Upgrade is a fantastic film and will always be a hidden gem, brilliant twists, visceral action and a surprising nuanced central performance from Logan Marshall Green make for an incredibly intense experience
Maybe this is too old, but "Europa Report" from 2013 was a realistic look at an exploratory trip to Europa to investigate possible signs of life. It's one of the few sci-fi films to acknowledge the need for effective radiation shielding in deep space.
Is the release for home viewing different to the theatrical release of Europa Report at the cinema? I went in all hyped yesterday and found it not as realistic as it was made out to be. Was left disappointed. The actors did a great job though the story was just awful.
"In The Shadow of the Moon" "Code 8" "Spectral" "Prospect" "Oxygen" "Advantageous" "Level 16" (I've seen this mounting Terror movie.) "Freaks" "What Happened to Monday?" "I Am Mother"
I stumbled upon "Spectral" shortly after I subscribed to Netflix and was pleasantly surprised by the movie. Often the 'lesser' B-production movies can do and try out new things story-wise. Good to know there's still more to find.
It makes me sad, because the Sci Fi Channel (before they became SyFy) used to be great for interesting, well-done B movies. Those movies usually had a solid plot, solid acting, and occasionally iffy special effects, but were generally quite good. Good examples are the Stargate movies, especially.
@@Gamble661 That was the heyday of the Sci Fi Channel. They had Farscape, Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, Battlestar Galactica, Eureka (another wildly underrated series), and Tremors (the series) all going during that golden age of the 00s. They also picked up the Babylon 5 license but only made a single pilot from it, I think (Legend of the Rangers), which was, sadly, pretty terrible and never went anywhere.
Prospect and Code 8 are both hidden gems . Both are pure character driven science fiction without massive amounts of cgi. I would recommend both to everyone who loves science fiction movies .
I went into Prospect with zero expectations and was pleasantly surprised by it, and then one rewatch turned into another and another and now I own the damn thing on dvd *and* blu-ray. At its core it's a gold rush space western with just enough world building to make you deeply curious, but the characters are what make it worth returning to. Ezra is far and away my favorite character Pascal has played in anything, and that's including his other space cowboy and fellow accidental dad Din Djarin. Anybody that's looking forward to his turn as Joel in TLOU should definitely give Prospect a watch.
I just watched it 10 times and ordered it on blue ray aswell, I am surprised this did not do well in theaters. It cameout before covid and seems like the perfect movie to sit down and be amazed by the world building.
I watched it for Sophie Thatcher as I like her in Yellowjackets and think she’s a great actress who deserves to be in so many projects, she and Pedro Pascal had great chemistry and I hope we see them together again in another project.
A lot of times Netflix recommendations are pretty bad. But I got recommended a few of these and they were great. I heard about Code 8 after I saw the short film that it was based on. It shows that you don't need a monster budget to make a good scifi film.
Prospect is actually one of my top favorite movies. I usually like movies that just step on the gas and don't let up, or have some kind of deep mystery to uncover, and it's weird because Prospect isn't either one of those. It really is much more of a slow burn, there's no super huge stakes like the fate of the universe hangs in the balance... nothing like that... it's more like an older survival movie, something like Robinson Crusoe, or Castaway or something like that, and I love it.
I am Mother was amazing, deep and thought provoking. It keeps making you wonder. Spectral was just Brilliant and one of my Fav Streaming Movies to date. Loved the idea and setting.... which is a little eerie considering world events. Prospect is so simple, but its played out so well... not to mention the DETAIL. for such a small budget they made an amazingly simple and beautiful SciFi
What Happened to Monday is such an interesting film, brilliantly acted by Noomi Rapace of Girl with the Dragon Tattoo fame. fast-paced, exciting, good twists and turns, surprisingly original . In the Shadow of the Moon is okay, fun, but ultimately forgettable. I Am Mother was almost great, but also forgettable in the end.
I think another one that needs to be added to this list is Black Crab. I think Noomi Rapace is a great actress and plays some tough, but relatable characters. She also has great range, When I watch her in a movie, even though I know it's Noomi, she can make you believe and follow that character. I know she has some great roles, but I am still waiting and hoping she gets something large where she can start and basically own a franchise. Ex, Sigouney Weaver/Aliens, Linda Hamilton/Terminator, Hugh Jackman/Wolverine. You know, where an actor/actress plays a role so well, they basically own it and no one else can play it.
