We visited Germany 2 weeks ago and was so fascinated with the country. Loved everything we visited! Loved the food, beer and the culture. Thank you so much for this video!
To become a skilled metalworker in Germany it takes 3.5 years of education!!! You are 4 days in the company and 1 day in school. In school you learn all the theoretical stuff like technical drawing, mathematics, metal behaviour, writing CNC programs +++. You don't only learn what to do but also why (or why not). It's not only learning by doing.
Thanks for the nice video. I am German myself, but have been living abroad for 13 years and yes, it's true, Germany is great and has many advantages. Unfortunately, many Germans do not appreciate this because they have never lived abroad and have had no other experience
@@mautoban66 see there is a concern right there. Go abroad, check stuff out, then come back and decide. Many americans "KNOW" that they live in the greatest country on earth, which is why they never go anywhere else. If they did, their "opinion" would be rooted in information....
@@dirkmasters7453 not sure if that is a thing. I am german living in the us. More a thing that some of us have the skills and opportunities to live in other countries.... we get to choose.
Thanks for pointing out all the advantages we have here. I wish some Germans would appreciate it more instead of wining all the time. You are right, a lot of us just take it for granted. They should live in other countries for a while like I did to really know what they are missing there.
Well, I live in Spain now for more than 3 years, it doesn't feel so different to me. Maybe the differences in Europe are not so big at all. Except for the languages it was no problem to work and live in the Netherlands, France or Spain for me as a German, a benefit of the EU. Each country still has its own culture and special characteristics, especially regarding the food, but nowadays I still can buy German product here in Spain and vice versa. And at the end, Germany is just a few hours away by plane.

I always think that one of the biggest strength here in germany is that university is free. I have several friends which come from the US and have dept until they are 40-50...
I love this video. It makes me even more excited to get to Germany. Been learning my German for 605days now. Even my friends can't wait for me to get there so that they can come visit. Love your video. Very informative and very fun to watch
LG
As a German, I am always fascinated by the language. The words put together are very logical. It is even more fun to compare word stems in similar languages. Sometimes I have to pay attention to how the meaning of the word has changed. Now I heard "maiden name" translated into German: "Mädchen Name" "Mädchen" is is a modification of the German "Maid" = "maiden"
There is one major exception to the logic embedded in the German language though: definite articels! There just is mo universal guideline when to use what article. We grow up using them and don't spend a thought about them but try to explain them to a non native speaker. To them "der, die und das" are simply nightmares. Why is it "der Baum" but "die Blume"? Both are plants, both are (more or less) objects so why not even "das" for both of them?
When you say „Mürbchen“, it sounds very cute! Nice that you like so many things here! Will check out some of your videos, I didn’t know your channel before! 👍👋
@@Andrew_-nr7zt Don't listen to nutjobs, Germany will be fine. The first two semesters are the hardest. Will it be an international study (English) or a regular study in German?
@@lovelyisabelle2028 Is that so? I dont know the word Mötchen, but I think it could be a short version of "Milchbrötchen", which describes a variety of fluffy small breads usually sweet.
@@JohnSmith-bq2ut That could be caused by the fact that the word doesn't exist :D ...that's why I wrote my comment. And about the milk rolls ...thanks but I'm German, so....
@@JohnSmith-bq2ut I understood " Mürbchen", which make sense, these are the fluffy sweet rolls I know them as "Mürbestückchen" or just "Mürbes". "E Määrbs" where my parents come from (guess;-))
5:38 never seen ur channel before, but juding based on the few utterances in this video, YOUR german _is_ really amazing, no accent, even some laid back attitude, flows naturelly. like it! (said from the POV of a linguist)
Hi "Mom", I'm happy for you that you like it here so much. Thank you for your nice compliment on German beer. I would not have thought that there would be a very big difference, because many of the great American brewers were actually of German descent. All I have heard is that beer in the US is abnormally cold.
The prohibition all but destroyed the beer culture in america. Even the companies that did survive see the fallout of that period in their low alcohol content to this day.
Hi Saul, very nice German writing skills for a non native - how come? 👍 Before you make a final decision on moving why don't you test us first and come for visit? That way you can be sure to make the right choice. 😉
So, Jenna, you did it! You made me incredible HOMESICK! But, also proud of my country from afar! Now, you need to make a video about the German election;)
Yes, they take it for granted. I remember some time ago, when there were considerations, to install a Semester fee of about 500€. Whoa, uproar, demonstrations, they had to take it back. Though the 500€ would not even cover the cost of the semesterticket. Wee germans are great in protecting our vested rights.

