It's 2017 and people are asking me whether I still recommend the Canon EOS 5D classic (mark 1). I still own one and I still think it's a great camera. Here are 10 reasons why.

I still use the Mark 1 for professional work (and a Mk II). Only time I get raised eyebrows is from other photographers. :-D Love the Mark 1. The back screen is horrible, but that just trained me to turn off preview mode completely and spend more time actually framing images. When you load the photos on to a computer, the images are gorgeous. I suspect I'll have a Mark 1 in my camera bag for years to come.

Rodrick HD the 1D iii is nice but it's not full frame, and for not much more money you could have a Nikon D3 which blows it away (and is full frame). The 5D mark 1 is cheaper, smaller, and lighter than either of those.

Yea the back screen sucks but it’s good enough to know if you shot it hot or low and framed well. Then when you get to computer you feel great. Which kinda is the opposite with newer cameras lol

I've been using my 5D mk 1 for 10+ years. I've never felt like I've needed anything better. I'm not a professional but I use it at social events and when I travel. EF mounting means you get access to the best Canon lens' and the portraits this camera takes with the "nifty 50" are as good as you will ever ever need. Battery life is out of this world too. I've never known a battery to last so long

I totally agree. I just bought a 5D1 two weeks ago at B&H (used) for $380 US and it's like brand new. I paid a little more because B&H offers a 90-day warranty on their used gear. I'm extremely satisfied with this as an addition to my 60D which I now use more for video. In fact, my 13-yr-old son just bought a T5i as his first DSLR, and I wish he'd gotten a 5D1 so he could learn on full frame with a metal body.

Buy from usedphotopro next time, they sell 5D's all the time for $280, almost regardless of condition or accessories, most are in great condition. You could find one a little beat up with a battery pack, and another brand new looking with a grip for the same price. And they show large closeup pictures of every angle of the camera so you know what you're buying, along with notes of anything that might be an issue. And they offer a 2 week return and 6 month warranty. I'm pretty sure they give every camera a good once over before selling it, including cleaning the sensor.

I have two Mark 4's... but thruout my journey, I have still kept one of my mark 1's... and I still use it. The back screen, while nothing compared to the new bodies, trains you a lot more on using the histogram, and that alone is the key to keep producing perfect exposures. Also the one center point AF recomposition technique trains you better, and makes you quick on your creativity... and I agree, there is a bit of a film look, even at ISO 1600, the extra grain is just magic

Jamie - you're right about the 5D having a special 'look or feel' to its images. I have one (as well as 1Diii, 1DX and 5Dii) and while the rest seems more modern and ISO handling is easier as well as excellent autofocus, the 5D sensor gives the images a soft (but still sharp as it were!) and warm feel, something definitely lacking in all the other cameras.
@jamiewindsor
@jamiewindsor 7 лет назад
There's just something really nice about it when photographing people. You are right about the 'softness' - although that does make it sound like a bad thing! It has a lack of harsh edges that newer digital cameras have. It's more like film in that way.
@marcp.1752
@marcp.1752 6 лет назад
The pictures aren't "soft", they're actually sharper than from the D700, i am not kidding, due to a lighter AA filter inside the optical low pass filter stack, for starters, that's the part in front of the sensor, you don't clean the sensor of course, but the 1st layer of the OLPF. The original 5D does have a bit more "reds" tuned into, in terms of colors, and a more "organic" sort of rendering - i like my 5D, and it does have the Mirrorfix, too. Check the 1:1 samples comparsion with the D700 from dpreview, if you don't believe that the 5D is a tad sharper. Both DSLR are very good, each into its own way, the 5D is from 2005, whileas the D700 from 2008, therefore newer tech.
@henrym78
@henrym78 6 лет назад
Marc P. Is that mirrorfix easy to do yourself? I’m thinking of getting one again after all those years. I just checked the files from back then and I prefer them over the Fuji ones..
@marcp.1752
@marcp.1752 6 лет назад
You've to give your 5D to Canon CPS, they can fix it - it costs around 100 to 140 EUR, at least in Germany. I don't know into your country, how much it would cost. But spare parts are very rare into 2018, and Canon is usually no longer servicing the 5D, it's out of the suppoted DSLR list. I wouldn't do it by myself - the Mirror and it's supporting parts are *very* delicate things, and superglue does sulfuring, which can damage other parts, again, i wouldn't ever do this by yourself.

