In the canon 5d mark iv is it possible to set the metering timer of the exposure meter for more than 4 seconds as the default in shooting mode? In live view mode the limit is 30 minutes, but in viewfinder shooting mode after 4 seconds the meter stops measuring and the shooting data displayed in the viewfinder goes out ... Is there a solution?
Great video! Your reasons are laid out clearly and concisely as to why you like the 5DMkIV. I recently upgraded from the EOS 5D Mark II to the EOS R, and then to the EOS R5. There's definitely a difference in the feel between single lens reflex cameras and mirrorless cameras. And I must say, I prefer the feel of the former. Maybe I've just been using DSLRs for so long now, but they just feel more natural in the hand. There is a more direct connection between that shutter closing and your pressing the button. Mirrorless cameras, even the best ones, feel more like computers masquerading as cameras. That physical/mechanical connection between the camera and the user is lacking that DSLRs tanks like the 5DMkIV have.
Thank you 🙏 and thanks for sharing your experiences - I’m sure we’ll all adjust to the mirrorless as time goes by ... lucky you to have the R5 though - I’m very eager to try out the 8K video and see how easy it is to edit - my PC just about keeps up with 4K (:
Been shooting with a 90D and getting great photos in RAW with L lens. Thinking of going full frame, better in low light and more coverage. Crop frame is great for extending that 300 mm L lens to about 480 mm. Nothing bad about a good crop-sensor.
For me my R5 feels so much more connected and direct to me, it is so much better in every single point than my 5dmk3, it is like 500% boost, makes so much more fun to work with it
So many options, almost too many. I'm currently trying to decide which route to go. Digital SLR or mirror less. I'm leaning toward the SLR at this point. Now which brand? Decisions decisions.
I’ve used my 5DMark IV for Corporate work, weddings, short films, promo videos, green screen work and have taken it with me when I’ve gone out travelling, on holidays and I use it to film RU-vid videos. And I’ve only just got it serviced! It literally just keeps on going - It is still a serious competitor among the multitude of modern camera systems and is so versatile! Absolutely love it! Keen to see what Canon do with their EOS R5 but for now I'm sticking with my 5DMarkIV.
I traded my well kept 5DmkIV with 140k shutter actuations in a months ago for a 1DXmk3. After oil and debris kept on getting the sensor I sent it back for a new one. To cut a long story short I've had 4 1DXmk3's all with the same problem with visible marks on images at f6.3. The last one went back today and I've got a refund. Guess what? I bought a new 5DmkIV. I couldn't be happier.
The 5D Mark 4 is a beast all day long. I can honestly say I believe in five more years from now it's still be a beast at the camera. Nothing's ever going to take away from how great it is. So whatever it doesn't record video in 8k! It's a Work Horse!
Yesss!! Like it’s predecessors i too believe it will still be highly sort after in 5 years - probably to a brand new generation of photographers and filmmakers. I don’t know what tech will exist then - but the Mark IV is so robust it will still be alive and kicking then 💪💪
What even is the point of 8K recording lmao. Its just a flex at this point, technology hasnt caught up yet and pretty much everything isnt 4k already let alone 8k.
I simply love love this camera, it fulfills all my photography needs. A big plus is the choice of EF lenses. The new R-system might be the way to go but at this point I will not invest in a new lens system. I do understand with an adapter you can mount an L-lens to a R-body but this is not just the same. When the price of the 5D mark IV continue to drop I might consider buying a second body.
I have tried many cameras - Sony, Leica, Nikon, Fuji and several Canon models including the new R series. The RF lenses are, for the most part awesome (awesome prices too!) but the camera can't keep up with the 5D Mark IV. Out of the many thousands of pictures I have taken the 5D Mark IV has produced more outstanding pictures than the rest. Paired with classic EF L glass - in the "crunch" when speed, focus, light and clarity need to combine to create art the 5D comes through! If you have time to set up, plan, use a tripod , get the best light , experiment with lenses and shots - good photographers can make great pictures with many cameras. But in the crunch - in funky weather, or when you can't ever get "that" shot again.....give me the tank. Yes, your mileage may vary, but make sure you've tried one before you doubt...….
Love it! Especially “In a crunch” 🤩🤩🤩 I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been in a tricky situation at an event or wedding and the Mark IV just rides though it 👏👏👏
I took a lot of great photo's last year with a T5i mounted on a Manfrotto 536. I'm getting to old to be lugging that thing around now and have been shooting handheld mostly this year.
