What you say is true. I dressed my daughter for her class trip to France. She needed to pack light, so she needed a few well coordinated pieces. She was a total opposite from her classmates, no makeup, black clothing, uncomplicated hair and ballet shoes. She also rocks a fedora. She was mistaken for a French woman many times.

I was in Germany this past October and really struggled with the language barrier (I’m American). I got to the point where I was afraid to speak because I didn’t want to be a target. I tried to learn some German before I went but I didn’t learn enough to be functional. My advice would be to focus on directional terms, numbers, food names (especially if you’re vegetarian or have other dietary restrictions), and words that are very common in everyday language. I learned words like entrance, exit, street, stairs, escalator, elevator, etc. all in my first day because I had to get where I needed to go. I would have been much more relaxed if I had learned more before my trip.

I agree Years ago my sister in law wanted to renew her wedding vows in Rome. I had traveled to Italy several b times before this, and was well aware of the cultural expectations. Plus I took 4 years of Italian in high school I advised her to make sure to be appropriately covered up, specifically her arm and chest We’ll, she wore a sleeveless v neck, cleavage showing dress to the church bi could tell from the priest’s face that he was none too pleased. I tried to tell her to save the cleavage for my brother in law, but she didn’t listen. Dince there were others in tge church I think the priest kinda gave them the hurry up abbreviated version of a vow renewal. She felt usher, snd slighted, snd tbh she was because she wasn’t dressed properly I wore a bling sleeved wrap dress with a hemline below my knees. She actually told me I looked silly dressed like that, because it was warm outside

Excellent travel advice, not only for Paris, but anywhere in Europe! I try to dress to blend in and not stand out, and totally agree that it shows respect for another culture to know some polite phrases and words! The best compliment I can get while travelling is if someone asks me for directions! Success, mistaken for a local! It’s inevitable. We’re country cousins! My ancestry is mostly Scottish, Irish, Welsh, English, Finnish (that was a family DNA surprise), French (by way of Scotland), German, Russian (by way of the U.K) and Native American. I’ve always wanted to visit the counties my ancestors came from (along with others) but have not done it yet. One thing that I do know is 🇺🇸 🇬🇧 + all of🇮🇪 tend to adopt a good amount of each other’s trends. I’ll never forget traveling with a group of Americans, me too, and one woman complained about the food everywhere we went even telling the waiters “We don’t cook it like that in the US.” After about three days of this I pulled her aside and told her that if she wanted the food like at home then go home. Thankyou for this! I lived in the US back in 2002 as a student and I was literally in a state of shock when I saw kids wearing pyjamas to school! I could not believe my eyes.. still can not comprehend that. Then when in church people in their sweats and me in my 'Sunday best' 😁😁😁 What is that???
@pollysshore2539
@pollysshore2539 2 года назад
This would depend on where you stayed in 2002. I graduated high school in the early 90s and never saw students in pajamas. In the 2010s I started seeing Uni and then high school students in pajamas everywhere. I wore a lot of wild stuff to school, and I love what I call “pajama clothes”. They are not pajamas, and do not do look like pajamas at all (think a good quality linen outfit), but are comfortable enough to feel like them. That said… my mother would have killed me if I tried to leave the house in actual pajamas. I haven’t been to church in decades, but I would have been in trouble if I tried to wear sweat pants. Almost everyone wore their best. Even farmers with little money who only had a few pieces of clothes. They had their work overalls and their Sunday/go to meeting overalls. This was typically the only thing you saw outside of the Sunday best category. I work 12 hour swing shifts at 911 and have definitely fallen into a rut with athletic wear on nights and weekends when working here and there over the last 20 years. I still love to dress up, though. I miss the days before the mundane polo shirt dress code on my weekday shifts. I used to wear dresses, skirts, etc. Some kept literally rolling out of the bed and into the office on the weekdays. They implemented a casual weekday dress code to combat it.