The 5d mkIII is the last good camera Canon ever made imo. They threw everything they could into that beast and hackers made it even better. If you don't care about 4k and larger than 24MP I'd say go for it. Hell, if you only care about photography you could even go with the 5d mkii. Considerably cheaper and almost as good as the mkIII as far as I know. 5d mkIII cameras go for around a thousand bucks while I've seen 5d mkIIs for around 600 bucks

I have no experience of Canon, but just looking at the samples from people I would say it renders the image using analogue as a basis for emulation as opposed to the more current digital striving for "pseudo-perfection". This should be of little surprise though as the "software engineers" for the 5d Classic had no other basis on which to work. As time went on "Software people" started to do what digital made possible, rather than perfect the emulation of what light did to film... Alex., Great vid, very helpful.
@jamiewindsor
@jamiewindsor 6 лет назад
Alex Jackson-Smith Interesting theory. It makes a lot of sense. It seems the emphasis with the 5D sensor was very much how the photo feels rather than a tick sheet of dynamic range and other technical point scoring elements.

Jamie, yes. I now have to go an buy one before they all go (thanks to your video)... It will complement my Nikons nicely :) Alex.,
@AlexJacksonSmith
@AlexJacksonSmith 6 лет назад
Jamie - Just wrote an article for my blog and the words you use are so so similar... My father recently purchased a Canon 5d Classic. Looking at RU-vid videos to investigate which lens might be most appropriate for his needs it became apparent that pictures shown from the “Canon 5D mark I” all exhibit a rather special and pleasant look. This got me thinking… how can that be? and why did it stop? Clearly the 5d classic or mark I is very old, being first produced some 13* years prior to the time of writing. In addition it was the first full frame DSLR from Canon and had almost none of the digital automation that even today’s entry-level cameras boast. This establishes that the design, creation and the software were all from an era when the emulation of analogue based photography formed the benchmark; not only in users expectations, but also in the minds and competencies of the designers and programmers. As time goes on companies competing in a market tend to trip over themselves to deliver the best results for the measurements that reviews use to compare. In cameras and photography this is especially so. Sharpness, colour rendition, vignetting, low light, ISO characteristics and xxxxx. All of which are very exact measurements and measurable methods of comparison. Unfortunately, for artistic users of cameras, left behind in this race for measured superiority are the softer and more artistic, almost analogue, methods of comparison. As this drive for digital sterile perfection has persisted and been refined to such an extent that many of the artistic photographers have been driven to edit in post production to recreate a “feel”. Whilst this has introduced the ability for less experienced photographers to achieve satisfying results and has given them a sense of achievement; it has also created a burden on time and cost that is hard to claim is an enhancement. The Canon 5d classic (Mark I) seems to be from yesteryear and the visual images it produces seems to date its era. Considering the results are so close to film and the price is similar to a year or two subscription to photoshop or lightroom, I think it is a good choice. Especially if like me the immediate artistic results are more important than the analytical measurements.

I loved this video, thanks! Having more megapixels (MP) means you also need very high quality expensive lenses for uncompromising light transmission as the individual pixels are smaller. Here are some details regarding individual pixels of 5D Mark I, II and III. Pixel Pitch: Mark I 8.2 Micron, Mark II 6.41 Micron, Mark III 6.22 Micron Pixel Area: Mark I 67.24 Micron, Mark II 41.09 Micron, Mark III 38.69 Micron Pixel Density per sq.mm: Mark I 1.49 MP, Mark II 2.43 MP, Mark III 2.58 MP Mark I has lesser pixels but they are bigger and capable of collecting more light. Hence Mark I's rendering of the pics may stand out more! Mark II and III are not that different really, however they will collect more detail due to higher MP. Detail is good for cropping and still keeping it "sharp". You also get bigger photo print sizes with II and III. Not everyone is worried about this! Note that from Mark IV onwards, you need really good expensive L lenses to optimise those 30 MPs with uncompromising light with fancy glass. Worth it for Pros but not for most of us really! There is a lot of focus on video these days hence the higher MP count helps. However, for photography a Mark II body can still do wonders with some good glass plugged into it. My two pence worth! Cheers.
@dduartez99
@dduartez99 2 года назад
Well that’s just one half of it. The sensor in the MK IV can process noise much better despite having much more MPs

Yes , it is a tough camera. I was Brunei in January this year and was caught in a monsoon rain (which caused flooding there and in a neighbouring country). By the time I reached a shelter, the camera was covered in rain water and would just not function. When I got back to my hotel, I removed the batteries and lenses and left the compartments opened overnight to dry out. The next day, it functioned flawlessly! The colours are warm which is why I really like it. I had a Canon 1Ds Mark 2 but the colours were 'cool' compared to the 5D. I have also used it with mechanical lenses (Leica Summicron-R and Helios 44-2) and the images are just...beautiful. I recently bought the 5D Mark 3 but still keep the Mark 1 as a back up.