Great points, thanks for sharing. I have used Canon Rebel series in the past and just upgraded to the 5DMkIV, I'm on day 2 of using it so very early experiences but PHENOMENAL results. I've been watching various videos to help me learn more about this model and found this one. I too had some L glass and didn't want to start all over. I'm a novice with a good eye for wildlife and scenery shots. I have been taking stills of the birds here on the coast of SC, USA ... Herons, Egrets, Ospreys, etc. Using the 100 -400mm L IS II provides amazing detail and color.
Totally agree, I believe it's essential to have a photographic camera in your bag nowadays. For how low cost they can be yet ad so much value to your kit, they are worth every cent to have. Anything 20 megapixel onwards will kick ass.
As a serious hobbyist for over 40 years it serves all my needs. Best all round camera for landscape, portraits, wildlife. Even birds in flight (albeit at 7fps but the autofocus system is amazing). The touch screen, B mode and timer combo is tailor made for long exposure photography. Also excellent for videography, unless you want 4K which is impractical except for short runs. Of course there are way better DSLRs for video, but as part of an all round package the 5DIV shines. Rugged, never had a problem shooting snowy owls in extreme weather in Canada at -25C in blizzard like conditions. Got wet by the spray in Niagara Falls and nothing happened! Same with extreme hot conditions and blowing sand in the Namib desert, no issues. Sits very stable in my hands. Gives me good shots in low light hand held without jacking up the ISO too much. Would not exchange it for a lighter camera. Finally, beats my Red Raven in low light videography. I've shot with just one candle with very decent results (the Red Gemini is the one for low light apparently, but cant afford it). No complaints! Its going to last me a few more years for sure.
Thanks Dipanka, these comments were so good that I had to include some of them in my 5DMarkIV vs EOS-R review. It's great to hear these perspectives from experienced users! Keep sharing that knowledge! 👌😀
Great video! I'm keeping my 5D Mark II for backup/secondary, even as I transition to the 5D Mark IV as my primary. Your video sealed my decision to buy the Mark IV, by the way. Thanks heaps.
I love my 5d4 and I still use it today in 2021. I been using it for the past 4 years (bought it back in 2017 and paid nearly full msrp price for it) Though yes it is somewhat old now but it still takes amazing images as long as you have the right glass. I also pair mine with the EOS-R for weddings. Though it be super nice to have the latest tech like the R5 but the price difference is huge for it to justify the price upgrade for a barely noticeable difference to a clients eye. Maybe one day I’ll upgrade to the R5 when the price drops but for now until then I’ll continue to use my 5d4/eosR combo.
1 reason why I'm still using the canon 70D in 2023... I'm broke. Joke aside, there are lots of reason to use older gears. But surely you want that new mirrorless. I'm telling you, mirrorless are great paired with EF lens with adapter. It's like the processing power of smartphone camera in a camera body with functional physical buttons. Eye detect, 3D tracking, IBIS, high FPS. Sell your 5DM4 and get R6M2. The features in mirrorless worth sacrificing megapixel number.
I have considered the R5 and R6 for documentaries and weddings. I have concluded that I am still getting the 5D4 and an RP (primarily for focus stacking).
Great video! I have a 5d Mark 2 and a Leica Q mirrorless... while I really enjoy the mirrorless, I'm just still hooked on the SLR feel and satisfying "cahchunk" of the mirror. I also really still love looking directly through the glass when the camera is off something you can't get on mirrorless... I use my Mark 2 more than I do the Leica for these reasons. Nice to hear I'm not alone. May upgrade to the mark 4.
Nice to hear Tachiro Akisu (: I’ve recently been using my Mark IV alongside the EOS-R, for about 4 months and still feel more comfortable with the Mark 4 - probably down to using DSLRs for years - but I’m slowly transitioning over - eager to have a plat with the R5 (:
Great informative video Kai, Thank you! I have heard so many bad reviews about the Canon 5D Mark IV, the 4K crop, the 4K file size comparing it to Sony etc. However, I am glad I never listened to that crap. In my opinion the 5D Mark IV is one of the best cameras out there, not saying that other camera makers are not as good, I am just a Canon user. I am a photographer first, however, I have taken an interest in video and the 5D Mark IV is the best fit for me. I actually bought it to photograph and video Italy in detail. I have actually thought about buying a second 5D Mark IV and store it when I burn this one out, that is how much I like it. I think at some point I might want C-LOG, you may have changed my mind to look into it. I will make a video called 10 Reasons Why I'm still using the Canon 5D Mark IV in 2025 :).