Love videos like these because they lead me to films I probably never would've seen otherwise. Thanks so much and please make lesser-known movies and tv gems, sci-fi and otherwise, a normal part of your repertoire. Also, please break your videos up into chapters though so we can jump from film to film (or topic to topic) without having to scan through the videos to look for them manually.
Spectral seems like a live action film in with the same concept as Final Fantasy The spirit within. At least with the ghosts that can't be seen and kill on touch. Definitely going to check it out. Probably going to check out most films on this list that I have not already seen.
These are some awesome suggestions! I've already seen several of the films in this list and loved them, I can't wait to watch some more :) Indy Sci-Fi is a great sub genre that I wish got more attention. With it's limited budget the focus is more on great characters and concepts.
Code 8 Fun facts: I was an Extra along with 150+ other Arrowverse fans. I’m on screen for a less than 3 seconds but hey, I’m on screen! Steve and Robbie are actually cousins (not siblings) They’ve finished filming the sequel and it’s currently in post production Code 8 raised over $2M US via an Indigogo crowdfunding campaign, they smashed their initial goal of $200k in under 24 hours.
I went in expecting Spectral to be super cheesy, but it was actually enjoyable. it's hard to find a good movie that blends war with sci-fi or supernatural, another one I really liked was the Ghosts of War, thought it was a WW2 horror movie, till the end pulled the rug out from under me.
Anybody intentionally watching a Pedro Pascal movie on purpose needs to have their head checked. After his vitriol and hate online, most are boycotting
I’m happy to say I have watched a few of these. There’s quite of few hidden gems out there. Sometimes they turn out to be paste not ‘gems’. 😅😋 But, now and again, you get a diamond in the rough! Especially when actors such as Pedro Pascal happen to be part of it!
10. In The Shadow of the Moon 9. Code 8 8. Spectral 6 7. Prospect 6. Oxygen 5. Advantageous 4. Level 16 3. Freaks 2. What Happened to Monday 1. I am Mother
These all look amazing. I feel like Sci-fi needs to focus on smaller stories but with bigger implication on the world around a few characters, and these all seem to hit that mark.
I am Mother was enjoyable. My first novel was about a robot mother, but was more utopian, and was from the first to populate a star. Prospect was excellent. Loved the mood and the strange-but-familiar nature of it all.
You can always try watching older films, if you haven't already seen all of those as well. My problem, I find it, is that I only know old films and nothing about the newer ones.
Threw on Spectral when I was bored a few years back. No idea what it was, wasn’t expecting much. By the end I couldn’t believe I hadn’t heard more about the movie.
Glad to say I've seen I Am Mother, and I loved it, recommend it to my friends all the time when movies come up and they always give me a "What?" expression after hearing the name
I've seen most of these when they came out. I tend to look for Indie type sci-fi movies and foreign sci-fi movies which can be 1 million times better than anything produced in the States.
@@Lethalport1515 if you haven't already, I recommend watching Robbie's new show Upload and Stephen's new show Heels. Both shows are amazing and well acted.
the only thing on Amazon Prime (Australia) called "In the shadow of the moon" is a doco about the Apollo program. But yes the movie subject of this video, is on Netflix (Australia).
If I missed this I apologize. I wanted to see if you had a hidden gems video about movies in 2020, I couldn't find a video that this moviecould fit into. First it's a slow burn drama, not my favorite genre, but became instantly hooked. The movie is called I'm Your Woman, and I was so blown away by it. I just think it should be mentioned in one of your videos, so people know about it's existence.
I Am Mother is one big trolley problem. The AI had to 'throw the switch' so to speak to save more in the long run. The AI always wanted to help humanity. It just had to kill the world first.
I've seen your top 4. "Level 16' "What happened to monday" "I am mother" and "freaks" I enjoyed all of them. I see I'm going to have a busy weekend now watching the other 6.
Nothing except perhaps the crushing inflation & its related hardships that will (if it hasn't already), make paying for multiple streaming services a genuine luxury & not so much a simple option.
In The Shadow of the Moon, really enjoyed. Code 8, really enjoyed. Spectral, meh. Yes, original, but won't be watching a second time for decades. Prospect, really enjoyed. Super predictable but fun sci-fi. Oxygen, didn't remember it, but watched it a while back, forgettable. Advantageous, sick premise, didn't feel like the characters or their conflicts were relatable or realistic. Level 16, didn't see it. Freaks, didn't see but intrigued. What Happened to Monday, interesting movie. I Am Mother, enjoyable though predictable. All my opinions, the opinions of some old guy scifi buff whose favorite movie is probably Close Encounters... Good list of films.
