Essentially you have tapped into why women wear handbags! It's the equivalent of pockets for men!!!! I ❤️ my bumbag. I can't say "fa**y pack. I am British.😂😂Currently in mine are: tissues, wet wipes, lip salve, a ziplog bag, phone, three sweets, a large safety pin, a bandana, hand sanitizing liquid, a small pursea mask, phone containing 2 credit cards, glasses because I am constantly wearing my sunglasses. I live in Spain.😎

I carry a large fanny pack. I put a 32 oz Nalgene bottle in the main compartment then a small knife, first aid, fold up bucket hat, almond butter, gum and a poncho in the smaller pockets. Oh, plenty of room for keys, wallet and i have an additional piece that slips on the belt to hold my phone. I love it, keeps my back a lot cooler than a backpack / sling and still carry just as much stuff.

I started using Bumbags - or "Hipbags" as we called them in Germany - way back in the 90ies while skateboarding. You had all necessary items available BUT detachable in just a second BUT could easily grab it when you needed it. Since then i haven't really stopped using them cause they are really convenient, always come in handy AND they don't limit my range of motion as full loaded pockets of my trouser would. While out in the woods or hiking or canoeing or shooting my english longbow i always have my phone, ifak, swiss army knife (they're the best) and other stuff in it - even my patagonia houdini is clipped to it with a carabiner . BIGGEST plus while hiking for me is: you can have all the vital pieces like ifak, knife, and fire with you at all times. It's the portable version of a bug out bag from the army days and it's independent from my rucksack. At night i place it in my sleeping bag and have extra security for my vital items. So a bumbag is a clear must have item at all times!

I've been a fan of "Bum Bags" for decades. (Fanny means something a bit different to Brits and Aussies; down under down under, if you will.) In the 90s my weekend kit was my Jansport 25l book bag and a "fanny pack". I wasn't ultralight. I was broke and that's all I had. Most of the "10 Essentials" went in the bum bag.

I always used my pack lid as the "junk drawer". Seriously considering a fanny pack. Between my too-small hip belt setup, awkwardness of reaching back/asking for help for lid stuff, and hiking in running shorts (so having no pockets around camp), I don't see any downsides. Even for a weekend warrior like me it seems like a no-brainer.

My fanny/front pack is a rigged up , really old z-packs hip belt pocket. It does work, but... I have some dyneema grid stop that I am planning on making a custom, just-for-me fanny pack. I like to carry snacks, phone accessories for camera use, chapstick, and any maps/guidebook pages that I need, compass, pencil and whistle. I like having those things in the fanny pack, since it is always on me while I am hiking.

I got the ‘M48 Response Pack’ fanny bag. I like the tactical apocalyptic look it has. Also sunglasses are good to keep in there along with something that will settle the score in case a cryptid type creature starts stalking you. Many people go missing every year under very unusual circumstances in our National Parks, we need to always be aware.

I was around for the late 80s and early 90s for the fanny pack craze in the general public. I'll admit to having used them. Because of that, I'm not a fan of the fanny pack. Depending on the fanny pack design and how much weight you're carrying there, you're whacking the jewels as you walk. With some past lower back injuries, the fanny pack puts pressure on my lower back at times I don't like that. What I DO use is a chest pack. It has stuff that I don't want to be without; ID, cash, snacks, medical stuff, etc. As you said, better than digging through a pack for what you need immediately. I've seen people get forgetful and leave important stuff behind. If its in the chest pack, it's accounted for.
@lessimons
@lessimons 4 года назад
Maybe consider straps that connect the fanny pack to the packs shoulder straps. Yes you are right to make sure that the fanny pack is not carried too low.
@donwyates

If it's "whacking the jewels", I'd say you're wearing it too low.
@tc556guy
@tc556guy 2 года назад
@@donwyates Back in the 80s the fanny packs came in multiple sizes. The larger ones, even when worn at the beltline, would reach down to the jewels if fully loaded down. The small tiny ones that held maybe a wallet and some keys, not so much

I have used the same Osprey Strider fanny pack since 1991 for all the reasons you listed. I would add to the list permits, licenses, or tags which may need to be produced to a ranger, warden, or other law enforcement. I've also used it in conjunction with a small beltless backpack to make a hybrid two-piece backpack, works great.