The 5d model is a beast. I've had the mrk3 about 8 years and it's crazy how it has hold up. Sure I miss some features you talk about in the video. But it has never failed me. Now Iam scratching my head if I should upgrade to the Mrk4 or the R. :)
Pocket 4K is a better choice for video imo however I'm getting this camera as an upgrade from my 250d. The skin tones on canon are superb! Good to see you being loyal to your 5D. My uncle has £2000 glass on his Mark iii and the images are amazing. Lens first always
Great video Kai. This is the beauty of creative technology, it's all subjective. If something older still produces what you need, then it's all good. 😁
SVH Art UK yes indeed! Sometimes we are so caught up with chasing the latest and greatest tech that we don’t sit down and concentrate on what we can do with what we have 👌 we definitely need to collaborate again soon 👏🙏🙏
Me too, i guess 5D mark IV can use at least 3-4 years ahead. 30MP are more than enough for almost every needs. (For some reason i shoot for billboard too) I shoot for commercial production, it feels like tank, the battery, body, autofocus very quick and reliable. All around camera, i take a second hand for only 2000 bucks, shutter count only 1800. Very big deal, feels new and fresh!
I still have it, i use it more for photos as its imagery is really beautiful. For videography, it was a let down esp for a $3300 camera (bought 2016). 1080hd/60fps is fine. Slowmo and 4k are useleas. But hey, canon colors are always on point.
I’m finding the 4K only really useable in controlled conditions - like sitting down and vlogging - I attempted to film a short film in 4K and went back to 1080p because of focus issues ...
Now 2024. Still i use 5D mark iv. Because its awesome camera. I have Canon mark ii, mark iii, mark iv. My lens collections - 16-35 (2.8), 24-70 (2.8) , 50mm (1.2), 70-200 (2.8) , 85mm (1.2).
I'm new to photography and videography. I had hired a camera person to shoot my projects (shorts and feature film) in the past. However, I am in the market now and deciding between a Panasonic GH5s, Sony A7 III and this camera. I was leaning towards the GH5s but now after seeing this video, I am rethinking my options. That you, Kai. Kai is my son's middle name. Maybe that's a sign to go with the Mark IV.
Hey JJ 😊 the GH5s is a great camera 👌 the thing I like about the 5Dmark IV more than anything is it’s robustness - how it just keeps on going even in tough shooting conditions - which makes it great as a workhorse camera - and the Clog is not too bad - I know some people love the Sony colours over canon though - they are amazing 😉 especially for short films - not that the Canon colour is bad at all 👌
I love the 5dmk4. I could never understand why everyone was getting hysterical about its crap 4K. I mainly do corporate films and I think it gives a great 1080 image. Customers are happy. The af tracking is great. Not that mad about clog on 8 bit but I guess it’s nice to have the option.
Same here - used it for corporate and wedding videos all at 1080p - been using the 4K more for RU-vid videos and actually can work around it just fine (: and actually it’s not that bad either 😊
@@KaiCreative yep the 4k looks decent enough but honestly that format motion jpeg was a bit of a silly choice. A clear attempt to avoid messing with their cinema range.
5dm4 is also my first choice for corporate videos or interview style whose clients are specific with great skin tones. That is the money look! More creative or cinematic style i tend to use my a73. Different jobs, different tools
Awesome vid Kai! We love the 5d Mark IV! Never actually owned one but regularly use one at the photo school and studio we use. It's still such a work horse of a camera. What are your thoughts on the upcoming r5 btw??
Rudy! What’s up man? Hope You’re keeping well! Yep love my Mark 4! Definitely interested in the R5 - literally bought the R last week as I heard there is a delay to the R5 - but hoping to get my hands on one as soon as possible! What you thinking 🤔
i just inherited this camera from my brother who is moving on to the R5 and this is my first full frame camera and i just started photography and videography
I still have my Canon 5D Mk IV with the dual battery grip and use it a lot in sports events. Too many people switching to Sony's for that feminine build quality over the more masculine build quality of a Canon. Never did like mirrorless cameras.
Thank you for this video! I’m a very novice photographer. My experience thus far lies with drone photography, however, I would love to get into the hand-held photography game. This camera has been mentioned to me and I came here to find out why. Thank you for showing me.
Outstanding 🤩 so a few years ago I saw some travel drone footage from a guy on Facebook - it was incredible and I commented on it - he asked me the same question about getting a camera - I suggested he get the 5D Mark IV with clog and a 24-70mm 2.8. Which he got and started filming bits and pieces. A few years later he has his own production company called ‘Blake Ridder’ and millions of views on RU-vid from his short-films. I can’t take any credit for the work he has done and success he has had, but glad that I mentioned it to him and connected with him back then ☝️☝️👌👌
@@KaiCreative It is always great to get reinforcing pieces of information about a product. I really appreciate you taking the time to reply. I will certainly look into the 5DIV. Thanks again.