When I went to Paris and I’ve only been there twice. I’ve been in France only three times. I wore a lot of black and gray with some sort of blazer. Even if it was black jeans. A pair of well fitting jeans and a turtle neck with a blazer can take you far, pair that with a nice crossbody bag and ballet flats and you are ready to site see, or stop for a bite to eat. Black bottoms seems to really be most versatile. I think I took a pair of black ponte knit leggings, a pair of black jeans, a pair of black slacks, and pair of black ponte knit straight leg pants. those and different tops and scarfs a nice blazer or overcoat if it’s cold and it served me well. Love these types of videos Frédérique.

All useful points! My husband is European and prepared me for our first trip a few years ago. Definitely I miss Paris and South France and what I found was that : speaking some words in French (my high school French helped here) definitely opens people up to feel empathy with you and I got help on more than one occasion for my pronunciation (with a smile😊). Saying Bonjour each time you enter a shop is so helpful to have a helpful shop assistant (and I miss hearing them saying Bonjour Madam back at me). Wearing a cross body stylish bag goes a long way. I would let anyone who wanted to speak French to me, do so, even if I didn’t know most of what was said. Please don’t talk loudly is so true, esp in restaurants (and please don’t get drunk in public places!) be polite, learn about the culture before you go, learn some words and show great interest in learning - you’ll find the French to be so happy to help you, and you’ll want to go back like I do. Oh…also. Don’t let your kids run amok. French children are better behaved. 😊

Love your videos. Completely disagree re: language. I took two months of French before going to Paris. Moreover, every time I'd be going somewhere, I'd prepare a few questions (where something is, etc) and every single time people showed me sooooo much disrespect and pretended not to understand. Given that I speak 4 languages, it was very unpleasant. People appeared to be way more pleasant when I spoke English. When I came to the States, the first thing that shocked me was how tolerant people are to other people's accents and poor language skills. Night and day, honestly. Same would be true for London and even Dublin.

My husband always carries his wallet in his front pocket & I usually use a crossbody, especially in the summer & when traveling but yes, good advice, not just for Europe but anyplace :) We're getting ready to go to Colorado (visit family), my husband wants to go overseas, I'd LOVE to go to Norway, that's where my family is from, but I'm thinking I may want to go to Italy first... Not sure why, just do. My favorite though is the Caribbean! I CAN'T WAIT to go down there again!!!

Oh my goodness! What a great video. As an American, I can not believe how loud my countrymen (and women) are!. Too loud in public spaces, yelling at one another across the boulevards, shrieking with laughter, it never ends! One piece of advice I would like to add to your wonderful video is; Watch your alcohol intake. I don’t think I have EVER seen a Parisian sloppy at a restaurant or bar. When Americans vacation we tend to forget that we are ambassadors for our country and more often than not, allow over imbibing to become the order of the day.

I know a Japanese lady who got robbed in Paris, here is how. She was taking the metro to the airport with two bags. Metro door opened she stepped in with one bag because it was heavy turned back quickly for the other bag but it was gone. She panicked and screamed pulled her bag out . The few seconds it took to realize what was happening the second bag disappeared. Apparently it was a known trick. Be careful

Was in Paris mid June this year, but apart from the Romanians with their shell /cup game, can't say i've experienced any of these. And not really fooled by the game, cause i speak the language and know the tricks. Had backpack, camera hanging from the neck, went to the metro, in crowds, all along the Seine. True, I do know some French and, being eastern European, I know how to defend my wallet :P, but still, Paris felt a bit different than the last time i was there, many years ago. Lots more immigrants and less care for the etiquette.

My partner and I were in Paris at the beginning of April and the biggest compliment we got was being asked twice for directions by French people. We were wearing smart casual clothes and trench coats both times. Also we learnt some French before we went there and in the two weeks we were in Paris only once did we have one grumpy waiter but he was rushed off his feet so it was understandable. We used the metro regularly and just like every big citykeep an eye on your bag.

Whenever I am in France people ask me for directions! Especially Germans and other Northern Europeans and Asians of all types. Unfortunately unlike you I am a complete slob, but I guess a French-looking slob =). It gets to the point that when I see Japanese people or Germans making any sort of eye contact I run away! The punchline is that I have the worst sense of direction ever - I can get lost in my home city.