And of course Oktoberfest! Since I’m retired from the Air Force, I’m definitely going back to visit! Cologne is our favorite city there! Miss the Brats, Doners, Schnitzel, etc… taste so good!!!

What differentiates you from maaany other people from North America is your nearly perfect pronunciation. This is very rare. I often do not understand why many Americans in the first place have so many difficulties in pronouncing the "r" or the "z" the German way. I mean I wouldn't do it wrong the other way round. For sure I make mistakes for grammatical reasons probably all the time and I surely have an accent, but I knew from the first lesson on how to pronounce the English "r" or the "th". Why are there so many Americans fe that still do not comprehend? You do and that is why we are ao impressed! Thanks for your content: I recently found you and now I am binging all of it.😂

hold on hold on… cake is not a dessert for after dinner. Like dinner is maybe at 7pm… who would eat cake after that? Cake is not even associated with dinner here. It is for the afternoon as its own entity.
Happy belated birthday wishes, dear Jenna. Mine was one before yours, apparently. And you probably saw me running through the Brandenburg Gate. I was the one dressed in a Flash costume. Keep on with your great spirit.
Hi Jenna - be sure you look great even with you're hair much shorter. Don't worry about the result, short haired ladies look way more self confident and interresting. Best famous example may be Roxette.
A comment though your hair obviously has grown back since: to keep it in the world of the living (Marie Frederiksson unfortunately died a couple of years ago) think of Pink! or Halle Berry. I could'nt donate any hair - my hair took a look at the world, got presumably disappointed and decided to grow inwards instead 😂. So Kudos to your decision, Jenna!
Kaffee u Kuchen reminds me of my childhood my Great Grandma always gave me a hlf small cup of Coffee with lots of sugar and condensed sweet milk and because she made it for me it tasted extra special .... ahhh the memories ...
Been here for 17 years and I just am love with everything. Oh maybe the gov't paperwork isn't high on my list but I love the low cost of living and we always eat great and healthy. Every once in a while I will slurge and buy a filet which I pay 8 euro and is always delicious. High quality goods for a decent low price.
Thank you for all these nice compliments about Germany. :-) While talking about traveling and climbing mountains - have you already been to Saxony visiting the National Park of the Saxon Sandstone Mountains? It is an amazing landscape and totally different from the Alps. Did you know that a lot of Hollywood movies have been filmed there, like "Inglorious Basterds", "The Reader", "Cloud Atlas", "Grand Budapest Hotel" and many more? Other parts of these movies were recorded in the City of Goerlitz. The architecture of Dresden (my hometown) and Leipzig can often be seen in international film productions, too. I would love to see you making a video about that, too. Let me know when you come here. :-) PS: Since you like cake so much, you probably will love the "Dresdner Eierschecke". In the old days Dresden was famous for not only hosting the first, but also even more coffee houses and hot chocolate cafes than Vienna. From here the coffee culture spread all over Germany. And for sure - we have some memorable breweries, too. You just want to take a seat in their affiliated restaurants and have a solid tradional meal with a good glass of beer. ;-)