Just bought one. The R with the grip didn’t feel right after shooting Canon’s DSLR’s for years. Tiny camera, huge grip. The 5D4 is perfect and has more capabilities than I’ll ever need. It’s a tool. Give the latest and greatest to a hack and you’ll get crap. Give a budget camera to someone with knowledge and you’ll get great shots.
Really like the detail in this one, I knew most of the points already. Still weighing up whether the C-LOG is worth it or just using the neutral picture setting?
I just bought two Mark4's to replace my wonderful and still kicking strong Mark2's. I'm mainly a portrait photographer. I am used to DSLR's. I like to SEE through the lens what I shoot. I don't shoot video much and I suppose other platforms and systems shine at shooting video, but for photography, the Mark4 is a beast of wonderful opportunities! There is just NO way I can shoot and compose a frame looking at a damn back screen! We can sit here and dissect every pro and against reason why one system is better than the other but in the end, after you skim over the commerciality of most of these opinions, it all boils down to preference but most importantly, the features of one system that make possible producing what you have in mind in terms of creativity. These are simply tools and nothing else! Stop worrying about what one system does over the other and just follow your dream, your inner creative instincts, shoot great video and photography and make sure you're happy in the process! I wish I can buy the entire stock of Mark4's so that I have them here for the next 50 years. I doubt that there will be a situation where I'd need a better camera. I shoot entire wedding events with this camera, in every possible light conditions and it has never failed me.
5d miv is a true photographers camera. Designed for stills this beast utilizes the digic6 + sensor the same as the canon 1dx mii so low light capability is good. As a matter of fact DXO Mark gave it a score of 91 that's the best rating given to canon sensor at that time. All auto ffocus points work at f8. So many telephoto and even pro grade supertelephoto lens work with the 1.4x miii and 2x miii tele extenders at all a.f. points and at 7 f.p.s. shooting speeds it handles moving subjects quite well. Ergonomics are great as with most Canon cameras. If your looking for pro grade high quality video capability I think this camera is not the camera for you. Canon makes cinematic cameras which are more capable than this body. But if you're like me a photographer who doesn't shoot or need a video camera except rare occasions but needs a fantastic camera body camera for stills than this is a great choice.
Hey Kai, I’ve actually been a little interested in getting into videography. I was wondering what setting you use for your 5D mk4 (I also have this camera) because it seems like whenever I take a video and import it onto my laptop, the quality goes all the way down to a 480p.
Hello Kai, that's a very informative video right there. Thank you!!! I just got my Mark IV today, so there's no better time your video could have come in handy. I'll like to ask though, what camera you shot this video with????
As a photographer this is a pretty silly title for a video. The Mark IV is still a camera that a lot of people DREAM of being able to afford. It's a legendary camera, also.
No it's not at all, it's all about context. As a professional videographer and filmmaker (which Kai is also) I personally wouldn't think of using 5DMarkIV in 2020 with so many different, better, options around for my projects.
Can you do a video tutorial about how to set the Canon 5D MK IV? (Aviation photography). I have her for almost 4 years and I don't like her. Noisy pictures, always bright and vignetting. There's a huge gap between what you photograph to what you getting when you starting to edit the RAW files. I'm using lens form Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary.
What's a good gimbal up buy for the 5d Mark iv? I own a old school 7d but I'm about to buy the mark 4 for music videos. My work is mainly on music videos. I just purchased the 24-70mm 2.8 ii lens and manfrotto 502 fluid head flat base tripod. So I'm preparing to make the change for the 5d Mark 4 and looking into gimbals. I see you are using them in your video here. Please I will appreciate your feedback? Great video by the way. I respect your input.. Great work too
Thanks Cali 🙏 so I’m using the RoninS gimbal with the 5DmarkIV and 24-105mm set up. I think that is the max weight that the RoninS can handle before it starts beeping. I’ve used that set up for corporate and weddings and it’s been fantastic - the Ronin battery lasts all day long but my arms and back start to burn by the end of the day 😮😂😅
@@KaiCreative thank you for the reply. I came across your channel while looking up research and reviews on which way to go next with a camera and gimbal. Even though the infamous mirror less Canon R6 and R5 just came out I'm still considering going with the 5d Mark iv.
Great question - I think that you can't go wrong with the kit lens - the 24-105mm f/4 especially for shooting outside, if you are inside consider the 24-70mm f/2.8 - hope it helps (:
Great review and really appreciate your providing your 10 reasons for using the 5D M IV. I am planning on upgrading my Cannon 40D (yes very old camera :) ) to Mark 5D IV. Since it's been 4 years since Cannon released this camera, do you think I should wait a bit longer to upgrade as I am in no rush to upgrade. Thanks!
