Automotive Engineer David Chao provides 10 reasons why you should buy the current, 5th generation Toyota 4Runner instead of waiting for the 6th generation 4Runner. The current 4Runner is proven and reliable, and still built in Japan - so it has many merits that may go away when the new 2024 4Runner debuts in about a year. Do you agree or disagree? Let us know in the comment section. David, by the way, has owned 7 Toyota 4Runners over the years and currently owns the 4Runner Limited in Magnetic Grey.
Automotive Press is owned and managed by David Koichi Chao, a global expert in the field of automotive evaluation, consulting, and strategy. Good Morning David, I just traded in my 17' Tacoma TRD Sport 4x4 for a used 2020 4Runner TRD Off Road Premium with 28,000 miles, in White, I absolutely love my 4Runner, the best vehicle I'v ever owned. I love watching your videos, very informative.

Own a 2018 sr5 with a 3 inch lift and 33s on it and it’s more than capable for everything I’ve thrown at it. Taken it cross country and back numerous times and never had any issues. Wouldn’t trade my runner for anything.

I love the 4Runners! My first was a 1991, then 1997, 2000, and currently 2007. The 2007 is a Sport Edition with a V8 with 323,000 miles. I have been enticed with the 2022 4Runner Trail Edition with all the updates, but I still love the V8. Thanks for your video's.

Did my research for a looong time. Watched plenty of videos like this and continue to do so. I see how excited and amped folks are to own 4runners. There are mechanics channels talking about fixing them up and customizing them all these guys are so excited about this rig. Too bad my dealership that I got mine from just doesn't share this excitement or interest in the product they're selling along with the entire workforce there. It has been a true letdown, but I remain stoked.

100% agree with you David, just bought my second 4Runner, 2022 TRD sport back in January, I been working on engines the past 18-years, I had a 2014 Toyota 4runner which unfortunately never got to work on it, they are built that good, I sold the 2014 to buy a 2022 4Runner before Toyota redesign 6th Gen , in my experience the 4Runner is the best built in quality and reliable SUV on the market today

David my thoughts exactly. Got my '22 TRD Off Road ORP late last year for those reasons. Love bulletproof old school. You can't go wrong. What you spend in gas will be offset by repair costs long term. I never buy the first 3 years of any model run anyways just on principle. As a retired dealer tech I've seen all the T.S.B.s that come out for the first 3 model years before the teething problems are sorted by the big 3 in North America. Hell I worked for one of them for 20 years retired and bought a 4runner. As a fellow Canadian though I wonder what's up with the all the option differences between US and Canadian versions. Not complaining but most US customers seem to complain about not having the options that our Canadian versions come standard with and consequently consider them outdated because of the lack there of.

I currently own a 2021 Nissan Titan Pro-4x which I need for towing my 5.5k lb tractor to the shop for the intense maintenance intervals. I've owned both mid-size and full-size trucks to include a 2003 Tacoma Ext cab 4x4. I absolutely loved that Taco and I could never get it stuck in the NJ mud or snow. I'd never actually considered an SUV as I felt they were all too car-like with the current models. That is, until this past October when I took a work trip to Anchorage, AK and through chance and great fortune was given a 21 4Runner TRD as a rental. That 4Runner fit me like a glove and it reminded me of all the great qualities of my 03 Taco. It was fun to drive, felt so sure-footed and was just the right size. It truly is the vehicle for the apocalypse as I feel that it will get you anywhere. I'm pricing between a TRD and TRD premium and I agree that it's a great value. As crazy as it sounds, I'm actually considering trading in that 21 Titan on a 23 4Runner and then just looking for an older used 1/2 ton truck for my towing needs. Thank you for the very detailed and helpful video.

This is the major reason I switched from a 21 Tacoma trd off road to a 22 4Runner SR5 was that the 4Runner was built in Japan. Mexico made Tacoma had issues with body no aligning. On top of the I used 4Lo more than anything and didn’t use crawl control as much if hardly ever and I still was out in some crazy off-road spots in the Rockies. Put bigger tires your fine
@marlonm396
@marlonm396 2 года назад
I own a 2013 Limited and that vehicle hasn't missed a beat. It is aesthetically pleasing still, and it works every day. Reason #11: Don't switch to the newer platform because you don't know what you'll get. You might end up in the same predicament as the new Tundra owners.

Only thing we would have added was the 4.0 V6 uses port injection, and will not have the issues direct injected engines have heads gunking up etc. and those big repair bills. Down the road, we will add Fox Shocks, a TRD cat back exhaust. We pray Toyota does not go the Turbo four route. Almost all 1st Gen, many second gen Ford eco boost motors have terrible reputations.

Thank you for this video David. I'm really struggling with the idea of a 4cyl turbo in the new 4Runner. I think you just solidified my decision to get the current generation rather than wait for the 6th Gen.

Buying a new vehicle in its first year out also is suspect, just look at the updates the Supra and Tundra needed. The Tundra looks like a GMC now, the previous version was superior except maybe the dash board, and copying From with small displacement turbos will tarnish the 4 Runner Brand.

I am really hoping I can pick one up new before they get away from natural aspiration. Found the perfect 2018 tundra a two years ago after hearing the new one was going to be twin turbo. Couldn't be happier. There is something to be said for long production drive trains.

Cashed out my 2017 full time 4wheel drive limited 4runner for one reason, because it's 100% made in japan , not regret a bit till today, handles amazing with full time 4wheel drive, only thing i notice is the front bumper doesn't line up . will never buy any cars made from mexico, this is just my personal experience, they all turn to lemon , had to hire an attorney.

Love my second 4R. Wish I hadn't sold my Pro. I'm leasing this one because I want to see what the 6th Gen has to offer, but I will buy when lease is up if I'm not impressed with new model. Gas prices are making it tough to keep, but I don't want to drive a hybrid yet.

@@KTB3007 that’s right. It is made by Magnuson and not all Toyota dealerships are certified to install them. Depending where you live there should be Magnuson authorized installer in your area. Good Morning David! Thank you for your videos. I wanted to ask: I have more weight on my 4runner, due steel bumpers, rock sliders and underbody armor. I often run the truck with a hard shell roof top tent as well and have 35s size tires. With all of these modifications, would re gearing be recommended? I am also contemplating on a supercharger to improve overpower. Thank you!

HI David, I have a '21 TRD pro and love it... except for the exhaust sound! The droning drives me CRAZY. Is there a simple, not too expensive, fix for this? Can I simply replace the muffler with a non-pro muffler but keep the TRD tail pipe? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Love your Channel!

Finally, an objective review of the 5th Gen that doesn't trot out the same old tired narrative about "old school", "gas hog" , "outdated", and my favorite, no power lift gate. Are we kidding? This is not why you get a 4Runner. Yes, gas mileage can be improved. But the V6 is a legendary engine. I am waiting for my TRD ORP to come in the next couple of weeks and can't wait. I was also conflicted about the Gen 6 but decided against waiting especially with the risk of a new engine not being vetted and the possibility of being made in Mexico or elsewhere. I think the values of the 5th gen will go up even more.

Love my 2018 4Runner, but the paint is the thinnest of any car I have owned! I also have a paint drip on the back. Only other thing is my timing cover leaked!!! Under warranty, but they had to drop my rack, front half shafts, oil pan, remove the valve covers and intake manifold!!!!! And, I do not like other people turning wrenches on my cars. :(