Love to watch your videos and everytime you are ending with the click of your tongue and saying "...bis später", it forces me to smile. Out of curiosity I do have two questions for you after living a fair amount of years here and as far as I could observe being perfect in German language. Q1: While being amongst Germans on the street, for shopping etc. when having a conversation in German language: Do you still need to somehow mentally translate it to English, think about and translate your answer back to German or does it just usually work / happen without actively thinking about translating back and forth? Q2: While sleeping / dreaming - did you encounter having a vivid dream "in German"? Hopefully not a nightmare of course. 😉 I, for myself as a German found it sometimes strange but funny during longer trips to the US that I started dreaming "in English". Also, when having some English conversations or watching videos in English I'm able to understand what it is about and have a feeling about the conversation. But when I sometimes watch videos with other Germans, for example my father and want to translate the content to him, I have a difficult time to find the fitting, right words in German what means I didn't need to translate it for myself if you know what I mean.
I'm going to answer since I speak 2 languages and now I’m A2 at German, currently living in Germany. 1- I don't translate in my head 2- yes almost all of my dreams now are in the second language since I use it all the time and barely speak in my mother language. Arabic is my mother language, English is the second acquired one, and German going to be the third 😁. I Hope Spanish would come next.
I plan on moving to Europe in the next 5 years. I'd love to live in Germany and I'm trying to learn the language. My biggest obstacle is the weather. I'm from the states .. Pittsburgh, PA and couldn't stay there due to the cold and snow. I get super depressed.. So I moved to Florida.....I keep looking for places in Germany that have good weather but haven't found anything. Looks as though Pittsburgh has more sunny days a year than almost every city in Germany. 😞 I might have to live on the coast of France or Malta and travel to Germany multiple times a year... Not sure how I would hold up living there with ugly weather. I love the people and my ancestors are from Germany... Wish the weather agreed with me.
You might want to check out Freiburg im Breisgau in the southwest of Germany. And talking about winters: You'll probably find them less depressing than in Pittsburgh, because German houses are warm and cosy and usually very well insulated. And then of course you get the Christmas markets, with Glühwein and lots of other warm and spiced drinks.
Regardless of weather Germany is also farther north that Pittsburgh. That means longer days in the Summer (sun comes up at 4 am and set at 10 pm) but shorter days in the winter (its dark by 4 pm). I always liked that. Somehow Christmas isn't really the same without. But I can see how it can get really depressing.
Try living in Soutwest of Germany, Southern Palatinate or Fribourg/Freibourg, Ortenau etc. it is very warm there and compared to the north, spring comes about 4 weeks earlier. It is warm and sunny in spring, quite often hot in summer and mild winters.
Love to hear that you love it here. I used to live in Canada NB for almost 4 years with my dad. I loved it there. There is just something about the nature there and a diffrent kind of freedom. Bit since living back in germany and my canadian friends asking me if ill ever come back i have to say maybe if i retire or like just to Visit because as a young adult you got a lot more opportunities here. But then i have to say its easier to buy yourself property over in America. Nearly impossible nowadays. I work as a caregiver so i dont make huge amounts of money but thats just what comes along in that field. And then 1 to 2 bedroom Apartments are like 250 k and more to buy... ebery country has pros and cons 🥳🥰🍁

The first time I realized how good our healthcare system is was in new zealand - a friend of mine had any ear infection that pretty much any doctor here could have taken care of, but there he actually had to switch islands! And all that despite their healthcare being relatively good still...
That's a wonderful place that you, the room looked so nice. Where have you been? Your sweater is so beautiful. Coffee/tea/hot chocolate and piece of cake are part of the whole Sunday experience in Germany. Sleeping longer, having a breakfast together, spending time with the family or friends, making phone calls to other family members, having a nice lunch at home or the favourite restaurant, having a walk to a nice park, garden or just window shopping through the streets and then coffee and cake and so on, that's part of traditional German lifestyle. Beer is a kind of liquid food and like baking bread, there is a lot of love and passion in brewing beer. Learn a real craft, craft guilds and the festival's are other parts of German traditions. Do it right or don't! Nice to see you visiting my hometown, i hope you had a wonderful time and enjoyed your stay. What were your favourite places?
Thanks so much! 🥰 I stayed at my mother-in-laws place in Wedding - she’s got amazing taste in flea market items! I love Berlin! It think it’s about my 20th time there… I always love being by the Spree in general! But it was fun to watch the Marathon last weekend too! 🤩