Really helpful video thank you. I’ve been using my 60D for many years, and have recently rented the mk4. So much more to learn, going from a crop to FF, but I’m up for the challenge. Cheers
Still using my 5D4 for video works. I purchased all the things that needed to fill the gap in the video department. Atomos Ninja V for external recording and monitoring, shotgun mic and zoom H6 to address the audio. Overall I think it can still serve a couple of year in the video but tone more years in the stills side. I have to put on hold my pre-order of the Canon EoS R5 until such time they have fix for the overheating issue. Awesome vide By the way, thanks for sharing.
for me, the best one in the market.... stabil.... no problem tool..... a perfect combination for foto and video... with good lenses a perfect tool......
Great question - I think that you can't go wrong with the kit lens - the 24-105mm f/4 especially for shooting outside, if you are inside consider the 24-70mm f/2.8 - hope it helps (:
Great video Kai with some fantastic reasons. Ive been thinking for a while about upgrading my camera and have been looking at the 5D mark 4 and the EOS R. I think what swings it for me is the ability to use the lenses for both cameras on the EOS R, and probably more importantly the weight reduction with the EOS R. With the release EOS R5 the price of the R hopefully drop. Whit all that said that 5D iv is a fantastic camera🤔
Nice one Dave 👌 the EOS-R was gonna be the next camera I purchased but I’m holding out for the EOS-R5 especially if it’s gonna be coming out at around $3.5K :-/ will have to wait and see (:
Kai, well don't, I have been using the Canon Mark 5 IV for over 3 years and is a workhorse. Like you I waiting for the R-5. With the current price of around $2000 for the Canon Mark, 5 IV I may just pick one up for a backup.
You mentioned you use a lapel mic on the 5D Mark IV. Could you please tell me what kind? The sound on your videos is fantastic and sound makes or breaks a video for me. Ty
One pixel goes out and there goes your video. Lucky to be able to sell my Mark II Buying used, by the, one can never tell how much video was shot on a Canon. Only stills.
I currently have Canon 60d + Sigma 35mm 1.4 + Canon 50mm 1.8 and do a lot of car photography. To me, it feels a little bit outdated, so I'm looking to upgrade, plus I don't like that it's APSC. Been looking at mirrorless options like Canon RP or R, but I'm not sure, because they're quite expensive and have plenty of cons. Anyone can recommend a decent Canon camera? 90d? Like the one in the video? There's too much choice.
Hi friend, your comment got me thinking long and winded. I have 70d and just recently moved to R6 (discounted after R6m2 announcement). I am happier and having more fun with mirrorless. The reasons to go mirrorless are: EVF (You get what so see), High FPS, Object 3D tracking, silent shutter sound (no mirror flipping clacks), fully customized buttons, eye tracking. I can take more better composed shots with mirrorless, but doesn't mean I'm a better photographer, it just help me learn faster. So, depend on your budget and priority, check out R8, R7, R6 + basic lens adapter. The only reason I can think of to keeping my 70D DSLR is better battery life.
Thanks Teddy Tedd - the EOS-R was next on my purchase list - but with the announcement of the R5 I’m saving all my pennies to hopefully afford to buy it 😊
I remember really wanting a 7D when it came out :-D and it is still a beast! The 5DMarkiv is coming down in price - so you might have one sooner than you think.. but then you will want the R5 ;-) The best camera is the one you got (; keep up the good work (:
I *love* my 7d mkII ! ...But I have been considering picking up a 5D mkII as a second camera since they have dropped so much on eBay. Right now my 2nd is the M50 and the lag between shots sometimes kills me. I've missed so many shots that I would have caught with the 7d. Maybe 7d for wildlife & macro & 5d for landscape & portrait... Thanks for the great review, Kai!
Kai Creative I got my 7d when it first came out, and it hasn’t failed me since then. I still love it, and will keep it forever, even after it crumbles away :p I’ve just been wanting to go full frame as another option and something that will last me a long time. Idk how I feel about the R5, I just love the feeling of a bulky DSLR in my hands. And I do have a mirrorless x100v I use, even though it doesn’t compare to the r5.
@@medusasaurus1447 FYI, a good lens for the 7D is that popular 18-35mm sigma. I would think about 5D Mark III even. I had a couple of those and loved them.
Canon 5dmkiv is a great camera. At the moment it's expensive. It's a great value camera for the buck. Hoping to be able to upgrade soon to the 5Dmkiv. Until then I'll be using my 6D.
5DIV is a phenomenal camera. It's just a 4 year old flagship used by a professionals all over the world. And if someone can't do good job with it, no other camera will fix that.