Bought my 5D Mk1 about 5 1/2 years ago as a back-up to my 6D - It's one of the last made (so no mirror issue), sub 9000 actuations with genuine grip and 2 batteries, boxed as new for £300. The 6D is still an amazing camera, but the 5D.... well I think Jamie's great video says it all. It just feels more natural and film like. I also just love the super solid feel. It is built like a tank yet could have been designed yesterday. The grip in my opinion is actually pointless. It adds weight and the camera sits in your hands beautifully as is. Battery life is great too. I mainly use it with an old combo of 28-70 2.8L and 70-200 2.8 L IS, so I can't really talk about extra weight I guess, but the combination is just wonderful for weddings, portrait etc. Don't forget the monopod! Sell it? Never ;-) even though prices for good ones are going up now.

Had all the 5D versions and totally agree with the "greatness" of the original one. Many a times I've stated that I miss it's "big beautiful pixels" - there was something about the look/quality that was missing in the two subsequent updates (MK II and MK III). I do feel that "that feeling" or quality is back in the MK IV - perhaps not on par with the MK I, but enough to feel "right" again. Thanks for your videos!

I still Love my Canon 5d Classic in 2022. From all the cameras I have I still comeback to this because it is pure magic. Somebody told me that the color engineers who developed the 5D Classic wasn't working on the next models so we lost the magic of it. Is that true or not, I didn't get into this honestly but it makes sense because no other canon that I used gives the same pure magic that gives this monster camera. For me honestly is to heavy and big but the image comes from that sensor worth the pain in the hands after an hour of shooting. I had also Nikon and Sony. Both of them amazing cameras. However there's something in this canon that blows them out from the way.

The quality Imgages you can get with this body and a good full frame lens are just ahead of what you get with a newer, apsc kit. You can get the 650D + 50mm 1.8 for the same price as the 5D + 85mm 1.8. The latter is the clear winner for stills.

The downside is loosing the focal reach for nature/wildlife pics that aps-c gives you. Big $$$ for the super telephoto lens you need for it. But the results are amazing!! 5D1 rulez!!

Couldn't agree with you more Jamie. I have shot a wedding with it a week ago and was a bit nervous about the indoor shots because on the screen everything was garbage, but I was absolutely stunned when I saw it on a monitor. One thing is sure, you will always have to deal with bad white balance for indoors. For the comparison on same price Aps-c: the 650d was my backup. All the shots with it in general seem flatter and kind of lifeless, plus anything above ISO 800 looks ugly-grainy, green and just bad.

Great video! Used my Canon 5d camera's for 11 years and they are to me that good. I recently upgraded to two Canon 6d camera's but will still keep the two 5d camera's. I will use them now for more relaxed work. Not shooting too many shots but really enjoying them. They are in the fall of their lifespan but I am sure to make good use of the years left in them :)

After so many years and cameras I have used (6D, 7D, Sony a6000, Fuji xt1) my best photos are taken with this camera. At low iso and Long exposure shots produces better quality from the new APS-C cameras from fuji and sony. And the build quality is amazing compared to new canon & nikon.With 1200 euros you can buy a Canon 5d , canon 17-40 & canon 85mm.Also with some extra money you can get a mark ii which has better screen, sensor clean & live view.

I bought this camera in 2006, and still use it to this day (as of Dec 2017), this camera even went for a swim in 2016, and it came back to life a week later! I use it for landscapes, and people are always asking what camera I use, because of the great looking photo's it takes, and I just say its a 11 year old Canon.

This video clinched it for me, I picked up a cheap one on ebay and I agree with everything in this video! If you ever do an update of this video, you might want to mention the mirror issue that lead to the recall. Prospective buyers could save themselves a bit of grief by asking sellers if Canon reinforced the mirror before the repair programme closed last year.

All great points. My best mate has a Mark I and it never disappointed. I think all of these points apply to Nikon's classic D700. In fact, mine is beaten nearly to death and I'm considering picking up a lightly used one as a backup.

i have one and bought it as a backup to my 5d3. shooting events and weddings with it. its a great little camera for the price. the auto white balance is a little tricky to work with, and i fail to see its "special" look in the files. unlike the Leica M9 with its CCD sensor that makes the images look really special. but i am not complaining, it is a a fantastic option and i will be using it for a long time.

