@@dlmatt4125 Ya got same one. Did some modifications to mine like other people said and it's on part of my deck. My hubby was going to custom build one, but due to this virus, we felt it would be a bad idea as he would have needed to go into store too often. So, we bought one from Harbor Freight. Only other modification we need to make is on the door, does not slide well. But other then that, it's not too bad.

You covered all the things I need including the therapy. I've been researching for about a year (actually much longer) on this and came upon a thousand reasons why it might not be right for me. But, now I'm learning about the technology that can make it work for temperature fluctuations, which changes things. Your enthusiasm about just having a warm sunny place to go to work with plants in dead of winter just got me very interested in giving this more consideration!
@terrylemire1991

Totally agree with your top ten. I had an 8x12 greenhouse at my home in Windsor On. and I used to love going into it during the winter. I tried wintering over some of the garden flowers and also start new flowers from seeds with limited success. There is a bit of a learning curve you need to go through when owning a greenhouse, and I wasn't able to really get good at it before I was forced to sell my home and relocate. Needless to say I really miss my greenhouse.

I wish I could share your enthusiasm. My dear hubby bought me an 6 x10 greenhouse in Feb. Got it all set up and I'm feeling so overwhelmed. And the more I search the interwebs (ha) the worse it's getting. I am starting out small, hoping I will learn a little something more as time goes on. Zone 5B here. I was thinking I could strictly grow in a greenhouse only. We have a LARGE black walnut tree in our yard................BOOOOOOOO! And some other issues which make a traditional garden impossible. I tried some potted veggies on the patio last year and that was a bust. I am at a loss. I'm getting to old and running out of time to figure out what I need to do. BUUUUUUUTTTTTT, Great Video!

Other reasons I can think of: space to cure squashes and sweet potatoes, dry herbs, (and air-dry laundry). Also, winter tomatoes! not just growing in them in winter, but holding the varieties that keep fresh when the greens are hung inside a warm place, so ripening green tomatoes. Storing garden stuff that needs to stay dry and/or unfrozen (tarps, potting mix, etc.) And, even if it's not warmed up, just a place to keep the nursery/potting supplies.

Good points! But do you think the air is dry enough for the laundry? I remember my grandparents' greenhouse as a warm and humid place.

One problem I found out after building my green house, too SMALL, and it's 18'x18'. Mainly because of the #1 good reason. Brought plants in from outside to over winter. But, the hibiscus bloomed all winter, so that's nice. The other problem, outside plants brought in a few bugs, spider mites & aphids, that loved it in there. But all 10 reasons are excellent reasons to have a green house.

Wis.Gardener if you wait until the last minute to bring plants inside many times the bugs have been killed off because of the chill...also hose them off with some dish detergent in your hose sprayer that you use for fertilizing

#11 A greenhouse full of plants has fresh clean air that is full of oxygen... and nitrous oxide! (Laughing gas). It literally does make you feel good. : P Great video. I miss my old greenhouse and am looking at getting the 10x12 from harbor freight as well. I am thinking two medium sized aquaponics systems with either ornamental or edible fish (Growing lots of greens) along one long wall, a largish in-ground lemon and orange tree growing tall in the middle, and a series of raised beds with bell peppers all along the other wall. Did you know they can live up to 3 years! Just have to keep the frost off of them. I am betting that 5 years in... the money saved would pay for a new $630 greenhouse a time or two every year. That is just food savings. Not counting the others you just mentioned.

@Growyourheirlooms
@Growyourheirlooms 6 лет назад
Haven't used a wood stove for heat. I would think it would work but might be hard to regulate it. As for lights, I just use hanging T-8 shop lights but rarely use them. In winter, greens don't need a ton of light so only turn them on when it's very cloudy. Good luck with your new greenhouse

@pinemeadowshobbyfarmafruga8319
A greenhouse is in my future. A contractor friend of mine gave me six sets of thermal pane sliding glass door panels. I hope to get the structure together this fall. Is that a Harbor Freight greenhouse? I was considering purchasing one, but the drawback was the panels degrade over time in the sun. Do you find that a problem? Can you get replacement panels for it? Thanks for your time sir. Jerry of Pine Meadows Hobby Farm.

