Thanks for the great points about auditioning. Yes, you are correct that most all initial auditions (and many callbacks for that matter) are self tapes now. I'm in musical theatre and this is a major shift for us after 2020 and I don't see it changing honestly.

I agree. I do think most theatre casting directors want to have in person auditions. But it’s probably a lot easier for them to at least have the initial audition be self tapes and then they can bring in their picks for callbacks.

Fascinating! Thank you for posting this. I have never auditioned for anything so I have no idea how actors are chosen or not chosen. I've assumed auditions are mostly façade viz. they already know whom they are going to hire. Hopefully assumption ain't so.

That can certainly be the case in some situations. But most of the time if they hold an audition it's because they haven't yet cast the role and are at least open to seeing what's out there.

What about cold read? How do you prepare for a cold read? I am auditioning for Our Town Saturday and it is a cold reading

It’s sometimes hard to prepare for cold reads but if you can get a copy of our town in advance that’s the best way to prepare. At least read a synopsis on line so you understand the plot and characters. When you get your sides they should give you a few minutes to read them over. It’s ok to ask for that. Then come up with a few choices about the character you’re reading for and what they want in the scene. Try and be comfortable with the words so you don’t have to stare at the page the whole time. It’s ok to paraphrase the words or drop a word etc as long as you try to stay in character when you are reading. Don’t get hung up if you mess up saying something. Invest yourself into the scene like you are performing. Speak clearly and mostly just make a strong choice. It may not be the right choice but they want to see you do something with it. If you can read the lines with another actor before you audition that will help get out some of the kinks. And remember cold reads put everyone on the same level. You all are working with the same material and have the same amount of time to prepare so they are really looking for who is the most comfortable and most appropriate for the role. But it’s a known play. See if you can at least read it before you go so you know what to expect.

@@AugmentedActor I even have a list of age ranges for the different characters. I am going to have a friend from a social program that I go to help me with slowing down on the reading. The last audition I read and went to fast. Let me say that pretty much did me in.

That’s a good practice especially for a show like our town which has a very gentle pace and intention to it.