I recently pulled my 5D out of my camera bag at a wedding as I was getting lazy and wanted quick access to three primes at once! The images taken on the 5D were phenomenal quality and the colours were so rich unlike the ones taken with a MK IV I thought it was just me! Gutted that Canon UK no longer repair them as I’d love to get the shutter replaced to use it more!

In fact, after shooting with DSLRs for twelve years, my heart was yearning for a film SLR in order to enjoy filmic photos. Now I consider myself more than lucky to have found a Canon 5D Classic that I bought last month. At this moment, I own an SLR camera images of which can be immediately downloaded on my computer for necessary post-processing workflow. I no longer need the film SLR. Yes, the Classic can produce images that no other Canon FF DSLR can. I also own 5DII and extensively used 5DIII and 1DxII. Those are definitely great cameras however, Classic is Classic, my beloved Digital Film Camera.

Rediscovered this very capable full frame purchased 8 years ago, used. Still works great, had been sat aside while using the 5ds and Nikon d810, both are great pieces of equipment in their own right but require careful attention. This camera is not complicated and get right to the point, choose yur settings and shoot. Thanks for the reminder. HDcn

Yes, 5D is LOVELY gear today still :) ... BUT not 100% reliable. I used it as a backup once for a wedding and suddenly the mirror fell out of the body. Now, the camera was second hand so I did not expect perfection ... and after Googling I also found that I was NOT the only person with the problem. Needless to say I would only use 5D as a toy today... but what a FANTASTIC TOY it is to play with .... you can have a lot of fun without ruining your bank account ;)

I may been saying something a bit silly but, it's my personal preference . In the past I owned a Canon 40D ( this was my first camera ) , after a Canon 7D ( I Sold it ) After I both it the Canon 5D MK II ( it's ok, but I must confess I was a bit disappointed ) and after, i byed the Canon 1DX II ( this is a FANTASTIC camera , no dout! ) . A few weeks ago, ( 3 weeks moreles ago ) I both the Canon EOS 5D ( Classic ) and I must confess: this 5D is the camera that I prefer the most, of course I can't compare the af and other technology 5d ( classic ) to the Canon 1DX ii , but there is something in the 5D ( Classic ) files that make's me feel diferent , satisfied ! I just love the colors and look from the 5D ( Classic ) ever better then the 5D MK II !! Jamie Windsor , this is a true and great video ! Congratulations for your project !

I didn't use it for a while when I got the Mark III and went back to it and I was surprised by the loud sound it made when I took pictures haha. I did sell it, but it was wonderful. It was so strange magic. I still love pictures I took with that camera, I shot an entire book with it and those photos still sing. I had the 50 1.2 on it, was sooo wild.

@@gltzddonut It was heavy and I wanted video capabilities. I also just assumed all of them would look like it looked in the pictures.. I didn't realize it was magic until I tried other camera's :) and for printing really large it is nice to have a larger MP file. People complained about the AF but I thought it was just fine for photographing kids.. and kids are fast! but for sports I bet the newer camera's AF is way superior. Depends on what you are shooting.

Should we get them in 2018? The reason I ask is that I'm very much struggling make a decision about what my first FF camera should be. I currently use a Fuji XT1 with a variety of lenses and I love it. But, I'm beginning to take more and more paid gigs, so thought I would look into enjoying that FF look, DoF and overall image quality. As the Fuji is APSC, it means the lenses are and so I will have to buy into a whole a new system for FF. Do I go FF mirrorless, or older model dslr? I just can't decide what wiv all da choice.

Hi ! i totally confirm, and bought one ( again ) in 2017 :) This was my first digital camera, i hesitated and waited a bit until price go down , back in 2010.... The camera is simple, no live view, no gadgetery, just the basics to work on great images, and 3200iso is really enough. Images have a really unique "film" feeling, 12.8 is fine, i printed a 60X40cm just to say, that is fine for basics prints. Combined with a lot of various lenses ( i use my film Planars and worked on M42's as well ) images are just stunning. For the price/quality ratio this is sinply the best choice at days being

when i was looking for buying a digital photo camera i wanted to get me Canons first EOS 5D, but the price kept me away. Still sad about it. Bought the smaller brother 30D (8.2Mpix) and the EF-S 17-85/4-5.6 IS USM with 20year EOS anniversary discount. A great camera too, but i guess the build quality is less. Did you ever drop the 5D from lets say a meter on hard ground. My 30D went broken internally, but fixing here in Belgrade isn't that expensive and it is up and running again. What do you think about the comparison 30D-5D in terms of image quality? Similar?

