It’s expensive because everything has to be either flown in, which is not cheap; or barged in, which is cheaper but you have just one or two delivery dates a year. The small passenger planes aren’t cheap per flight hour either. Everything is more expensive because everything has to brought in expensively in small quantities.

I lived and went to high school in Iqaluit '83='86. To describe it would be... culture shock, but I loved it! My suggestion is to make friends with the locals, attempt to learn bits and pieces of Inuktitut, use it as much as possible, and you might learn to appreciate a culture that has survived the test of time. As a teenager, I purchased a used skidoo and explored the area thoroughly. It's certainly beautiful in its own way. I'd like to thank you for mentioning the limited daylight. Myself, I still suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder which I believe comes from my Frobisher history. Enjoy the northern lights! They're incredible up there! Keep pushing for better internet services and get involved in making Iqaluit a better place to raise your kids. I look forward to seeing more of your videos, which remind me of a part of my life I'll never forget! Beware, there's two weeks a year that the mosquitos will literally eat you alive! Enjoy...💛

2 cons (I live in whitehorse) #1. It gets extremely cold there, and it snows so much sometimes that it's almost as tall as your car #2. In the territories, especially Nunavut. The sun sets sometimes at 3 am, and rises at 5 am.

Hi, I am probably soon going to move to Maniitsoq in Greenland to work as an English and Danish teacher. Now, some of the cons (and pros) of moving to Iqaluit og Maniitsoq seem to be very alike. One thing, I think I would miss in Maniitsoq, is getting daily news in a regular basis, as Danish news are only broadcast some 4 to 5 times in Greenlandic radio. And radio via the internet is expensive. Therefore, this question for you : I have found out, that CBC has a mediumwave transmitter on 1230 kHz in Iqaluit. Getting news in English (or French) would be good, but does it have the power to reach the shores of Greenland/Maniitsoq ? Do you know anything about that ? Or do you even know about shortwave transmitters in Nunavut, which might cover Western Greenland ? Thanks and best greetings from Denmark - Henrik.

Very insightful for those whom are not born in the passed the north of 60. As an Inuvialuit born in Inuvik, for the southerners? Not to concern too much about technology is one great reason to move to Iqaluit. To move out of your comfort zone in order to see how the Inuit struggle in the Iqaluit region, to help make changes in order to bring the true nature back to the Inuit culture.

Very interesting. As for the fur, fur is a big part of the the Inuit community so anti-fur people can stay quiet. I am curious about languages, restaurants and safety. 1. Are you learning Inuktitut? 2. What kind of foods are normally at the local restaurants? do people sell local dishes (I guess fresh fish)? 3. Is it safe there? What to do and what not to do to avoid trouble? Also.. what kind of job opportunities are there for new residents? Also I get that you miss McD and I also love their fries but I personally don't think that would be a good addition for the community considering that it'd be like bringing more unhealthy food there! :) PS one more question!! what do the locals normally like to do for fun there when the sun sets early? do they still go out or do they mostly stay in?

Will you be doing like a video tour of Iqaluit for those of us who don't live there, and will probably never be visiting there? That would be interesting. I wish I could open some businesses there for you all, cause people need physical places to shop, no matter where they live, and no matter how popular online shopping is. Plus, that would provide more jobs for people. I especially hope that nothing happens to anyone up there, cause of the lack of hospital locations. The no sidewalks part would bother me, and I'm not even in a wheel chair. Also, the lack of sunlight for so long, and the temps being so cold, and being so for so long would bother me.
@OliviaIrwin4
@OliviaIrwin4 5 лет назад
Jason Gates what would you like to see? :) The hospital here is actually really great! People do have to get transported to Ottawa sometimes but luckily it’s a short flight! The problem is buying physical things here rather than online shopping (clothes, food, stuff) is much more expensive because they have to factor in the cost of getting it here! Luckily for me I like online shopping 😛 The no sidewalks thing does suck sometimes, but it would make plowing the streets harder, and someone would have to plow the sidewalks too. I can’t wait until it warms up and we can get out for hikes again though! Thank you for your comment :)

You could make a video about the culture of the community. The history and how much of a change that is. One point you could also share is someone who doesnt know the history of indigenous people in general, or those that do not believe in reconciliation, should not move to the north. Also going into better depth about why things are more difficult like food and flights and doctors, but explain that is the reality for inuit etc. You could also explain nursing housing and teacher housing is usually a lot nicer than the locals. That there are families with nice homes and nice things, but again the reality of it, is that isnt the case for most inuit.

Bugs aren't that bad. All the communities are on the coast. More salty are means less bugs. If you want the Bug experience! I suggest Baker Lake, Nu. The only inland community with Rivers and a freshwater lake.

They basically freeze during winter and thaw out as warmer weather comes. Bugs aren’t out until June and die out by late August. However they are slower than the bugs from down south, kinda the reason why we don’t like to see bug bugs when we go on a trip down south 😂. We hardly have anything bigger than a bumble bee

I grew up on the northern tip of Van Isle-very remote, the village of Port Alice has less than a thrid of when I grew up. Everyone knows your business. I do miss the caving, fishing, lack of light pollution and clear night skies, I could live there rent free but I would have to be on welfare as there are no jobs, so I don't.

I havent searched for the other half of this video. But how about the reasons NOT to move to the South? Crazed White gunmen shooting up innocent people, Racial profiling, White crazed police officers, every diseases known to Man, children stealing Catholics, WhiteMan papery dominating every little thing needed to live needing paper work, after paper work, after paper work, etc. I Hope my fellow Inuks arent as ignorant when we go South for the first time. Southerners treat Canadian Native land like its a different universe. We are Human as well. We live in communities like every other place on Earth does. Houses, work buildings, stores, limited as they are, also places to go. Just in a way smaller scale than the South. Im a lot late to this video, but my words are true.
@OliviaIrwin4
@OliviaIrwin4 2 года назад
I hope you do watch the other half! When we were deciding to move to Iqaluit I didn’t find much information online. I think it would be great to have more people moving north that stay there for longer than a year or two. It would take years of my life to do a video on all of the reasons not to move south lol. I’m sorry that this came across as ignorant, I tried really hard to keep the reasons more fun and light hearted, rather than dig into anything deeper.