All so true! I always have reverse culture shock when coming back to visit friends & family in America after living in London for 15 years now. Although I know I didn't know how to fit in when I first arrived...so, good advice here! It's so common to have your iPhone stolen when you're on the street (thieves on motorcycles snatch it as they drive by before you know what has happened), so best not to look at it when outside in crowds.

My Francophile friends who have traveled to France tell me even when they try to speak French the response is in English. When ever I have traveled to France, including Paris, I always speak as much French as I know or can and I am well received. I usually say very politely that I am learning French and would like to practice my french and all but one time others were happy to speak with me in French. I adore learning in France. I am going to Paris to stay with a friend for a few weeks this month. Scared and excited, she speaks NO English. Wish me luck. 😊

Oh Frédérique😃 You made me laugh a lot 🤣 I am Northern European who lives in Australia.. 2 years I spent with Italian in Barcelona and Rome and learnt from him how to detect tourists from all over the world. It was funny but also useful. Italians are extremely fashionable but a bit too flashy for me. 😃 I prefer French way.. When I lived in Rome and my daughter attended Italian school near Vatican, we used to go after her lessons to Cafés for snack (Italian school lunches are just amazing). So I spoke Italian (not very good but ok) and in one café poor waiter 🤣 tried very hard to speak with me in French. I didn't understand French back then 😅 I told him that I am not French (even though I look like). So I spoke Italian he speaks back in French and my daughter laughs. About tips and tricks you are absolutely right. Last time I was in Paris while having long waiting hours to go back to Australia via Singapore. I went to city centre to enjoy. Again fun fun 😄 I was wearing silk dress, ballerinas and linen summer coat - all in beige/camel tones.. So tourists stopped me and in basic French asked for directions.. I felt very bad that my French is so extremely limited 🤣 Only real French man understood that I am not French and we had small chat in English and coffee and goodbye kiss 😘 Love Paris 💖 In 6 hours I got everything, including Opera Garnier visit

5:00 Omg that totally happened to me when I visited Paris! Got pretty much all my money stolen while I was distracted by a kid and a very well spoken woman asking for donations for charity, they looked quite legit in their approach and demeanor. I wasn't too touristy in my looks but i was like, alone and literally taking pictures of everything and asking people for directions so i was just naive and the perfect target. Finding the police station was super difficult and took most of my day wandering the streets alone with no money other than my train card, but even to this day I still wish I could return to enjoy the moments i was robbed with that money. Maybe one day :)

I realize that Americans seem to be more casual than our European friends, especially when it comes to athletic wear and logos, so we must stick out like the proverbial "sore thumbs" to scammers and pickpockets. Thanks for another great video Frederique. My husband and I are leaving on Wednesday for a month on the Italian/French Riviera and a month in the UK so I would have loved your video on what to take to Europe. We are going with carryon luggage only, which as you know is only 7kg from Australia- which is like nothing. Anyway, I am taking navy linen pants, white linen pants, black leggings (for exercise, not to wear in public!), 5 or 6 tops, a light denim jacket, 1 dress, a tankini, a hat, 1 pair of sandals and not much else. I’m already at my limit and haven’t ruled out wearing all my clothes onto the plane. I think going through security dressed as the Michelin Man definitely screams “tourist”!

I'm into photography and one of the things that always makes me wonder about these kind of tips is how do local photographers carry their cameras :). I love Paris and have been several times. Having a crossbody bag in front of you is key, i always wore it like that and i used subway and walked lots. There was only once that people did try to scam me asking to sign a petition. they literally shove that in your hands but my bag was crossbody in front of me and i refused firmly, plus a couple of very helpful gendarmes came to my aid. I am not an American and my style is quite European so usually i manage to blend in, but being vigilant is very important to enjoy your stay. Thanks for the video.

At a Paris train station a young boy tried to sell me a magazine, I told him 2x I didn't want it and he persisted. Finally I told him in a very angry manner if he didn't leave me along I was going to scream and call the police. He understood anger and police and left. These incidents did not bother me and my visit to Paris was lovely.