This is a pretty nice camera to use. I have one, but unfortunately it has a problem with the display in the viewfinder in that quite a few segments in the numerical displays do not work, which makes reading the set aperture and shutter speed difficult without taking my eye away and looking at the top LCD. I wonder if that is a common problem with this model when found today. I've pretty much just got it set at minimum aperture and use it for online merchandise photos. What do you think of the 30D? Those are far less-expensive, but from my experience they have a similar feel though slightly smaller, and most features work just the same. It seems to be pretty much the same camera except a crop-sensor camera with a pop-up flash. Display is about the same, and buttons are mostly the same and in the same locations. Being 8.2MP on a crop-sensor, it would seem to have about the same pixel size as the full-frame 12.8MP 5D. I think the 30D came out just a bit before the 5D, which would somewhat explain the similarity.

I loved my 5D mki but sold it to get a 5D mkii, i agree with you that the mki has something special about it. Just checked with Canon UK and they no longer support the 5D mki as parts ran out in April 2016, likely to be other options available? Would recommend getting one, especially as a back-up camera, but it would be worth spending a few more £'s and getting a better condition one (not easy to check shutter count i know) which will hopefully live a long life.

Hi Jamie, I purchased 2 Canon 5D Mk1 bodies. Which lens is better for wedding event? Canon 50mm 1.8 STM or 50mm 1.4 USM? I saw you use the Canon 50mm f1.4 USM on one of your vids. Is the difference that big? I am planning to get the 50mm f1.4 and mount on my 5D Mk1 but not yet convinced if it will give a dramatic increase in the quality of images when compared to my current set-up (5D Mk1 + 50mm 1.8 stm).

I had one of these and for me, as an amateur photographer, it was the perfect camera. It had only one downside: you can't find how many shutter actuations were done with this camera, and that's a big problem if you're buying a second-hand one. That's what happened to me: I bought a 5d classic last year, for dirt cheap(250 euros) and my shutter died after 8 months. If you're really on budget and you're still a non-working student, that's a fact worth considering.

Nice video man ! But I have one question. Does it worth it to buy this camera in good condition over a nikon d3300 ? I like to make photos to events like: bike racing, car racing, airplanes show.
@jamiewindsor
@jamiewindsor 7 лет назад
Well, I've never used the Nikon D3300 so I can only go by the specs. It's a much newer camera, but the sensor of the 5D is 2⅓ times the size of the Nikon's and that will give you a very different quality of image. The Nikon has a higher burst rate (and probably a better focussing system) so for your purposes, it may be better. Nikons are good with blues and greens so that may benefit your style of photography. Canon excels at skin tones. But ultimately, these are just tools. It's what you do with them that makes the biggest difference.

Another great video from Sir Jamie. Does this film look apply to the Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II? is it a better purchase compared to the 5d Mk1, they use the same sensor right?
@jamiewindsor
@jamiewindsor 7 лет назад
Luc Makayabu Thank you. Some of these points apply. The 1Ds mk2 is more expensive and finding reliable batteries that stay locked in is a challenge, but there are also a lot of advantages - bigger images, dual card slots, etc. The 5D has a slightly better screen (although they are both pretty poor compared to today's standard). Both still good cameras and great for the price.

I'm redesigning my camera setup, going from Nikon do canon during the process. I'd just watched your 1Ds Mark II video then I came across this one and it got me thinking (and this is reason number one I love your videos). Be sure I'm going from a dual D600 Prime lens setup and I want a simple and less expensive setup. I was going for a 80D because its a contemporary camera and it has a very good AF system. But then getting a working classic 5D might just get me a 24-70 Mark II which would be lovely. Still, being a D600 usar for the past couple of years, I'm haunted by the prospect of camera that makes me recompose since I'm not a fan of it to begin with. But (!!!) a 24-70 Mark II is a 24-70 Mark II. What do you think?
@richbarrett
@richbarrett 7 лет назад
I'd get the 5D1 and the Tamron 24-70 2.8. It has IS and is a great lens. That's my primary setup.

I really like number four, I think that’s one of the reasons I prefer my 5DII to my 5DIII, it’s simple to use so simple to learn and I know it really well. I also need my cameras to be rugged, having a lot of upper body pain makes me a tad clumsy, so all my cameras have to be able to bounce. Top tip: Don’t buy a second hand camera off me! (I never sell my cameras, so no need to worry)
@RyanAnthonyDigitalMedia
@RyanAnthonyDigitalMedia 6 лет назад
The film look you’re talking about has something to do with the way that camera processes photos when shooting. I read about it awhile ago. It’s an old mechanical process converting to digital in cam, as opposed to capturing straight to digital in cam.