Jacolyn's orchids on you tube has a greenhouse and overwinter her goldfish in a small solid pond. She uses the water from then to water her orange and her lemon trees. She has a dehumidifier that Empties into the pond. She has her home in British Columbia and it is presently below zero...minus 19 or lower. She uses double layer of plastic and use that attrition insulation used in homes... she had oranges all year round. She over winters her geraniums and grows seedlings for veggie garden. Orchids, the largest single plant genre on the planet, is reason enough to have a greenhouse. With a waterfall and small pond. Build a small landing board on the wall of your greenhouse and use a small portion of a plastic queen excluder(to keep out larger flying insects like wasps and hornets) to allow honeybees to pollinate your greenhouse food sources. A two inch space is enough to allow access for pollinators. Do not swat honeybees. they dont care about what you are doing as long as you do not disturb what they are doing. Collecting resources.

@Tinyteacher1111 easy to do. Saw a video with a beehive built into an outward facing wall. The bees could go outside but the actual hive was inside a small room. Keeping them warm in winter but having access to blooms in winter in that room. Like a sunroom. Make sure the hive entrance faces east or west.

If you had a stone wall on one or two sides of the green house which is a thermal accumulator, stone, brick cement, then it would absorb heat during the day and let it off at night and you would not need heating. Ditto tanks full of water, water might not seem, instinctively, to be a thermal accumulator but it is. Maybe biggish pots, square ones full of wet earth would be also serve as they have water in them without being absolutely,just, only water.

Im with you on not being a doomsdayer, but there are realities to consider.. the most likely disaster would be a financial disaster for most poeple living in the US ... but, there are natural disasters that happen ALL the time around the globe... clearly, coastal and other areas that get floods are probably the most common disasters in the USA, I believe ... then there is fire... tornadoes in some areas... and poof, your greenhouse might not be around. But, in an economic downturn, you are golden. But, even if you lost your greenhouse, the knowledge of how to grow is ALWAYS beneficial.

Anybody with a south-facing concrete house/retaining wall can have a greenhouse and small vertical garden. Minimal area. Attach a small greenhouse on the wall (half greenhouse). Get a Harbor Freight greenhouse assembly kit, half the unit, extend its length x2, and you can have 10-40 feet long x 6-8 feet high vertical gardening on the wall, plus any shelved greenery against the greenhouse outer structure, and have a greenhouse to boot! Half greenhouse design has sliding doors on each side, so there are no entrance problems. Could even put it against the house wall. Expand the patio by enclosing it in a greenhouse, and have even greater heating cost savings in winter time. You have an excellent growing area (should be no housing authority prohibitions). Also any south-facing kitchen wall, a south arboretum/aviary/bay window ... can have a vertical garden and half greenhouse. Make the house/room the greenhouse! Or hang pots from the ceiling/beams, or even a small hanging potted vertical ladder garden. All is possible.

We're buying a house on a 1/2 acre in N. Texas. We want to grow as much as we can of various fruits and veggies. Never done a garden before and don't know where to start. A greenhouse in N Texas, just like here in S Oregon is usually only used in the winter. It just gets too hot in the summer. And in your climate I would suggest there are tons of things to grow outdoors all year long like spinach, lettuce, kale etc. As for how much that is different for everybody

I'm sorry for all these questions but one more thing what about the summer time? When it gets really hot? Because I live in North Alabama and we get very high temperatures it's been a hundred degrees with 80% humidity in the last week and I'm afraid that if I have a greenhouse I might end up just providing a nice little oven to cook my plants is there a good way to cool it? Maybe have a inline fan that sucks the hot air out from the top?

I don't use the grenhouse in the summer. I pull all my plants out in spring and put them back in October

I am SO in love with you! lol That aside...building a greenhouse is my dream and will happen in the very near future. I need to tear down an old shed before I start, though, which will take a lot of time ( it's big ). But yes, I agree on all 10 of your reasons to have one! Most definitely. Love from Israel!

Do u have to move the plants outside for pollination or your vegetables will grow in the greenhouse without pollination ?
@Growyourheirlooms

There's plenty going on for pollination inside the greenhouse

Therapy... My SIL pays big $$$$ to a Psychiatrist to listen to her problems. He never comments, he just listens. I have told her she could get the same service @ her neighborhood bar. Thats what bartenders are paid to do. !

My mother and I have a screened pool enclosure. Since we got rid of the pool, I been trying to figure out how to convert the enclosure into a greenhouse so I can grow herbs and veggies all year. I want the acrylic paneling,but I'm clueless as to measuring and building it. Any recommendations will be very much appreciated.

The truth is, the earth's soil is getting old, it is corroding because of acid rain and the breakdown of the minerals in the earth's crust. Therefore, it is now wise for us to look to alternative ways to grow our food. Greenhouses are a great alternative, and looking for vegatables that are grown by greenhouse companies in the store is the best.

These past two winters, I had tomatoes in my sunroom. As long as the temp stayed above freezing, the plants survived.
