasons why a person buys a GX460. I would much rather own a vehicle that is virtually maintenance free than one that has a V6 and fancy lights and switches that has to be replaced in 5 years.
I have the 2015 GX Luxury with only 33,700 miles on board, and I love it. I don’t use it every day because I also have a 2019 Camry and a BMW 4 series. I would definitely buy the 2022 if I decide to sell my 2015 GX.
That was a great review and so much on point. I bought this model year thinking that if I waited I would not get the V8 engine which was a must have for me. Plus it has the infotainment update.
So David I ordered a new 2023 GX 460 Blackline edition in Nuri Green. I am hoping a can get a leather interior and not the fux leather interior. Thank you for your help and information it was a great help. Also Amd helped with his diagnostic expertise. You guys are great. Respectfully Louie DeBenedictis. PS Might see it in late winter 2023.
David, Keep up with great work!!! I was debating between 4runner/GX. I decided to buy the GX because of V8 engine. I want to wait to the end of this year and buy one. Maybe the price might go down a bit. But I could not wait any more. So I just got my 2023 GX White/Sepia with Sport Design Package with Premium Plus and Captain's Chairs. (a gift for my Birthday) The dealer offered a great deal that I could not resist. And If I wait longer, I might not get the color/interior color that I want.
Dear Sir feist I want to thank you so much for your video and the for all the efforts you've spent in doing this video Second as an owner of this beautiful monster i had my 2022 after owning 2017 I really enjoyed this car so much as you mentioned it's fun to drive and very reliable vehicle Recently I have installed Gibson single exhaust which comes especially for the 4runner and after checking all the available videos relating to th the exhaust on the 4runner I've noticed so much difference in the sound as well as performance. Thank you so much Fawaz
Great review! I used to have one BUT i got this after driving a Mercedes ML63 AMG, so i felt very slow on this, i regret not keeping this vehicle. You review really is pushing me to get 2022. My daily drivers is 710 horse power srt durango now, so I am hoping i will like this Lexus too, what do you guys think?
Bought my CPO GX late last week before watching your video, but I knew you’d approve 😎 And agree with all sentiments about driveability. I came from an X3 M40i. As far as handling, I was shocked at the amount of feedback I got from the big truck. The power was quite a bit different because I dropped 80 horsepower and gained hundreds of pounds, but it’s more than adequate still for what I need and a markedly more reliable package
Hell of a truck the only thing I don't like is the rear gate. Looks like the engineers never thought about the people who live in the cities and have to Pararrel park. Now it's biggest problem is you can't find one and if you do they want 30k over sticker and they want over double that if you can find a LX.
As far as reliability, durability, resell value, off road capability, and best bang for your buck---which one would you guys choose between the two? 2022 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro ... or ... 2022 Lexus GX460? Thank you.
Hello David, thanks for proving me correct with my decision. Bought a new gx460 last week. It was worried about the suspension and alignment when it hits pot holes or bumps and rail roads or uneven roads, especially at high speeds. Can you let me know about that coz I had issues with my other cars and suvs. Thank you David.
I love the GX 460's. I've been a fan for about 5 years. I wish that the 2022 had a 2013 grill because I never cared for the change stylistically. I'd love to go grab one in White with a black interior right now, but it's out of range for me. Perhaps I'll get lucky and find a used one in a year or two that some wealthy person felt they simply had to trade-in to obtain the newest version. Thank You for your review!
I had a 2007 GX with 200K miles and loved it. Traded it in on a 2019 GX and I was sadly disappointed. I kept it for about a year and finally traded it in on a 2022 4 Runner. The 2019 is not as high a quality build as the 2007. In fact, my 4 Runner Limited is a much better vehicle and I’m very happy with it.
All good point plus with any car with when theres a new generation first few years always have more problems. Hopefully the new model wont lose the off-road capability
The thing is the Land Cruiser is different. It's built to such a high standard that it didn't have any problems at launch. The turbo issues were only on the Tundra. The Land Cruiser, LX and the upcoming GX will all be without issues.
I have always loved this vehicle. I agree with everything you say here and have said the same. The problem with the GX is the front end. It inhibits its ability to be a capable offroad vehicle, and is horrible styling on-road. Look how beautiful (and practical) the front end is on the Prado. Why does toyota do this to the American market? They do the same with the tundra, sequoia, and taking the LC from our market.
Good video. I own a 2010 GX460 with 110,000 almost trouble-free miles. There was a recall on the emissions air pump that was covered under warranty. My biggest complaint is the rough ride quality. You feel every single bump in the road with little damping. My wife's 2016 4Runner Limited has a smoother ride. But I still prefer the GX overall for its interior space, seating position, quality interior, and full-time 4WD. Hope they keep the V-8.
These are great rigs, but when I see the Prado version in the photo I really wish we had a version of that front end instead of the ginormous grill stuck on the US model
@@alexduque3105 That will most likely happen. The Land Cruiser and LX went from a special hatch to a traditional powered one, Toyota will probably follow that decision by giving the Prado and GX a traditional powered hatch too.
I drive rx 350 in Canada and love it so much. I chose it over BMW or Mercedes is because Lexus has better reliability and cheaper maintenance cost. I wanna get a bit bigger SUV, but GX is out of my list. It's just too outdated and doesn't look like a luxury car. I really don't think Lexus make good bigger SUVs including LX. It's really sad but it might be true.
So enjoy you David, very impressive as always. Are there many aftermarket options for the GX? I.e., front bumpers, front / rear shocks (Bilstein for i.e.) - I am being lazy asking you and not looking it up. I wish the back gate lifted but who doesn't. Thank you again
Owning a V8 is not a need.. is a want.. and if you want it you love it. I dont know how many years it will take for Toyota to refine/perfect the V6TT..in the meantime I will enjoy my gas guzzler, extra smooth, safe, reliable, sexy GX460
I have a 2020 Lexus GX 460. I love it but it was time for an upgrade. The infotainment system is very outdated. I am so disappointed with the infotainment system I considered buying a 2023 Land Rover Defender. I'm not even considering the 2023 GX 460. It's definitely going to be the 2024 GX460 for me I'm looking forward to June 8th.
