Nîmes, a city in the Occitanie region of southern France, was an important outpost of the Roman Empire. It’s known for well-preserved Roman monuments such as the Arena of Nîmes, a double-tiered circa-70 A.D. amphitheater still in use for concerts and bullfights. Both the Pont du Gard tri-level aqueduct and the Maison Carrée white limestone Roman temple are around 2,000 years old.

But while Nîmes is known for its Roman monuments, most of which are in perfect condition of conservation, its history after antiquity is very rich and eventful. Many famous monumental monuments bear witness to this long and rich history; -Thus the Romanesque cathedral of Notre Dame de Saint Castor consecrated on July 6, 1096 by Pope Urban II who came to preach the 1st Crusade and the army of the Crusaders departing for the Holy Land, because little known fact it is in front of the Cathedral of Nîmes that gathered"Army of the Crusaders commanded by the Count of Toulouse Raymond IV of Saint Gilles who was going to seize the citadel of Jerusalem on 15 July 1099, the most powerful lord of the crusade, who will be ousted from the throne of the new royal kingdom of Jerusalem in favour of Godefroi de Bouillon, and will then go on to conquer the county of Tripoli (now Lebanon) marking the departure of the French presence in this region. One of the stained-glass windows of the cathedral is the only existing representation of this now forgotten but important historical figure. The cathedral has a remarkable Romanesque frieze miraculously preserved despite the degradation committed by Protestants during the wars of religion with the Catholics who bloodied France and the city in the 16th century and has been home to since 1805, the tomb of the cardinal of Bernis, minister of foreign affairs of the king of France Louis XV and friend of Casanova whose religious mistresses he shared when he was ambassador of France to Venice and who employed Casanova as a spy when he took refuge in France after his escape from the Plombs prison in Venice - The Vauban citadel and the Montcalm barracks, built in 1687 and 1700 respectively by order of the King of France Louis XIV, to guard the Protestant city of Nîmes after the suppression of Protestant worship by the King in 1685, which imposes the Catholic religion as a religion in France. The Vauban citadel was transformed into a prison under the Revolutionary Terror in 1793 until 1991 when it became a university abd was the place of the last execution in Nîmes of a condemned to death guillotined in 1948 while the walls of the ditches still contain the bullet impacts of the German firing squads who executed the French resistance fighters and those of the firing squads that in 1944-45 executed the French collaborators with the German occupier. -The Montcalm barracks were in July 1815 the place of a confrontation between the garrison favorable to Napoleon who had just abdicated after the Battle of Waterloo and the Roman Catholic population partisan of the king of France Louis XVIII who wanted to avenge the supporters of Napoleon who were revolutionary Protestants and Republicans, slaughtered the soldiers. One of the soldiers of the garrison managed to escape and took the boat for the USA, his name was Bouvier and he was the ancestor of Jacqueline Bouvier, wife of the USA president John F.Kennedy, came to Nimes several times on ancestral lands, the first time in 1958 accompanied by her husband still senator .They visited the house of Pastor Rabaut St Etienne, one of the drafters of the 1789 Declaration of Human Rights and of the citizen, who was then guillotined, a house that housed the Marquis de La Fayette in 1785 (whose ancestor in the Middle Ages had been Seneschal of Nîmes) the secret dealings between the minister of King Louis XVI, Malesherbes and the American ambassadors in France, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson future president of the USA trying to improve the lot of Protestants in France . Jefferson was inspired by the Maison Carrée to build the Richmond Capitol. -The castellum divisorum water castle which received the waters of the monumental aqueduct of the Pont du Gard and distributed them in the city (it is only the 2nd Roman monument of this style with that of Pompei) -The gardens of the Fountain created in 1745 on the remains of the ancient Roman sanctuary of the source of the God Nemausus venerated by the"Roman emperor Augustus who came here three times and who gave his name to the city have the particularity of having been the first gardens open to the public in France, because previously the gardens were reserved for the only aristocrats who entombed private gardens their castles. The gardens include the temple of Diana indeterminate monument then transformed into a convent that the Protestants destroyed in 1577 so that"All that remains is the ruins of this monument which gives it a romantic aspect that has moved many visitors of history like Rousseau, Casanova, George Sand, Alexandre Dumas, Prosper Mérimée while the young Alphonse Daudet born in Nîmes in 1840 in a house still visible near the garden was playing as a child with bones. Alphonse Daudet writer and author of famous novels like the Letters of My Mill or Tartarin of Tarascon character for which he was inspired by his maternal uncle Emile Reinaud, great hunter and whose rifle is visible in the Old Nimes Museum next to the cathedral as well as the house surmounted by a jacquemart in front of the City Hall -Other Roman monument the Gate, Porte de France; 2nd gate of the Roman enclosure still existing with the Augustus Gate which was the object of a whim of King Louis XIV visiting Nîmes in 1660 who refused to return by the gate of the medieval enclosure by which returned to the city usually the kings of France visiting but demanded to enter through the Gate of the Roman enclosure, the door of France which keeps the traces of the harrows . Thus, the visitor who passes under the door of France follows the steps of King Louis XIV.King Louis XIV made another caprice, impressed by the Maison Carrée, he proposed to dismantle it in order to relocate it to Versailles, but fortunately for them the royal pleasure was not followed up. It should be noted that Louis XIV was accompanied to Nîmes by his musketeers, among whom was D'Artagnan, who really existed and became famous thanks to the novels of Alexandre Dumas, who was inspired by the adventures of authentic nimois François Picaud to write his novel Le count of Monte Cristo. The city also has many mansions built between the 16th and 19th centuries that hide under austere facades real architectural jewels like courtyards, stairs, balconies, but belonging to private persons, these private hotels are only visible free of charge once a year on the 3rd week-in of September during the heritage days that coincide with the Harvest Fair , 2nd cycle of the bullfighting season nîmoise after that of the Pentecost feria . The weekend of the harvest fair in September is the best time to visit Nîmes in order to make the most of its monuments free of charge and the entertainment in town during the fair.