I have a dime bag fanny pack and I absolutely love it. I have my cigs, phone, lip balms, credit cards and things, flash light, tactical knife, my chillum, make up, hair ties, and usually a back up deodorant and smell good. I love that it holds so much perfectly and it’s hands free. I don’t have to worry about setting it down and leaving it or finding a place to hang it. Besides all that it looks cool 😎. Nice tip with the toothbrush, I’m gonna steal that one. Yeah I’m on my second fanny pack and I love them - hmg versa. Primary reason is for snacks, drink mixers, and my phone. I find I bump into my phone while it’s in my shorts pocket with my trekking pole periodically. I also keep a compass, whistle, and tiny flashlight just for safety. Before I used one, I remember having a rough day on trail and it was getting pretty dark. I’d just gotten to the bottom of a canyon where I’d expected there to be water and there wasn’t. I set my pack down and went back up to the small pool of water at the top to filter some water. By the time I got back to the bottom it was dark and I had that moment of terror where I couldn’t find my pack for about 15 minutes. I did have my phone so I could’ve used that light, but I’d just prefer to have a dedicated small light along with the other items I mentioned earlier for those you-never-know situations.

When we backpack, my wife carries a big 9L lumbar pack because she has spinal stenosis and autoimmune issues that cause muscle problems in her neck and shoulders and numbness in her legs and feet, so she physically can’t carry a traditional backpack. She carries as much as she can in the lumbar pack and we pack as light as possible so I can carry a bigger pack for two. It’s more work for me but just being out there is work for her, so it’s worth it for us to keep going on trips.

I’ve used one for years. I use it primarily for food storage. I also use it to hold my EDC gear. Phone, knife, flashlight, etc. it’s perfect for day hikes. Mine has two pockets for water bottles, so I don’t have to lug a backpack around all day (I’m getting old so my back isn’t what it used to be.) I also smoke a pipe, so I keep a couple of pipes and a tobacco pouch in there as well. My fanny pack is one of the best pieces of gear I’ve ever used.

Perhaps read Ray Jardine's book, Beyond Backpacking, p.57. "They increase the KLUTZ factor, hampering one's mobility and restricting the viability at one's feet. The more paraphernalia hanging all over your body, the more cumbersome, and the more you will trudge along instead of enjoying a pleasant ramble."

Large fanny pack keep shoulders and arms and hands free. The best designs went away in the early 1990s..probably because they weren't fitting men very well at all. At times I attach 2 1L Nalgene water containers onto the belt to allow more space for jacket, lunch snack, camera, space blanket, etc.For air plane travel the fanny pack allows a platform for hauling a small day pack if im not using a wheeled carryon..or both, plus for moving down narrow airplane aisles you just swivel the pack to your front, which you do anyway anytime you are accessing stuff in there..and without having to disconnect it off. On on and on...

9/20/2020 good Idea. I wish I had thought of it. I gifted a couple of His and Hers IFAKs kits to family. They were specific for big trauma. Personal FAKs usually have some molly or other strap system to your pack. A fanny pack loaded nicely will be the next gifts. Glasses, goggles, masks, headlamps, gloves, wipes and sanitizer, scissors tourniquet and pressure bandage will handle the first 2 minutes of a rescue. Your suggestions were really good. With you on the trail a second fanny pack could replace your backpack or maybe only an extra one for her! Thanks , Don

To add to these comments they are great for using as pouches around the city. I do commute to work back and forth but I use totally different set ups. If i am just hanging out for the day and running around a backpack along with a fanny pack really does make sense. And I do use sling bags as well. The fanny pack is like carrying a pouch actually that all it is. I love carrying backpacks and brief cases I have a ton of brief cases sling bags, and backpacks. The fanny pack is great because of the reasons you listed but also it gives you a big pouch. The backpack does have pouches but it is nice to have the extra pouch up front. Also pockets on guys like me yes. We have deep pockets but it is really stupid to put things their that is why I totally agree with using a pouch…. Get those things out of your pockets and put them into a pouch. When you go to sit down your pants look bulging and the pockets are pooching out where as if you had a pouch it wouldn’t bee like that. Yes. Many people thought that fanny packs were only thing but that is not true. They are great pouches. I ordered 4 of them off of amazon and will bee using them with my backpacks. They are a great compliment with the backpack. I am getting ready to fill one up now actually I am working on that as we speak. I can’t wait to get my other 3 pouches. Some girls thought they were bad with pouches well, i love pouches too.. Love wearing those things. But truly wether hiking, just hanging around the city and doing errands having a bounce around backpack and a fanny pack is a super idea. I have backpacks for every situation. Whether I am commuting to and from work, hiking or backpacking or just hanging out for the day I have a pack for every situation. Brief cases are the same. I have a hybrid one and some carrying ones and rolling brief cases. I use the brief cases for work of course and I do have a huge backpack that is for work as well. It is a commuter backpack. I think that people should learn to love the pouch and carry one.