Wow Jenna, you challanged my english language because of the speed you're talking. 😂 BUT !!! I can't remember to had some much fun as a native german (bavarian) speaker with my bounded capabilities in english language, to listen to someone who is so excited about something (Germany, Germans, Bread aso...) like you. 👏 You leave such a likeable impression to me, that I hereby and absolutely seriously invite you and your family, if you're ever went to Bavaria - Alps (Wendelstein / Spitzingsee / Schliersee / Fischbachau-Winkelstüberl), come over and visit us at home. I can agree with you regarding beer, but also having lived in Calgary, then attending Uni in Montana, Canadian beer was certainly better than the US. I've been living in Austria for over 30 years, have no Intention of ever moving back to the US, but would consider Calgary. Coffee culture in Wien for 27 years, now 5 years in southern Austria near Italy and Slovenia in the Alps, can't beat it. Travel throughout Europe is great. I've lived on 4 continents in 7 countries and an island. LG aus Villach-Warmbad.
You know, It's so funny hearing a thirty year old complaining about her age and remembering her twenties in such a fond, longing way. I am almost twice your age and I have a similar feeling about my forties 😂😂. Beer is a touchy subject in Germany as you know (Düsseldorfer und Kölner bezeichnen Alt und Kölsch jeweils ja nicht als Bier 😂). So it's quite hilarious to see you holding up a cup of Bavarian beer while sitting outside in Berlin!
@@lifeingermany_ Canada and the US have many great things to offer, when you travel there- but you are right, usually it is not the beer (nevertheless sometimes you can have luck and find a good local beer like "Samuel Adams" in Boston)... "Beers" like US Budweiser or Heineken taste like lemonade for kids, mostly the rescue in a US bar is to order a Mexican beer (like "Corona Extra"), which is a bit more drinkable.
There was a bread at kamps that I used to love. Had all different kind of seeds and shredded carrots in it. Last time I had it was good 22 years ago. Do they still sell it ?
I agree. I don't know why some people here complain about the bread when it is absolutely amazing. The transportation system too. I love it. One thing though, regarding the language, I do learned it too, but of course sometimes it gets difficult, because it is not an easy language. In some cities that is ok because you can just talk to people with the words you have, but in big cities, or in Berlin mostly (where I live), it gets frustrating to speak German (German paradise for the ones who refuse to learn the language or don't like it). Many times when I am trying to speak, people just look at you and say "Ok, English" or just speak plain English when they immediately see you. I know I look like a non-German, but it is kind of frustrating, so something that has worked for me, is that I just say Me no speak English, and I could continue speaking German lol. I know they do that in order to make things simpler and easier, but most of the times it feels like "Don't bother, you will never make it, so English is ok". As I said before, that is in Berlin, in all the rest it is pretty ok. Probably it is due to this Berliner rudeness, which is high, when you experience it on an everyday basis.
You’re so right! In Düsseldorf, you never have this issue! But in Berlin, I get that a lot too!! I always thought it’s because my German was bad, but I think it’s also because a lot of germans there speak English in their day to day life and prefer switching to English! 🤣 but some also ask to switch to English because they have no patience 😔

@@lifeingermany_ it is definitely the second one, hahaha. A couple of weeks ago I was in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, and before going there some people told me “be careful, over there is a bit different” I imagine because of… well, history, but I am not here to talk about that, and I was so surprised the way people were. Normally I love asking questions to people in the street just to interact, and they were so nice. Even though they spoke English, they love the fact you really want to learn German and all, whereas in Berlin, even people from Berlin say “are you learning German? Why? You don’t need it”. The difference is huge. I really wish I could get to practice it more 😔.
I will put another point out to the both of you - and in German on purpose: Manchmal trifft man Deutsche, die froh sind, sich einen internationalen Touch (ok, not really a German word) geben zu können, indem sie beweisen wollen, dass sie englisch sprechen können.

In Berlin, yes, you find super cheap fresh veggies and fruits, thanks to the Turkish traders. Otherwise in Lidl for example, these items are on the expensive side, far more than in Cyprus where I live.
Really?! I found it a bit more pricey in Cyprus than the average prices at Lidl or even Edeka! I also often go to the Turkish grocers though! Fresher produce 🤤

@@lifeingermany_ wow I'm so happy for you that you found your happiness here. Unfortunately atm the law says you need to give up your current citizenship to get the German one. But hopefully they'll change it soon. Even for German citizens it's not that easy to get the second citizenship approved.
I totally get why you prefer permanent residency over citizenship. I’m German expat living in Eastern Canada for the past 21 years and have not given up my German citizenship, even though I feel very much at home here.