I can snug a plastic water bottle round the belt too. And, yeah I think they look very cool.

I gotta be honest, it's no name Chinese from Wish.com. BUT, I have bought several packs from there, and every single one is VERY well made, comfortable, rugged, double or triple stitched, and completely water proof at an unbeatable price point. I showed up to one of David Canterburys advanced Bushcraft courses with one, and he himself and several instructors agreed upon the quality of it, and said, quote, No one should knock buying products of this nature from the Chinese, they know their textiles, and how to sew, it's their culture... I know some people may look down on me for buying Chinese for political reasons or whatever, but I don't have tons of money, but NEVER compromise quality for price, and have not been let down in these instances.

@@bryantdavis3710 Too be honest i do have chinese stuff, from before the pandemic. ;)) Little pouches like tasmanian tiger or maxpedition, not that quality but for 1/10th of their price i do not complain. Heck, recently bought a new sleepingbag from a well known German company wich is also made in China. You just can't escape it. Thought about bringing it back but who would i be kidding? Myself. China is in both ends of the spectrum. Western brands have their own or share factories filled with western machinery and skilled labourers. And i am on a tight budget to. Bought excellent stuff on Ali but also enormous crap. Ghehe

Visit Puerto Rico. 90% of men over 40 are rocking a fanny pack on the daily. I wish I could do that here. I do have a cheap Walmart fanny pack with two water bottle holders on it. It is absolutely amazing for short hikes when I get to do them.

smaller packs have a max weight of ~20lbs and don't have a hip belt. Snacks are heavy and I can even connect my fanny pack to my backpack (or keep separate)

I dont carry a fanny pack, but I do carry a small shoulder satchel. It has slightly more storage than a fanny pack, is comfortable to wear with my backpack and the extra space is for my binoculars. Also carry map/compass, camera, small note book, and snacks!

I love having my junk up front and easy to get to !!!!! arthritis just takes all the fun out of reaching around behind and sticking bottles or snacks or whatever in and out of a pack . My pouch takes care of that 😀

I use a small one as an EDC and part of a get home bag. It is mainly first aid, fire lighting, and emergency shelter. I have a larger one that I use as a DSLR camera bag if I am using that camera. This larger one incorporates a shoulder strap, so you can wear at the back and swing to the front for access.

I use a chest pack from Zpacks which serves the same purpose. I have several fanny packs from 1 litre to 12 litres(Now discontinued, made by Under Armour it has a dedicated space for a laptop) that I use for photography but not for hiking because of the belts interfering with the backpack’s. But I’m sold on them just like you. 👍

It also transitions into off-trail "real life" really, really well. Tuck your hand sanitizer and mask in there along with car keys, phone, money, etc and you're good to go. It can offer a psychological boost knowing you're only a pack away from being on trail. "Hey, I'm not just running errands, I'm living a town day, here! " Thanks for the video. Great stuff!!

I use one as well... Love it. As a bigger got it's not always easy to get to those small side pockets... It's great to have a good day pack for anything you might need. It's a no brainier.

I dispensed with my bum bag a few years ago. We avoid the use of the word fanny in Australia as it's another word for ladies front bum. Anyway I replaced it with an AARN universal balance bag which give an extra 12 litres of storage and help even out the load as it's placed on your chest.

I'm a big fan of the fanny pack while hiking! I have a cheap Ozark Trail one that has 2 water bottles. I carry extra camera lenses and batteries in it. It's also where I put my lens caps and filters.

Got a 5L Mountainsmith lumbar/shoulder bag to go with a SMD 30L ultralight pack. The capacity to remove weight from the frameless main pack should not be undervalued. Modularity also brings the added benefits of flexibility -- I might even consider carrying my 40oz titanium bottle in the provided sling bag!

I like a fanny pack because I tend to carry way too much crap in my pockets. lol. Actually, it's the best place to carry my phone without needing to worry about breaking my screen. They are just handy.
